SSEECCTTIIOONN OONNEE:: GGEENNEERRAALL TTOOUURRNNAAMMEENNTT RRUULLEESS TOURNAMENT FORMAT

Welcome to THE BATTLE FOR SALVATION GRAND TOURNAMENT 2011! Inspired by the success of the NOVA Open, and with the help of Mike Brandt, The Battle for Salvation Warhammer 40,000 Grand Tournament closely emulates this format with a two-day Swiss pairing system and separately awarded achievements in various hobbyist and competitive gaming categories. There is a 2000 points limit and the tournament will consist of seven games. On the competitive gaming side, Win-Loss performance within the tournament structure will be aimed at finding a

single player at the end of the event and crowning him Tournament Champion (and awarding tickets to both the

2012 Games Workshop invitational event and the 2012 NOVA Open Invitational). Prizes will also be bestowed upon

the players who remain undefeated at the end of the first day, and who shall be recognized as the Tournament

Aces. Best General awards will be issued to the players who go undefeated in their respective 8-man brackets on

Sunday. Lastly, the player ranked lowest at the end of Saturday will receive a prize as the Orlando Bloom award.

On the hobbyist side, each player will be judged on the appearance of their army. Furthermore, players will be asked

to designate single models to represent their entries for Best Painted and Best Converted Miniature, the scores of

which will be combined with the army appearance score to create an overall appearance total. Sportsmanship will

be scored by having participants rank their opponents in order of sportsmanship, from highest to lowest, and the

player with the highest score at the end of the first day will be declared the Best Sportsman.

Last, but not least, the player demonstrating proficiency in all aspects of the hobby by receiving the highest

combination of tournament performance, appearance, and sportsmanship scores at the end of Saturday will be

crowned the Renaissance Man and will receive a ticket to the 2012 Games Workshop invitational event

PRIZES CATEGORIES

We have done our best to provide, you the player, with as many opportunities as possible to excel and win prizes. The prize category breakdown is as follows:

DAY 1 - Renaissance Man: Comprised of all 3 Major Categories. (33% General, Paint, and Sport)

DAY 1 - Tournament Aces: The 4 players to finish with a 4-0 win/loss ratio

DAY 1 - Best Army Appearance: Selected from the top 10 armies by our Head Paint Judge

DAY 1 - Best Painted Model: Scored by our painting judges

DAY 1 - Best Converted Model: Scored by our painting judges

DAY 1 – Best Sportsman: The player with the most sportsmanship points

DAY 1 - Orlando Bloom Award: Lowest ranked player of the day

DAY 2 - Tournament Champion: Winner of Gold bracket wins The Battle for Salvation GT

DAY 2 - Bracket Generals: Each individual bracket winner

There will be FOUR games on Saturday and THREE games on Sunday. All players will compete on both days. Based on your performance on Day 1 we will divide players into 8-man elimination brackets. The Gold bracket contains the top 8 players from Saturday and will be contending for the Tournament Champion title. Meanwhile, the following brackets will be competing for the Bracket General prizes.

PRIZES CATEGORIES (continued)

Because the brackets are elimination style, once you lose on Day 2, you are out. Therefore each participant will be guaranteed at least 5 games during the Grand Tournament.

After the first elimination round on Sunday, all eliminated tournament participants will automatically be entered into a 500-point Mini-Tournament which will be run by Fritz of Fritz40k, with additional prizes to be won for the top finishers.

All throughout Saturday we will be giving out our door prizes. For every loss on Day 1 you will have a raffle ticket placed in our random drawings. There will be four drawings throughout the day. Once you win you will not be able to win another door prize, but each prize is substantial.

PAINTING AND MODELING

All models must be painted (three color minimum) and WYSIWYG. The BFS GT Painting Rubric (separate document) will be used by judges to determine appearance scores.

SPORTSMANSHIP

Sportsmanlike conduct needs no explanation. You should treat all of your peers with equal respect, especially in an environment where tensions can rise. We all need to remember that this game is intended to be fun. Unsportsmanlike conduct will be severely penalized, and can include disqualification from the event. At the end of each day all participants will be asked to rank their players with respect to how sportsmanly their conduct was during each game. These rankings will translate into scores. For instance, if the tournament consists of four games and you rank Bob first and Tim last then Bob will get 4 sportsmanship points and Tim will get 1 sportsmanship point. We recognize that you may want to give multiple players top marks for sportsmanship, however this ranking system provides a wider spread of scores that allows for the recognition of truly outstanding sportsmen.

QUITTING

Quitting is a difficult issue to deal with from an organizers stand point. If you quit the tournament you will not be invited back to further Battle for Salvation events. In the case of an emergency, if you must leave the tournament early, please notify the Tournament Organizers as soon as possible so that we may find a replacement in time.

JUDGES, FAQs, & RULES DISPUTES

Judges will be walking around the games wearing RED staff shirts. General Staff will be wearing BLACK shirts.

All decisions by rules judges are final. You must respect the decision given by officials.

The Battle for Salvation FAQ, a slight variation of the NOVA FAQ, will be provided for use in this tournament. This FAQ is to be used in tandem with those produced by Games Workshop.

If there is a dispute not covered by the tournament FAQ's, and neither can agree on a ruling, you may bring over a rules judge to decide on the issue. The rules judges will do their best to interpret the rules as written. When calling a judge over you should have looked up all passages in the rulebooks to assist in the judges decisions.

All similar concerns will be ruled the same way throughout the day unless someone can bring up new evidence as to why the ruling should be overturned. We don't mind being wrong if we can find the correct answer.

SSEECCTTIIOONN TTWWOO:: RROOUUNNDD RRUULLEESS TERRAIN

All terrain has been preset to give a fair balance to each table. Please do not move or adjust any terrain pieces.

OBJECTIVES

All objectives are in fixed locations.

When measuring distance to objectives, do not take height into account. Only measure horizontal distances

HOW TO WIN (Primary, Secondary, & Tertiary Goals)

The entire tournament contains three Goals. All three of these Goals are in play in every round.

For each round, one Goal will be designated Primary, one Secondary, and one Tertiary in terms of importance.

The Primary Goal for a round is the Win Condition. If you secure this Goal, you win the round.

The Secondary Goal for a mission is the 1st Tiebreaker.

The Tertiary Goal for a mission is the 2nd Tiebreaker.

If another tie breaker is required, Victory Points represent the fourth and final tiebreaker in every round. This means that if all 3 Goals are tied you can win by having just 0.5 more victory points than your opponent.

SCORING AND ROUND SEEDING

After each round we will update your ranking. You will be ranked by the following method:

(Win Rate) + (% of Goal 1 Achieved) + (% of Goal 2 Achieved) + (% of Goal 3 Achieved)

You will be seeded randomly in round 1. There can only be results of a win or a loss. In rounds 2, 3, and 4, you will be paired against only those with your same win/loss record. The top seed will play the lowest seed in their respective win/loss category (this increases the likelihood that the top seeds will face each other in the finals rather than knocking out one another earlier in the tournament).

GAME LENGTH

All games go at least 5 turns and follow the random game length as per the Warhammer 40K Rulebook.

At the 2 hours and 15 minute mark the last turn will be called. You may begin a new round any time before this mark is called. Once the last turn is called, you finish the current game round (meaning the top and bottom of the rounds). If you begin a new game turn after time is called, keep in mind that both participants may not get the chance to complete their player turn.

We will announce time periodically. All players should keep track of time to avoid any issues

SCORE SHEETS

At the end of the game, record your score for EACH Goal and fill out the score sheet in this packet for the appropriate round.

If you do not record your score for any of the goals you will be credited as scoring a “0” for it and this will negatively influence your player ranking. Even if you won, you must score how you did in every Goal, as it will affect who you are seeded against in the next round.

SSEECCTTIIOONN TTHHRREEEE:: GGOOAALL DDEESSCCRRIIPPTTIIOONNSS GOAL #1: ANNIHILATION

Kill Points (KP) are awarded to a player when he completely destroys an entire enemy unit, or if at the end of the game the unit is falling back.

Units that can split during the course of the game, such as Combat Squads for Space Marines, count as separate units for purposes of KPs.

Vehicle Squadrons count as 1 KP. Therefore you must destroy all the vehicles in that squadron or you are not rewarded a KP.

The player that has earned 3 or more KPs than their opponent wins this Goal. If fewer than 3 KPs (0-2) have been earned, this goal is tied.

GOAL #2: TABLE QUARTERS

The purpose of this mission is to capture Table Quarters. A quarter is captured when more of your victory points are in it than your opponent’s at the end of the game.

Units count for VP in the same way as Goal #1—damaged vehicles or units below half strength are only worth 50% of their VP. This rule does not apply to Scoring units for purposes of capturing table quarters only. This means Scoring units will always count as full points until they are completely destroyed or falling back.

If a unit is partially in multiple quarters, it is considered in whichever quarter contains the majority of the unit; if no quarter contains a majority, randomly determine which quarter it is in.

The opponent controlling the largest number of table quarters at the end of the game wins this goal; if each opponent controls the same number of table quarters, this goal is tied.

GOAL #3: SEIZE GROUND

Objective tokens are the goal for this mission. Objectives will be placed 18” from the closest short edge, and 12” from the closest long edge (4 objectives, each “centered” in one of the board’s quarters).

Place a 5th objective in the exact center of the board.

In order to hold an objective, a scoring unit must be within 3” of its edge. If an enemy unit is also within 3” of its edge, an objective is contested, and neither side controls it.

When determining if an objective is held or contested, ignore all terrain/model heights.

The opponent holding the most objectives at the end of the game wins this goal; if an equal number of objectives are held, this goal is tied.
