The 2011-12 South Dakota State men’s swimming and divingteam looks to improve on its third-place Summit League finish lastseason with a squad filled with underclassmen.

The Jacks return three seniors after losing five seniors from lastyear. The team has nine newcomers including eight freshman.

“It simply means we have a strong, younger team that will needto count on the leadership of the older group. The upperclassmenwill be mentoring the younger ones in all facets of the program,”said head coach Brad Erickson.

Erickson will look to sophomores Chris Schreier and Phil Albu tolead after having outstanding freshman seasons.

Schreier had 21 total victories in his freshman campaign, eightschool records (four individually) and was named Summit Leagueswimmer of the week twice. Schreier won the 200 butterfly at theSummit League Championships.

“Both had a great championship meet, with Chris becoming ourfirt Summit League Champion. This not only gives us young talentand leadership, but also gives our men’s team credibility as anupper level Summit League team.”

Another standout freshman from last year was Phil Albu whocompeted in backstroke and medley relay events. Albu set schoolrecords in the 50 freestyle, 100 and 200 backstroke. He was alsopart of three school record relays.

On the diving side, Brad Schoreit returns who broke his schoolrecord in the 3-meter dive last year. Transfer Connor Florand joinsthe diving squad after competiting at Minnesota State Univesity hisfreshman year. Florand was a Division II All-American diver.

Freshman Wil Hogue could make an immediate impact for themen’s team in the sprint freestyle.

“He unofficially set a school record in the 50 freestyle at ourintrasquad meet, and should be one of the top top sprinters in theconference.”

The mix of youth and experience will bode well for SDSU andgive motivation for both sides.

SDSU has always stayed steady or improved on their SummitLeague finishes each year they have been in the league and this

season should be no different. The Summit League Championships are Feb. 15-18 in Rochester,

• SDSUSDSU Swimming & Diving Preview •After finishing runner-up last year, the women’s swimming and

diving team looks to climb up one more spot this year to claim theSummit League Championship.

The Jacks lose four letterwinners from last year including seniorsAlex Hoffman and Cassie Kozar. The team returns seven seniors andhas six newcomers including four freshman.

“We have a great returning team that knows what to expect, both for the regular season and the championship season. We havea larger senior class, which mean we can develop several leadersthat will impact our younger athletes,” said head coach BradErickson.

Seniors Jessica Ferley and Ashley Valdez will lead the way for theJacks.

Ferley has excelled in freestyle and backstroke events, whileValdez has done the same in the butterfly.

Freshman Andrea Budahl had an outstanding year for the Jacksin freestyle events. Budahl had twelve total victories last year. Shebroke the school record in the 1000 freestyle and was a member ofthe 800 freestyle relay.

“Andrea had a great freshman year. She worked extremely hardin practices, and her championship meet showed the rewards for allher hard work. It should set up a great career for her.”

One of the biggest holes that SDSU will have to fill is the loss ofAlex Hoffman who ended her career with 53 wins and was a partnine school records.

A freshman that could make an immediate impact is SamanthaFossum.

“Samantha Fossum will be a great addition to the women’s pro-gram. She is good in all distances of freestyle from the 50 to the1650. She also has a great work ethic and is eager to learn fromour senior class.

Even with the young team, Erickson sees no reason why the Jacksshould take a step back.

The Summit League Championships are Feb. 15-18 in Rochester,Michigan.

students in the fall of 2011, South Dakota StateUniversity is the state’s largest institution ofhigher education.EARLY HISTORY

Located in Brookings, SDSU was authorizedin 1881 by the Territorial Legislative Assemblyand serves as the state’s land-grant institution.Territorial Council member John O’BrienScobey, failing to obtain the penitentiary forBrookings, managed to secure Dakota Agricul-tural College for his city.

Although allocations fell short of the actual cost, the school was able to open in thefall of 1884 because the president, George Lil-ley, was willing to advance $500 — one-thirdof his salary — to finish three rooms in the newCentral Building.

In 1887, the Agricultural Experiment Stationwas established under the federal Hatch Act andlinked to the University to conduct research thatconcerned agriculture and the home. The Coop-erative Extension Service was added in 1914through the Smith-Lever Act.

During the first year of operation, onlypreparatory classes were held. College classesstarted in 1885 with five teachers, 17 freshmanand 61 preparatory students. Growth was slowand erratic for many years, but by the turn ofthe 20th century there were 242 students.

By 1990, enrollment topped more than9,000 students. Today, students from all 50states and more than 40 nations attend SDSU.

More than 70,000 degrees have beengranted since the college was chartered in1881.

COLLEGES ESTABLISHEDThe structure of the college became more

complex as enrollments increased. The first ninechairs of instruction established in 1884 included agriculture, science, mathematics,

English, modern languages, military tactics, veterinary science, practical business, politicaland domestic economy, and music.

By 1907, the year the name of the institutionwas changed to South Dakota State College ofAgriculture and Mechanic Arts, there were 22departments on campus.

In 1964, when “State College” was renamedSouth Dakota State University, there were sixcolleges; today degrees are offered throughthese eight colleges:

• Agricultural and Biological Sciences• Arts and Sciences• Education and Human Sciences• Engineering• General Studies• Nursing• Pharmacy• Graduate School• Honors CollegeSDSU also offers degree programs through

the University Center in Sioux Falls. Evening,RDTN, Internet and off-campus courses are co-ordinated through the Office of Academic Affairsand Outreach.

The educational opportunities don’t end inthe classroom or laboratory as South DakotaState University is home to several facilities, in-cluding museums and gardens, which highlightSouth Dakota history and heritage.

The South Dakota Art Museum houses sev-eral collections, including early Sioux Indiantribal art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings ofpioneer life and the exclusive Vera WayMarghab linens.

The State Agricultural Heritage Museumtransformed the former Stock Judging Pavilioninto a home for exhibits that record and pre-serve the agrarian heritage of South Dakota.

The 70-acre McCrory Gardens and SouthDakota Arboretum, located south and east ofcampus, provide a beautiful setting for arearesidents and tourists to enjoy a stroll throughthe radiant colors and fragrances of one of the

top 10 small ornamental gardens in the nation. It is also recognized as an All-American DisplayGarden, one of only 13 in the nation.
