2011 SEASON PREVIEW

The 2011 Women’s Tennis program returns after a one year hiatus. This new squad features nine new

faces and one returner from the 2009 team. This team offers much desire and spirit and I’m excited to see how they’ll perform especially in the Orange Empire Conference which has ruled Women’s Tennis in the CCCAA.

Returning to the Chargers is Nicole El-Ali from the 2009 team. El-Ali played in the #1/2 position for Cypress and met with very tough competition. She teamed up with Yvonne Jara to play #1 doubles and had some success in conference play. Her experiencing playing in those posi-tions should provide some solidity to the Charger line up where this year El-Ali looks to play in the #3/4 position. El-Ali is a good player and an even better stu-dent. I’m extremely glad to have her back.

The Chargers welcome nine new

freshman. Looking to make an immedi-ate impact are Jamee Biadora from Car-son, CA. Biadora brings the most playing experience on the team as she success-fully competed in junior tournaments and in high school. Biadora is a tough com-petitor who should make a dent in the always tough Orange Empire Conference. Chelsea Logan comes to us from Cerri-tos, CA. Logan has been named the Cap-tain of team and has displayed exemplary leadership and baking skills. Logan has steadily improved since joining the squad in the fall and looks to test her skills in competition. Also joining the Chargers is Theresa ‘Tree’ Roque from Corona, CA. Roque has a feisty spirit and is a tough player. Roque brings experience from high school play and also from playing in USTA Jr. Team Tennis. The rest of the freshman squad look to bolster and deep-en the Charger line up which is definitely key to winning matches.

Coach Michelle Esquivel will be the key to the Charger Women’s Tennis programs success. Esquivel brings an impressive resume as a former stand-out player for conference rival Orange Coast College where she won Conference, Ojai, and State as an individual and with her team. From OCC Esquivel played under scholarship for Concordia University in Irvine. Michelle is a great role model for these young ladies. They can definitely benefit from her experience as a player because she knows what it takes to be the best and compete at a high level.

The future of the Charger’s Women’s Tennis program looks bring. We look to elevate the team to the high standard of success here at Cypress College especially with our highly touted women’s softball, soccer, basketball and volleyball pro-grams. Thank you to all who support our program and we look forward to seeing you out on the tennis courts.

“This team offers much desire and spirit and I’m excited to see how they’ll perform”

COACHING STAFF

JEFF BENITOHead Coach2nd Season

University of La Verne

Benito came to Cypress to take over his first collegiate head coaching job after five sea-sons at conference rival Riverside College.

He immediately made an impact taking over a dilapidated program earning two conference championships and two playoff appearances in just his first three years on the Men’s side. Beni-to’s accomplishments have been recognized by fellow coaches and was named the Orange Em-pire Conference Coach of the Year in each of his first three years. He splits his time between the Men and Women’s program for the Chargers.

At Riverside, Benito served as the Tigers’

men’s and women’s assistant coach. While at Riverside, he was part of the staff that kept the women’s program’s success on track while turn-ing around the men’s program earning a confer-ence championship in 2006 and two top ten fin-ishes in 2006 and 2007.

Benito played at Riverside while earning his associates degree before moving on to University of La Verne to earn his bachelors in kinesiology and then to Cal Baptist where he earned his mas-ters in kinesiology as well. Benito also keeps busy working for the USTA/SCTA as the Area League Commissioner for Junior Team Tennis.

MICHELLE ESQUIVELAssistant Coach

2nd Season

This is Esquivel’s first season as assistant coach with women’s tennis at Cypress. She has experience instructing at both Tustin Hills Racquet club and Upland Tennis Club as a

teaching pro. As a former collegiate athlete, she attended Santa Ana College her freshman year and became the first woman in California Community College history to win the singles state title while concurrently attending Sunny Hills High School. During her sophomore sea-son at Orange Coast College, she was undefeated in singles and led her team to win the Cali-fornia Community College dual team. Esquivel also won the prestigious Ojai Championship in 2005 and State Championships in singles and doubles with partner Jessica Rice that same year. She finished at Concordia University, Irvine on scholarship and became ranked #17 nationally for women’s singles in NAIA. Currently finishing her degree in Exercise Sport Science with emphasis on teaching and coaching, Esquivel hopes to bring her experience and tennis knowledge to bolster the Cypress College Tennis program.

CYPRESS ATHLETICS

Cypress Community Col-lege boasts a well rounded physical education cur-

riculum along with a successful sports program featuring 13 in-tercollegiate teams and a strong support staff of professionals. The school also has a wheelchair bas-ketball program. Student-athletes are provided quality individual instruction, the chance to de-velop to their full potential and the oppor-tunity to earn a four-year col-lege or univer-sity scholar-ship. C y p r e s s , which offers seven sports for women and six for men, has had a solid line-up of teams and indi-vidual athletes who have excelled since the college first opened its doors in 1966. In recent years, the baseball, softball, women’s soccer and women’s basketball programs

have taken center stage. In 1997 the baseball and softball squads, coached by brothers Scott and Brad Pickler, captured state championships. The baseball crown was the third

of the 1990s under the direction of Scott Pickler who has over 700 wins in his 22 years at the school and captured the state championship again in 2003. Trevor Hoffman of the San Diego Padres, who played at Cypress in 1986 and 1987, is a four-

time Major League all-star and holds the MajorLeague record for career saves. Brad Pickler, has also had a great deal of success. He has led the softball team to a record six state titles while winning over 1,000 games. The Chargers were the first Cali-fornia school to capture three consecutive state championships (1997, 1998, 1999).

Cypress only start-ed playing intercolle-giate women’s soccer in 1991, but the late Ray Haas quickly built the program into a consistent winner. The Chargers won State Championships in 1998, 1999 and 2004.

Cypress’ 27-0 season in 1999 was rewarded with a No. 1 national ranking by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Cypress captured its first women’s basketball championship in 2005. Margaret Mohr’s team set a school record with 28 wins

against five defeats. Cypress enjoys strong support from the community and student body, who are part of the traditionally popular athletic pro-gram.
