HEAD COACH DENISE ST. PIERRE

Experience is the best teacher...

Denise St.Pierre is entering her 20th season as the Penn State head wom-en’s golf coach. St. Pierre draws from her experience as a collegiate golfer as well as a PGA teaching professional to help her student-athletes reach their full potential.

In addition to coaching the Nittany Lions, St. Pierre has also coached in international competitions throughout her coaching career.

In August of 2004, St. Pierre helped coach the U.S. team at the World University Games in Thailand where they won the gold medal. Penn State’s Katie Futcher captured the individual title in that event.

In June of 1999, St. Pierre was selected by the NGCA to coach the U.S. team at the U.S./Japan Collegiate Golf Championships in Chiba, Japan, where the Americans captured their fourth consecutive title.

In its February 2002 issue, Golf for Women magazine named St. Pierre to its “Top 50 Women PGA/LPGA Instructors” list.

St. Pierre has served as President of the National Golf Coaches Asso-ciation (NGCA). While president, she led the membership in volunteer work in New Orleans in relief of Hurricane Katrina. At the annual NGCA convention that had to be moved from New Orleans to Tahoe, Nevada, St. Pierre introduced an idea to the membership that called for as many golf programs as possible around the country to conduct fundraisers to raise money for the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity. Through the ef-forts of the Nittany Lion women’s golf team as well as those by more than 30 other women’s golf programs around the country, the NGCA raised $60,000 to build a home for a displaced family in New Orleans. The efforts of the NGCA culminated last June when St. Pierre and several of her col-leagues traveled to New Orleans and volunteered to help finish building the house that they sponsored through the Habitat for Humanity.

St. Pierre has served as the assistant coach of the United States women’s golf team at the World University Games held in Torino, Italy for the sec-ond time after also serving as the coach in 2004. She led the team to a gold medal for the second straight time as well.

A native of Syracuse, N.Y., St. Pierre chose Penn State for its academic and athletic reputation. As a Nittany Lion herself, St. Pierre’s team won several team titles as well as qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

After her graduation in 1983, St. Pierre completed an apprenticeship with the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) at the Innisbrook Resort in Tarpon Springs, Fla. In 1985, she returned to the University as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s golf teams under Mary Kennedy-Zierke. She earned 1991 Mid-Atlantic/East Region Coach-of-the-Year honors.

From 2000-2004, St. Pierre served as secretary for the National Golf Coaches Association, prior to becoming the president of the NGCA follow-ing her time as secretary. St. Pierre has been a guest lecturer for the PGA teaching and coaching summit as well as the National Golf Foundation.

A Class A member of the PGA, the Nittany Lion coach has taught in

New York and Florida and is currently the director of instruction at the Penn State golf courses. During the winter, St. Pierre teaches a golf con-ditioning class for the local community, as well as instructing health and human development classes at Penn State. She also serves as the director for the Penn State summer golf schools, and co-directs five junior camps. In addition to all that, St. Pierre is the author of Golf Fundamentals, an instructional book for recreational players.

St. Pierre offers more than just experience to her athletes; she brings with her knowledge of the sport and familiarity with the University. She had a very successful career at Penn State and looks forward to more growth and success for the Nittany Lion women. St. Pierre wants to provide life guid-ance as well as athletic guidance.

“It is about them being balanced and how we can encompass academics and personal growth in order for our players to reach their potential,” St. Pierre says.

Players face challenges both on and off the course that affect how they play their game. As a coach, she believes she must be aware of those factors in order to help the player cope on the course.

“You have to know first what you want,” she adds. “I believe every player has more potential than they realize. It is my job to help draw that potential out of them.”

St. Pierre wants her players to graduate from the program not only better golfers but also better people.

HEAD COACH DENISE ST. PIERRE

“In order to uphold the Penn State tradition of academic and athletic excellence,” says St. Pierre, “we provide each player with a safe environ-ment to play the game at the highest level while balancing her time in the classroom.”

Every coach has a different strategy on how to run a team. Denise St. Pierre’s is not just centered around golf but around education and dreams.

“I try to be supportive of student-athletes in both their athletic and aca-demic endeavors while here at Penn State,” says the 1991 Mid-Atlantic/East Region Coach-of-the-Year.

She understands that golf is not her student-athletes’ entire life. Each student-athlete is also at Penn State to receive an education and a life experience.

“My main job as a coach is to discuss what our [team’s] dreams and aspi-rations are while we’re here...my goals are to help them reach theirs...I am a vehicle to allow my players to get where they want to go.”

She wants her players to improve themselves in all aspects of life- as a competitor, an athlete and a person- during their time at Penn State.

This Class A teaching professional hopes that her players can develop “using my background as a player...I can display the right attitude and the right actions that I want them to follow.”

St. Pierre prepares her players for tournaments, both mentally and physi-cally. The most important thing for her is to have as much information about a tournament, including climate, environment, grass, layout of the golf course and the competition.

Physically, she has her players practice the things that are most likely to occur at those sites.

“The more you know about the situation, the better you can prepare yourself both mentally and physically. The fewer the surprises, the more confident we can be,” says the Nittany Lion head coach.

Pearson begins first season as Nittany Lion assistant...

Abby Pearson, a long-time professional golfer and coach, is entering her first season as an assis-tant coach for Denise St. Pierre and the Penn State women’s golf team. She was added to the staff in summer 2011.

A Florence, S.C., native, Pearson comes to Penn State after serving as an assistant coach for Ball State (2000-03) and Western Michigan (2003-05), as well as playing golf professionally and at the col-legiate level.

“I am confident that Coach Pearson will bring much to our team and help each of our golfers in their pursuits both on and off the golf course,” said St. Pierre, who will enter her 20th season as head coach in 2011-12. “Coach Pearson was a top colle-giate player at the University of Tennessee, as well a professional player for (eight) years. Her experienc-es and knowledge of what it takes to be a champion bring much value to our team.”

Most recently, Pearson served as a golf consultant, helping to set up numerous charity golf events as well as serving as the tournament director for the Teva/Duramed Championship in the LPGA Futures Tour. Before that, from 2006-09, Pearson took on the duties of the marketing manager for Duramed Pharmaceuticals, sponsoring many golf events.

From 1992-94, Pearson played collegiate golf at Tennessee, where she was a member of the team that helped launch the women’s golf program at the university. She became the program’s first-ever women’s golf All-American when she was named to the second-team in 1993. Also in that season, Pear-son was named Co-SEC Freshman of the Year.

As a professional golfer, Pearson joined the Fu-ture’s Tour in 1995 after just two years in college. In her professional career, she had three tournament victories. In 1997, she won the Gulf Telephone Fu-ture’s Classic and, in 1998, she won both the Pacific Bell Future’s Classic and the MedHealth Wellness Centers Future’s Classic. She also competed in the 2003 U.S. Women’s Open Championship and re-corded 22 top-10 finishes during her eight-year professional career.

In 2000, she returned to school and attended Ball State to earn her bachelor’s degree in communica-tion studies. She stayed there until 2003, serving as an assistant coach to the Ball State program while finishing up her schooling. Following her stint at Ball State, Pearson was a member of the Western Michigan coaching staff from 2003-05, where she assisted with every aspect of the program.

While still in high school, she recorded two South Carolina Girls’ State Amateur Championships (1990, 1992). In 2011, she became a TPI Certified Golf Instructor.

As head coach Denise St. Pierre enters her 20th season at the helm, the Penn State women’s golf team will have large shoes to fill this coming season after losing four seniors, who tallied 301 rounds of experience between them. Giulia Carando led with 97 rounds played, with Brianna Malcolmson following close behind with 93. The team also loses former Big Ten Golfer of the Week Gia Fanelli, as well as Victoria Arena.

The Nittany Lions do, however, return an abundance of experience on the roster. Though the team has no seniors, it returns four student-athletes who notched more than 20 rounds last season alone. Between the four of them, they bring 102 rounds of experience from last year. Of the four returners who played more than 20 rounds last season, each of them has finished in the top 10 of a tournament at least once in their careers.

The team improved dramatically from the 2009-10 season, shaving nearly 10 strokes-per-round as a team off of last season’s average. In the 2009-10 season, the Nittany Lions carded an average of 317.7 strokes per round. Last season, the final number was 307.8.

Junior Emily Ransone brings 57 rounds of experience back to the team, followed by classmate Hanule Seo, who has 49 rounds under her belt in two seasons.

Ransone leads the field after posting a spectacular sophomore season, improving on a great freshman year. She finished sixth in school history on the season-round average list with a 76.2. Ransone tied her career-best round of 71 twice in the 2010-11 season. Her best finish came when she took second place at the Nittany Lion Invitational. This was tied for a team-best as Gia Fanelli matched that score once. She was one of three golfers to participate in all 29 rounds for the Nittany Lions and had four top-10 finishes on the season.

Ellen Ceresko made an immediate impact for Penn State as a freshman. She fol-lowed Ransone with the second-best average on the team of players with more than 20 rounds played as she accumulated a 78.3 in 23 rounds played. She had the best finish on the team in two tournaments and earned a tie for fifth place at the Star-mount Fall Classic where she shot a 147. This tied her for the 10th-best two-round score in school history.

Hanule Seo also returns for her junior campaign after having a second-straight successful season. She played all 29 rounds with Ransone and had an average of 78.5, third best on the team. Seo had the best finish on the team in one tournament and tied for 16th place at the Nittany Lion Invitational. She shaved nearly a stroke off of her freshman year’s average.

Sophomore Christina Vosters also made an impact as a freshman. She participated in 21 rounds, one of six players to compete in more than 20. She made the most of them, finishing with the best score on the team twice in seven events. She recorded a 305 at the Big Ten Championships, good for a tie for the fourth-best four-round score in school history.

Jamie Lavin and Courtney Kordes also return for their junior seasons with experi-ence. They will be joined by incoming freshmen Elyse Archambault, Katlyn Elliott Catherine Herrera and Erin Michel. The four incoming freshmen bring a long list of high school accolades to contribute to a rising Penn State women’s golf program.

The Nittany Lions also boast the addition of assistant coach Abby Pearson, a for-mer professional golfer on the Future’s Tour, as well as an assistant coach for both Ball State and Western Michigan.

Penn State will host two tournaments this season with the first being the Nittany Lion Invitational from Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at Penn State’s Blue Course. The program will also hold the 2012 NCAA East Regional Championships for the first time. The NCAA Regional Championships will be held from May 10-12.

SEASON OUTLOOK

Junior Emily Ransone returns this season after two successful seasons.

Junior Hanule Seo will use experience in the 2011-12 season.

Sophomore Emily Ransone (Hilliard, Ohio) finished one stroke behind Vosters with a 306 (79-78-73-76), giving her 25th place for the tournament.

Freshman Ellen Ceresko (Jefferson Township, Pa.) carded her best round of the tournament with a 78 in the fourth round. She finished the tournament with a 319. Sophomore Hanule Seo matched Ceresko’s 319. They both finished in a tie for 54th place. Senior Giulia Carando (Torino, Italy) shot a 77 in the final around, a tourna-ment best for her. She finished with a score of 340. Senior Gia Fanelli (West Palm Beach, Fla.) rounded out the Penn State field with a score of 343 for the tournament.

No. 18 Michigan State claimed its first Big Ten title since 2007 with a 28-over-par 1,180 (306-290-295-289). They edged the Purdue Boilermakers, who were the defending Big Ten champions and ranked No. 4 nationally, by five strokes. Purdue’s Numa Gulyanamitta won the individual Big Ten title, carding her third straight round of 71 today. This left her with a 1-under-par 287 in the tournament. She topped Northwestern’s Lauren Weaver by three strokes.

NITTANY LION INVITATIONAL

Penn State’s Nittany Lion Invitational has been played 35 times since the tournament’s inception in 1974. Penn State has won the title 19 times. Only 12 other schools have claimed the team title. Penn State’s last title came in 2010 as the Nittany Lions ended a four-year drought. Three of the last six in-dividual medalists have also come from the Nittany Lions. Maggie Lester won the indi-vidual title in 2005 while Evelyn Paik won the individual title in 2006. Emily Ransone became the most recent winner, claiming the title in 2009.
