PROGRAM HISTORY

the united states Hunter Jumper association was created in 2004, with the mission of advancing and representing the hunter and jumper disciplines by fostering an educated community of equestrians that promote the welfare of the horse and fairness in competition.

the usHJa High Performance Hunter Program was created in 2007 to bring the tradition and art of horsemanship back to the show ring. the usHJa International Hunter Derby classes showcase the High Performance Hunters by providing them with the opportunity to compete over courses and obstacles that highlight the tradition and excitement of the American Hunter Discipline and System and to earn significant prize money in the feature class at many of the country’s most prestigious horse shows. The eventual goal is to receive approval of the hunters as an international discipline from the FeI.

the mission of the usHJa High Performance Hunter Committee is to advance the sport of show hunters and to bring it to the international level. Committee members are dedicated to preserving:

• The traditional principles of hunter riding

• The ideals of brilliance, correct jumping style, and the athletic ability of the show hunter

• True collaboration of horse and rider at the highest level of training and competition

• Sportsmanship and the welfare of the show hunter

the usHJa International Hunter Derby Demonstrations held during the alltech FeI World equestrian Games at the Kentucky Horse Park in 2010 proved a huge draw and confirmed a worldwide interest in show hunters. the concept of the Hunter Derby was presented to a large eclectic audience that could potentially assist the usHJa in its mission to receive approval of hunters as an international discipline from the FeI by returning home and initiating the same type of competition in their own countries.

the 2010-11 Competition series saw an ever increasing number of horses and riders participating in forty-four usHJa International Hunter Derby classes nationwide that combined, offer more than half a million dollars in prize money. the usHJa International Hunter Derby is quickly becoming a catalyst to bring people from around the world to our sport.

meet susan schoellkopf — a Happy Over achiever

there are not many in the equestrian world who are not familiar with the name Susan [Susie to friends] Schoellkopf. Her resume reads like a who’s who biography with countless victories in the Hunter discipline, national awards, and five National Horse of the year titles – national Gabriel, Kansas, Big Bad Wolf, GG Valentine, and of course Jersey Boy. the horse who most spectators come to International Hunter Derbies to watch compete. Jersey Boy or “Lewis” as he’s known at home is well on the way to becoming one of the most revered horses in the Hunter discipline and at merely 9 years-old has amassed quite the resume. “lewis” has been the leading Derby money Winner for 3 straight years and over the past 12 months has won 13 usHJa International Hunter Derbies, was asked to participate in the Hunter Derby demonstration at the 2010 World Equestrian Games, and finished the 2010 season as useF regular Working Horse of the year.

Clearly Jersey Boy is a bit of an over achiever, but perhaps that’s what drew Susie to the captivating chestnut gelding nearly 4 years ago. “We were in saugerties [ny], louise serio and Val renihan owned him together, but neither one of them had time so louise asked me to look at him and I thought he was interesting. Of course he could jump. I just didn’t really have a spot, but I bought him and said to Jen [Alfano] “yeah he’ll make someone a really cute horse.” Susie laughed and added, “Thank God it was Jen- he’s made a great horse for her.” Susie also provided some insight on Lewis’s personality away from the ring and cheering fans, “He’s always trying to figure out some way to cause mischief – in a fun spirit, there’s nothing mean about him. And he really likes the girls at home to pamper him and he adores Jen! Always wants her attention.” Lewis is also known for being far too intelligent at times; Susie explained that he can be difficult to ride because, “He’s a really, really smart horse. Believes he knows all the answers, you have to prove to him that he needs to trust us.”

Over achieving would be something susie knows a thing or two about. she began riding at the tender age of 3-though in a Western saddle then. soon enough she made the switch to Hunters and began accumulating accolade after accolade. As both a junior and amateur rider she qualified for Devon and the National Horse Show held at Madison Square Garden in new york City. Based in Buffalo, ny, sBs Farms is located on what susie considers to be hallowed grounds. Originally built in 1922 as The Buffalo Saddle and Bridle Club, the facility’s claim to fame remains its Indoor arena- one of the largest in the nation and now home to the acclaimed Buffalo therapeutic riding Center and top show barn sBs Farms. this is the facility where susie grew up and for more than 35 years she has served as Director of sBs Farms with a commit-ment to providing quality services to the equestrian community. this commitment stretches beyond the farm gates or the show ring, susie proudly serves as the Chairperson for both Zone 2 and the Hunter task Force, dedicated member of the usHJa Junior Hunter Committee, the High Performance Hunters Committee, the Hunter restructure Committee, and the USEF Equine Drugs & Medications Committee as well as being a licensed judging official. All this while training and winning with some of the most talented riders and horses in both the USA and Canada, such as Jersey Boy’s pilot Jennifer Alfano- a two time World Champion Hunter Rider Pro-Finals winner. When asked what she finds most satisfying after nearly four decades of top calls, her eyes swelled with pride as the words were spoken, “In a lifetime of being with the horses, it’s a real joy to see Jen and Jersey Boy, they’re a definitely team-and how often do we really see that? They know each other like the back of their hand. He’s never been an easy horse in the ring and I think in the wrong hands he could’ve been a bad horse. Their bond is very special. All the years of having top horses, it’s always been someone else’s win or it’s been with the risk or fact that we’ve had to sell the horses, so I think it’s on a different level when it’s one of your own going in the ring. He’s [Jersey Boy] fun to have. It really doesn’t matter what happens when he goes, he owes me nothing, but when he does win it’s an extra thrill.” Another source of great pride for Susie are the horse owners associated with SBS, “Jen’s [Alfano] been with me for 20 years and we’ve had some fabulous horses and with them great-great owners. Helen lenahan is amazing; miss lucy is such a good horse. Barbara Kearney has just been unbelievable to us; we have a bunch of GG Valentine babies coming along. And now Billie Steffee joins us.” Susie’s over achiever bug seems to be contagious among the steeds at SBS Farms, and no one’s complaining.

C. All ties for other than first (1st) place in the Overall standings after the Handy Hunter Round will be broken using the Handy Hunter Round base scores (before adding height and handy bonus points) of the designated overall placings tie breaking Judging Panel.

D. No Judging Panel may award the same base score to any two competitors in any one Round.
