GRADUATION 2011 3
They both excelled in my math classes and I expect nothing but success in their future. They can write their own ticket and go wherever they want to.
- Math teacher Mark Lowther
They’re both really talented and have lots of academic potential.Katy spent a week at the international science fair, and it was nice to see her get excit-
ed about seeing all the exhibits and meeting people from around the world. And Joey isjust outgoing person and hardworking. I think they both have excellent potential and
they should do great things in the future. - Science teacher Shelby Alexander
They’re both very adept at what they’re doing. They’re intelligent, polite, and they liketo achieve above and beyond what is required of them. They’re very fun individuals,Joey especially, and he could be fun without carrying it too far, and that’s important.
- Science teacher Bernadette Hiles
I think they’re both absolutely wonderful students and people. And I taught them! With them it was all smiles, good answers, fun and they were
engaged students that I will miss. Watch out because they’re coming on and they’ll bothblaze a trail that we’ll see for decades.
- English teacher Wanda Alexander
They certainly earned this honor with four years of hard and consistent work. Joey hasa very good sense of humor, very lighthearted, but when it was time to work he did.
Katy was very diligent, had a great sense of humor – different than Joey’s – but she wasa good leader. They have the skills, personality, character and the drive to succeed, and I
think they’ll represent our community very well. - History teacher Shawn Barringer
What will I remember about Katy? ‘Where are your keys?’Good job and congratulations to both of them.
- History teacher Loretta Crawford
At St. Teresa, they were good students, they were dedicated, and I knew they weregoing to go places. They were involved in athletics, but they were also committed stu-dents. They would always say ‘Good morning,’ or ‘Good afternoon Mr. Garcia.’ Theyshowed character – something that is missing in some youngsters. They also helped the
younger students through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program.- Former St. Teresa School principal Jerry Garcia

“Hard work pays off,” said
Jacques Michael Ray, the 2011
Laguna Acoma High School
Valedictorian and standout
scholar of his senior class.
“I have accomplished some-
thing I knew I could do
and I am the first in my
family to do so,” Ray said
proudly.
“My parents pushed me
and told me that hard
work pays off,” said Ray.
His parents are Eldon
Torivio and Tina Torivio
from McCartys. Ray
comes from Acoma,
Laguna and Spanish
descent.
After graduation he
plans to enlist in the U.S.
Air Force. “My goal is to
fly planes and to work
with new aviation technol-
ogy,” said Ray.
Ray attributed his suc-
cess to many individuals,
including his parents, grandpar-
ents and teachers. Two teachers
he spoke highly about were
Susan Kaster and Arthur Matte.
He expressed that both of these
teachers emphasized that edu-
cation never has a “stopping
point.”
Salutatorian John Mark
Zabzdyr is the son of Marie
Zabzdyr from the village of
Paguate. Zabzdyr is of Filipino
descent.
John attributes his success to
his mother, a single parent. “My
mom kept pushing me and now
it has happened. I hope that by
graduating I have repaid her
back and made her happy.”
After the separation of his
father and mother, he said, the
family moved to Paguate to stay
with his aunt Mildred Pacheco.
“Pacheco, who was actually was
my mom’s friend took us in and
made us part of her family. My
aunt encouraged me to better
myself in my own way,” said
Zabzdyr.
In addition, he acknowledged
the teachers who influenced
him to stay in school. He identi-
fied his English teacher Susan
Kaster, who according to
Zabzdyr, “taught English not
like a foreign language.” He
also acknowledged Mr.
Woodward, his welding
class teacher for his
dealing with cancer.
“By his courage I have
been inspired to never
give up,” said John.
John plans to attend
Central New Mexico
Community College
and then transfer to the
University of New
Mexico, where he plans
to attain a Mechanical
and Electrical
Engineering degree.
Both students agreed
that the one activity that
stood out in their atten-
dance at Laguna-
Acoma High School
was their involvement in pub-
lishing the yearbook.
Academic Advisor Debbie
Sanchez confidently stated that
“both are excellent students
and hard workers and there is
no doubt they will be successful
in whatever career paths the
take.”
