Coming up at the May Meeting (don’t forget--no April Meeting!): New member, Dave Sorensen, will be speaking at our monthly meeting on May 15. He'll be sharing a bit of history of how he developed his self-taught approach to watercolors, via childhood in the Caribbean, world travels, and in particular his concentration on Australian landscapes. Dave spent a year touring in a VW bus all around Australia in 1975, then made several trips back in recent years. He has featured his Aussie artwork in two major solo shows at UVA and in NY. You can get an advance glimpse through his portfolio of Ayers Rock, which is part of the Members' Portfolio Exhibit at d'ART Center.

Dave with “Rocky Cove”

“Sunrise, Honeymoon Bay”

“Chiki Pair”

Hereʼs where you can see more of Daveʼs paintings: The Central Virginia Watercolor Guild's "A Little Light Magic," The Arts Center in Orange, VA (through April 30, 2011), and of course our own Tidewater Art Alliance Members' Portfolio Exhibit – 2011 at the d'ART Center, Norfolk, VA (through April 10),

Submitting items for Artline Please be sure to include “Artline” in the subject line of your message! (...unless you want your message to get lost in the tons of email your editor receives every day.) If your message doesn’t say “Artline” it might get rejected as trash! Each photo needs its own caption, in its own email. Please send each photo, properly captioned, in a separate email. Use another email for each additional photo, along with its caption. That way your Editor won’t get photos mixed up with the wrong caption. What’s a proper caption? Please write a full sentence, identifying the principal people or art pieces in the photo, with an explanation of what’s going on (which event, award, etc.) And do include “Artline” in your subject line! Please!!

Volunteers are always needed! (save $20 off next year’s member fee)

A Note about Kudos Submissions:

In order for Kudos Korner to applaud TAA Members, it is important for

individual artists to submit their own good deeds! The information used in

Call for Artists and Educational articles are based on submissions and

documented hearsay. Submissions can be made via email to

[email protected] by the 15th of every month for the next edition of

our Artline Newsletter. Please be sure to include “Artline” in the

subject line of your message!

Don’t be bashful! Won a prize? Got into a national show? Been

selected as a juror?

Let us hear about your art accomplishments.

We support, develop and promote visual arts in Hampton Roads.

A note from Rieneke Leenders about the 2011 TAA BOOK: Here is what I need from all TAA members who have exhibited in this 2010-2011 season: Please send me jpegs of at least 1MB (1000KB) size of (only!) the work that you had or will have in a TAA show between August 2010 and July 2011. Rename the JPEG: Your last name first, then your first name, then title of your work, medium, size, and indicate which TAA show it was in: (mem for members show, min for miniature show, port for portfolio show, fund for red cross show, theme for theme show) Please help me save hours of work by doing this according to these specifications. If I will have to do this for you and everyone else, imagine at least 2 minutes times about 300 pictures… And please check your jpeg size before you send: 1MB and up can be used on a full page, but any jpeg under 200KB can only be printed postage stamp size! Send to: [email protected] From the winners, I would also like to get: A headshot, so we will be able to put a face with your name. A bio, resume, or artist statement. Remember, winners win a full page in the book, it is a chance to promote yourself. You can also add your web address, your blog or whatever you think will help to make yourself visible. From the Exhibition Chairs I would like to get a bio or resume and the jurors statement from the juror of the show you organized. Please help to make this book a success by your full cooperation. This is all I need you to do. I will do the rest, but if some of you don’t participate, the book, and with that the reputation of your organization will be disadvantaged. And here is the link to last year’s book: http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/1566147 Thank you, Rieneke

Kudos Korner Bruce Priceʼs painting selected for magazine cover: The February 2011 issue of "Computer Graphics" magazine featured Bruce's digital art (shown below) on the cover, and carried an article about his contrarian approach to art, education, etc. in a profile called "Against the Grain." Bruce's art--three styles--can be seen on his site ArtNorfolk.com.

Dave Sorensonʼs works accepted for several shows: Solo exhibition- Bronxville Women's Club, (6-25 Mar 2011), Bronxville, NY; Small Works: Miniature Art by Hampton Roads Artists, The Charles H.
