INTRODUCTION

TheOhioJuniorScienceandHumanitiesSymposium(hereafterreferredtoasOJSHS)isan

annualeventinwhichOhiostudentsingrades7to12“competeforscholarshipsand

recognitionbypresentingtheresultsoftheiroriginalresearcheffortsbeforeapanelof

judgesandanaudienceoftheirpeers”1.TheOJSHSispartofthenationalJuniorScienceand

HumanitiesSymposiaProgram,whichisjointlysponsoredbytheUnitedStates

DepartmentsoftheArmy,Navy,andAirForce,incooperationwithleadingresearch

universitiesthroughoutthenation.The2011OJSHStookplaceonMarch23–25at

BowlingGreenStateUniversity,whohostedandsponsoredtheeventalongwiththeNWO

CenterforExcellenceinSTEMEducation.Thepurposeofthisreportistopresentthe

findingsofthe2011OJSHSevaluation.Thereportwillbeginadescriptionofevaluation

methods,followedbyadescriptionofthe2011OJSHSparticipants.Thereportwillthen

summarizetheperceptionsofthe2011OJSHSparticipantsbeforeconcludingwith

recommendationsforfutureOhioJuniorScienceandHumanitiesSymposia.

EVALUATION METHODS

The2011OJSHSwasevaluatedusinganonlinesurveythatwasmadeavailabletothe

participantsattheendofthelastdayoftheevent.Thelinktothesurveywasincludedin

theparticipants’registrationpacket.Thelinkwasalsoe‐mailedtotheparticipantsone

weekaftertheendoftheevent.

Theevaluationsurveyincludedseveralitemsthataskedparticipantstoratethe

qualityofseveralaspectsofthe2011OJSHS,includingthekeynotepresentation,theposter

andpaperjudges,theorganizationofposterpresentationspace,andtheawardsceremony.

ThesurveyalsoaskedparticipatingstudentstoratehoweffectivetheOJSHSwasat

increasingtheirinterestinSTEMresearchandcareers.Thesurveyincludedseveralclosed‐

endedmultiple‐choiceitems(nineforstudentsandfourfornon‐students)andseveral

open‐endeditems(threeforstudentsandfourfornon‐students)thataskedparticipantsto

2011 OJSHS PARTICIPANTS

Atotalof120studentsand81non‐studentsparticipatedinthe2011OJSHS.Studentscould

participateinthe2011OJSHSaspaperpresenters,posterpresenters,ordelegates(whodid

notpresentanyresearch).Non‐studentsincludedteachers,parents,paperandposter

judges,OJSHSstaff/volunteers(e.g.,sessionpresiders),andotherguests.Theattendance

numbersaredisplayedinthetablebelow.

Likethestudentparticipants,mostofthenon‐students(38.5%)wereparticipating

intheOJSHSforthefirsttimein2011.Themajorityofthese“first‐timers”wereparents

andposterjudges.Almostaquarter(23.1%)ofthenon‐studentsreportedparticipatingin

theOJSHSforthesixth(ormore)timein2011;mostofthesenon‐studentswereteachers

andpaperjudges.Theremainingnon‐studentsreportedparticipatingintheOJSHSforthe

second(7.7%),third(11.5%),fourth(7.7%),andfifth(11.5%)timein2011.

dayduration.However,manyoftheparticipatingstudentsonlyattendedthelastdayofthe

Studentswereaskedtowritecommentstoexplaintheirresponsestotheabove

questions.Themajorityofthestudents’commentswerepositive,indicatingthatthe

studentshadapositiveexperienceatthe2011OJSHS.Thetableandfiguresabove

indicatethatstudentsratedthe“paperandposterjudges”andthe“organizationofthe

posterpresentationspace”lowerthananyotheraspectofthe2011OJSHS.Accordingly,

manyofthestudents’responsesaddressedthejudgesandtheposterspace.Threestudents

mentionedthatalargervarietyofjudges(intermsofexpertise)wouldhaveimprovedthe

paperandposterjudging.Severalstudentsnotedthatthespaceforposterpresentations

wastoosmall,andafewstudentsfurthercommentedthatsomestudentshadmorespace

thanothers.

Inadditiontoratingthequalityofthe2011OJSHS,studentswerealsoaskedtorate

theimpactofthe2011OJSHSontheirinterestinSTEM(science,technology,engineering,

andmathematics)researchcareers.Thetableandfigurebelowcontainthestudents’mean

Thestudentswereaskedtodescribetheirexperienceatthe2011OJSHSintheir

ownwords.Oneofthemainthemesthatemergedfromthestudents’responseswasthe

opportunityforstudent­studentinteraction.Manystudentswroteaboutmeetingnew

peopleatthe2011OJSHS.Someofthestudentswrote:

Ilikedtheopportunitytomeetotherstudentsandlistentotheresearchthattheywereconducting.

Ilikedbeingabletomeetnewpeopleandmakesomefriends.

IlovedgettingtoknowpeoplewhohavesimilarinterestsinSTEMeducation.

Ilikedmeetingandtalkingtopeoplemyownageaboutourprojectsandinterests.

Anothermajortheme,relatedtothefirst,regardingstudents’experiencesatthe

2011OJSHSwaslearningfromothers.Manystudentsmentionedthattheyenjoyed

lookingatandtalkingaboutotherstudents’projects.Studentsreportedlearningmore

aboutscienceandbecomingmoreinterestedinscienceasaresultofinteractingwithother

studentsatthe2011OJSHS.Somestudentswrote:

Itwasgreattoseesuchahighqualityofprojectsandknowwhatotherswerecapableofdoingworkatsuchahighlevel.Itreallyinspiredme.

Ireallyenjoyedseeingotherpeople’sprojectsandresearch.TherearemanyfieldsthatIfoundveryinterestingandneverwouldhavethoughttoexplore.

IlovedthatIwasbeingexposedtootherpeoplethatdidresearchinlevelshigherthanmebecauseithelpedmecreateideasofprojectsthatIcoulddo.

Myexperienceatthe2011OJSHShasmademeevenmoreinterestedinscience,anditwasveryinspiringwatchingthepaperpresentersandhasmademestartthinkingofabigger,moreadvancedprojectfornextyear.

Mostofthestudentswhocommentedaboutthenon‐presentationactivities(i.e.,ice

skating,curling,labtours)mentionedthattheyenjoyedthem,althoughtherewereafew

studentswhosuggestedthatthelabtoursbemadeoptional.Onethemethatemerged

regardingfromstudents’responsesaboutthenon­presentationactivitieswasadesire

formorefreetime.Althoughmoststudentsmentionedthattheyenjoyedtheactivities,

manyindicatedthattheywouldhavelikedmorefreetimetodowhattheywanted.Some

studentswrote:

Iwouldmaybeliketobebackatthehotelalittleearliertohavetimespentrelaxing,buttheactivitieswereenjoyable.

Ididnotlikethelackoffreedomgivenduringthedaystowhatwewant.

Ididnotlikethefactthatwedidnothavealotofdowntimetointeractwith[otherstudents].

Finally,83%ofstudentswhoareeligibletoreturnnextyear(i.e.,not12thgraders)

reportedthatisveryormoderatelylikelythattheywillbeinvolvedwiththeOJSHSnext

year.

Non‐studentparticipantswereaskedtowritecommentstoexplaintheirresponses

totheabovequestions.Thetableandfiguresaboveindicatethatnon­studentsrated

the“onlineregistration”andthe“organizationoftheposterpresentationspace”lower

thananyotheraspectofthe2011OJSHS.Thecommentsexplainedthatthe“posterswere

abitmorecrowdedthisyearthaninthepast”andthatthere“needstobebetterdefined

posterspaceforeachparticipant”.Theonlycommentabouttheonlineregistrationwas

that“teachersneedalittlemoreinformationtoensurethatthestudentsareregistered”.

Inadditiontoratingthequalityofthe2011OJSHS,thenon‐studentparticipants

werealsoaskedtodescribetheimpactofthe2011OJSHSonstudents’interestinand

understandingofSTEM.Althoughitislikelythatmostoftheparticipatingstudents

werealreadyinterestedinSTEM,manynon­studentparticipantssuggestedthatthe

OJSHSprovidedstudentswithmotivationtocontinuelearningandconducting

researchaboutSTEM.Someoftheparticipantswrote:

Theexperienceseemstogreatlymotivatethestudentstodomoreinthefield.Theywanttoresearchmoreanddohigherqualityworkafterwatchingthepaperpresentations.

Theyoungerstudentsespeciallywereappreciativeoffeedbackandshowedmarkedinterestinreturningnextyear.

Thiseventpiquesourstudents’interestsandhasmanyinterestedincontinuingresearchandreturningnextyear!

Thenon‐studentparticipantswerealsoaskedtodescribetheirexperienceofthe

2011OJSHSintheirownwords.Theoveralltoneoftheresponseswaspositive–many

participantsreportedthattheyenjoyeddifferentaspectsoftheeventaswellastheeventin

general.Theposterjudgesspecificallystatedthattheyenjoyedtalkingtothestudents.One

posterjudgewrote:

Myexperienceasaposterjudgewasenjoyableandinteresting.Thestudentswereverywell­spoken,preparedandenthusiastic,andspeakingtothemwasthebestpartoftheexperience.

Manyofthenon‐studentparticipantsechoedthecommentsofthestudents,

emphasizingtheroleofOJSHSinfosteringpositivestudent‐studentinteractions.Two

participantswrote:

It’smorethanacompetition.Itallowsthestudentstointeractwithoneanotherandshareideas.Ilovethataspectofit.

Ienjoythefactthatforabout48hoursmykidscanhangouttogetherwithothergreatkidsandbuildrelationshipsaswellaslearnbetterresearchskills.

Finally,87.5%ofthenon‐studentparticipantsreportedthatisverylikelythatthey

willbeinvolvedwiththeOJSHSnextyear.Theremaining12.5%reportedthatitisnotall

likelythattheywillbeinvolvedwithOJSHSnextyear.

SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE OJSHS

Thefindingsfromthe2011OJSHSevaluationsurveyindicatethatthe2011OJSHSwas

perceivedtobeahigh‐qualityandimpactfuleventbystudentandnon‐studentparticipants

alike.Thefindingsdemonstratethatthe2011OJSHSprovidedmanyopportunitiesfor

studentstointeractwithandlearnfromotherstudentsandSTEMprofessionals,and

helpedstimulatemoreinterestinstudentstolearnaboutandconductSTEMresearch.

Thesepositivefindingsnotwithstanding,therearestillwaysinwhichtheOJSHScouldbe

improved.

AnyeventsuchasOJSHSshouldcontinuallyseektoimproveitselfbysoliciting

suggestionsfromitsstakeholders.Inkeepingwiththisphilosophy,all2011OJSHS

participantswereaskedtoprovidesuggestionsforhowtheOJSHScouldbeimprovedinthe

future.Thesuggestionsthatfollowarebasedontheparticipants’reportedsuggestionsas

wellastheparticipants’otherresponsesandcomments.

1 MODIFY THE SYSTEM BY WHICH POSTERS ARE JUDGED

Thisgeneralsuggestionisactuallycomprisedoftwomorespecificsuggestionsaboutthe

posterjudgingsystem.Manyoftheparticipants(bothstudentsandnon‐students)

commentedontheposterjudging,andsuggestedsomewaysthatitcouldbeimproved.

Onesuggestionthatcamemostlyfromparticipatingstudentswastoensurea

greatervarietyamongthejudgesintermsoftheirexpertise.Somestudentsperceivedthat

mostofthejudgescamefromthe“hardscience”fields,andsuggestedthatmorejudgesbe

recruitedfromfieldslikepsychologyandothersocialsciences.

Anothersuggestionthatwasgivenbystudentsandnon‐studentsalikewastohave

twojudgesevaluateeachposter.Thissuggestioncouldbebasedonthefactthejudging

rubriccontainsseverallargescalesthatmightbeuseddifferentlybytwodifferentjudges.

Havingateamofjudgesforeachstudentmighthelptostandardizethescoringprocess.

Someoftheparticipantswrote:

Thejudgingsystemwasperhapsalittletoosubjective–astructurewithmultiplejudgesperposterwouldhelp.

Thesubjectivityoftheposterjudging–eachstudentevaluatedbyonlyonejudge–maynotbefairtoallthestudents.

2 RE-ORGANIZE THE SPACE FOR POSTER PRESENTATIONS

Issuesregardingthespaceforposterpresentationswereamongthemostcommentedon

bythe2011OJSHSparticipants.Bothstudentsandnon‐studentsbelievethatchangesneed

tobemadetoimprovetheposterspace.Thegreatestconcernwasthelackofspacethat

studentshadtopresenttheirposters.Onenon‐studentparticipantsuggestedthata

ballroombeusedinsteadoftheroomthatwasusedthisyear.Someoftheparticipants

wrote:

Theonlythingthatwasslightlynegativewasthatposterswerecrammedveryclosenexttooneanother,sotherewaslittlespacetotalktotheposter’spresenter.

Wishtherewasmorespaceforposterpresenters.

Anotherissueregardingtheposterspacewasthelackofconsistencyintheamount

ofroomthateachstudenthadtosetuptheirposter.Sincetheposterspacewasmadeupof

aseriesoftallpanels,studentswhoarrivedearlycouldpotentiallyusemorespacethan

thosewhoarrivedlate.Onesolutionmightbetoestablishmeasurementstandards(for

howtallandwideapostercanbe)towhichstudentsmustadhere.Notsurprisingly,the

posterpresenterswerethemainsourceforthissuggestion.Someofthestudentswrote:

IenjoyedeverythingIwasinvolvedin,butIjustnoticedthatsomestudentsdidn’thaveasmuchspaceasothersintheposterjudging.

Manystudentsprovidedpositivecommentsregardingthenon‐presentationactivities.

Specifically,thestudentsmentionedthattheyenjoyediceskating,curling,andthecampus

labtours.Somestudents,however,suggestedthatthelabtoursbemadeoptionalorthat

studentsshouldbeallowedtochoosewhichlab(s)theytour.Thiswouldallowstudentsto

havemorefreetimeiftheychoseto,whichwasanothercommonmessageamongthe

students.
