Greetings from the Madison Chamber of Commerce
Madison sits on the north shore of Long Island Sound. In addition to its coastline, the town is defi ned by woodlands and residential neighborhoods. Its small downtown center appeals to many tastes and interests, offering an award-winning bookstore, an art cinema, a tea emporium, coffee shops, cafes and restaurants, and clothing and gift boutiques. The E.C. Scranton Memorial Library and the post offi ce building anchor the three-block downtown area. The large, open Town Green hosts craft fairs, antique shows, and concerts.
Visitors have a choice of bed and breakfast inns within walking distance of downtown and the beaches. Residents support an outstanding school system, an extensive recreation program, many churches, and numerous volunteer efforts. Madison’s combination of small-town charm and urban sophistication create a compelling municipality in which to live or visit.

General DescriptionMadison was fi rst settled in 1641 as part of Guilford. It was
organized as a separate community in 1707 and incorporated in 1826. The town was the 128th town established in Connecticut and encompasses approximately 36.3 square miles within New Haven County, approximately 15 miles east of New Haven and 35 miles south of Hartford. Interstate 95 and state highways 80 and 1 (Boston Post Road) intersect the town for east and west transportation access, while state highway 79 provides north-south access. Madison is bordered on the east by Clinton; on the north by Durham; on the south by Long Island Sound; and on the west by Guilford. The town is primarily a suburban, residential community with single-family homes.
Since the 1860s, the town has maintained a large summer-resident community that is attracted to the town beaches and Long Island Sound. Most year-round residents are in the executive, professional, technical, and managerial fi elds, and are employed in Hartford, New Haven, Fairfi eld County, and New York. The population is approximately 18,600 persons. Bus, air, and rail service are available from New Haven, Hartford, Providence, Rhode Island, and New York. The town has a railroad station on Bradley Road serviced by Shore Line East, a State of Connecticut DOT Commuter Railroad that provides commuter service between New London and New Haven during rush hours, with limited service on weekends. Metro North and Amtrak connections are available from the New Haven Union Station.
Located within town are two state parks, Cockaponset State Forest in the northern portion of town, and Hammonasset State Park and Beach located on the southeastern edge of Madison. Hammonasset Park consists of 930 acres and 558 campsites and has concessions, bathhouses, a pavilion, and picnic areas. Parking for 7,000 vehicles is available for bathers and campers alike, with overall park capacity rated to serve 16,000 people. The park also provides a fi shing jetty for surf and boat fi shing.
The town uses a Plan of Development to maintain its rural and seashore character. Under the Town Charter, the Planning and Zoning Commission is responsible for approval of all projects. Zoning regulations were fi rst adopted in 1953, and have been revised since that time. The town is completely zoned, with approximately 80% of the land zoned residential, with one- to two-acre lots, and
the remainder of the town zoned commercial or light industrial. The areas zoned for one acre include apartment or condominium units. As part of the town’s development plan, open space and preservation of the seashore and rural character of the town are major goals. To that end, the town has provided for three parks, including the Surf Club Beach area, a 45-acre beach/recreation facility owned by the town that provides beaches; a picnic area; and basketball, bocce, and volleyball courts, as well as baseball, softball, football and soccer fi elds.
The values of new homes range from $300,000 to in excess of $6 million. The average selling price of single-family homes is $500,000.
The Madison downtown business district has an active Chamber of Commerce and an active shopping and commercial area located in the south-central part of the community, extending both east and west along the Boston Post Road, as well as the area to the east of the Route 80 traffi c circle.
The town provides educational opportunities, with public schools from grades k through 12. In addition, within town there are two private schools for grades pre-k through 8, one private school for grades k through 12, and one private school for grades 7 through 12, as well as several pre-school programs. Colleges and universities a short distance from town include Middlesex Community College and Wesleyan University, both in Middletown, approximately 20 miles north of Madison. To the west are Albertus Magnus College, Gateway Community College, Southern Connecticut State University, the University of New Haven, and Yale University, all located in the Greater New Haven area.

Bauer ParkThe town of Madison also maintains Bauer Park on Copse Road.
The park has been set up for open space use, agriculture, gardens, trails, and nature activities, and encompasses 64-plus acres with 40 acres located on the west side of Copse Road and 24 acres on the east side, just north of Hunter’s Trail. The farm buildings on the property include the farmhouse, barn, tool shed, garage, and an outhouse. These buildings are utilized for nature study activities and a farm museum. There are open fi elds, forestland, wetlands, and hills to explore in the park, as well as trails. There are also two areas used by organic gardeners as community gardens south of the farmhouse. To the west of the ponds is an area used as a butterfl y and bird habitat garden as part of an outdoor classroom area. Periodically, walks and nature tours are held on the weekend by local naturalists.
Bauer Farm MuseumThe Bauer Farm Museum is located in the restored barn and
houses a collection of historical tools, books, furniture, and other items that would have been used during the time the Bauers farmed this property. Some of the items belonged to the Bauers themselves and many others have been collected or donated by Madison residents.
Griswold ParkThe town purchased the former Griswold Airport Property in
2010 and is in the process of developing nature trails and playing fi elds for future use on this 42-acre parcel.
Hammonasset Beach State Park Hammonasset Beach State Park is the largest beach in the state
of Connecticut, and is maintained by the State Department of Environmental Protection. It is comprised of more than 900 acres of open land, campsites, trails, and two miles of beachfront. The campground has 558 open sites, and reservations are required. Meigs Point Nature Center is located within the park and offers programs and activities for park visitors on a limited year-round basis. To visit the Nature Center, bear to the left at the access road rotary, go halfway around the rotary, and follow the signs toward Meigs Point. The Center is on the left across from the Meigs Point bathhouse.
Rockland PreserveRockland Preserve is located in North Madison, west of Route
79 and just south of the Madison/Durham border. It is an area of rounded, rocky hills, steep gray cliffs, ledges, and lovely wooded areas. Long abandoned ancient roads offer easy access for the walker and hiker. The centerpiece of the property is an area known as Coan Pond. A pond no more, it has become a fen; much like a bog with black, damp soil, thick grasses, and shrubs. Coan Pond offers scenic views to all who visit its shores. Walk among the oaks, past huge glacial boulders and laurel thickets. The small pond at the edge of Coan Pond harbors water lilies, frogs and turtles, as well as a large variety of wildfl owers. There is no admission fee.
Boat RampsAlthough Madison does not have a harbor, it’s possible to put a
boat in the water at a State ramp located on the east bank of the East River at the western end of Neck Road. It is open year-round. There is no dock, and boats are trailered. The access road and parking lot are
gravel with a concrete plank ramp. There is no disability access. There is also a ramp at Meigs Point in Hammonasset Beach State
Park for Car Top/Carry-In. It is open year-round with no dock. The access road and parking lot are paved, the ramp is sand. There is no disability access.
Town ServicesBeach & Recreation Department
The department is located at 8 Campus Dr., Madison, CT, 06443. Offi ce hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The department hosts a wide variety of programs for children, adults, and seniors, as well as the Before and After School program. The Before and After School program is offered at Island Avenue School, Jeffrey School, Ryerson Elementary School, and Brown School (no before school program). Passes are available for purchase by residents and taxpayers for Open Gym and also for the Town Campus fi tness room, and fees vary depending on use and age. Hours of availability change depending on time of year and recreational programs scheduled in the facility. The Beach & Recreation Program Guide is distributed through The Source Newspaper, a free weekly publication, four times a year. You can also view program offerings at www.madisonrec.com. For more information, call the offi ce at 203-245-5623. Call the weather hotline for program cancellation information due to inclement weather at 203-245-5600, ext. 7411.
Emergency Medical AssistanceAccessed via 911, the town is served by the Madison Ambulance
Association, Inc. (M.A.A.), a local, private, nonprofi t association whose general management is provided by a volunteer board of directors. Staffed by a mixture of full- and part-time EMTs and EMT-Ps on duty 24/7 ready to respond to our citizens, M.A.A. relies on a mixture of funds to operate, including fee for service, citizen donations, and town subsidy. The Madison Police Department and the North Madison Fire Department also provide emergency medical fi rst responders. The area hospitals are the Middlesex Memorial Hospital, 17 miles north in Middletown; and Yale-New Haven Hospital and St. Raphael’s Hospital, which are located in New Haven, 22 miles to the west. These facilities are aided by a Shoreline Clinic in the town of Westbrook, 14 miles east, and the 30,000 square foot Yale-New Haven Shoreline Medical Center, 5 miles west in Guilford.

Wilbur W. Pardee Youth CenterThe Youth Center, also known as the Arts Barn, provides a safe,
supervised environment for middle and high school students in which to spend their leisure time. The coffee-house-like atmosphere gives teens a place to gather with friends informally, or to attend regularly scheduled weekend events. Parents can feel comfortable letting their children visit the Arts Barn, as all activities are supervised by staff and adult volunteers, and the center is drug- and alcohol-free. Located on Madison’s town campus, the Arts Barn building includes a café, game room, quiet area, and multi-purpose room. The center is equipped with computers, TV/DVD players, a game and video library, and ping-pong and pool tables. The center’s large stage and extensive sound equipment provide the venue for all weekend activities.

(SCGRC), consisting of representatives of the Chambers of Commerce of Madison, Guilford, Branford, North Branford, East Haven, Clinton, Westbrook, and Old Saybrook, was formed in 2003 to “inform, educate, and infl uence the Connecticut General Assembly about issues affecting the communities of the shoreline region.” SCGRC has hosted a number of seminars on a variety of topics primarily concerning transportation and industry along the shoreline. They were instrumental in representing the region in efforts to save the sub base in Groton, they maintain a continuing dialogue with the Connecticut Department of Transportation regarding the I-95/Q Bridge construction project and its impact on commuters and transportation through the southern corridor of Connecticut and are credited with supporting and encouraging legislation that is intended to improve service along the rail line that connects New Haven to Old Saybrook (The Shoreline East), and eventually on to New London. The Madison Foundation supports programs that serve our community’s social, environmental, educational, cultural and recreational needs. In 2009, The Foundation’s new Neighbor-to-Neighbor program raised and donated thousands of dollars to provide emergency assistance to local families hurt by the deep recession. We continue these efforts in 2010. If you’d like to apply for a grant or help us help our community with a volunteer initiative or contribution, we’d like to hear from you!
