QUEEN’S GAELS - WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL MEDIA NOTES - 2011-123

The 2011-12 Gaels women’s volleyball team entered the season with a strong mix of returning veterans as well as an influx of youth having 12 first year players joining the team. After dropping their first game of the regular season in Ottawa to the Gee-Gees the Gaels took wins in six of their next seven games. This streak included dominant performances on their home court with their first three home games being straight set wins over RMC, Toronto and McMaster respectively.

After going two and three in their next five the Gaels finished the season strong with five straight wins including a key 3-2 win over Ottawa at home on January 27. Queen’s finished out the season in third place in the OUA with a 13-5 record earning home court advantage for their OUA quarter-final playoff match. The Gaels hosted the number six seed in the OUA the Brock Badgers.

Natalie Gray finished first on the team with 214 total kills on the season and 3.24 kills per game. Becky Billings topped all Gaels in digs with 232 while middle Katie Hagarty led the team with 33 service aces. Queen’s setter Anna Pedjase led the way with 578 assists.

Two Gaels were honored by the OUA as Gray was given the OUA award of merit while being named an OUA first team All-Star while Becky Billings was given second team All-Star status.

In their opening round playoff match the Badgers were no match for the Gaels who took a 3-0 win over Brock winning by 10 or more points in each set. Gray had 15 kills in the win while Pedjase aided the attack game with 30 assists.

With the win the Gaels moved on to the Final Four which was hosted by the Ottawa Gee-Gees after York was disqualified for use of an ineligible player. Queen’s drew the Toronto Varsity Blues in their opening match. The Gaels got out in front early with a two sets to none lead, but the Blues fought back to force a fifth and final set. Queen’s persevered with a 15-10 set win securing their first every OUA championship appearance in school history. Pedjase was key to setting up the offense all game with 60 assists while Shannon Walsh played a strong defensive game with her 22 digs.

In the OUA final the Gaels took on the host Gee-Gees in a back-and-forth battle. After the two rivals traded set wins Queen’s started to put on the pressure, the Gaels secured a 25-17 set win to go up two to one in the game and closed out the championship with a convincing 25-10 fourth and final set. Gray was key in the Gaels attack once again with 19 kills and 11 digs while fellow veteran Billings added 15 digs and 12 kills of her own. This was the first OUA title for the Queen’s Gaels women’s volleyball team in school history.

The Gaels now qualify for their first ever CIS championship in school history.

Joely Christian-Macfarlane

Christian-Macfarlane is entering her fifth season as head coach of the Queen’s women’s volleyball team. In her five years with the Gaels, the team has posted a 68-42 regular season record, qualifying for the playoffs in all five seasons. Queen’s best post-season finish during Christian-Macfarlane’s five seasons is their 2011-12 OUA Championship.

Prior to joining the Gaels, Christian-Macfarlane served as an assistant coach with the Toronto Varsity Blues from 2004 to 2007. During her time with Toronto, the Varsity Blues made three consecutive OUA final four appearances, winning one silver and one bronze medal.

In 2005, she guided Team Ontario to a gold medal at the 2005 Canada Summer Games, the province’s first in women’s volleyball since 1967.

Before Christian-Macfarlane entered the coaching world, she was a successful women’s player with Canadian National Teams as well as with the Regina Cougars and the Manitoba Bisons. She competed for Team Canada as a member of both the National ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams and in 1988, she helped the National Junior Team qualify for the Junior World Championships.

At the university level, Christian-Macfarlane is a four-time Great Plains Athletics Conference first team all-star and was a first-team All-Canadian with the Regina Cougars in 1989-90. After transferring to the Manitoba Bisons in 1993-94, Christian-Macfarlane helped the Bisons capture back-to-back bronze medals at the CIAU Championships. She currently ranks eighth all-time on the Bisons single season kill efficiency list after hitting 29% during her first season as a Bison.

QUEEN’S GAELS - WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL MEDIA NOTES - 2011-1213

Queen’s powers past Brock in straight sets, head to OUA final four

KINGSTON, Ont. (February 18, 2012) – The number three seed Queen’s Gaels (1-0) continued their strong play into the post-season as they easily got past the six seeded Brock Badgers in straight sets in OUA playoff action on Saturday afternoon. Set scores were 25-14, 25-14 and 25-15 to make it a 3-0 victory for Queen’s.

On the day, the Gaels power attack combined with Brock errors made the difference. Queen’s was led by Natalie Gray of Oshawa, Ont. who had a game high 15 kills to go along with five digs and three serving aces. Becky Billings of Ottawa chipped in with 10 kills of her own while Anna Pedjase of Waterloo, Ont. had 30 assists. Brock was led by Rachel Roorda of St. George, Ont. who had a team high nine kills.

As a team, the Badgers committed 12 service errors and 13 attacking errors on 64 total attacks compared to the Gaels eight and 12 on 80. Queen’s serving pushed them over the top as they had 12 service aces of their own without giving up a single one to the Badgers on the day.

The outside combo of Gray and Billings were too powerful for the Badgers to contain as the two were able to get clear looks and finish their attacks strong all afternoon.

“We did a good job to keep the pressure on them early and then kept it going the whole game without letting up.” said veteran

outside hitter Billings on the match. “We just kept building on what we started each set and got the win.”

“Everyone stayed positive and supportive throughout and that really helped for us to stay focused.”

Queen’s will now move on to the OUA final four next weekend which will be hosted by the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Queen’s advances to OUA Championship after defeating Toronto 3-2, will take on Ottawa

OTTAWA (February 25, 2012) – The Queen’s Gaels and Toronto Varsity Blues went the full distance in a back-and-forth affair on Saturday afternoon that saw the Gaels grab the win 3-2 in the OUA semifinal match. The set scores finished 25-22, 26-24, 25-27, 24-26, 15-10.

The Gaels posted strong numbers across the board in the match with three players recording double-digit kills led by Natalie Gray of Oshawa, Ont. who had a game high 28.

Anna Pedjase of Waterloo Ont. was a key to setting up the offense as she posted 60 assists, while defensively Queen’s had six contributors with double-digit digs including Kingston, Ont. native Shannon Walsh who led the way with 22.

Toronto stayed toe-to-toe with the Gaels all afternoon despite the early two sets to none deficit. They were led by Charlotte Sider of Ottawa who had 21 kills and nine digs.

After going up two sets to none the Blue battled back to force a fifth and final set with Queen’s. With the Gaels and Blues tied at 9-9 in the final frame, Queen’s strung together a three point run which included two kills from Gray to take the lead 12-9. After a Toronto point the Gaels kept the momentum rolling another three point run to close out the match.

Queen’s will now move on to the OUA championship where they will take on the Ottawa Gee-Gees. in the first set as they never trailed after being down 5-4. Queen’s stayed the course and after the Gee-Gees pulled to within one at 19-18 the Gaels went on a four point run to lead 23-18 before closing out the set 25-19.

The second set was nearly a reverse of the first as Ottawa never trailed in the set after falling behind 6-5 to Queen’s. The Gaels made it interesting, climbing to 22 points of their own but the Gee-Gees held on for the set win.

In set three Queen’s took control of the game opening up leads of 10-4, 14-9 and 21-15 before closing out the Gee-Gees at 25-18. Gray led the way with five of her 19

kills in the set.

The Gaels dropped behind mid-way through the fourth set but were able to create a six point swing going from being down 13-16, to leading 19-16 with the championship in their sights. With a 22-19 lead the Gaels took three of the final four points to secure the championship win.

“It was a fantastic tournament, a fantastic win,” said Gaels coach Joely Christian-Macfarlane, clutching the championship trophy. “We started the season with the idea that we were just going to play the best volleyball we could play match after match and we found a way to do that so when we got to the final we could play the best

match of the year. I’m very excited to take our team to McMaster.”

With the win the Gaels will now compete for a CIS title as they head to Hamilton for the 2012 CIS Women’s Volleyball Championship hosted by McMaster on March 2-4.
