Introduction
This document contains a summary of the results from the 2011 club questionnaire sent out by the
NCJLA. Thirty three (33) clubs of fifty six (56) clubs responded.
About heat maps The results presented in tables and charts with heat mapping applied to most of the tables. Heat
mapping is visual indication systems with color used to show were a value is in the rage from least to
greatest. So for example on a range of PG&E Bills from 100/month to 1,000 per month a pure green
color indicator would be placed on the 100/month value and a pure red color would be placed on the
1,000 per month. Pure yellow would be place on 500/month. The ranges between 100 and 500 would
be green/yellow. The ranges between 500 and 1,000 would be yellow/red. The intent of the heat map,
once you’re used to them, is to be able to quickly identify where in a range a number lands. There are
times where the color polarity will change. In an example where we’re looking at costs (ex. field cost)
like the PG&E example the largest number is red (high cost being bad). In an example of savings or
revenue generation the polarity will switch. Big numbers in a revenue generating world are good so
they will be green and red will be the lower values.
About Club Names Club names are purposefully removed and purposefully randomized throughout the presentation. In
other words, don’t assume that “club 1” referred to in one chart is the same as “club 1” in another chart,
it’s not and again that’s intentional to respect club privacy.

Budget spend categories This chart shows what percentage of the budget is spent by major category. The colors represent the maximum and
minimum amounts in each column. So for example, in the “Coach Comp” column club 7 spends 45% of their budget on
couches which is the most and club 26 spends 2% of theirs which is the least. The bottom row is “heated” horizontally
showing that coaches, on average, is the largest budget item for clubs.

*Interviews of each coach
Note to readers: As of the 2012 season the NCJLA requires clubs to ensure their coaches have completed a PCA course (online or workshop) within the
past 3 years, have US Lacrosse membership that is current through the end of the season, complete the US Lacrosse Level 1 online course, have a clear
background check, and sign a coaches code of conduct.

How can the NCJLA help?
© N C J L A 2 0 1 1 24 | P a g e
• Finding and training coaches
– Resources on NCJLA website & US Lacrosse websites
• Guide to starting and running a lacrosse organization
– NCJLA coordinates and publishes the dates, times and locations of
US Lacrosse CEP and PCA clinics as well as the California Lacrosse
Convention
• Recruit players by holding clinics
– When, where and how to hold them (sticks available from NorCal
Chapter of US Lacrosse); communication options
– Places to find kids
• Schools
• Religious organizations
• Other youth organizations - such as boy and girl scouts and
boys’ and girls’ clubs
– NCJLA needs to compile our best practices and make them available
to help clubs with securing fields, lowering costs and fundraising
and finding volunteers.
