10th and 14th paragraphs are revised to replace the word “ASME Code Symbol”
ith “C tifi ti M k”with “Certification Mark”.The text of the Foreword is the same for all
the Sections of ASME BPVC
1Changes in Addenda
2011 of Section IX
Revised to replace the word “ASME Code pSymbol” with “Certification Mark”.
The text of the Statement of Policy is the same for all the Sections of ASME BPVC
2Changes in Addenda
2011 of Section IX
Formerly Mandatory Appendix A has been d t th f t tt i ht ft moved to the front matter right after
Foreword and Statement of Policy. Appendix A shall remain anonymous
unless it is named in some next Edition of unless it is named in some next Edition of the Code with some mandatory
information. This change has been made in all Sections of ASME BPVC all Sections of ASME BPVC.
3Changes in Addenda
2011 of Section IX
l 6 h f l lFormerly QW-161.1 permits the use of multiple specimens when the thickness exceeds 38 mm
with a modification of specimen width between 19 to 38 mm in lieu of 10 mm as per QW-462.2. p Q
The multiple specimens were taken in thickness direction of the coupon. It was being assumed
that Manufacturer or Contractor shall take care that entire weld and HAZ are within the bent that entire weld and HAZ are within the bent
portion but it was not very well clear in the Code. To make it clear, second paragraph of
QW-161.1 has been revised. Now there are two situations due to which multiple specimens situations due to which multiple specimens
may be required, firstly specimen thickness and secondly width of the weld.
4Changes in Addenda
2011 of Section IX
Coupon thickness = 75 mmBending machine capacity =25 mm
Weld joint type = Full penetration groove weldGroove angle = 90 degree, incl.g g
Weld width = 150 mmHAZ = 50 mm on each side
Weld width + HAZ = 250 mmNote: Weld portion and HAZ shall be covered in
three separate specimens. To cover the full thickness, three specimens each
25 mm thick shall be required. As per Table 451.1, four bend tests are required to qualify the
procedure. So total specimens required are (3+3)*4 = 24 No’s = 24 No s
5Changes in Addenda
2011 of Section IX
New paragraph QW-185 has been added to p g p Qaddress Fusion Welding that is a solid state
welding in which fusion of the atoms between the multiple layers of sheet or plate takes place below the melting temperatures of
either base metal. Use of mechanical pressure is also made during the process, however
l d ll l d hsolid filler metal may be inserted between the faying surfaces.
Definition of fusion welding is also added in QW-492.
6Changes in Addenda
2011 of Section IX
Welding variables related to fusion welding g gare added in Article II, III and IV. Variables
are added to address both procedure and performance qualification.
QW-251.1, QW-266, QW-386, QW-403.28, QW-403.29, QW-404.53, QW-407.10, QW-
408.25, QW-410.70, QW-410.71, QW-410.72 are added and/or revised because of addition
fusion welding
7Changes in Addenda
2011 of Section IX
Some variables are deleted and some are Some variables are deleted and some are added. So to address these variables, the same
has been added and/or revised in Article IV.
8Changes in Addenda
2011 of Section IX
QW-300.3 has been revised to permit the use of Standard Welding Procedure Specification
(SWPS’s) when simultaneous performance qualification is made provided participating
organizations are agreed upon and it supports all the essential variables required
for the performance qualification. The SWPS’s should have been adopted in accordance with
Article V.
9Changes in Addenda
2011 of Section IX
QW-409.26 is an essential variable for GTAW, ESW, FCAW, GMAW and SAW when used in hard-facing or corrosion-resistant overlay. It says more than 10% heat
input or more than 10% volume of the weld metal deposited per unit length of the weld is an essential
variable, it applies to first layer only. Up to 2010, the l t t f QW 409 26 d t th t thi last sentence of QW-409.26 used to say that this
increase may be measured by the method of QW-409.1 but it cannot be “measured” rather it can be
“determined”, so the word “measured” has been replaced with “determined” that is more appropriatereplaced with determined that is more appropriate.
QW-409.29 that is an essential variable for temper bead welding, same revision is made as noted above.

Changes in Addenda 2011 of Section IX
Reshuffling is made between different paragraphs if compared with 2010 edition.
2010 Edition says unlisted base metals having the same UNS designation as that of a listed base metal in QW-422 “shall be considered as
assigned to” that P-Number or P-Number plus G b h bl l dGroup Number. The blue, italic and
underlined phrase has been replaced with “is also considered”

Changes in Addenda 2011 of Section IX
N h 7 dd b t th New paragraph no. 7 addresses about the material grouping of two base metals
produced under same specification of ASTM and ASME This 7th para Used to be 2nd para and ASME. This 7th para. Used to be 2nd para.
Of QW-420.2 in Edition 2004.

Changes in Addenda 2011 of Section IX
New paragraph no. 8 addresses the intent of the column “ISO/TR 15608 grouping” in QWthe column ISO/TR 15608 grouping in QW-
422. The purpose of this grouping is to make the convenient use of Section IX worldwide.
Section IX does not make any reference Section IX does not make any reference throughout the text for both procedure and
performance qualification.
13
Changes in Addenda 2011 of Section IX
Some base metals added (F92), some corrections are made (SA 299 K02803 group corrections are made (SA 299 K02803, group
no. corrected), some shuffling (S43035 moved to after S43000), UNS designation revision
(A356 12A), some other correction like (A356 12A), some other correction like product form of P355GH is corrected by
errata.

Changes in Addenda 2011 of Section IX
Lines added in QW-432 for following Nickel and Nickel alloy bare electrodes and wires for and Nickel-alloy bare electrodes and wires for F-No-43;
•ERNiCr 7 •ERNiCr-7, •ERNiCrFe-13 •ERNiCrMo-22
15
Changes in Addenda 2011 of Section IX
Previous QW-462.10 and QW-462.11 are renumbered to QW-462.10(a) and QW-462.10(b) with no other revision Q ( ) Q ( )because these tables still meet the requirement of latest AWS standard AWS D17.2. QW-462.10(a) added, however.
16
Changes in Addenda 2011 of Section IX
QW-466.1……..Test Jig Dimensions for guided bended tests are given in both US Customary and SI units, but g y ,these were not exact equivalent, now metric conversions are corrected. For previous 52.4 mm dimension is now corrected to 50 mm, for example.

Changes in Addenda 2011 of Section IX
2010 Edition:Welding with equipment that has controls that are manuallyWelding with equipment that has controls that are manuallyadjusted by the welding operator or adjusted under the welding operator’s direction in response to visual observation of the welding, with the torch, gun, or electrode holder held by a mechanical device.
2011 Addenda:Welding with equipment that has controls that can be adjusted by the welding operator, or adjusted under the welding operator’s direction, in response to changes in the welding conditions. The torch, gun, or electrode holder is held by a g ymechanical device.

Changes in Addenda 2011 of Section IX
If construction Code permits the use of SWPS’s, then it may be adopted if all requirements of QW-510 and elsewhere mentioned in Section IX are metelsewhere mentioned in Section IX are met.SWPS’s cannot be used unless a welder is not qualified using that procedure in accordance with QW-510 except when exempted by QW-520.P i l QW 510 id i lif h Previously, QW-510 provides two options to qualify the welder, either by mechanical testing or by radiography. Now, 2011 addenda provides two options either by mechanical testing or by volumetric NDE (that covers g y (both RT and UT).
19
Changes in Addenda 2011 of Section IX
d d dd d dd dA new mandatory appendix J is added in 2011 addenda. It guides the Code users how to request Section IX committee for assigning P-Number to an unlisted base metal in QW-422.M t i l h ll b ith f S ti II f Material shall be either from Section II or from some other national (like IS standards) or international recognized standard (like ASTM, EN, DIN, AS, JIS standards).Request shall include material application or its use Request shall include material application or its use, product specification, grade, type, mechanical and chemical properties, welding or brazing data, properties of welded or brazed base metal joints.
20
Changes in Addenda 2011 of Section IX
If committee assigns P Number to the requested base If committee assigns P-Number to the requested base metal, it does not mean that this material is approved in the Code construction unless construction code permits its use.For the new materials, it is no use of requesting Section IX committee for the assignment of P-Number, rather than this relevant committee of Section II Part D is a right address. First they approve the material for Code right address. First they approve the material for Code construction, then Section IX committee also adopts it.
