Why: Last week, they moved up two spots despite only beating the Pokes. No such luck this week after losing on Saturday to CSU and Wednesday to SDSU by a score of 68-62 in both games.

Why: Since their loss at The Pit on Jan. 29, the Cougars have won four straight games. Thanks to the assistance of triple-teaming, Jim-mer Fredette has discovered the third aspect of the triple threat—passing.A 13-point victory at the Marriott Center over the Utes didn’t come close to matching the wow factor of their first game, but the Utes were determined not to get embarrassed again and played as well as they have all year.
Why: Just two weeks ago, I proclaimed SDSU king of the No. 2 for the rest of the year, barring a SARS outbreak in Southern California. Fourteen days later, San Diego appears to be SARS free, but the Az-tecs’ security at No. 2 appears to be wavering.
Why: Like I said, the Rams are creeping ever closer to the No. 2 spot. This team has grown during the past two years under head coach Tim Miles. I’m hesitant to jump the gun and move the Rams up this week, especially considering CSU’s two-point loss to SDSU on Groundhog Day, but the Rams have definitely impressed more than SDSU in the past couple weeks.
Why: After the top three spots, the No. 4 slot has e!ectively become a battle of what team pisses me o! during the week. New Mexico got the edge last week thanks largely in part to the fact that it only played once and wasn’t given ample time to disappoint. Air Force gave the Runnin’ Rebels a scare Wednesday night at the Thomas and Mack Center, but UNLV was able to escape the low-scor-ing a!air with a seven-point victory. The Rebels played SDSU tight on Saturday, losing 63-57, and had a chance to pull the game within two points in the final 20 seconds, but Aztec big man Brian Carlwell blocked Anthony Marshall’s layup attempt to seal the game.
Why: Not so bad, BYU 64 calories. After getting beaten down by big-brother BYU last week, Air Force responded Wednesday by nearly stealing victory from UNLV. The Falcons failed to pull it off in the end, but let’s be honest—who really cares?
Why: Oh boy, moving on up. The truth is, the Utes were never re-ally the eighth-worst team in the MWC, but they were in the dog-house after last week and were punished accordingly. They beat Wyoming on Wednesday, earning them the distin-guished honor of seventh-best in the Mountain West.
Why: The Pokes aren’t last! Indeed, the Arena-Auditorium boys ended their month-long, nine-game losing streak Saturday with a 10-point victory in the Toilet Bowl—TCU vs. Wyoming, that is. It was the first win for interim coach Fred Langley, who replaced Heath Schroyer on Feb. 7.For a second, it looked like the boys might skyrocket all the way to No. 7 in the rankings, but their “star” Desmar Jackson picked up his calling-card early fourth foul against the Utes on Wednesday and, as usual, the good old Wyoming try just wasn’t good enough in the 80-70 loss. The Pokes are o! until Wednesday when they take on the Falcons. A victory over BYU 64 calories would be sure to cause a mass shakeup of the lower half of the Power Rankings. How fun.
Why: The last time the Horned Frogs won a game was Jan. 12, when they beat the Pokes. Before that, it was Dec. 28 against Chi-cago State—an institution internationally heralded for its stellar geography skills.
