Mosier Community Visions…On May 5, 2011, the City of Mosier held a Visioning Workshop for the Mosier Community that focused on community hopes and dreams for downtown Mosier. The room was decorated with pictures and maps of downtown Mosier glory days and past visioning and planning efforts by the community and local leadership.

For this EPA-funded workshop, 70 community members and stakeholders were invited to draw their ideas for the Union Pacific Property, the Mosier Hub property, and the downtown corridor. All of these drawings were immediately photocopied and shrunk down to playing card size. Then the participants were able to choose their favorites and create their own posters with their neighbors’ drawings and their own.

Jim Waddell returned on November 11, 2011, to present the final artist-rendered drawings based on the community creations.

70 community members attended, including Wasco County Commissioners, Business Oregon staff, ODOT staff, National Scenic Area staff, Mosier City Councilors/Mayor, Mosier Community School representatives, Friends of the Gorge staff.

Sustainable Mosier DowntownLocal and visitor services are the focus on Main Street: fresh produce markets, childcare, light manufacturing, cooperatives, bike rentals and maintenance. Solar arrays and public transportation symbolize self-reliance and resiliency. A large welcome center offers hospitality and service to our visitors.

Farmers MarketMosier’s economy has been based historically on agriculture.

The community is still focused on food production with an emphasis on local markets.

Don’t forget the Quarry!Mosier residents have worked very hard to gain control over their future by stopping the mining activities in an active rock pit within Mosier’s Urban Growth Area. The community is now poised to share a vision of the future potential of this rock quarry with their partner, ODOT.

Sustainable Mosier TransportationMosier residents see the potential for alternative modes of

travel that won’t bring coal and crude oil threats through Downtown Mosier. With the reconnection of the Historic

Columbia River Highway, Mosier’s economy has revitalized with an increase in tourism. Most of Mosier’s visitors arrive by

bike.
