RENEWING HOPE. When we look at the challenges facing the world, it can be overwhelming — climate disruption is increasing, more communities are vulnerable, and governments can be slow to take action on pressing issues. It’s no wonder some people feel that there is not enough happening.

At ISC we know that breakthroughs are happening all around the world. In Kosovo and Serbia, formerly war-torn regions are building a culture of proactive citizen engagement. In industrial China, factory workers are taking the lead on environmental health and safety. In the U.S.’ largest cities, sustainability officers are building the skills they need to address climate change head-on.

We believe that, with the right tools, people can find their own local solutions for the challenges they face. We work to show what’s possible.

2011: ISC At Work Around The World

CHINA: Our work is China is focused on helping people at the local level reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We’re working in several regions and on multiple fronts to help some of China’s biggest emitters – the industrial and energy production sectors – find effective ways to cut back on carbon (and other damaging GHGs). From the Environment, Health and Safety Academies, which have trained over 5,000 industrial managers and government officials, to our work helping identify waste heat recovery opportunities and building retrofit partners, we are working on the ground to help the Chinese slow emissions and access new practices.

UNITED STATES: The Sustainable Communities Leadership Academies, designed to give government officials and community leaders in-depth training and peer-learning from leading practitioners, continue to increase their reach and impact. Covering topics such as Climate Adaptation and Resilience, Low-Carbon Transportation, and Building Energy Retrofits, the workshops are focused, intense, and very effective. Participants from over 300 communities have rated the workshops very highly on content, presentation, and networking opportunities, and ISC is supporting regional networks in tackling local challenges such as drought in western states or sea level rise in the American southeast.

SERBIA: The Advocacy Fellows program, part of our Serbia Civil Society Advocacy Initiative, is designed to connect advocates in Serbia with peers and leaders in the U.S to share promising practices on key issues. In the fall of 2011, the Advocacy Fellows, part of the CSAI Green Initiative, traveled to Vermont and Washington DC for intensive advocacy training and education around recycling and waste reduction. The fellows were able to tour several solid waste districts and the High Fields Center for Composting, meet with a number of advocates focused on waste reduction in New England, and hear from a number of ISC staff and former staffers about successful programs. From this intensive tour, they returned to Serbia with new ideas, new skills and new energy for helping Serbia reduce its waste stream.

Kosovo Civil Society Strengthening Project, 2008-2011

IN 2008, we began working with civil society organizations in Kosovo to help ease the young country’s transition to an inclusive and democratic government. ISC trained ordinary citizens and nonprofit organizations to successfully influence public policy, hold government accountable, and make their communities better places to live. With our partners, we worked to ensure that Kosovo has the legal and regulatory framework to support the civil sector‘s ongoing work.

OVER THE THREE YEARS of the USAID-funded program, we’ve helped a wide range of organizations build their strength and capacity to advocate for those whose voices are unheard in government. Ultimately we’ve worked to ensure that civil society organizations can both serve and advocate on behalf of their constituents, and that all citizens—Albanians, Serbs, and other minorities—have a voice in helping to shape Europe’s youngest country.

There are now over 7,000 non-profit organizations in Kosovo, and the sector is becoming a strong and effective link between the citizens and their government.

SOME EXAMPLES: The Kosovo Advocacy and Development Center helped push enforcement of the public anti-smoking ban; though the law exists, it wasn’t enforced.

The HandiKOS movement helped drive key changes to laws on labor, education and personal assistance that allowed handicapped individuals greater access and autonomy.

And ECO Movement is engaging citizens at the local level to promote actions to improve Kosovo’s environment, increase awareness of climate change and environmental threats, and engage youth in meaningful action. Through celebrations of international events such as Earth Day, ECO Movement is connecting Kosovo’s citizens to the global movement.
