2011 ALZHEIMER’SEDUCATIONALConference WELCOME

Tenna Wiles, Co-Chair Palm Beach County Medical Society

Tenna Wiles has been the Executive Director for Palm Beach County Medical Society since 1998. Ms. Wiles is the current president of Palm Beach County Community Health Alliance and past president of the Florida Conference of Medical Society Executives. “Between the ground-breaking Alzheimer’s research being performed daily and the ongoing health care issues that affect us all, there is a relevance and importance to this conference as never before,” stated Ms. Wiles. “The Alzheimer’s Educational Conference is an opportunity to educate and address the needs of a diverse group comprised of family caregivers, health care professionals, legislators —virtually anyone who is concerned with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.”

Thank you for joining us at the 2011 Alzheimer’s Educational Conference!

We have themed this year’s event, “A Life After the Diagnosis,” and over the next two days, you will have the opportunity to hear many experts discuss the ways families may have a life after the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or a dementia disorder.

Because of the growing incident rate of Alzheimer’s disease and the need for more education, we have increased the scope of our

educational platform. As you browse this year’s agenda, you will see sessions ranging across caregiver stress, research, clinical trials, vascular dementia, legal issues such as guardianship and durable power of attorney, behavioral management and the list goes on.

Our keynote speaker, Ms. Gail Sheehy, is the best-selling author of 16 books including “Passages” and her latest publication, “Passages in Caregiving.” I know you will truly enjoy listening and learning from her as she shares her inspiring story of her own 17-year journey as a caregiver for her husband. Ms. Sheehy will discuss how families across the globe are facing the same challenges we all are, and they are able to have a quality of life beyond the diagnosis, using creative strategies and a network of support. You will find her presentation dynamic and engaging, and I know

you will come away with a new outlook on the different phases of life and how we can enjoy them to the fullest.

Also on our roster of plenary speakers are Dr. Juergen Bludau, from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Division of Aging. Dr. Bludau will explore strategies and tips for better communication between families living with Alzheimer’s disease and their physicians—something that is becoming more and more important each day. I am especially excited to introduce Laura Jones and her “Caregivers’ Tribute” to recognize and honor the strength and determination our caregivers share. And last but absolutely not least, Dr. Ron Davis of Scripps Research Institute, who will share the latest developments from his team.

I am grateful for the support of our Conference Co-Chairs, Ms. Amy Dean and Ms. Tenna Wiles. On behalf of our Board of Directors, I thank Amy and Tenna for their leadership, support and dedication to caregiver and professional education in our local communities. Please join me over the next two days as we learn and enrich our lives.

GAIL SHEEHYMAY 6

As the bestselling author of 16 books, including Passages, Gail Sheehy has rocked the culture and changed the way millions of women and men around the world look at the stages of their lives. In 2010 she took on the most challenging and personal issue in her latest book: Passages in Caregiving: Turning Chaos Into Confidence. She tells the inspiring story of her own journey of 17 years caring for her husband and fills the book with stories of families who we can all relate to, and their most creative strategies.

Bill Moyers wrote: “Trust me, there is no better guide to caregiving.”

“This is one of those rare books that can lighten even the heaviest of loads.”

– Rosalynn Carter

As a literary journalist, Ms. Sheehy was one of the original contributors to New York magazine. A contributing editor to Vanity Fair since 1984, she won the Washington Journalism Review Award for Best Magazine Writer in America for her in-depth character portraits of national and world leaders, including both Presidents Bush, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Newt Gingrich, Margaret Thatcher, and Mikhail Gorbachev. Ms. Sheehy is a seven-time recipient of the New York Newswomen’s Club Front Page Award for distinguished journalism.

One of the most popular speakers on the lecture circuit, Ms. Sheehy offers dynamic programs based on her groundbreaking investigations and observations of the lives of men and women within different phases of their lives and how they can enjoy them to the fullest.

ROOM 2A ARTHRITIS AND ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE: RECENT ADVANCES IN RESEARCH

Summary A presentation focusing on new research which suggests that there’s a silver lining to this inflammatory joint disease. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients appear to be about 8-fold less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease (AD) than the general population. While it has been commonly assumed that RA patients’ usage of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) helped prevent the onset and progression of AD, NSAID clinical trials have proven unsuccessful in AD patients. We sought instead to identify intrinsic factors within RA pathogenesis itself might underlie RA’s protective effect.

Presenter Timothy Boyd, Ph.D., Medical Sciences, is a Biological Scientist at University of South Florida’s Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Center. He is a researcher and the first author on this groundbreaking new study.

Audience Professionals and Experienced Caregivers

ROOM 2B EMPOWERED FOR DIFFICULT DECISIONS

Summary Are you struggling to make medical decisions, car key decisions, or end-of-life decisions? Attendees will learn the decision-making pathway, framework and tools to use when making decisions for those who can no longer speak for themselves. This is not a one-size-fits-all solution but can be adapted depending on the situation. Emphasis on respect and compassion as the core values will be discussed in the decision-making process.

Presenter Viki Kind, M.A. is a clinical bioethicist, medical educator and hospice volunteer. Her book, “The Caregiver’s Path to Compassionate Decision Making: Making Choices for Those Who Can’t,” guides families and healthcare professionals through the difficult process of making decisions for those who are losing or have lost the ability to think.

Audience All Caregivers

ROOM 2C ALZHEIMER’S 101

Summary New caregivers will receive a crash course in the causes of memory loss, signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, the various stages of advancing Alzheimer’s disease, and behavioral changes associated with each level.
