BASEBALL • SEASON PREVIEW

For a variety of reasons, the tried-and-true statement of pitching and defense wins baseball games should apply greatly to the 2011 Canisius College baseball team . From the 2010 MAAC regular-season championship team, the Golden Griffins lose four of their top six hitters from a group that went 39-21 and 19-5 in the MAAC . Combine that with losing their 3-4-5 hitters after the 2009 season, and the Golden Griffins have graduated a lot of production from their offense the last two seasons . However, the Griffs return two of their three starting pitchers from the weekend rotation, their top two mid-week starters, two relievers from the back-end of the bullpen as well as three-fourths of the starting infield . And then there’s the biggest story in college baseball this offseason – the bats . Effective Jan . 1, a new bat standard went into effect with the goal of making non-wood bats meet a standard so they perform comparable to wood bats . For the Golden Griffins, even with all of those changes, not much has changed for seventh-year coach Mike McRae. “We should be very good de-fensively . We can cover a lot of ground in the outfield and will make the plays in the infield,” McRae said . “The bats are such an unknown that no one knows how they will affect the game . Everyone is talking about them, but we don’t know . “It doesn’t change our prepara-tion . We’re going to throw strikes, make plays and run the bases .” That preparation doesn’t need to change very much after winning 116 games the past three years – the most by any team in the Northeast or Mid-west . Canisius is also the only team in the Northeast to win 35 games or more each of the last three seasons and ranks 29th nationally with the 116 wins . In the past, the apparent strength of this team has been its offense, which has put up some gaudy numbers the last three seasons and shattered the record books . However, the evolution of the team is turning toward its depth on the mound – quality depth . “We have a lot of very good arms that provide a lot of different looks to our opponents,” McRae said . “I feel we have a lot of depth on the mound, going 10 or 11 deep, and I’m pretty confident in that number being not just arms, but quality arms we can throw at our opponents .”

STARTING PITCHING The Golden Griffin pitching staff will be led by fifth-year senior Shane Davis, the winningest pitcher in program history who has a shot at the MAAC victories record . Davis, who broke the program record for victories as a sopho-more, is 30-6 his career . The Belmont, Ontario native has accumulated a number of awards — 2008 MAAC Pitcher of the Year, 2008 MAAC Rookie of the Year, an All-American after that season and two-time all-MAAC First-Team selection . Davis needs nine wins to become the winningest pitcher in MAAC history . He ranks fourth in program history in ERA (4 .52) among pitchers with at least 100 innings pitched and first in walks per nine innings (2 .40) . “It’s very nice to have a guy who can eat innings and give you a chance to win each start,” McRae said . “Our team is confident when Shane takes the mound .” Fifth-year senior Chris Cox solidified the No . 2 spot in the rotation last season . Cox, who pitched sparingly during his first three seasons, grabbed a hold of the No . 2 spot in the weekend rotation to go 4-1 in seven starts dur-

ing MAAC play, striking out 67 batters in 69 .2 innings pitched on the season . He has carried over the confidence gained from the 2010 season to give Canisius two fifth-year seniors at the top of the rotation . “Chris was good from early on in non-conference last season, but now he is even better,” McRae said . “He has some, if not the best stuff in the league when you put his velocity, arsenal and movement together . Last year was a tremendous boost for his confidence .” The third spot in the weekend rotation for conference play is up for grabs between four pitchers — junior Alex Tufts, redshirt sophomore Billy

Martin, sophomore Scott Whitehead and freshman Garrett Cortright . In non-conference play, the Griffs have a number of four-game series, which will allow this quartet to compete for the No . 3 spot in the rotation during MAAC play . Whoever doesn’t move into the weekend rotation will start for the Griffs during mid-week games as well as be available in the bullpen .

BULLPENThe Griffs lose their two-headed closer monster with the graduation of Shayne Willson and Andrew Van’tWout . The duo combined for 10 saves and seven victories in 33 appearances last season as a hard-throwing, late-inning, righty-lefty combination . Entering the season, McRae said junior Ryan Fennell and sophomore Jordan Cave would be given the opportunity

to seize the closer role . Fennell, who has a long frame at 6-foot-4, continues to improve, allowing zero or one earned run in 11 of 17 appearances last season . Cave also developed throughout his freshman season as he posted a 3 .86 ERA in his final nine appearances, throwing 1 .2 score-less innings against Rider in the MAAC Championship . Freshman Jon Fitzsim-mons also has a shot to be the closer as the season progresses . McRae expects the role of senior Josh Marshall to change into more of a situational lefty . Marshall tied for fourth in the conference with six wins last season and tied the program record with 22 appearances . That number of appearances figures to increase with Marshall being on the mound for fewer batters but more often . McRae also sees roles for redshirt junior Tim Seil as well as redshirt sophomore Nathan Linseman and freshman John DiMura .

INFIELD The names that have been a part of the Canisius College offense the past five years are scattered throughout the record books — Kevin Mahoney, Kevin Mailloux, Branson Joseph, Shayne Willson, Ian Choy, Steve McQuail and Perry Silverman . McRae has worked to build talent throughout the classes, featuring a combination of returning veterans and talented newcomers . Starting behind the plate, the Griffs will have a new starter after Paul Panik making a career-high 34 starts and 38 appearances last season, hit-ting .278 with five home runs and 33 RBI . The return of Andrew Russo to the program has given Canisius some experience at catcher as the senior goes into the start of the season as the starter . “Andrew has had a tremendous fall and preseason,” McRae said . “You can see the growth and maturity out of him .” Russo appeared in 16 games during the 2009 season and had a pinch-hit grand slam against Fairfield . Sophomore Kevin Whitehead and freshman Tim Coykendall will also see time at catcher, earning starts on the weekend and in mid-week contests . Four-year starter Brian Burton had his best season as a junior when

Junior Ryan Fennell allowed one or zero run in 11 of his 17 appearances

SEASON PREVIEW • BASEBALL

he earned All-MAAC First-Team honors as a first baseman and also earned MAAC All-Tournament Team honors for the second consecutive season . Burton ranked second in the MAAC in RBI (68), third in home runs (17) and ninth in batting average ( .373) while hitting .453 with nine home runs and 39 RBI in league play . “Brian should be a productive hitter in the middle of our batting order,” McRae said . “He does a good job communicating on the field . He has always been solid defensively and has gotten even better throughout his career .” The lone spot in the infield without a returning starter is at second base with the departure of McQuail . The 30th-round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays became the first junior to be selected in the Major League Draft since 1994 . McQuail had one of the best seasons in program history, hitting .397 with 20 home runs and 81 RBI en route to being named a Third-Team All-American . Freshman Jose Torralba will be the starter at second base . Torralba played with the Ontario Blue Jays, who won the AABC North Atlantic Regional Championship in 2010 . Along with Torralba, freshman Ralph Alloco may see time at second and as a utility infielder . “Jose is a pretty advanced player for a freshman . He has a lot of good experience prior to coming to Canisius . He’s shows a lot of compo-sure,” McRae said . One player who came into his own last season after entering the program with high accolades was shortstop Sean Jamieson . The Niagara County Community College transfer earned All-MAAC First-Team honors, hitting .371 with 66 runs scored and 52 RBI . Jamieson had a consecutive games streak of 21 games without an error, a long streak for a middle infielder . “Sean is the guy that needs to be the leader for this team this season,” McRae said . “It took some time for him to adjust to the Division I level, but once he bought in, he experienced a lot of success .” Replacing four-year starter Kevin Mahoney at third base was a big challenge for the Griffs, and that job went to Drew Pettit. The junior also improved throughout the 2010 season, reaching base in 15 of the final 17 games of the season and ending the year on an eight-game hitting streak . “Drew has made a vast improvement in his all-around game from where he was at this point last season,” McRae said . “He is far more confident and that has carried over to his offense and defense .” The designated hitter position appears to be a platoon situa-tion heading into the season, deemed a “wide-open battle” by McRae . Sophomore Kevin Whitehead is the primary left-handed option with freshmen Shane Zimmer and Jimmy Luppens serving as the right-handed options . McRae looks to match up with the opposing pitcher and also ride the hot bat .

OUTFIELDCanisius primarily has six outfielders to use this season, with the com-mon theme throughout being speed . That will allow the Griffs to “cover a lot of ground,” especially with the combination of senior Will Cho-micki, freshman Ryan Coppinger and sophomore Chris Gruarin. Chomicki was one of the team’s most improved players during the 2010 season . Primarily used as a pinch runner and late-inning defen-sive replacement during his freshman and sophomore seasons, Chomicki grabbed a hold of the left field spot in the later third of the season . The Poughkeepsie, N .Y . native made 36 starts, with the Griffs going 26-10 in his starts . The speedy outfielder had 13 steals and an on-base percentage of .438 – 146 points higher than his batting average . “The thing about Will Chomicki is that he competes,” McRae said . “He is a battler . As a coach, you want those guys on the field .” Coppinger looks to be the staring centerfielder for the Griffs . Last season, Silverman started in center and had a career year after the gradua-tion of Joseph, who was a four-year starter for the Griffs . A three-time First-

Team All-State selection in New Hampshire, Coppinger has the opportunity to man center field for a long time at the Demske Sports Complex . “We have high expectations that Ryan can be a dynamic player,” McRae said . “He might not be our leadoff hitter from day one as that can be a high-pressure spot . But I can see it happening throughout the season .” Another transfer from NCCC and former Golden Griffin Matt Clingersmith, Gruarin should receive the first opportunity to start in right field . Gruarin hit .330 with eight home runs last season and looks to take over for Willson . “Chris has a lot of tools, but it make take him some time to make the adjustment to Division I baseball,” McRae said . “He’ll need to battle through them and not give in to the frustrations .” The other three Griffs who will see time in the outfield are Zimmer, redshirt sophomore Jarred Flock, who hit .429 with runners in scoring position last year, and senior Nat Barone .

SCHEDULE AND OUTLOOKThe Golden Griffins will play a challenging non-conference schedule to get them ready for conference play . It starts for the second consecutive season with a neutral-site series at the USA Baseball Complex in North Carolina against Toledo and Creighton . Toledo was picked to finish sec-ond in the West Division in the Mid-American Conference after winning 34 games last season while Creighton was picked fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference after finishing second in the country in fielding per-centage last season . The Golden Griffins will then play two series against teams from some of the top conferences in the country, playing at SEC member Tennessee and at ACC member Maryland . The Griffs travel to Dayton for the Flyer Classic to face the host Dayton Flyers as well as Wright State and Oakland . Dayton was picked third in the Atlantic 10 while Wright State is the preseason favorite in the Horizon League after winning the regular-season title last year . On its Spring Break trip, Canisius will play Big East member West Virginia as well as Morehead State and its second SEC opponent of the year in Kentucky . During its bye weekend in confer-ence play, Canisius takes on George Washington . Scattered throughout the season are non-conference games against Buffalo, Le Moyne, Youngstown State and St . Bonaventure, including the home opener at the Demske Sports Complex against the Bonnies on Tuesday, March 29 . “I feel this is our toughest non-conference schedule in years,” McRae said . “We are playing a lot of tough teams from outside our area and region . We can’t take any days off .” Canisius starts defense of its 2010 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season title at Iona College on March 26-27, before returning home to host Marist the following weekend . The Griffs will host Saint Peter’s before playing three straight series on the road — at Manhattan, Rider and Siena . Each of those three teams was picked to fin-ish in the top half of the conference . The Griffs will wrap up the regular season with series against Fairfield and Niagara at the Demske Sports Complex, where Canisius has won 36 of its last 45 MAAC home games . If they can qualify for the postseason for the fifth consecutive season, the Griffs will be in search of their first postseason champion-ship . The MAAC Championship returns to Waterfront Park in Trenton, N .J . after a one-year hiatus . Canisius has advanced to the championship round in each of the last two years, only to come up short against Marist in 2009 and Rider in 2010 . “You hope it leaves a bitter taste in their mouths . If the mem-ory is still there, you want your team to use it as the right motivation moving forward” McRae said . “As we’ve seen the past few years, once you get to the MAAC Championship, nobody knows what will happen as each of those four teams can get to the NCAA Tournament .”

Mike McRaeHead Coach •

Seventh Season228-251 (.476) Overall122-105 (.537) MAAC

Mike McRae is in his seventh season as head coach of the Canisius College baseball program . McRae has led a total rebuilding project of the Golden Griffins, taking over a team that won four games in 2004 to three straight seasons of 35 wins or more .

McRae has a record of 163-165 in his six seasons at Canisius, including a 116-56 ( .674) record in the last three seasons and two MAAC regular-season titles .

McRae, the three-time MAAC Coach of the Year, has led Canisius to the postseason in each of the last four seasons . The Golden Griffins won the program’s first postseason game in 2008, played in the title game of the 2009 MAAC Tournament and have advanced to the championship round of the MAAC Tournament in each of the last two seasons – the only two appearances in the championship round in program history .

During the past three seasons, the Golden Griffins have won 116 games, making Canisius the winningest program in the Northeast and Midwest, giving them a number of other accolades:

• Most wins by Northeast or Midwest school last three seasons• Only team in Northeast with 35-plus wins each of past three seasons• 29th in country in wins the last three seasons• One of 25 schools in the country with 35-plus wins each of last three seasons• Eighth among schools from non-power conferences in wins last three seasons

Canisius has had five players associated with the program selected in the Major League Baseball Draft during the past three years . In 2010, Steve McQuail (30th Round — Toronto Blue Jays) was the first Canisius junior taken since Joe Mamott in 1994 . Two Griffs were selected in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft — Kevin Mahoney (23rd Round –

New York Yankees) and Kevin Mailloux (45th Round – Seattle Mariners) were taken in the 2009 MLB Draft . Two incoming freshmen were selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft – Benson Merritt (Cincinnati Reds, 42nd round) and Nathan Linseman (Detroit Tigers, 45th round) . Also, John Axford, who played with the Golden Griffins in 2006, took over the closer role for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2010 and went 8-2 with 24 saves last season .

Canisius has had three players named All-Americans during the last three seasons – the only three All-Americans in program history . Steve McQuail was named an All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association in 2010 . Shane Davis and Kevin Mailloux were the first Golden Griffins to be named All-Americans, earning the recognition during the 2008 campaign . Davis received a total of eight All-America

Department of AthleticsWhat is a Griffin?

The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s ill-fated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”
