JAMES REID A national champion and national coach of the year, James Reid enters his 12th season as the head men’s and women’s track coach at Angelo State University where he oversees the shot put, discus, hammer throw, pole vault, long hurdles, as well as the 4x400 relays and assists in the mutli-events. He was selected as head coach in 1999 after six seasons as an assistant coach. The native of Sweeny, Texas, also assisted long-time ASU track coach David Noble as a graduate assistant for two years and a volunteer assistant for four years prior to being named a full-time assistant. Last season, Reid led the Angelo State women’s outdoor track and fi eld team to its fi rst-ever National Championship and guided the Rams to their 26th top-10 National Team fi nish. Reid was named National and Regional Women’s Track and Field Coach of the Year after leading the Belles to their spectacular run and championship fi nish. On top of leading his Belles squad to a National Championship, Reid also coached the 2011 National and Regional Field Athlete of the Year, Aisha Adams, as well as Celethia Byrd who was named the Regional Track Athlete of the Year. Reid was also instrumental in coaching two individual National Champions in Aisha Adams in the heptathlon and Celethia Byrd in the 400m, as well as 4x400 National Champion relay team which consisted of Chrystal Ruiz, Andria Nussey, Kris Crockett and Celethia Byrd. He coached the Belles to 12 Independent All-American Certifi cates as well as a pair of All-American Relays and led the Rams to four Independent All-American Certifi cates and two All-American Relays. Reid’s Belles repeated as Lone Star Conference Champions, while the Rams were the Runner-up team in the LSC. He coached the Belles to 10 Independent Conference Championships and one Relay victory, while guiding the Rams to a pair of Independent Conference Championships and two Relay wins. In 2010, Reid’s tutelage paid off as Aisha Adams was named the Women’s Conference All-Sport Athlete of the Year. Reid also had the honor of coaching four of his Belles in Aisha Adams, Chrystal Ruiz, Andria Nussey and Celethia Byrd, as well as James Howell, to the USA National Championships. He coached Adams all the way to Germany where she helped the USA Team place second in the Thorpe Cup.In his fi rst 10 seasons as head coach, Reid has led the Rams track team to fi ve top 10 overall fi nishes at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships, including a fi fth-place effort in 2001. He has been equally successful with the Rambelles, guiding them to a school-best second-place last spring, their fourth top 10 fi nish in six seasons. Along the way, he has also coached 10 national champions, including three-time champion throwers Curry Dawson and Adree Lakey, two-time champion high jumper Will Littleton, decathletes Lee McCown and Mike Bohensky, heptathletes Amy Bippert and Aisha Adams, jumper LaTasha Mosley, javelin thrower Amber Miller and long jumper LaTisha Burns. As fi rst an assistant and then head coach of the Rams, Reid has also tutored numerous NCAA D-II All-Americans, including John Nelson (1993) and J.J. Miller (1997), both national runners-up in the pole vault.

Miller still holds the ASU pole vault record with a best of 18’ 1/2”. In 2003, two more Rams vaulters, Andy Kendrick and Jeff Ingram, earned All-America honors. Some of Reid’s other notable protégés include four-time All-American high jumper Nathan Gibson, three-time All-American long jumper Darrin Session and All-American Noah Dean, the 2001 national runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles. Rambelle athletes have also benefi tted from Reid’s tutelage. Some of his other top women performers include three-time All-Americans Kathy Crowe (discus), Shavon Jackson (long jump, 100m) and Celethia Byrd (100m, 200m, 4x400m relay), two-time All-American Abbie Baiza (400mH), and All-American jumpers Shauna LeGrand (high jump), Tamara Flippin (triple jump), Stacie Cole (long jump, 4x400 relay) and Andria Nussey (long jump). He also coached Amanda Welch to an appearance in the fi rst-ever women’s pole vault competition at the NCAA D-II Championships. One of the highlights of Reid’s coaching career came in 2004, when he led the Rambelles to their fi rst-ever Lone Star Conference championship, snapping the NCAA-record streak of 19 consecutive titles by rival Abilene Christian. efforts, Reid was honored by his coaching peers as the LSC and NCAA D-II South Central Region Women’s Track Coach of the Year. Another high point for Reid came in 2003, when he coached Amber Miller and LaTasha Mosley to appearances at the U.S.A. National Track and Field Championships. They were just the second and third women in school history to ever qualify for the U.S.A. meet, with Miller fi nishing in the top 10 in the javelin and Mosley fi nishing in the top 20 in the triple jump. The dynamic duo capped off their storybook ASU careers with a host of awards, including NCAA D-II South Central Region Female Athlete of the Year honors for Miller and LSC Female Track Athlete and Female Athlete of the Year honors for Mosley.

In 2005, Reid again garnered LSC Women’s Track Coach of the Year honors as the Rambelles defended their LSC title in San Angelo. Alissa Miller swept fi ve individual events to win the LSC’s David Noble Field Athlete of the Year Award. She also became only the second ‘Belle to be named the NCAA D-II South Central Region Female Athlete of the Year. That year also brought another proud moment for Reid when former ASU national champion Amy Bippert-Bohensky was inducted into the NCAA D-II Track

and Field Hall of Fame. In 2008, Reid coached another NCAA D-II South Central Region Female Athlete of

the Year in Adree Lakey. Lakey claimed LSC titles in three events and went on to collect three more All-America certifi cates as well as a national championship in the discus throw. That marked the second straight season that she earned a throwing national title after winning the 2007 NCAA D-II championship in the hammer throw. Following the 2008 season, Reid was once again named the LSC Women’s Track Coach of the Year. In a career full of highlights, last spring may have been the most successful for Reid. Angelo State hosted the NCAA D-II National Outdoor Championships for the fi fth time, and the Rams and Rambelles posted 22 All-America performances and two more

national championships. Reid mentored Aisha Adams to the second heptathlon national championship in program history while coaching thrower Adree Lakey to a third career national title, this time in the shot put. He was recognized by his peers as the NCAA D-II National Women’s Track & Field Coach of the Year for 2009. There would also be a host of honors for two of Reid’s prize pupils. Adams was named the NCAA D-II National Female Field Athlete of the Year and qualifi ed for the U.S.A. National Track and Field Championships. With her eighth-place fi nish at the U.S.A. meet, Adams was chosen to represent the U.S.A. at the Thorpe Cup in Marburg, Germany. Lakey fi nished her career as the most decorated Rambelle in program history with three national titles and 11 All-America certifi cates. She was also a fi nalist for the prestigious 2009 Honda Award, given to the top female student-athlete in NCAA D-II. Ironically, despite coming from an impressive track family, Reid did not start out to become a track coach or even a track athlete. He began his tenure at Angelo State in 1986 as a member of the Rams football team, but his promising career as an offensive lineman was cut short by an illness in his freshman season. Noble invited him to help with the track team and he has been on the track ever since. Reid’s father, Doug, was the head track coach at Sweeny High School, where he led the Bulldogs to a state championship in 1992 and runner-up fi nishes in 1993 and 2001, before retiring from coaching. His older brother, Will, coaches in Harper after coaching at Kerrville’s Tivy High School and Water Valley High School. Reid received his undergraduate degree from ASU in 1991 and his master’s degree in education in 1993. In addition to his duties as head track coach, Reid is ASU’s assistant athletic director and head coach of the cross country teams. He and his wife, Nina, have three children, Jacob, Kyla and J.D.

TOM DIBBERN Former Ram jumper Tom Dibbern enters his seventh season as the assistant track and fi eld coach and fi rst year as the head cross country coach at Angelo State University. He is the primary coach for the Rams and Rambelles long jumpers, triple jumpers and high jumpers. He also coaches the javelin throwers, short sprinters, short hurdlers, and multi-event athletes. Last summer, Dibbern was named head coach of the ASU cross country team after being named National and Regional Assistant Coach of the Year. He was an integral part of the 2010 Angelo State outdoor women’s track and fi eld team which won its fi rst ever National Championship. In 2010, he coached Regional and National Field Athlete of the Year Aisha Adams as well as Regional Track Athlete of the Year Celethia Byrd. Dibbern’s tutelage was key in helping Adams win the Individual National Championship in the heptathlon. Last year alone, he coached the Belles to seven Independent All-American Certifi cations in their particular events, as well as a Sprint Relay All-America honor. Dibbern guided a pair of Rams and a Sprint Relay team to All-American status, while leading four Belles to independent Lone Star Conference Championships. He also was instrumental in coaching the Rams to an independent Conference Championship as well as a Sprint Relay victory. Adding to his already impressive resume, Dibbern coached Aisha Adams, Chrystal Ruiz and Andria Nussey to the USA Championships, and Adams to her second Thorpe Cup appearance. In his fi rst year at the helm of the cross country program, Dibbern’s Belles were the Lone Star Conference Runner-up at the LSC Championship and fi nished in eighth place at the regional meet. With strong showings all year, Emeline Crutcher was named All-Lone Star Conference under Dibbern’s guidance. In 2009, Dibbern was honored by the coaching fraternity as the NCAA Division II National Women’s Track and Field Assistant Coach of the Year. He mentored three Rams to All-America honors in 2009, hurdler and decathlete Ryan McWilliams, javelin thrower Tyler Orlando and decathlete Chase Moore. It marked the second time in four years that the Rams have had multiple All-Americans in the decathlon. Dibbern also had four Rambelles earn All-America honors in 2009, Aisha Adams in the heptathlon and long jump, Culley Jo Dawson and Adree Lakey in the javelin and Andria Nussey in the long jump. His mentoring had four heptathletes earn automatic marks for the NCAA Division II Championships. Dibbern also guided Adams in the heptathlon at the Thorpe Cup in Germany where she fi nished as the second-highest American. Despite his relatively short time on the ASU coaching staff, Dibbern has already tutored 17 All-America athletes, one All-America sprint relay squad and 18 Lone Star Conference champions. His LSC champs include Will Littleton in the high jump and both Alissa Miller and Aisha Adams, who claimed the long, triple and high jump titles. Dibbern holds an instructor training certifi cate and a Level II coaching certifi cate in the jumps, throws, multi-events, sprints and hurdles from USA Track and Field. Before arriving at ASU, Dibbern spent one season as the assistant men’s and women’s track coach at Oklahoma Baptist University, where he coached the multi-event and fi eld event athletes. He helped lead the men’s and women’s squads to third-place fi nishes at the NAIA Indoor Championships and the women’s team to a fi fth-place effort at the NAIA outdoor meet. Under his guidance, four OBU athletes garnered All-America honors, including one NAIA national runner-up, 15 qualifi ed for NAIA national meets, and fi ve new school records were set.

Prior to his time at OBU, Dibbern spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Hastings (Neb.) College, working with the multi-event athletes, jumpers and javelin throwers. At Hastings, he coached three NAIA national champions, three national runners-up and 13 All-Americans. He also helped HC qualify more than 25 athletes to NAIA national meets and helped the team set four new school records. In addition, he helped coach the women’s team to a fi fth-place fi nish at the NAIA Outdoor National Championships in 2002. Dibbern also spent one season as an assistant at Christoval High School, where he coached the long, triple and high jumpers. As an athlete, Dibbern competed for the Rams track and fi eld team from 1997-99 and in 2001. He placed as high as third at the Lone Star Conference Championships in the triple jump and was a two-time NCAA provisional qualifi er. He then competed in the decathlon after returning from injury in 2001. Also a prep star, he was a two-time state qualifi er in the high jump for Albany High School and placed second at the state meet his senior year. Dibbern received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Angelo State in 2001 and his master’s degree in physical education from Hastings College in 2003. In addition to his track and cross country duties, he also serves as an instructor in the ASU Kinesiology Department.

GARY GABRIEL One of the most familiar faces in the ASU Athletic Department, Gary Gabriel enters his 21st year of association with the ASU track and cross country teams as a coach and his fi fth as a full-time assistant coach. He spent the previous 16 seasons as a volunteer coach for both programs. A former distance runner for the Rams, Gabriel has been instrumental in the success of both the Rams and Rambelles cross country programs and track distance corps. In 2006 and 2009, he was honored as part of the Lone Star Conference Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year and he was named LSC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1998. The laundry list of athletes who have thrived under Gabriel’s guidance goes all the way back to Helen O’Sullivan, who garnered cross country All-America honors in 1991-92, and Bobby Lumpkins, who won ASU’s fi rst-ever LSC title in the 10,000-meters in 1993. His track All-Americans include Lane Rutland (3,000-meter steeplechase), Damaris Vaughn (1,500- and 3,000-meters), Cindy Farris (10,000-meters), Karsten Duncan (3,000-meter steeplechase), Trista McIntyre (1,500-meters) and O’Sullivan (10,000-meters). In 2004, helped guide several Rams and ‘Belles to cross country success, including All-LSC honors for Trent Joseph and Dustin Hafernick, and all-region honors for Joseph. Joseph also became the fi rst Ram to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships and was named the LSC Male Academic Runner of the Year for cross country. On the women’s side, Rebecca Graupman won the fi rst of her back-to-back LSC titles in the 10,000-meters and was named Academic All-LSC. A Rambelle runner has won the LSC 10,000-meter title four of the last nine years. The success continued into 2010, as the women’s cross country team fi nished as the LSC runner-up before fi nishing eighth at regionals under Gabriel’s tutelage. He was essential in the development of sophomore Emeline Crutcher, who went on to earn LSC All-Conference Cross Country honors. Under Gabriel’s watchful eye, ASU has had an all-conference selection in both men’s and women’s cross country in six of the last 11 years. Top performances include LSC championships for Dora Davila (1998) and Damaris Vaughan (1999) and LSC Freshman of the Year honors for Lane Rutland (1998). The Rambelles have won three LSC cross country championships, while the Rams have fi nished second twice and posted eight total top fi ve fi nishes. Davila earned All-America honors in 1997, when she led the ‘Belles to a 14th-place

fi nish, and Diego Cordoba represented the Rams at the NCAA national meet in 1994. A native of Rockwall, Texas, Gabriel ran for the Rams from 1981-84. Highlights of his career include a third-place fi nish in the 1,500-meters in 1982, a fi fth-place fi nish at the LSC Cross Country Championships in 1981 and qualifying for NAIA nationals. Gabriel received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from ASU in 1990. He has two sons, Patrick and Zachary, and his family resides in San Angelo.

Chrystal Ruiz is a woman with many descriptive titles including All-American, National Champion, Lone Star Conference Champion and multi-event star. The Lakehills, Texas native will add another this season as she begins her career as a graduate assistant coach for Angelo State after a highly decorated collegiate career. Ruiz will fi nish her eligibility and take part in ASU’s fi rst women’s indoor track and fi eld season, a year after helping the Rambelles to another program fi rst - the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championship. Ruiz was second in the women’s heptathlon at the championship meet, spurring teammate Aisha Adams to the top fi nish and Division II meet record performance. Ruiz was part of ASU’s 4x400-meter relay team that put an exclamation point on the championship meet with a win to close the competition. Ruiz also earned All-America honors as a junior, placing seventh in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championships and was ninth in the heptathlon. Ruiz has been recognized multiple times by the Lone Star Conference as an all-league performer. A record setting athlete at Bandera High School, Ruiz was a three-time district champion and earned all-state honors in track as a senior. She also lettered in basketball and volleyball for the Bulldogs. Ruiz, is the daughter of Hector and Leticia Ruiz.

NCAA DIVISION II WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

2010 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS You can call them the National Champion Nine. The nine members of the ASU Rambelles track and fi eld team that headed to the NCAA Division II National Track and Field Championships in Charlotte, N.C., returned home with the program’s fi rst national championship trophy. By capturing 50 points in their fi nal six events, the Rambelles ran away with the title, beating second place fi nisher and defending champion Lincoln University by 14 points, 87-73. And, it was a total team effort. Senior Aisha “Ice” Adams scored points in all six events she entered, including an individual national championship in the heptathlon. Senior Chrystal Ruiz scored points in multiple events, senior Andria Nussey rebounded from a poor showing in the long jump to set a new school record and place second in the 800-meters, and senior Celethia Byrd won an individual national championship in the 400-meter dash and fi nished third in the 200-meter dash, a result that clinched the title for ASU. “I just said, ‘Thank you Lord,’” Byrd said. “That is all that was running through my mind. I was very happy, and to hear my time was a new personal record, it made me feel good. Most of all, I may not have to run the mile relay. That’s awesome!” Byrd’s points from the 200-meters put the Rambelles ahead by 12 points with only the 4x400-meter (mile) relay left to run. That meant no team could catch them, regardless of what they did in that fi nal race. What they did, though, was put their fi nal stamp on the national meet by winning the relay in a school record 3:38.88 with Byrd on the track running the anchor leg. The result had coaches James Reid, Tom Dibbern and Gary Gabriel yelling, fi st-pumping and high-fi ving in the stands. “That is unbelievable,” Dibbern said. “When it’s going right, it’s going right.” “This is a great feeling,” he added. “It hurt real bad last year when we lost it, but this has totally erased it. Coaching-wise, I’ve never had a feeling like this. It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had coaching. It’s truly worth it.” After confi rming that his team had clinched the title, Reid fi nally calmed down enough to begin the task of texting the great news to just about everyone he knows. “I asked Coach Dibbern about nine times if he was

sure before I called anybody,” Reid said. “I called my wife and told her because they have been following it on the internet. I called my parents and I called Coach (Kathleen) Brasfi eld, Coach (David) Noble and a bunch of people who have had a lot of infl uence on me. It’s still a little surreal right now.” “I just can’t say enough about the girls,” he added. “What helped us was nine young ladies busting their butts for three days straight and coming into this year with a goal and wanting to do it. Even over the last three days when we’ve had not such good things happen, they have been resilient, not lost sight of the goal and came up big time after time. I just can’t say enough about them.” Meanwhile, the Rams were also in a battle to achieve their goal of fi nishing in the top 10 at the national meet. Their day started with junior Tyler Orlando and sophomore Jacob McDonald placing third and seventh in the javelin, gaining eight points for the team and All-America status for themselves. In the discus, junior Wade Goode also garnered All-America status by fi nishing eighth and earning a point for his team. The 4x100-meter relay team of James Howell, Ryan Adkins, Brian Holik and Nick Smith became All-Americans with a sixth-place fi nish that picked up

three points. Howell also set a new school record with a 45.95 in the 400-meters that was good enough for third place and six valuable points. The Rams also capped off their national meet in style with a second-place fi nish in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:06.44, the second-fastest time in school history. That race fi nally let junior Terence Holland showcase his talents as, due to weather delays, he was forced to wait until the fi nal event of the meet to get on the track. “With all that waiting, something good was bound to happen,” Holland said. “I was ready to go last night in the rain, but had to keep the animal in the cage. This was my one shot and I wanted to make it my best one. Second-fastest time in school history, you can’t get mad about that.” The fi nal race also provided another shot at success for freshman Isidro Garcia, who missed qualifying for the individual 400-meters by mere hundredths of a second. Now, he is also an All-American. “That is a great way to fi nish off the year,” he said. “I’m glad that we came out and competed to the best of our ability. I went into the race wanting to run a :46, but skipped right past that and ran a :45.7 and that is a big jump for me. Second place in the nation is really something big.” When the dust had settled, the Rams had also achieved their goal as they fi nished tied for ninth place with 26 points. “I’m proud of our girls,” Garcia said, “and I’m glad they are going to celebrate a national championship. But, top 10 in the nation is also something big for the guys and we are really glad to have gotten that high up.” “I think we are going to get a lot of coverage because we won the championship with the women,” Reid said. “But, I don’t want to take anything away from the men because they had a great meet. There has only been a few times when both men’s and women’s teams have fi nished in the top 10 at a national meet, and that is something we wanted to do coming in.” “For the guys to do it the way they did it by running that great mile relay was incredible,” he added. “They put it together and made it happen. It’s awesome, totally awesome.”

ANGELO STATE TRACK, FIELD AND CROSS COUNTRY ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS Angelo State has a long tradition of excellent track and cross country athletes, who have competed at the NCAA Championships numerous times for the University, earning over 100 All-America certifi cates in track, fi eld and cross country events. ASU track also has a strong tradition of performing at the top levels in the classroom, as evidenced by the number of GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in track, fi eld and cross country events. In fact, one of the top honors accorded to any athlete is the honor of Academic All-American of the Year, awarded to ASU’s own Amy Bippert in 1997.

ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN OF THE YEAR AND NCAA SCHOLARSHIP WINNER Heptathlete Amy Bippert capped off her impressive ASU track career with her selection as the GTE/CoSIDA Spring At-Large Team Academic All-American of the Year in 1997. Bippert, the 1997 NCAA Division II heptathlon champion, was picked for the top scholastic honor available to a college athlete from more than 200 female athletes at the NCAA Division II, III and NAIA levels from across the country in six different sports. Bippert also was named an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winner that same spring. She was selected from applicants from the NCAA Division II and III levels in seven different sports. The scholarship for $5,000 can be applied to graduate studies at any accredited institution of Bippert’s selection. She is the fi rst person in ASU history to earn either honor. Bippert, a kinesiology major with a 3.78 grade point average, was a nine-time All-American in track during her career at ASU, and led the Rambelles to a sixth-place fi nish at the 1997 NCAA Division II National Championships, scoring 19 of ASU’s 37 points.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE Long known as a leader in intercollegiate athletics, the Lone Star Conference (LSC) is an innovative athletics confer-ence that aims to provide a superior competitive experience for member institutions and to allow for comprehensive development of student-athletes through academic services and life skills programming. The LSC continues to build upon its proud history while developing into one of NCAA Division II’s most successful conferences. The league’s mission is to foster student participation and success among member institutions in D-II intercol-legiate athletics as an integral part of each institution’s total educational program. The LSC pursues student-athlete de-velopment with highest regard to the principles of academic excellence, sportsmanship, ethical conduct, resourcefulness, community service, gender equity, and diversity. Founded on April 25, 1931, the LSC has grown from a fi ve-team conference of Texas-based schools to a 16-member league that spans three states (Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico). The league continues to assist its member institutions in the maintenance of intercollegiate athletic programs that are compatible with the highest standards of education and competitive sports.

Throughout the league’s history, various institutions have competed under the LSC banner. Today, only Texas A&M University-Commerce (then East Texas State) remains from the original group that was formed in 1931 when North Texas State, Southwest Texas State, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin withdrew from the old Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The membership alignment has changed over the years, with current members having been added in each of the past fi ve decades. Texas A&M-Kingsville (formerly Texas A&I) joined in 1954, followed by Angelo State in 1968 and Abilene Christian in 1973. Conference membership remained within the Texas borders until 1984 when Eastern New Mexico was admitted. Since then, the LSC has grown to include members from Arkansas and Oklahoma.. The LSC conducts conference championships in 16 sports (eight men and eight women). Men’s championships include football, soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, track and fi eld, tennis and golf. Women’s titles are determined in volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, softball, track and fi eld, tennis and golf.

The conference offi ce is located in Richardson, Texas, a northern suburb of Dallas. Stan Wagnon serves as Com-missioner, with assistance from Jay Poerner (Compliance) and Melanie Robotham (Media Relations).

2010 LSC CHAMPIONSHIP The Angelo State women’s team claimed its second straight and fourth conference title in seven years, while Abilene Christian captured its 17th consecutive men’s championship at the 2010 Lone Star Confer-ence Track & Field Championships, held at LeGrand Sports Complex in San Angelo. The Rambelles ended the meet with 297 points, the second-most points in the his-tory of the LSC women’s meet. Aisha Adams won four events for ASU. ACU fi nished in second with 204 points. On the men’s side, the Wildcats won with 205 points to 195 for the runner-up ASU. It was the closest fi nal standings since ACU’s streak began in 1993. Distance runner Amos Sang, who won four events, sparked the Wildcats by leading a 1-2 ACU fi nish in the 5,000 meters to break a 185-185 tie in team scoring before the fi nal event.

ANGELO STATE UNIVERSITY

Named to the prestigious Princeton Review’s

“Best 373 Colleges” nationally for 2010-11, Angelo State

University has long been recognized as one of the premier

regional public universities in the nation.

From 1990 when ASU was identifi ed by U.S. News

and World Report as one of the nation’s Top 10 up-and-

coming regional universities to this year’s recognition

by Princeton Review, ASU has been known for offering

quality academic programs, for embracing diversity and for

fostering a great campus environment.

In addition to the Princeton Review recognition in

2010, ASU was also named by G.I. Jobs magazine as a

“Military Friendly” campus.

As the second largest campus in the Texas Tech

University System, ASU has long been recognized for its

quality academics, which lead to one associate degree,

45 undergraduate degrees, 27 master’s degrees and a

doctorate in physical therapy. Additionally, ASU is noted

for its vibrant Honors Program and its International Studies

programs, which have been a part of campus life since

1948.

Historically, Angelo State has maintained one of

the highest acceptance rates among all state universities

in Texas for admission to law, medical and professional

schools. ASU’s Joint Admission Medical Program,

established by state mandate to help qualifi ed but

economically disadvantaged students pursue a medical

education, has become a model program that is drawing

attention and imitators statewide.

The ASU Physics Department has been identifi ed

by Physics Today as one of the top 21 undergraduate

programs in the nation while the Computer Science

Department’s computer game development sequence has

been named one of the “Top 50 Undergraduate Game

Design Programs” in the U.S. by the Princeton Review.

Additionally, ASU’s chapter of the Beta Beta Beta Biology

National Honor Society is the only six-time winner of the

Lloyd M. Bertholf Award as the top chapter in the nation.

Traditionally attracting a more cosmopolitan student

body than the typical regional university, ASU enrolls

students from some 220 of Texas’ 254 counties, 39 states

and 20 countries. The 2007 affi liation with the Texas Tech

University System has opened opportunities to attract an

even greater diversity of students to campus.

Angelo State has a proud history of encouraging

diversity. In 1953, the institution admitted its fi rst black

students well before the integration of most other colleges

in Texas and the South. The Rams football team broke

the color barrier that same year in Texas intercollegiate

football. Today, African-American enrollment accounts for

11.3 percent of the student body and Hispanic enrollment

for a quarter of the student population.

Beyond that, ASU prides itself in the fact that more

than half of each graduating class annually is made up of

fi rst-generation college students.

Whatever their backgrounds, students attend ASU

for a variety of reasons, including the quality educational

experience, the reasonable cost, the modern campus, the

winning athletic programs, and the exceptional community

of 100,000 West Texans who call San Angelo home.

Another signifi cant attraction to ASU is the Carr

Academic Scholarship Program with its $83 million

endowment that in 2009-10 provided $3,792,781 in

Carr Scholarships to ASU students. Since the 1981-82

academic year when the fi rst Carr Scholarships were

awarded, Angelo State students have earned Carr

Scholarships totaling more than $56.3 million.

All students attend classes on a beautifully

landscaped, 268-acre, $345 million campus dotted with

native pecan and oak trees as well as some 80 palm trees

scattered along the University Mall and among the various

it’s possible.academic, recreational and residential buildings, which

provide some of the most modern and functional collegiate

facilities anywhere.

New or recently renovated facilities include

Centennial Village, Science III, Houston Harte University

Center, Porter Henderson Library, Math-Computer Science

Building, Carr Education-Fine Arts Building, Center for

Human Performance, Food Service Center and Texan Hall,

an award-winning residential complex.

The ASU athletic programs are housed in the Junell

Center/Stephens Arena, one of the premier basketball and

volleyball venues in all of NCAA Division II. The Rams and

Rambelles compete in the Lone Star Conference. Over

the last decade, ASU teams have brought home multiple

conference championships as well as the 2010 NCAA D-II

National Championship in women’s track and fi eld and the

2004 NCAA D-II National Championship in softball. Rams

and Rambelles athletes have earned multiple individual

national championships in track and fi eld. Affi liation with

Texas Tech has garnered ASU athletic teams added

exposure when their scores are announced at Texas Tech

during Big XII Conference events.

The San Angelo community supports ASU in a

variety of ways, including attending Rams and Rambelles

sporting events and participating in a variety of university

cultural events. The community also offers many

complementary activities of its own, including the San

Angelo Symphony, a strong community theater, a thriving

rodeo, a professional baseball team and recreational

opportunities on local lakes, at San Angelo State Park,

along the River Walk in the historic downtown district and

at fi ve public and private golf courses.

In all, Angelo State and San Angelo combine to

provide the perfect environment for a broad-based college

education in a safe, supportive community with a myriad of

opportunities for a great experience both in and out of the

classroom.

One of the most recognizable buildings on the Angelo State University campus, the Junell Center is home to ASU Athletics and Stephens Arena, one of the fi nest venues in NCAA Division II. The Junell Center/Stephens Arena provides a fi rst-class setting for educational, cultural, social and athletic events. Accommodating audiences up to 6,500, the Stephens Arena is the site for ASU commencement and a variety of entertainment activities for the entire community. As home to ASU’s athletic staffs, the Junell Center offers modern offi ces, conference rooms and classrooms designed to serve multiple uses. Fans watch the Rams and ’Belles basketball and Rambelles volleyball squads on a gleaming wood court that also serves as a UIL playoff site for area public schools. The fans can catch replays of all the action on the 9x12-foot video screen – the largest of its kind in the Lone Star Conference. Adjacent to the arena fl oor are the dressing rooms for the Rambelles and Rams athletic teams. These facilities are augmented by a sports medicine center, equipment rooms, storage facilities and a laundry room. Two weight rooms with panoramic windows overlook the LeGrand Sports Complex. A specially-appointed VIP Room is housed in the Junell Center, overlooking the Stephens Arena fl oor. The VIP Room is the site for ASU Athletic Foundation luncheons as well as dinners, receptions and other programs requiring an extra touch of class. ASU’s Athletic Hall of Honor on the Junell Center’s east concourse heralds the accomplishments of ASU athletes through the ages. Taken together, the many amenities make the Junell Center/Stephens Arena one of the premier facilities in the state and a crowning jewel for the campus and the community. Distinguished lecture series, cultural programs, exhibitions and concerts are just a few of the community activities that are staged in the facility. An auxiliary gym is also available for smaller programs or as additional space for larger programs requiring its use in conjunction with the arena fl oor. This space also doubles as a practice site for the Rambelles and Rams and may also be used for classes and dinners. Other support spaces in the building include a warming kitchen for catering needs for banquets and other dining events and a “green room” for performers waiting to go on stage. The Junell Center was funded by the Texas State Legislature with a $30 million dollar package for its construction and for renovation of the existing Houston Harte University Center. The university’s Board of Regents approved the plans for the new center at a cost of $20 million. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held in the summer of 1999, and construction was completed in December of 2001. The fi rst athletic contest to be held in the facility was on Jan. 17, 2002, as the Rams and Rambelles hosted Texas A&M University-Kingsville in a basketball doubleheader. The center is on university-owned property on Varsity Drive, just off of Jackson Street and north of the LeGrand Sports Complex.

The LeGrand Sports Complex is just one of many top-

notch athletic facilities on the ASU campus. Recently, the

facilty was the site for the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor

Track and Field Championships.

The Complex has been the host of numerous track

and fi eld events, including the NCAA Division II National

Championships in 1988, 1991, 1992 and 2002. The

Complex was also the site of the 2005 Lone Star

Conference Championship meet and will serve again as

the site this spring.

The Complex features a 400-meter all-weather track

with 200-meter straightaway, throwing areas, full press

box facilities and seating for 3,000 people.

In 1994, additional throwing areas were added

across Jackson Street from the complex to provide a

safer environment for competition in both the hammer

and 35-pound weight. The Junell Center/Stephens Arena

is located at the top of the left curve of the track, with

weight-lifting areas overlooking the track.

The Complex is also lighted for evening and night

competition. A fully automatic Finish Lynx timing system

and scoreboard are also at the Complex site, in addition

to complete locker room and training facilities.

In 2009, a new scoreboard was erected at the

Complex. This new scoreboard is pictured at the right.

Angelo State student-athletes train in the more than 7,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art Junell Center weight room, which is conveniently located next to the LeGrand Sports Complex. Training takes place under the supervision of Kelsey Hite, a former ASU student-athlete who knows what it takes to compete with the best in the Lone Star Conference. The two primary goals for all athletes participating in strength and conditioning programs at Angelo State University are to improve performance and reduce the opportunity for injury. To accomplish those goals we adhere

to the following guidelines:

1. Emphasize Olympic-style exercises each workout

2. Develop Strength using traditional methods of training

such as bench, squat, deadlift, military, etc.

3. Develop as much power and speed capability as

possible

4. Develop as much athleticism as possible

5. Dumbbell and implement training is a priority due to

improved balance and stability

6. Free weight training is an area of emphasis

7. Training movements rather than muscle groups is a

focus, strength in all planes of motion not just forward

8. Training the core is a priority

9. The education of all athletes on proper diet, rest, and

exercise patterns is paramount

We expect our athletes to train with great intensity, follow the training program provided to them, and to know at all times they have outworked and are better prepared than their opponents. The weight room is a place where athletes feel a great sense of accomplishment and belonging. We at Angelo State also attempt to promote a positive environment in the weight room during training sessions, and encourage our athletes to have a positive attitude when training. We try to improve adherence to the program by evaluating the progress of the players accurately, and providing quantitative feedback to show how we as a team have progressed. Also we attempt to educate the athletes on why the workout it structured as it is and how certain exercises or exercise principles will eventually improve athletic performance.

ATHLETIC TRAINING At Angelo State, the athletic training staff focuses

on helping student-athletes reach and maintain their

best health, achieve conditioning goals, understand

best practices to prevent serious injury and recover fully

in a timely manner. Because of this, Angelo State has

developed excellent training and conditioning programs

to help prevent injuries and insure safe practice and

competition habits. However, if injuries do occur, the

department is prepared to implement a comprehensive

rehabilitation program.

At Angelo State, the Certifi ed Athletic Trainers are

highly educated and skilled professionals specializing in

athletic health care. In cooperation with physicians and

other allied health personnel, the athletic trainers function

as integral members of the athletic health care team.

ASU’s team consists of three Certifi ed Athletic Trainers,

two graduate assistant athletic trainers and a talented

student staff of 30-40 student athletic trainers.

Certifi ed athletic trainers have, at minimum, a

bachelor’s degree, usually in athletic training, health,

physical education or exercise science. In addition,

athletic trainers study human anatomy, human physiology,

biomechanics, exercise physiology, athletic training,

nutrition and psychology/counseling. Certifi ed athletic

trainers also participate in extensive clinical affi liations with

athletic teams under appropriate supervision.

In addition, Certifi ed Athletic Trainers are required

to obtain 75 hours worth of Continuing Education Units

(CEUs) within a three year period to remain in good

standing. These CEUs, which are obtained from attending

conferences, lectures, presentations assist Certifi ed

Athletic Trainers in expanding their knowledge and training

in the ever-changing world of medicine and rehabilitative

therapy.

ASU athletic teams enjoy support on the sidelines from

some of the best spirit organizations at the collegiate level. The

award-winning ASU cheerleaders proudly support the Rams

and Rambelles and encourage fans to take part in the pride and

pageantry of ASU athletics.

Aside from cheering for football, volleyball, men’s

basketball and women’s basketball, the cheerleaders also work

with school administrators in promoting positive school spirit

and leadership on campus and throughout the community.

The cheerleaders do all this in addition to maintaining their

academics. Selection to the squad is competitive, and tryouts

are held each spring.

The ASU Ram Marching Band is one of the fi nest units of

its kind in the country with numerous awards and national event

appearances to its credit. The band performs distinctive and

creative halftime shows at each Rams football home game and

at selected road games. The band also provides entertainment

throughout the games and for other ASU athletic and campus

events. The Director of Bands at Angelo State is Daniel

McCloud, who joined the music faculty in 2007.

The Angelettes, a precision dance ensemble, perform at

each ASU football game. Selection to the squad is competitive

and tryouts are held each fall. The Angelettes perform

synchronized routines with the band for football halftime

performances and also perform at other athletic events.

The mighty Ram stands proudly as the mascot for

Angelo State University’s athletic teams. While many other

universities feature a big horn ram as a mascot, Angelo

State’s mascot represents the domestic Rambouillet

sheep, a compact white-wooled animal that played a major

role in San Angelo’s agrarian history.

With its long, curving horns, the Rambouillet Ram is

a distinguished animal in a breed that originated in Spain

over two centuries ago with the famed Merino fl ocks of

that country. Exportation of the valued sheep, known to be

a producer of the fi nest wool in the world, was forbidden

by the Spanish government until 1786 when the ban was

fi nally lifted by the King of Spain and a small herd was sent

to the Rambouillet farm near Paris, France.

The breed is still bred at the farm to this day, using

stock descended from the original herd shipped from

Spain. The City of San Angelo is the headquarters for

the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association and is

considered the top breeding center for the sheep in the

United States. There are numerous Rambouillet ranches in

the San Angelo area. San Angelo remains one of the major

buying and shipping centers for the fi ne Rambouillet wool.

The ASU Agriculture Department maintains a fl ock

of the sheep that has been honored with various regional,

national and international awards over the years at wool

and sheep competitions. One of the rams from this herd

serves as a mascot at each of the Rams home football

games. The ram, nicknamed “Dominic,” stands on the

sidelines with his agricultural student handlers.

In addition to Dominic, the costumed Roscoe D. Ram

attends nearly all home ASU athletic events to represent

the spirit of all Rams and Rambelles fans. Roscoe has

been honored through the years as one of the top mascots

in the country at various cheerleading and spirit camps.

He also helps future mascots from around the area with

mini-camps in the summer.

Dr. Joseph C. Rallo became the fourth president of Angelo State University in 2007, culminating a dual career in higher education and in the U.S. Air Force. He served as president of the Lone Star Conference Council of Presidents, the governing body of the athletic conference, during 2009-10. The council has final decision-making authority over any legislation, policy or activity pertaining to the conference and its member institutions. Previously, Rallo had served the council as first and second vice president.

Since becoming Angelo State’s president, Rallo has been appointed to senior leadership positions on several boards, serving as the secretary/treasurer of the Texas Council of Public University Presidents and Chancellors, on the President’s Committee on International Education-AASCU and on the Board of Trustees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). His broad perspective on higher education has given him a great appreciation on the role of athletics in university life. “My experience has been that the competitive nature of athletics translates in a positive way to all aspects of life, on campus and beyond,” said the Staten Island, N.Y., native. “Student athletes tend to have higher GPAs, engage in more community volunteer activities, and serve as positive role models for junior high and high school students.” Dr. Rallo himself could serve as a role model for balancing professional careers in both higher education and the military. His academic career has spanned 29 years at six institutions. His last stop before ASU was at Western Illinois University, where he served four years as provost and academic vice president, plus a stint as interim president. He has served as dean of the College of Business and Administration and the Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. As director of the Colorado Institute for Technology Transfer and Implementation, he established the journal Comparative Technology Transfer

and Society, published by the Johns Hopkins University Press. From 1992-99, he chaired the executive committee of the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU), a consortia of the 15 public institutions and Shiga Prefecture in Hikone, Japan, with extensive on-site programs focused on language, culture and business. His 27-year military career began in 1981 with a commission in the U.S. Navy. He was cross commissioned in the U.S. Air Force in 1986 and remained with that branch of service until his retirement as a colonel. He spent seven years on active duty before going into the reserves. His last assignments before retiring in the summer of 2008 were as liaison officer for the U.S. Air Force Academy and as individual mobilization augmentee to the commandant, Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell AFB, Ala. Dr. Rallo has published extensively on global business topics with an emphasis on the European Union and Japan. He was selected in 1978 as the first American Fellow to the European University Institute, established by the European Union as its primary educational and research institution, and located in Florence, Italy. He has also been named as a Fulbright Scholar and NATO Fellow. He received his B.A. in Russian history in 1971 from Lafayette College; his J.D. in 1976 from Western New England College; and his M.A. in 1978 and Ph.D. in 1980 in international relations from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University.

Kevin McCarty oversees the publicity and promotion of the 13-sport ASU athletic department, supervises the official athletic website AngeloSports.com, and directs the department’s social media initiatives. He came to ASU from Illinois State, where he earned a master’s degree in kinesiology and recreation with a concentration in sport management. While at Illinois State, McCarty served as the media contact for the Redbird baseball team, secondary contact for the Redbird football team, and was co-editor of the football and basketball game day programs. McCarty earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Kansas State, where he spent three years as a media relations student assistant. Additionally, McCarty served as a student assistant at Oklahoma State University and Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College and worked with Athletes in Action’s Texas Collegiate League team in Mineral Wells, Texas. McCarty and his wife, Brooksie, reside in San Angelo.

Lindy Zamora assists in all aspects of ASU’s athletic communications efforts and serves as the primary media relations contact for volleyball, women’s basketball and baseball. Zamora arrived at ASU after assisting in the University of Redlands athletic department where she assisted with volleyball, football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. Prior to her experience with Redlands, Zamora worked as an intern in The Summit League’s media relations department and at Loyola University Chicago. At The Summit League, Zamora was in charge of men’s soccer, cross country, track and field, swimming and diving, and softball. While at Loyola, she was responsible for the media relations efforts for men’s soccer, cross country, track and field, and men’s volleyball. A 2007 graduate of UCLA, Zamora worked with the UCLA baseball team for three seasons and interned in the athletic marketing department. The Redlands, Calif., native and her cat, Lilly, reside in San Angelo, Texas.

Tommy Schield is a first-year graduate assistant in the Angelo State Athletic Communications office. The Bellflower, Ill., native is currently pursuing his master’s degree in communications and serves as ASU’s primary media contact for softball and women’s soccer. Before arriving in San Angelo, Schield completed a one-year internship for Conference USA in Dallas, Texas where he was the primary media contact for cross country, swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf and softball. He was also the secondary football contact. Schield graduated from Illinois State University in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in public relations. While at ISU, he was the media relations contact for men’s golf and helped with game-day operations for football, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, softball and baseball.

Kathleen Brasfield has been a fixture in the Angelo State Athletic Department and a voice in NCAA Division II athletics nationally, for more than 30 years. Hired in 1978 as head volleyball coach, Brasfield has devoted the majority of her professional career to Angelo State, taking over the role of women’s athletics director in 1982 and overall athletics director in 2004. She retired as volleyball coach prior to the 2005 season to focus on the athletics director role.

As athletics director, Brasfield has seen the ASU programs grow to 13 intercollegiate sports, the most recent additions being baseball in 2005 and women’s golf in 2009. During the 2009-10 academic year, nine of the 12 ASU teams advanced to postseason play, including six teams that made regional or national tournament appearances. Recent highlights under Brasfield’s leadership include the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championship in women’s track and field. The men finished ninth in the national track meet, marking the second consecutive year that both the Rams and Rambelles placed in the top 10 at the NCAA D-II National Track & Field Championships. The Rambelles softball team finished third for the second straight year in the D-II National Championship Tournament after hosting three straight NCAA D-II regional tournaments (2007-09). The 2004 softball squad brought home ASU’s first NCAA National Championship. Under Brasfield, ASU student-athletes have also gotten stronger, literally. In 2008, she approved the hiring of ASU’s first full-time strength and conditioning coach. Off the field, Brasfield has taken the ASU Athletic Department to the next level. She was instrumental in procuring the first-ever endowment solely for Angelo State athletics, thanks to the support of Dr. Robert and Jean Ann LeGrand. The endowment provided for a new scoreboard at the recently renamed LeGrand Sports Complex ,

formerly known as the ASU Multipurpose Sports Complex, and improvements to the track facility prior to the NCAA D-II National Championships in 2009 when ASU hosted the meet for the fifth time in school history. Also active on the national scene, Brasfield serves on the NCAA D-II Management Council and served as chair of the council for the 2010 calendar year. She previously served several stints on the NCAA D-II Volleyball Regional Advisory Committee and spent four seasons on the NCAA D-II Volleyball National Advisory Committee, acting as national chair in 2004. She has been equally active in the Lone Star Conference. In her 26 years as ASU head volleyball coach, Brasfield led the Rambelles to 647 wins. She was named the LSC Coach of the Year a league-record eight times and retired as one of the top five winningest active coaches in NCAA D-II. She also led the Rambelles to seven league titles, including four consecutive LSC crowns from 1982-85. Fittingly, several additional awards have come Brasfield’s way over the years. She was honored as a member of the LSC’s All-75 Year Team in 2007 as a volleyball coach and earned the NAGWA Pathfinder Award for her contributions to the achievement of women in sports. A native of Abilene, Brasfield received her bachelor’s degree from Hardin-Simmons University in 1969 and her master’s degree from ASU in 1980.

James Reid became assistant director of athletics during the 2007-08 academic year. In addition to his director’s duties, Reid also serves as head coach of the Rams and Rambelles cross country and track and field programs. In his administrative role, Reid coordinates game and event management, the graduate assistant program, community engagement activities, sports medicine issues or concerns, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. In his 11 seasons as the Rams and Rambelles head coach, Reid has led the men’s team to six top 10 finishes and the women’s program to five top 10 finishes at the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Track and Field Championships. His top NCAA finishes include the women’s national championship in 2010 and runner-up title in 2009 and a fifth-place finish for the men in 2001. During his tenure, he has mentored 12 athletes who have gone on to win 16 individual national champion titles, including one relay team title. A native of Sweeny, Reid earned his bachelor’s degree from ASU in 1991 and his master’s degree in education from ASU in 1993. He and his wife, Nina, have three children, Jacob, Kyla and J.D.

Christina Whetsel joined the ASU Athletic Department in 2006 as director of compliance and student athlete services. Her title was changed to director of athletic compliance in 2010 to reflect expanded responsibilities. An Angelo State graduate, Whetsel was an all-conference performer for the Rambelle soccer team during the early years of the program from 1995-99. She then served as a graduate assistant coach. Whetsel still ranks among ASU’s career leaders in several statistical categories and still holds the single-game and single-season assists records for the Rambelles. A native of Austin, Christina and her husband, Daniel, reside in San Angelo.

Dr. John Wegner, associate professor of English and director of ASU’s Center for Innovation in Teaching and Research, began a three-year term as the university’s faculty athletics representative in the fall of 2010. A Freeport native who completed high school in Tomball where he was a multi-sport athlete, Wegner joined the ASU faculty in 1997. He has been a longtime member of Angelo State’s Athletic Council. He began his college career at Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College on a baseball scholarship and later earned his bachelor’s degree in English/sociology in 1991 and his master’s degree in English in 1993, both from Sam Houston State University. He completed his Ph.D. in English at the University of North Texas in 1997. Wegner and his wife, Alayne, have two sons, Jordan and Clay.

Troy Hill began work with the ASU athletic training staff full-time in 1999 and became head athletic trainer in 2003. Hill was the assistant athletic trainer for four years at ASU before assuming the head position. From 2003 through the 2009 academic year, Hill held dual responsibilities as head athletic trainer and as program director for Angelo State’s Athletic Training Education Program. He is certified by the Board of Certification and licensed by the Texas Department of State Health Services. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the Texas State Athletic Trainers Association. Hill received his master’s degree in kinesiology from Angelo State in 1999. He holds a bachelor’s degree from ASU as well.

Joe Briley became a member of Angelo State’s athletic training staff in 2009 after 11 years with San Angelo Community Sports Medicine, working with a variety of area athletic programs. He served several area high schools, the San Angelo Colts baseball team, the San Angelo Stampede-Express arena football team and the San Angelo Outlaws hockey team.
