““

Travis Bass was a dear friend of head basketball coach Klint Pleasant. They were teammates together on the foot-ball team at Abilene Christian University from 1994-1996. They remained extremely close after their college days and were major influences in each other’s lives. Due to the close relationship, Travis ended up becoming one of RC basketball’s biggest fans and supporters. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2007 and fought hard for four years but succumbed to the disease in May 2011. Coach Pleasant traveled to Seattle, WA several times during Travis’ fight with ALS and then eulogized him at his funeral.

Travis was a special individual and one of the most talented persons Coach Pleasant has ever known. Travis owned real estate, car lots and mini storages, and was an accountant by trade. He also developed and sold his own BBQ sauce and had a BBQ catering business. He also studied law later in his life and graduated from the Uni-versity of Idaho with a law degree. He wanted to fight for people that needed help and always envisioned doing most of his work pro bono. He loved life, loved people and never seemed to meet a stranger.

Travis would take off from work for weeks and sometimes months at a time during the basketball season to watch Pleasant coach while he was at Wayne State, University of Tennessee-Martin, Kent State University, Abilene Chris-tian and of course, Rochester College.

Travis and Coach Pleasant shared an incredible bond. They traveled all across the country together and not a day went by, until Travis was too weak to do so, that they did not talk. Most importantly, Travis was a man of deep faith. Coach Pleasant sites his relationship with Travis in college as one of the key influences that helped him in his own faith journey.

Coach Pleasant remains in contact with Travis’ parents (Randy and Sheila) and his wife (Kim) and children (Hannah, Savannah and Tristin).

Travis loved RC Basketball, and his life and memory will be honored all throughout the 2011-12 season as Pleas-ant’s players will wear a “TB” patch on their uniform.

Travis Bass1972-2011

There is no way to put into words how important my relationship with Travis was and still is to me. He was my hero and my mentor, but most of all he was my dear friend. Not a day goes by that I do not think about him and the incredible influence he had on my life. He was there on my best day (the day Rachel said, “I do”) and he was there on my worst day (the day the doctors told me that Rachel would probably die of brain cancer). I of-ten find myself both sad and angry because he’s gone…but then I remind myself, to have a friend like Travis for just one day was one of the great blessings of my life.

HEAD COACHKlint PleasantRochester College is a very familiar place for new Head Men’s Basketball Coach Klint Pleasant. Pleasant takes the reigns from his father and long time RC basketball coach, Garth Pleasant, after assisting him for the past four seasons.

Pleasant’s coaching resume is among the best. He comes to RC from NCAA Division II Abilene Christian University where he was cited as the youngest NCAA Division II college coach in the country. At ACU, Pleasant coached the Wildcats to 25 wins in his first two seasons after taking over a program that had won only 13 games in the two previous seasons.

Before coaching at ACU, Pleasant was an assistant coach at Kent State University (NCAA Div. I). During the 2001-2002 season, Pleasant helped coach the Golden Flashes to a Mid-American Conference record 30 games as the team advanced to the NCAA Div. I Tournament’s Elite Eight. The University of Indiana denied them a trip to the Final 4 on a nationally televised game on CBS. Since then, the Kent State team that Pleasant helped coach was named the “Mid-American Team of the Decade.” Pleasant coached and played a major role in developing the team’s center, John Edwards, into an NBA player. Edwards went on to play for both the Indiana Pacers and the Atlanta Hawks. He also coached power forward, Antonio Gates, who now plays in the NFL and is among the best tight ends in the game. Following his only season at Kent State, Pleasant was offered a chance to follow Head Coach Stan Heath to SEC powerhouse Arkansas. Pleasant, however, decided to remain at Kent State, only to be offered the head coaching job at ACU three months later. In addition, Rachel (Pleasant’s wife) received her master’s degree in Exercise Physiology while at Kent State.

Prior to joining the Kent State program, Pleasant served as an assistant coach at (NCAA Div. I) University of Tennessee-Martin (1999-2001) and (NCAA Div. II) Wayne State University (1998-1999). While at UT-Martin, he helped the Skyhawks qualify for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament for the first time in school history. During his tenure at WSU, Pleasant helped lead the team to a 25-5 record, a top 5 ranking in the country, a conference championship and a NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen appearance. Pleasant completed his

master’s degree in Education in 1999 while coaching at UT-Martin.

Pleasant’s coaching career started at Lipscomb University where he served as a student assistant under legendary head coach Don Meyer, who is the fastest coach in the history of college basketball to reach 700 victories.

Before his coaching career, Pleasant played football for Abilene Christian University (NCAA Div. II) under head coach Dr. Bob Strader in 1994. He graduated college from Lipscomb University in 1998.

As a prep, Pleasant attended Waterford Kettering High School in Waterford, MI and played football for legendary high school football coach Mike Berry. He was a unanimous First Team All-Conference selection in football and was his team’s co-captain on the baseball, basketball and football teams. His 48 pass receptions in his senior year put him among the top five in the state of Michigan.

Pleasant’s roots are planted deeply in Rochester College’s soil as his grandfather Lucien Palmer was a founding father of the college. Dr. Palmer served as the first dean and later served as president for eight years. His father, Garth Pleasant, has served at Rochester College for nearly 40 years as the men’s

basketball coach, athletic director and as a member of the faculty. Klint and Rachel made the move back to Rochester College in 2005 after the birth of their first child, Abigail.

Pleasant also serves as the RC Athletic Director and Vice President of Enrollment. Recruiting and enrollment numbers have increased more than 40% since Pleasant took over the reigns. In only his second year managing the recruiting process, the college experienced the largest incoming class in its 52 year history. The Pleasant family experienced some personal struggles after moving back to Rochester Hills as Rachel survived a brain tumor and several surgeries. Rachel and Klint frequently travel to various places as they speak about their incredible journey. Klint also preaches part-time at the Lake Orion Church of Christ.

Pleasant resides in Oxford, MI with his wife Rachel (Stevens) and two daughters Abigail (7) and Julia (2).

ASSISTANT COACHTom WebbTom Webb enters his first year on the Rochester College Basketball staff after two seasons as an assistant coach for Purdue Calumet’s men’s basketball program. Webb played a crucial role in the PUC basketball program by heading up recruiting, film exchange and player development.

Webb is no stranger to the RC basketball program where was a four-year player, helping the team to a record four 20-win seasons, including a school-record 25 victories in his senior campaign. Webb also helped the Warriors earn four-straight USCAA national tournament appearances, while serving as the team captain on the 2008-09 squad that advanced to the national championship game.

The young coach participated in a number of coaching clinics during his time at Rochester, regularly attending legendary mentor Don Meyer’s Coaching Clinic. He was also a part of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan clinics, working with high profile coaches such as John Belien, Hubie Brown, Jamie Dixon, Tom Izzo and Rick Majerus.

Webb graduated from Rochester College in 2009 with a degree in behavioral sciences. He currently resides in Auburn Hills, MI.

CoaCH PleasanT on ToM:

“I am thrilled that Tom will be joining our athletic staff. I considered and spoke with several people for the position, but Tom surfaced to the top every time. Most important, Tom is a former student athlete (2009) at RC and he understands our mission. He graduated in four years and was a team captain. In addition, he was a vital part of four very successful seasons on the men’s basketball team. He is arguably the hardest playing basketball player that my Dad ever coached and his work ethic as an employee is the same. I have watched him closely since he left RC and he has impressed me in many ways. He is organized and possesses a passion to do things with excellence. Tom is from Davidson, MI and spent the last two seasons as the head assistant basketball coach at Purdue University-Calumet (an NAIA school in Hammond, IN).”

ASSISTANT COACHGeorge BeaudoinIf the game situation calls for it, Beaudoin can be seen leaning out, offering his glasses to referees as they run down the floor. If his voice goes out, he starts waving a towel. He is a master motivator. Beaudoin’s connection to the basketball program began during the 1983-1984 season, and it continued as his son, Dan, played on Rochester’s 1988 squad on his way to becoming college valedictorian. Beaudoin, who retired as lieutenant from the Madison Heights Fire Department in 1996, and his wife, Mary Ellen, are the parents of two other children and the grandparents of four.

CoaCH PleasanT on GeorGe:

“Coach George has been a part of our program since 1984, and is one of the finest individuals I have ever been around. He is a servant leader and will do anything for anyone. I think next to my father there is no one who has given as much to RC basketball than Coach George. He is an encourager and a motivator. Our guys love being around him and his presence in practice and at games is invaluable. I was so excited to hear that he was still going to remain a part of the staff after my Dad retired. I can’t imagine RC basketball without Coach George.“

Scott also serves as the international recruiting coordinator, is the liaison for Admissions with Student Financial Services, and works directly with the VP of Admissions and Director of Athletics in creating the overall strategy for Admissions and Athletics.

Scott is no stranger to Rochester as he grew up in Clawson, MI. Scott’s family has been long-time supporters of the College dating back to the school’s early years. Scott began his service at Rochester College in 2002 as he brought his strong business background to the classroom as a faculty member in the College of Business. Scott’s success in leading an employee fundraising campaign for the Athletic Center and his desire to work with prospective students led him out of the classroom and into administration. Scott brings a wealth of experience to Rochester College as he spent 14 years in banking and investment. In addition to his responsibilities in banking, Scott also spent time as a personal financial advisor for professional athletes. Basketball Media Guide 2011-2012 1111

PRESEASON OUTLOOKOn Friday, Sept. 6, Rochester College head basketball coach Klint Pleasant released the 2011-12 basketball schedule. The schedule features some very tough opponents as the Warriors look to build off of last season’s 25-8 record. The 2011-12 schedule features five contests against NCAA Division I teams, one against a NCAA Division II team, one against a NCAA Division III team, six against NAIA teams, and several against USCAA teams.

The Warriors will continue their traditional opening contest in Sarnia, Canada against OCAA opponent Lambton College. “We will once again play some of the OCAA schools in Ontario, Canada. These schools are typically very athletic and we have had some great games throughout the years with teams like St. Clair and Lambton. We will add Fleming, Sault, and George Brown out of Toronto. These are great games for us because we are close geographically and have had longstanding relationships with these schools athletically.

The home opener will be against Madonna University on Nov. 2. There will be much added excitement to this year’s home matches as there will be T-shirt give-a-ways and halftime contests that involve crowd participation. Coach Pleasant is very excited about the Warrior’s home schedule. “We have 11 home games this year and are fortunate to have every one of them across the street at Rochester High School. It is a beautiful facility and we are working hard to make it look and feel like a home game every time we play there,” said Pleasant.

Pleasant explained how Rochester High School was kind enough to partner with RC and allow banners, permanent shot clocks, and an RC scorers table to be placed in the gym. Coach Pleasant feels his team will be comfortable on their home court. “We will try to have as much ‘crimson’ in the gym as possible,” he said.

Playing the most home games in recent history, the Warriors will also enjoy their time on the road as they compete in some of the largest venues college basketball has to offer. “We are fortunate to be able to play five NCAA Division I schools,” said Pleasant. “All five of the coaches are friends of mine, and I’m grateful they are helping us out.”

NCAA DI Opponents and Dates

Kent State University Nov. 7 7 p.m.

University of Tennessee-Martin Nov. 19 6 p.m.

Eastern Michigan University Nov. 23 7 p.m.

Oakland University Dec. 12 7 p.m.

Austin Peay State University Dec. 17 7 p.m.

“These games give Rochester College priceless PR as we play in front of large crowds and have our scores posted nationally. They also prepare us for our season when we play against NAIA and USCAA opponents. Our guys love playing the games and it

helps us gauge where we are and what we need to continue to work on,” said Pleasant.

Preparation will be the key as the Warriors tip off against NCAA Division II Grand Valley State University and NCAA Division III Hope College. “We are Hope’s home opener. This game will by far be the toughest atmosphere we play in all year. It will be a sell out crowd and they will be rowdy. It’s a great opportunity for our team and it will be exciting.”

The Warriors will also be squaring off against NAIA powerhouse Huntington University out of Indiana who finished the regular season last year with a 21-10 record. Marygrove College and Madonna University will also be heading into town to play in front of the Warrior faithful. “We play several home-and-home games against good NAIA competition,” said Pleasant. “Marygrove is a team we play that is like us (both NAIA and USCAA). I have a lot of respect for their coach (Dave Sichterman) and we have appreciated the relationship our schools have had over the years.”

The Marygrove-Rochester College rivalry has grown immensely in the past couple of seasons. This season’s contests both look to be gym-fillers as both teams fight for a victory. Another rivalry that has been brewing has come from nearby Madonna University. ”Madonna is another local NAIA team that we have had a relationship with for several years. Their athletic director (Mr. Rizzo) was a mentor to us as we applied to the NAIA and we are grateful for the home-and-home opportunity,” said Pleasant.

Rounding out the Warriors schedule is a road trip to Maine to take on several USCAA foes. “We are once again traveling out east and will play Southern Maine and Central Maine. These are two well-coached USCAA teams,” Pleasant commented. “I have a ton of respect for both coaches and both programs and the trip to Maine will be a great experience for our guys. We will also play PSU-Fayette on this trip and this is another great opportunity to play another USCAA team and to play at the arena that hosts the USCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament.”

With a very challenging schedule on the horizon, Coach Pleasant is optimistic about his team’s chances this season. “Our ultimate goal is to improve as the year goes on and to have a chance to qualify for post-season play. Our schedule is very challenging, but I’m hopeful that with good senior leadership, we will find a way to negotiate the ups and downs and tough stretches. We are continuing on with the tradition that has been in place for years set by my Dad who always said, ‘We will play anyone, any night, anywhere.’ We will have the utmost respect for our opponents, but we wont fear any of them. We will also trust that the schedule will prepare us to be the best team we can be come late February,” Pleasant finished.

Sophomore SeasonStephan was a sophomore sensation as he started 30 of 32 games. He averaged 9.38 points per game and compiled 4.8 assists per game. Henning also was successful on the defensive side of the court with 70 steals on the season.

Junior SeasonIn his junior season, Henning continued to be leader both on and off the court. He led the Warriors with 180 assists in the regular season while averaging six points per game.

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “Stephen has surfaced as our team leader. We will count on him all year long for consistent and mature leadership. He is a very special player and is extremely valuable to our program. He has the ability to make everyone around him bet-ter and that’s the ultimate compliment. I have enjoyed coaching Steph and watching him grow and am grateful for everything he has given our program the last three years. Steph is a gamer and just wants to win. He will have a great senior year and most importantly he is someone who is going to have a tremendous amount of success in ‘life.’”

Junior SeasonTorey transferred to Rochester College after two tremendous years at Kirtland Community College under coach Ty McGregor. While at Kirtland Community College, Throop averaged over 16 points per game and was a threat from behind the 3-point arc. In his junior season, Throop was the team’s lead-ing 3-point shooter as he connected on 77 shots from behind the arc. Throop averaged just under nine

points per game coming off the bench for the Warriors.

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “Torey had the luxury of redshirting last year and I think that was a real benefit to him. He played solid minutes for us two years ago. He can shoot the ball very well from the perimiter and plays extremely hard. He has been a great addition to our program on-and-off the floor and I’m looking for him to have a solid year as a senior.”

2010-11 Stats

Sophomore SeasonRicky transferred to Rochester College from the University of Michigan-Dearborn where he was a full-time starter as a freshman. Doran averaged 5.5 rebounds per game and led the Warriors with 84 blocked shots during the 2008-09 season.

Junior Season After two stellar years of collegiate play, Doran continued to dominate in his junior season. He

led the nation in field goal percentage (.638), and was ranked number four in the nation in double doubles with eight in 30 games. Other stat categories Doran dominated were blocked shots (2.3p/g) where he was ranked third, and total rebounds (240) where he was ranked sixth.

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “I’ve been telling Rick all summer and all fall how good he can be. He has already established himself as one of the top inside players our program has had in several years, but he still has untapped potential. He might be the best RC has ever had in terms of the ability to block and alter shots. He runs the floor extremely well and can score inside. He has been a joy to coach and I have high expectations for him his senior year. We need him to be a leader and extend himself every time he takes the floor.”

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “Dramell redshirted last year after missing the previous semester before that. Therefore, He hasn’t played in about 18 months. He had a very good year in prac-tice and in terms of working on his game. He is relentelss inside and has developed the ability to play on the perimeter too. He has a chance to be dominant if he continues to put in the work. Even though he’s a junior I look to him for leadership since he’s been in the program for three years now.”

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “Sean had a very good season last year as a first year player in our program after transfering in. He plays extremely hard and is a good defender. He also has the ability to score the ball every night if we need him to do that. Sean is by far our best conditioned athlete and loves to play. He is coachable and I look to him to become more and more of a leader on and off the court. He does many things well and makes our team better.”

#24 Brad norman5’ 10” Junior Guard * Delta Community College

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “Brad really stood out to me this year during the recruiting season. He was always doing the little things that don’t necessarily show up on the stat sheet. He would reverse the ball, set screens, move well without the ball, and play hard on the defensive end. Brad shoots the ball very well from behind the arc and has the ability to come off screens and knock down shots. He also won all-defensive honors in the MI JUCO conference. He is a team guy who just wants to win and I look forward to having him in our program.”

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “Ian is a team guy. He’s been a joy to coach and he can play any position. He has a great basketall I.Q and has really learned our system. Ian battled injuries last year and had knee surgery over the summer but is getting back in shape. Ian is a “program guy” and great teammate. He can shoot the ball and knows how to get everyone involved.”

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “I’m excited to have Zef in our program. He is older and more mature than the typical sophomore in college. He has been sitting out a few years due to the fact that the junior college he played at eliminated the basketball program after the 2008-09 season. I see him as a pure point guard. He understands the importance of spacing, movement and distributing the basketball. He is excited to be playing again and comes highly recommend-ed by some of our former players who have played with him and have gotten to know him off the floor. He also performs well in the classroom as he’s transferring in a very good cumulative GPA. I’ve enjoyed recruiting him and am excited to watch him grow and develop here at RC.”

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “Raymond is a guy who can play multiple positions. He can shoot the ball from the perimeter and can also score inside. He played for Coach McGregor and was well coached at Kirtland CC. He had several ‘double doubles’ this past year and helped lead Kirtland to a successful season. We’re excited to have him and trust he will be a good addition to our team and program.”

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “Kourea is another guy that redshirted last year. I trust last year was good for him as he learned our system and worked on his game. He is strong and has the ability to both get to the basket and shoot from the perimeter making him a potentially tough match up. He also is a relentless defender and plays very hard. He’s tough nosed and extremely coachable. I’ve enjoyed having him in our program and think he has the chance to be a real impact player for us on both sides of the ball.”

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “Evan has a big body and we will look to him to help us inside. He has a nice shooting touch and can score around the basket. We’re excited to have him in our program and are hopeful that he can be a strong addition to our team, and help us inside.”

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “Marvin is a young man that we brought up last year from the freshman team for the national tournament. He really impressed me at practice leading up to the tournament and the way he carried himself while we were there. He is the consummate team player. He cares about the team and he just wants to do his part to help the team win. He plays incredibly hard and he is a top notch individual. He is a very good defender and plays with lots of energy. Marvin makes our program better and I look forward to him being a part of it the next three years.”

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “Ioannis comes highly recommended by some close friends I have in the coaching profession. He played two years at a junior college in Florida and was recruited by several school across the country. His coach in Greece and I have a mutual friend and we worked hard with his coach over there to get him to RC. He is a 6’6 guard that can handle the ball and shoots it very well from behind the arc. He also passes the ball very well and seems to have a high basketball I.Q. He was on the deans list at Florida State Community College and excels in the classroom. We think he will be a great fit, and we’re thrilled to have him in our program. ”

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “AJ is a young man that I have had my eye on all year. In my opin-ion, he is the ideal ‘Rochester College recruit.’ He performs well in the classroom, and he is the kind of person we want in our program in terms of his character. He comes from a ‘basketball family’ as his parents are coaches at the high school level and his sister (Kelly Burton) had a great career at RC as part of the women’s basketball program. Moreover, he has been well coached and played in a good junior college program led by Dale Voss. He shoots the ball very well from beyond the arc, he has a high basketball IQ and he strikes me as a “team first” kind of player. I’m thrilled that we were able to get him at RC and look forward to coaching him.”

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “Matt impressed me the first time I saw him play on film and then in person throughout his senior year. He is a tall point guard that sees the floor and distributes the ball. He also has the ability to score off the dribble and shoots the ball well from behind the arc. He impressed me with his ability to control a game without having to score though. He was well coached by Coach Buscemi and was a part of a winning program throughout high school. I look forward to watching Matt grow as a player, student and as a person.”

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “Anthony has the ability to dominate both the offensive and de-fensive glass. He plays hard, he’s long, and he’s not afraid to mix it up. He had multiple games in which he pulled down 18 rebounds or more. Anthony is skilled around the basket and is a high energy player. We have high expectations for him and look forward to watching him grow and develop. He has good upside, and he is hungry. He also comes highly recommended to us by one of our former players who lives on the west side of the state and has had numerous interactions with him. We’re excited to have Anthony in our program.”

Garth PLEASANTAthletic Director, Emeritus

Entering a modest space off of the singular narrow hallway of the Rochester College gym, one would hardly anticipate walking into the office of a college basketball legend like Garth Pleasant. However, once you step into the room and see the memorabilia, awards, metals and trophies that cover the space, you realize this place is in fact home to the winningest coach in Michigan college basketball history. In that moment, one can’t help but stand in awe of Pleasant’s career accomplishments.

Game balls from the 500th, 600th and 700th win sit poised in protective cases; a custom plaque honors his induction into the Basketball Caches Association Hall of Fame; no fewer than four Coach of the Year Awards from the BCAM, NSCAA and USCAA, along with a Career Achievement Award, hang on the walls; and photographs of his teams at national championships (Pleasant led the Warriors to nationals 28 times and brought home four victories) show off what most would consider the greatest moments of any coach’s career.

Yet sitting at his desk, Pleasant often ignores the accolades surrounding him. His most precious accomplishments of the basketball program he led at Rochester College for 34 years are his players. Pleasant can name his players, but often doesn’t recall their statistics or if they won a national championship. Instead, his memories show the evolution of the young men he once directed on the basketball court to the husbands, ministers, fathers, missionaries and upstanding citizens these

men are in the present day—no doubt because he touched their lives.

“I try to tell my players that I will know how good of a team we were in 15 years when I see how good of a husband, father and member of society they are,” said Pleasant.

Tyler Leipprandt, a player from 2004-2008, heard Pleasant speak this lesson and saw it in Pleasant’s example many times during his college years. “He not only showed us how to be great basketball players, he showed us how to be great people, Christians and fathers… which I am experiencing now,” said Leipprandt.

The yearning to see his players become great men and kingdom servants was perhaps the most definitive aspect of Pleasant’s coaching style. Simply put, it was never about the wins, championships or halls of fame. It was about the ministry and about the players.

The trust that Pleasant built into his player-coach relationships formed lasting friendships. Pleasant’s players opened up to him, allowing him to stay involved in their lives long after he was done being their official coach. How did Pleasant form such trust? He made sure every player knew they were important to him, and he was sure to spend time with his players, creating memories they’ll share forever.

Pleasant’s retirement from coaching last year marked a period of transition of roles for him. Moving from his position as the Men’s Head Basketball coach at RC, Pleasant now fills different shoes: Chair of the Department of Physical Education, Professor of Physical Education, and Director of Athletics, Emeritus. Though he now works off the court, his mission and desire to invest in the students around him hasn’t changed.
