Marquette basketball student-athletes separate themselves from the rest throughpersonal individual instruction.

Marquette Basketball's Skill Development Program is designed tohelp a player show constant improvement in different areas of his game whilehelping to assure that he is staying ahead of the competition.

Marquette players are reminded on a consistent basis,

“every day in every way, get better and better” and“players are made, not born.”

Perhaps no player signifies the staff’s ability to develop talent better than

junior guard JUNIOR CADOUGAN.Cadougan’s development is even more impressive considering he suffered anachilles injury during conditioning prior to the start of the 2009-10 campaign. The Toronto, Ontario, native took over the starting point guard duties in 2010-11and has seen his contribution increase each year.

BOOTCAMP2011

T he Marquette University men's basketball team concluded its “Boot Camp" last Fall, cappingover a week's worth of intense conditioning at the Al McGuire Center.

“Boot Camp” consisted grueling conditioning work twice a day, with all results based on stricttime standards. Each of the players who participated in the sessions worked together as a team and if one player didn't make the time, no one on the team received credit for completing that segment.

At the conclusion of the final day, head coach Buzz Williams distributes official “Boot Camp” T-shirts. Only those who have completed the grueling program are allowed to wear the shirts.

STUDENT-ATHLETEPERFORMANCESports MedicineThe sports medicine department places it emphasis on functional/integrated training. This form of training allows us to

focus on the complete body of the student-athlete, while focusing primarily on core strengthening and core stability. This newly focused area of sports medicine is likely to minimize the occurrence of overuse injuries, poor muscular control and muscle imbalances.

As a result, this allows the student-athlete to perform and train at optimum levels.

Two words have served as the foundation

for fourth-year head coach BUZZ WILLIAMS’

program at Marquette University since he

was officially hired on April 8th, 2008

CHARACTER REVEALED.

Because of the values and work ethic

contained within that philosophy,

the Golden Eagles were able to add

"Sweet Sixteen" in 201011 as another two-word extension

to the squad's impressive list of

accomplishments during his tenure.

Williams has guided Marquette to three-straightNCAA Championship appearances (six overall), including the program's 14th participation in theregional semifinals last season. Continuing theUniversity's proud tradition of success on the court, MU has remained a fixture in the national rankings, claimed wins overmultiple nationally ranked teams andbeen extremely competitive in the BIGEAST Conference. The squad has alsoramped up its community service effortsunder Williams' guidance and collectedacademic recognition since he assumedthe reigns of the program prior to the2008-09 campaign.

Marquette claimed 22 victories in 2010-11, including a road victory at eventualnational champion Connecticut and a quarterfinal appearance in the leaguetourney, en route to being tabbed a No. 11 seed in the NCAA's. The Golden Eagles posted upset wins over No. 6 seed Xavier and No. 3 seed Syracuse toclaim a spot in the round of 16, which marked the furthest the team had advanced since 2003. Senior forward Jimmy Butler garnered all-conference accolades for the second-straight year and junior guard Darius Johnson-Odomearned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team.

The team's character was tested from start to finish in 2009-10, beginning withlow preseason expectations from national pundits and concluding with a heart-breaking postseason loss. No team in the nation played in more one-possessiongames than MU, but that didn't stop the squad from collecting the program'sfifth-straight NCAA Championship appearance and 20-win season. Marquettefinished 22-12 overall, including an 11-7 mark in the BIG EAST Conference, whichwas good enough for fifth-place in the 16-team league.

Lazar Hayward (Second Team All-BIG EAST) finished second all-time in scoringat MU and four of the program's top-10 all-time scorers have graduated withinthe past three seasons. Junior forward Jimmy Butler was one of the most improved players in the country and as a result was tabbed honorable mentionall-league.

Williams directed MU to a 25-10 overall record in 2008-09, which included aschool-record 12 BIG EAST victories. The Golden Eagles advanced to the secondround of the NCAA Championship and were ranked among the nation's top-25teams the entire campaign. A pair of players, Jerel McNeal and WesleyMatthews, claimed all-league accolades and McNeal also earned All-Americahonors.

Off the court, Williams and his staff assembled a consensus top-25 recruitingclass in each of the first two years of his tenure, including a group rated as highas No. 1 in the country by HoopScoopOnline.com (2008-09).

The program's community service efforts have also reached new heights underWilliams, highlighted by "Buzz's Bunch." This group, founded by Williams, focuses on providing opportunities for special needs children to attend gamesand summer camps. The Golden Eagles have also continued and strengthenedtheir long-standing relationships with the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin aswell as the Special Olympics.

In 2007-08, Williams served as an assistant coach with the Golden Eagles in hisfirst season at Marquette. MU concluded the year 25-10 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003.

Eddie House (Arizona St.), Jeff Pendergraph (Arizona St.), Kenny Thomas (NewMexico), Wesley Matthews (Marquette) and Lazar Hayward (Marquette) also continued their respective careers in the National Basketball Association.

Off the court, Benford helped the Huskers make significant strides on the recruiting trail. Nebraska's eight-man recruiting class for 2007 was ranked amongthe top 25 in the nation by at least three major recruiting services, includingESPN.com's Bob Gibbons (21st), CSTV.com's Van Coleman (12th) and HoopScoopOnline.com's Clark Francis (5th).

Prior to Nebraska, Benford served on the Arizona State bench as an assistant coachfor his first six years in Tempe. He was then named associate head coach for his lasttwo seasons with the Sun Devils. During his time at Arizona State (1999 to 2006),Benford recruited and coached Pac-10 Players of the Year Ike Diogu (2005, consensus All-America) and Eddie House (2000), and also brought in all-freshman

team performer Jeff Pendergraph in 2006 (All-Pac-10 also). Benford helped the SunDevils to four postseason appearances during his tenure, including gaining a spotin the second round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament.

Before joining the ASU staff, Benford spent six seasons as an assistant coach atNew Mexico (1993 to 1998). He helped New Mexico to five NCAA Tournament bidswhile winning 73.2 percent of its games (139-51 record). New Mexico picked up a pair of Western Athletic Conference tournament titles (1993 and 1996) and a regular-season championship (1994) with Benford on the sideline. During his stintwith the Lobos, Benford coached the top four scorers in program history, includingall-time leading scorer Kenny Thomas, who Benford recruited to New Mexico.

Benford finished his playing career at Texas Tech in 1986 and during his playingdays, he helped the Red Raiders to two Southwest Conference Tournament titles(1985, 1986) and the SWC regular-season championship in 1985. He was an all-conference pick as a senior and was the league tournament most valuable player. He earned his bachelor's in physical education from TTU in 1992.

A native of Hobbs, N.M., Benford was a 1986 fourth-round NBADraft selection by the Boston Celtics. He played professionallyin Holland during the 1986-87 season.

As a prep all-star, Benford was a Converse All-Americanand the New Mexico Player of the Year after pouring in 27.5 points per game as a senior. He led Hobbs to the state title in his final season, earning MVPhonors of the state championship tournamentafter posting 29 points in the title game.

“I am so thankful that Tony has been here our entire time. I anticipate his tenure here is close to an end, because he is more than deservingof his own chance to run a program. I have learned a great deal from him as acoach during our time together, but have learned even more by closely watching his daily example of who he is as a person and as a professional. Thatexample permeates throughout our program and has a positive impact for every-one. I have never known, seen, or heard of anyone during my career who is aswhole-heartedly committed to his profession as Tony is. He is a professional inevery sense of the word and his character as a person matches that same level. I stand at attention in respect for that and will forever be grateful for what he hasgiven our program.”

The 2011-12 campaign will mark the fourth for David "Aki"Collins with the Marquette University men's basketball program.

Recognized as one of the top up-and-coming assistantcoaches in the country with his participation in the Villa 7event in 2010 and 2011, Collins’ coaching effortshave already helped guide over 20 formerplayers to collegiate success and participation in the professional ranks.

During his three-year tenure with MU, five different players have earned six all-conference accolades, including All-BIG EAST Second Team performerDarius Johnson-Odom.

Collins arrived in Milwaukee after working as an assistantcoach at fellow Jesuit institution Fairfield University for twoseasons under Ed Cooley. Previous to Fairfield, Collins spent three seasons at Marshall University. During hisstay at Marshall (2003-06), he assisted with the program's transition between con-ferences. The Thundering Herd placed several student-athletes on the ConferenceUSA and Mid-American Conference all-league teams.

The Brooklyn native came to Marshall after three seasons as an assistant coach atHoward University, where he served under head coach Frankie Allen. Before hisarrival at Howard, the program posted just three victories in the previous two seasons. After winning 10 games during the 2000-01 campaign, the Bison won 18games in 2001-02 and advanced to the conference championship game.

Collins helped sign two preseason MEAC Player of the Year candidates in AkiThomas (2002) and Kyle Williams (2003), both of whom transferred to Howard fromthe University of Colorado, following Collins when he made the trip back East. He also helped recruit 2003 MEAC Player of the Year, Ronnie Williams.

Prior to Howard, Collins spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Colorado, oneyear as a volunteer and two as a full-time assistant. His responsibilities with theBuffalos included coordinating film exchange and participating in on-campus recruiting activities. He coached Jaquay Walls while in Boulder, who went on to become a second-round NBA draft pick by the Indiana Pacers in 2000.

He began his collegiate playing career at Morehouse College, before transferring to Clark Atlanta University for his sophomore year. He prepped at LaSalle Academy in New York, where he led his team to a 26-1 record and the New YorkCity championship as a sophomore. LaSalle earned a top 20 preseason rankingprior to his senior campaign.

He earned a bachelor's degree in communications from Clark Atlanta in 1997. While completing his degree, he worked as a project manager for three years at Electronic Data Systems (EDS). During his tenure with EDS, his supervisory position oversaw nearly 100 employees.

“Our staff has continued to evolve and grow during our time together and Aki has been at the front of that evolution. Like any other staff, time has a way of maturing you and making you better. The hardest part of growth, in my opinion, is to be able tostay the same person, as you grow as a professional. Aki has done that and I have great confidence that will continue to be a part of his character. He is involved with each aspect of our program and sometimes in ways that I am not always aware of. That speaks to the teammate he is to everyone on our staff and his willingness to always help, even though I may not always know. He has become agreat friend and confidant during our tenure together and I believe bright things are coming his way.”

He was named the 2003 National Junior College Athletic Association Region XIV Coach of the Year after leading the Ponies to the regular season conference championship.

During his career, Monarch has helped guide 42 players to NCAA Division I programs from the junior college ranks and nearly 20 to all-conference accolades. He also coached the all-time scoring leader in junior college history, Omar Thomas.

Monarch, who received his master's degree from Baylor in 1991 after earning hisundergraduate degree from Mississippi Valley State in 1986, has also served as an associate head coach at Tennessee State (1999-2000) and Kentucky Wesleyan(1996-98).

At Kentucky Wesleyan, Monarch was part of a program that reached the 1998 NCAA Division II national championship game. He also recruited and helped develop four players who would later be first-team All-Americans. Two of thosestandouts became National Players of the Year.

Monarch served as an assistant coach at Grambling State in 1998-99.

He started his career at McLennan Community College in 1993 and coached therefor three seasons. He then went on to spend three seasons at Navarro College.

“Monarch has been with me throughout my tenure as a head coach and selfishly, I hope I am able to say that for the rest of my tenure. In many respects we are opposite, but in our core beliefs, we are exactly the same. He is extremely healthy for me because his thoughtprocess is typically opposite of mine and his views constantly make me have to see things from a different lens, and because of that, it has forcedme to grow. His skill set is unlike anyone I have ever been around and unless you are around him over a long period of time, you can’t truly understand his value. Because I have known him since I was a teenager, my trust level in who he is as a person and as a coach is incrediblyhigh and I am very grateful for that relationship - the energy, commitment, and unselfishness he brings to our program.”

His career winning percentage also placed him in the top-10 percent among active coaches in the country.

Lundy arrived in Milwaukee after serving for six seasons as head coach at High Point. He compiled an overall record of 96-87 and guided the program to numerous individual and team accolades. During his tenure, the Panthers setschool records for NCAA Division I wins in a season, conference victories, roadwins and RPI ranking.

He was also tabbed the nation’s top rookie coach that season by CollegeInsider.comafter his team posted a 13-win improvement from the previous year.

His tenure included a pair of NCAA Division IIElite Eight appearances and one trip to the Final Four (2003). He recruited andcoached five All-America selections, including the 2003 national player of the year(Spencer Ross).

Lundy was tabbed the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2001 and was also named the NCAA East Region Coach of the Year that season. In the classroom during his decade as a head coach, 90 percent of the student-athletes under Lundy earned their degrees and 100 percent were on track to graduate entering their final season of eligibility. Highly involved in the profession and the community, he has served on NCAA and NABC committeeswhile also working with the YMCA and Boys & Girls Club.

“I am very grateful for the work and the impact that Bart has had on our program thus far, but more importantly, I appreciate the loyal friend Bart has become to me and my family. Throughout my entire career, I am not sure I have built a relationship with a coach, whose personality and skill set, is as unique as his. His teaching style commands great respect, not only in what he is teaching it, but in how. His willingnessto share that wisdom with me specifically, has expedited my growth as a coach. He is constantly studying subtle nuances and facets of the game that as he brings them to our attention, pay huge dividends. He will be a head coach again soon, but his impact to our program on and off the floorwill always be beneficial.”

The 2011-12 campaign will mark the fourth with the Marquette men's basketball program for Brad Autry, who serves as Coordinator of Student-Athlete Development.

In his role, Autry focuses his efforts on coordinating and monitoring the daily schedules of the players currently inthe program. His administrative duties will include managing class schedules and study hall attendance, scheduling individual and team community service projects and mentoring programs and coordinatingstudent-athlete documentation as it relates to NCAA compliance. He alsoserves as director of the program's youth summer camp program.

Prior to Dekaney, Autry spent four seasons as an assistant coach at UALR. He wasthe final hire of Steve Shields' original staff and played an integral role in the earlysuccess of the Shields era at UALR. The program claimed back-to-back divisional titles (2003-04 & 2004-05) in the Sun Belt Conference for the first time in school history and the roster during Autry's tenure featured several all-conference performers, including the league's freshman of the year and the nation’s leading rebounder in 2007..

Autry was an assistant coach at Tulsa under Bill Self when the Golden Hurricanewon the Western Athletic Conference championship in 2000 with a school-record 32wins and a No. 9 national ranking while advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight.

Before his time at Tulsa, Autry was an assistant coach for five seasons at Baylor in Waco, Texas. While at Baylor, Autry coached 1998 NBA first-round pick Brian Skinner for four years and helped the Bears to a school-record 11 consecutive wins(11-1 non-conference record) in 1996-97. Baylor finished 18-12 that season, its first

in the Big 12 Conference. Baylor's 1996 recruiting class was ranked as high as sixthin the nation, and the 1997-98 team recorded the school's best conference recordand the highest league finish (fifth) since Baylor joined the Big 12. That finish remained the program’s best for 10 seasons.

As a prep player, Autry was an Oklahoma all-state performer in football, basketballand track before continuing his playing career at Northwestern Oklahoma StateUniversity, where he graduated with his bachelor's degree in 1991.

While at NWOSU, Autry was a four-year basketball letterwinner (helped squad toleague title in 1988, the program’s first in 40 years), as well as an all-conferenceand all-district performer and the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1990. Autry began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at University of Central Oklahoma, where he earned his master's degree in education, and was a part of a Lone Star Conference champi-onship and the NCAA Division II national tournament in 1993.

“The older I get, the more set I become in my peculiar ways. Having someone who has known me over the last 20 years is morecomforting than I can explain. My relationship with Autry has evolved in ways that are extremely unique in a business like this and my trust levelin Autry grows with each passing year. Like me, because he has had varying titles and has been employed at multiple schools, which are not always immediately recognizable, his talent has not always been noticed or appreciated the way it should have been. That is not the case here. His responsibilities touch all facets of our program and in every area his impact has been positive. He has helped stretch me in ways thathave made me grow and the byproduct of that, has helped infiltrate our program in every way.”

“In one way or another, Barb is at the core of literally everything that happens in our program thatis not basketball specific. Her responsibilities and title have continually evolved during my tenurebecause of her talent and skill set, and because she has earned it. She allows everyone in our office to become more productive within their role, because of her ability to endure all that is thrown in her direction. Of all the people I have worked with and known in our industry, I have never been around someone who has the management ability to handle successfully all that she does, considering all of the differing types of people she has to deal with. “There is not an exact way to quantify what Todd means to our program on a daily basis. From a coaching standpoint, he is the only member of our staff who has the ability to coach ourguys year-around, and because of that, his value is immeasurable. He takes great pride in hiscraft, and because of the competitiveness he brings to work every day, our guys are learningmuch more than just how to become stronger. “Without a doubt, the most unheralded, yet most vital person to our organization is Adrienne. Theonly public recognition she receives is this quote in the media guide, but she is deserving of farmore than that. Along with her support staff, the work required of all of them, mirrors the sameamount of time, we as coaches must be accountable for. Within our culture, our core purpose isto make sure that our players’ experiences while here has positive meaning for the rest of their life and Adrienne’s diligence in her area of responsibility is an integral part of that experience. As important as the experience is, I believe that a diploma changes their life, for the rest of theirlife, and her impact in that regard is monumental. Our entire program is grateful for all she does.”

“Every time Jamie is in my line of sight, I always try to turn the opposite direction, so he doesn’t see the glow illuminating from my face. I am so proud of his achievements thus far, and in an almost fatherly –type way, I know it is only the beginning. His growth in our program has been daily since his arrival. Just like he was as a player, he quietly allows me to add more and more to his level of responsibilities, and handles them with a tenacity that demands respect. It appears at times as though he is unassuming, but his true character is one that is paying attention to the most minor details at all times, and is constantly seeking ways to improve.”

Marquette’s All-America selections are determined by the NCAA publication “Men’s Basketball’s Finest,”which recognizes each of the teams listed as an official squad.

Meminger (1970-71), Lee (1977-78) and Wade (2002-03) are considered consensus selections based on a scoring system used by the NCAA.

From Marquette Head Coach Al McGuire:(immediately following game) “I think they fell apart in the second half. We hung in there.” (How do youfeel?) “Emotionally drained. I’m pleased for the guys. It doesn’t seem real. Ya know, you think aboutsomething like this, but ... I’ve always been an alley fighter. I don’t usually get into the silk lace situations. It seems like it is preordained, but I don’t like to use the words of TV announcers, the cliches.”

(in the interview room) “We put in the four corners just yesterday in the hour allotted us for practice. We figured to run it and look for the good shot, keeping the big men underneath. For a while, both teamswere playing a chess game.”

“I was not emotional until a five-second count triggered me. I trigger easily. As a coach, you have to beconstantly alert. Right now, I feel washed out.

“Once the avalanche came and we were tied, I tried to stop the avalanche by delays and I called timeouts. Usually we try to do it by contactlens timeouts or something like that. You have to stop the momentum no matter what.”

“At the end of the game, I sat there and thought of all the locker rooms, the dirty jocks, the PALS, and the other things that a New Yorker streetfighter knows when growing up.”

From Marquette Player Bo Ellis:(On McGuire’s last game) “It’s a super way to go, for him and for us. I’m glad for him, I’m gladfor me, I’m glad for the team, I’m glad for the people of Milwaukee and even for those who saidwe wouldn’t get this far.”

From Marquette Player Butch Lee:(On what it is like playing for McGuire) “It’s not bad for the older guys. They know what to expect. For the freshmen, it gets rough. You have to get some good ear plugs.”

From North Carolina Head Coach Dean Smith:“We went into the four corners to get them out of a zone. That’s a great zone with 6-9 players- Bo Ellis, Bernard Toone and Jerome Whitehead - in there. (Bruce) Buckley went in for alayup and either Bo or Whitehead blocked it. Then they went into their delay game. They hitall of their free throws down the stretch. Of course, that is what we did to get here.

From North Carolina Player Phil Ford:“I don’t want anybody to quote me as saying that my elbow affected my play out there or costus the game. But, I feel that I have been useless to the team for the last two games. Anytimethat you play for the national championship, that should give you enough to win.”

From North Carolina Player Mike O’Koren:“I knew that we were going to come back, but I didn’t expect it to be that quick. And I knewthat once we got the lead, we would go into the four corners and get them to chase us. But Marquette played the four corners smart. They laid back and didn’t foul us.”
