Presidents Awards for Teaching Excellence, 2010-11
Nomination Procedure
1. All academic staff at NUI Galway are eligible to be nominated and considered for a
Teaching Excellence Award, either as individuals or teams of staff. Nominations can be putforward by any two, or more, members of the University (staff, students or alumni).
2. There are two routes to being considered for a Teaching Excellence Award:
(a) nominations may be self-initiated, using a standard nomination form, where the
nomination is seconded by a colleague; or
(b) two (or more) staff, students or alumni may nominate an appropriate candidate (individual
or team), again using a standard form.
A copy of the form is appended to this document.
Nominations should include a short statement (no more than two sides of A4) giving a critical
assessment of the work for which the candidate is being nominated, against the relevantcriteria described below (3).
3. "Teaching Excellence" is a fairly broad concept. For the purposes of this award scheme it
may include, for example:
y A reflective approach to teaching and learning;y Inspirational, stimulating and imaginative approaches to teaching;y The use of teaching and learning methods which encourage students to become
independent, critical thinkers fully engaged with the subject matter;
y A high level of awareness of contemporary issues in the teaching of a particulardiscipline and higher education in general;
y Appropriate and effective links between research and teaching or support for learning;y Effective and innovative design and delivery of courses;y Experience of the use of diverse but appropriate assessment methods;y Enthusiasm for, and commitment to, collegiality by influencing, stimulating and
encouraging best practice amongst colleagues;
y Empathy and support for a diverse range of students;4. For the purposes of this award scheme a team is made up of two to ten individuals whohave worked together to achieve a common goal. The team members should work
collaboratively to achieve a common goal that supports student learning, or engage in orimplement a special project or initiative that supports studentlearning.
5.Nominations should be submitted to bernadette.henchy nuigalway.ie at the Centre for
Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT)before Friday, March 4th

6. Ift Teachi Awards Panel decides that a case exists, then the nominee and/or proposerwill be invited to suppl supporting materials and a concise Supporting Case Document. This
is a concise statement (of no more than five sides of A4) whichjustifies the nomination andexplains the supporting evidence which underpins the submission.
The Supporting Case Document should make the case for excellence in three ways.
y It allows the Panelto get a sense ofthe contextin which teaching takes place.y It offers an opportunity to describe the broad approach to teaching and the qualities
thatthe nominee brings to the role.
y Itis a means ofjustifying the claim by referring to the supporting evidence andexplaining its significance.
The deadline forthe submission ofthe Supporting Case Document and associated materials
will be communicated to nominees.
7. The materials required to supportthe case (i.e. atthe second stage) should provide some
reasonable means of demonstrating teaching excellence (as described above). Examples of
appropriate materials are:
y A Teaching Portfolio, similarto that described in the CELT Portfolios Project(www.nuigalway.ie/celt/documents/teachingportfolio.pdf).
y A selection of example teaching materials such as1. course and lecture notes;2. handbooks, guides and supporting materials;3. video, audio, slides or computer based learning resources;4. examples oftypes of assessments used in courses and analysis of results.
Where requested, CELT will make access to specified Blackboard courses available
to the Teaching Awards Panel.
yStudent feedback with some discussion, reflection and, where appropriate, an outlineof actions taken in response.
This is not meantto be a comprehensive or prescriptive listing, butthe selection should
provide sufficient evidence forthe case to enable the Teaching Awards Panelto make a
reasonablejudgement.
Nominees are advised notto rely on material submitted on cd/dvd or online materials.
Although of course these can be provided as ancillary supporting materials the main case
document should not be in these formats.
8. A standard student feedback questionnaire, solely forthe purposes ofthe Presidents
Awards for Teaching Excellence, is required to supportthe assessment of nominations by theTeaching Awards Panel. CELT will administerthe questionnaire. More information on this
process will be communicated to nominees. This is simply to support comparability and
ensure thatthe student voice is represented in the case.
9. The initial nomination forms will be available from the CELT website.
10. CELT will offer support/advice for proposers/nominees at both the initial and second
stages ofthe process.
