DIANNE BARCLAY (YORKPARK)

I would like to thank the Airedale Terrier Club of Victoria Inc. for inviting me to judge their prestigiousChampionship Show in June 2011.

My husband and I purchased our first two Airedales from the infamous Lorna Schuster, stalwart andlong time past member of the club. Our first Airedale was Hillmere Valiant, named after my nana‘Saunders’, followed by Ch. Hillmere Winall ‘Angus MacDuff’. ‘Mac’, (as he was known to our manyAiredale friends and customers at our Wholesale nursery) an Aust Ch. Siccawei Baronet son and a Ch.Drakehall Dragoon grandson, was our constant Airedale in so many ways, spending every moment ofthe day with us in our business until the day he died at l3years of age. ‘Mac’ was missed by all whoknew him including ‘Danny’ the Shetland pony who often enjoyed running in our paddock with ‘Mac.

Lorna Schuster mentored us in grooming, showing and the importance of a breed club. She invited usto join and serve on committee, even encouraged us to do obedience and conformation over manyyears. Looking back, this is some 34 years ago, during this time due to Lorna’s dedication the A.T.C.V.had an active and enthusiastic team displaying either obedience or agility at public demonstrations.David and I continue to serve in the dog world actively running the annual high profile Lillydale KennelClub All Breeds show with friends we met in our early days of The Airedale Terrier Club of Vic.

Humbly thinking back to our first attempts at grooming, showing and breeding, we recently achievedfantastic success in U.S.A. both at Hatboro D.C. (Best Opposite Sex) and Airedale Terrier Club ofAmerica (Best Winners) winning in top competition with our homebred Ch Yorkpark Tzarah. Cam-paigned briefly in Australia, groomed by myself and shown by David she flew to U.S.A. for final touchesby expert trimmers. David showed her under breeder/judges at the Mecca weekend for terriers – wehave thoroughly enjoyed the sport of dogs! The AKC determined foreign born competitors in “Bred By”class should also have an AKC registration number and subsequently Tzarah was ineligible for thepoints. That’s dog shows!!

In l990 we imported, from Sweden, Ch. Pinto Wish Upon A Star in whelp to Ch Malmangen Stranger inParadise. ‘Russin’ subsequently produced a lovely litter in quarantine. We were the first Airedalebreeder to import frozen semen from U.S.A. from American Ch M.J. Stone Ridge Chosen One, a multiwinner of the Airedale Terrier Club of America Best of Breed Bowl. The effort combined to form thebackground for our breeding and we salute their breeders for all the fine points they have passed on toour Yorkpark kennel.

Looking back, dogs and cats were always in my life. My first memory was of my mother’s Pekingese‘Fluffy ‘ draped around her neck. As a ‘toy’ he was dressed up and endlessly pushed like a doll in apram . The favorite dog by far was ‘Timmy’ our much loved French Toy Poodle who lasted forever andseemed to be in everyone’s life.

My first 4 Airedales shared show time with my mother’s show Boxer ‘Karl’ who needed much training inthe manners department, bouncing off terriers meant he got retired early. My Nana Saunders influ-enced me in my love of dogs and cats. Her great passion of cats is an untold story, but she always hadfar too many, like Nana I adore cats and have owned three memorable cats. Currently I am satisfiedwith a Welsh Terrier in my lap— the other breed we adore and show.

VIVA THE AIREDALE TERRIER …… FOREVER………….HAVE A GREAT DAY

We were fortunate when we bought Jutta that Frau Meyer allowed us to name her with the proviso thatit must begin with J which is how we arrived at Jutta after my good friend and Jumbuck to indicate ourconnection with Australia.Jutta started travelling at an early age spending her first Christmas in Italy. (She has been to manyEuropean countries travelling by car, train, ferry and plane.) She was a great traveller who would hap-pily sit for hours looking out the back window of the car. (Unfortunately she wasn’t so good at staying inher room as she had very quickly learnt how to open doors. On more than one occasion she’d escapeand come creeping down the stairs to greet us.) In restaurants Jutta would happily sit under the table(as is the custom for dogs in Europe) a habit which she still has. It is usual for the waitress to bring outa bowl of water for her before serving us.Jutta’s show career was short as she didn’t enjoy the ring. (You will probably see this today.) Her high-est achievement was second in a junior class at the 2002 national Dutch Airedale show.Jutta came home with us in 2003 and had a litter of nine in 2004. Her daughter (Wuschel) also had alitter of nine in 2007. Jutta’s grandson Felix is here today.I have many happy memories of Jutta as a puppy. Her first friends were some whippets but her bestfriend in Germany was Tayla a standard poodle from Canada. Jutta loved to run and enjoyed the free-dom of the open fields of our village. She has always loved water and would go for a dip in the creekeven when there was snow on the ground. Snow bought her much enjoyment. It was a delight to seeher flying around a field of virgin snow leaving her footprints everywhere.Jutta’s first and best friend in Australia is Jessie (an Airedale) who we met on our first walk at RuffeyPark where Jutta would always have her dip in the lake. Jutta has a lovely nature and happily allowedJessie to meet her pups. She also took a grandmotherly interest In Wuschel’s litter and enjoyed playingwith them.Jutta is now the matriarch who spends a lot of her day sleeping. However, she does enjoy her gardenand will happily sit out there contemplating or simply chewing a bone.
