MISSION STATEMENTWayne State University believes that intercollegiate athletics are an

important and wholesome adjunct to the principal purposes of the University: (1) the advancement of knowledge through research and investigation; and (2) the dissemination of knowledge through teaching. To that end, participants in intercollegiate athletics must be, first and foremost, students whose fundamental aim is to obtain a sound education.

A major mission of the University is to achieve an increasing level of excellence in the quality of its programs and to enhance the visibility and recognition of the University as a whole. Students who participate in intercollegiate athletics are directly involved in the implementation of this mission of excellence, and by such participation, provide a unifying objective of community and University.

Wayne State University believes that a well-balanced program in intercollegiate sports is important so long as it remains in proper focus as an ancillary of the real purposes of the University; so long as it remains under academic control; so long as the players are bona fide students; and so long as the coaches strive to instill qualities of honesty, sportsmanship and clean play.

president allan d. gilmour

On Aug. 11, 2010, the Wayne State University Board of Governors announced the appointment of Allan D. Gilmour as interim president, beginning Aug. 30, 2010.

Gilmour is best known for his decades-long career at Ford Motor Company. After joining the company in 1960, Gilmour worked closely with the so-called Whiz Kids, J. Edward Lundy and Arjay Miller, credited for helping revitalize Ford after World War II. Gilmour spent the next 35 years rising through the ranks, retiring as vice chairman and chief financial officer in 1995. He rejoined Ford in 2002 before permanently retiring in 2005. During his time with the Ford, he oversaw Finance, the General Auditor’s office, Human Resources, Corporate Affairs and Corporate

Strategy. He also led Ford Credit, the company’s financial services sector.

Gilmour has served on various corporate boards, currently with DTE Energy and Universal Technical Institute. Through the years, he has been a member of the boards of US West, MediaOne Group, Prudential Financial, Dow Chemical and Whirlpool. He also has been active in community organizations such as the Detroit Institute of Arts, Henry Ford Health System Foundation, Citizens Research Council and St. Johnsbury (Vt.) Academy. Gilmour is chairman of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, which distributes roughly $40 million in grants each year to charitable projects in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Livingston, Washtenaw, St. Clair and Monroe counties.

He was co-chair of a $1 billion fund-raising campaign at the University of Michigan that resulted in total gifts to the university of $1.4 billion, and served as honorary co-chair on a second campaign that exceeded its $2.5 billion goal by $700 million.

“Higher education is a great calling,” said Gilmour. “It provides unparalleled opportunities for so many to fulfill their greatest potential for personal and career success. I am excited about this opportunity to lead a top research university with such a

talented faculty, a long history of academic excellence and a profound commitment to community engagement, and I appreciate the Board’s confidence in me.”

“We believe Mr. Gilmour’s enthusiasm and experience are a great fit for Wayne State, and will help the university maintain the positive momentum it has enjoyed over the past several years,” said WSU Board Chairman Richard Bernstein. “Despite a career that reached lofty leadership levels and was marked by extraordinary achievements, Mr. Gilmour is approachable and personable, and known for being a consensus builder who is open to consultation and counsel. He shares our vision for the future and we are excited to have him join the Wayne State family.”

Born on June 17, 1934, Gilmour was raised on his family’s dairy farm in Barnet, Vt. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Harvard University and a master of business administration from the University of Michigan Business School. While working toward a doctoral degree in finance at U-M, Gilmour was a teaching fellow. He says he thoroughly enjoyed teaching but left to acquire some real-world business experience with the assumption that he would eventually return to academia.

service hours volunteering at a variety of Detroit initiatives. The rise in both academic average and community outreach has been dramatic, consistent and unprecedented. In addition, in the latest federally-mandated graduation rate report, WSU student-athletes received an undergraduate degree at a rate 20 percent higher than the comparable campus population. These, and other academic achievements, are recognized at the annual academic banquet, which he started in 2001.

Fournier’s ability to generate private and corporate support has dramatically altered the physical setting of the athletic campus and the practice/competitive opportunities for WSU student-athletes. In his 10 years, he has secured $8,549,957 (9/1/10) in revenue excluding an additional 1.374 million in deferred gifts. That total has helped complete the following facility initiatives: football locker room; baseball’s replica Fenway Park baseball stadium which displays the former Tiger Stadium scoreboard on its famous “Green Monster facade; men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms; softball grandstand, walkway and press box; a Boston Garden-like parquet floor for basketball; Hall of Fame foyer; swimming video board, pool deck and bleachers in the natatorium; football ticket booths and stadium entrance; outdoor marquee; FieldTurf and a new track; scoreboards for baseball and football with a video display; trainer’s treatment area; new USTA tennis courts; and a design charette for a new arena. The physical transformation has been both noticeable and imaginative and boasts a number of cosmetic infrastructure changes as well.

In the past six years alone, student-athletes have committed nearly 27,000 community service hours

with such programs as St. Leo’s and St. Aloysius soup kitchens, Motor City Makeover, Make-A-Wish, Relay for Life, canned food drives, Boys and Girls Club, Toys-for-Tots, Skate for the Cure, Genesis House, Focus Hope and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

In particular, the Think Detroit/PAL initiative pairs WSU student-athletes and coaches with over 13,000 Detroit school children in a variety of program and outreach activities. All this is accomplished under the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, one of the first in the conference. Fournier has also initiated an outreach effort for coaches and staff to volunteer one day a

It has been a decade (1 September 2000) since Rob Fournier was named Director of Athletics at Wayne State University. A lot has changed in those ten (10) years including the department’s competitive success, classroom achievements, outreach initiatives in the community and the physical structure of the athletic campus. That development has followed a plan that focuses on positive opportunities for today’s student-athletes and supporters. The results have been telling.

Wayne State University’s ten (10) best finishes in the prestigious NACDA Cup standings (which measures the overall competitive success of athletic programs around the country) have all occurred in the last 10 years including the two highest marks ever in the past two years – eleventh (11th) in 2009 and twenty-first (21st) in 2010. Those respective finishes secured that WSU would finish in the top four and top seven percent of all Division II athletic programs in those respective seasons. Nine of sixteen (16) athletic teams advanced to the NCAA tournament last season. In those 10 years WSU has catapulted over 100 places in the NACDA rankings. Additionally, in those 10 years, 32 WSU coaches have been named Conference Coach of the Year while three have gone on to be distinguished as National Coach of the Year. For his efforts, Fournier was honored by NACDA as the Athletics Director of the Year in the Central Region in 2008.

Also in 2009-10, the athletic department celebrated the naming of 29 All-Americans. Not surprisingly, the 133 All-Americans that have been honored nationally in the past four years are the most in any like period and coincidently exceed any 10-year period in the 93 years of WSU athletics.

Last year was also a record-setting year academically and in the community. The Fall (2009) term’s cumulative grade-point average for all student-athletes was 3.08 while the Winter term’s mark was also 3.08. Thirteen (13) of WSU’s sixteen (16) athletic programs had cumulative grade-point averages above 3.00.

In addition, in only nine months, WSU student-athletes contributed an exemplary 7,429 community

month to a charitable cause in a program labeled WIN -- Warriors in the Neighborhood.

Fournier served three years as a member of the NCAA regional-ranking football committee whose responsibilities include selecting the top teams in the region each week and the teams that advance to the postseason. This year will be his third on the NCAA softball regional ranking committee. He currently serves as the chair of the GLIAC officiating committee and is past President of the Conference Executive Committee. In women’s hockey, he served as the

chair of the Structure Committee and a member of the Executive Committee.

Prior to joining Wayne State, Fournier served as the Senior Associate Commissioner and general counsel for the Mid-American Conference. While serving as the acting Commissioner of the Conference (1999), he moved the league office from Toledo to Cleveland, wrote and secured a long-term contract for the men’s basketball tournament at the Gund Arena (now Quicken Loans Arena) and secured the three largest corporate gifts in the history of the MAC including First Energy as the tournament sponsor for the men’s postseason basketball tournament.

He also wrote and negotiated the Motor City Bowl football contract that is the MAC’s longest post-season Bowl alignment. As the chief compliance officer for the league, Fournier investigated and reported on over 350 infraction cases that insured fairness in case resolution and corrective action. At the request of institutions, he has appeared before the NCAA Committee on Infractions and conducted campus reviews of compliance effectiveness in financial aid, rules education, eligibility and institutional control. He has served as liaison to various NCAA committees for which the conference held cabinet positions. The MAC presidents recognized Fournier’s achievements when they unanimously conferred a Certificate of Commendation and a mark of esteem for his efforts in 1999.

A licensed attorney, he received his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude and his master’s with honors from the University of Akron. He was a national forensics champion and qualified for the national finals in six events. Fournier received his law degree from Akron in 1986 and was admitted to the Ohio bar that same year where he is still licensed to practice.

head coach phil nickel

Phil Nickel was named the 12th head coach in the history of the Wayne State University women’s volleyball program on March 3, 2008, by WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier.

In his first season at the helm, Nickel led the Warriors to the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 2005. Wayne State advanced past the opening round for the first time since 1997 by defeating Hillsdale in the quarterfinal in Detroit. The Warriors were defeated by Grand Valley State in the semifinals, but finished the season 17-12 including a 9-7 mark in conference play.

The following year, Nickel’s squad went 19-9 to post the highest win total since 1998 and the highest winning percentage since 1997. The Warriors again qualified for the conference tournament, losing 3-1 at Ashland in the quarterfinals.

“In Phil we have the person that reflects well on the long and comprehensive national search process we undertook,” said Fournier. “He brings leadership, a strong recruiting background and knows what it takes to build and sustain a winning program. His positive reception during the interview process by student-athletes, staff and other coaches underscores those intangible attributes that are so necessary to work with divergent groups and achieve success. I look forward to the energy, focused approach and work habits that have been a trademark of his career.”

Nickel came to Wayne State after serving as the assistant coach at the University of Houston for the last six seasons (2002-07). His responsibilities at Houston included recruiting, personnel development and assisting with on-court coaching. During his tenure with the

Cougars, Nickel helped coach eight athletes to 12 All-Conference honors, including the 2004 and 2005 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year Jaci Gonzalez.

“First of all, I would like to thank Rob Fournier for the opportunity to lead the Wayne State volleyball program,” commented Nickel. “This gives me the chance to bring my family back to the Midwest, and to build a championship volleyball program. Rob has made a commitment to the volleyball program, and I look forward to working with him to reach the goals we have set.”

His other NCAA Division I volleyball experience includes assistant coaching positions at Illinois State (2000-01) and Wright State (1998-99), as well as a head coaching position at Division III Thomas More College for two years (1996-97). Nickel compiled a 34-43 mark in his two seasons with the Saints leading them to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a #4 ranking in the South Region in 1997. TMC finished the year with a 20-17 record.

Nickel has served as a committee member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, which represents the interests of collegiate

assistant volleyball coaches, and was also the Chair of the Professional Development Sub-Committee.

He led the Houston Juniors 17 national team to the Silver Championship at the 2006 USA Volleyball Junior Olympic Championships as

well as coaching the U17 Black Team for Illinois Juniors Volleyball Club to fifth-place finishes in 2001 and 2002 and had four players named to the All-Tournament Team at USA Nationals. He has also coached the Dayton Juniors and Western Buckeye Volleyball Club.

Nickel attended Ohio Northern for two years, where he played football and baseball. He then transferred to the University of Cincinnati where he played volleyball on the men’s club team from 1992-95. He served as a captain and president from 1994-95 and earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1995. Nickel furthered his education at Wright State University, where he was involved in the Athletics Administration Masters Program.

A native of Richwood, Ohio, he and his wife, Michelle, have two sons, Trey and Zackary, along with a daughter Kaia.

set (9.58) while contributing 21 service aces, second-most on the team, as well as 170 digs, 51 kills and 45 blocks.

“Cydney did a great job last year. As a coaching staff we talked about how hard it was for her to come in as a freshman and take over the setting position when you had five seniors on the team. I think that’s asking a lot, but she did a great job.”

Biessel facilitated an offense which ranked second only to Hillsdale last season in hitting percentage. Factoring significantly into WSU’s front row proficiency in 2009 was Katarzyna Sak, Wayne State’s top returning net player who finished third in the GLIAC with a .305 hitting percentage, tied for 10th-best in school history. An All-GLIAC Honorable Mention selection, Sak was one of only two freshmen to receive all-conference accolades in 2009.

“Kate had a tremendous spring. She’s really blossomed into a tremendous player,” said Nickel. “She’ll need to pick up some slack from a kills perspective of the seniors who graduated last year. We expect her to maintain a good hitting percentage and be an offensive leader on this team.”

After an impressive high school career, Madie Kent will be looking to reach her full potential as she enters her second collegiate season. Kent ranked 18th in the GLIAC in blocks per set (0.64) and collected 64 kills as a freshman.

Lindsey Graciak is projected to be the starting libero in 2010. She totaled 103 digs in 74 sets last year and finished fourth on the team with 17 service aces.

Seven rookies round out this year’s roster, and many of these freshmen will fill the gaps left up front by last season’s senior class.

“I think they all have the potential to contribute right away,” said Nickel.

When Phil Nickel arrived at Wayne State to take over the volleyball program in March 2008, he set out to instill a winning attitude in his student-athletes. As Nickel enters his third season at the helm, it appears that attitude has taken effect.

“Even though we went 19-9 last year and went to the GLIAC Tournament for the second year in a row, there was a sense of disappointment that we didn’t do a little better, so I think that says a lot about the expectations within the program,” said Nickel.

The Warriors return seven letterwinners from a 2009 squad which recorded the highest win total since 1998 and the best winning percentage since 1997.

“We were really excited with the year we had,” said Nickel. “It’s a testament to where the program has come in the two years we’ve been here and the direction we’re heading.”

However, to get Wayne State back to the postseason in 2010, Nickel will have to do so with a roster comprised almost entirely of underclassmen, as 11 of his 14 student-athletes are either freshmen or sophomores.

Nickel is prepared to deal with some of the growing pains and inconsistencies common

with young teams, but nonetheless likes the potential in his squad and feels that, “we have a lot of talent - probably the most depth in talent we’ve had in the two years I’ve been here.”

Maureen MacDonald, one of three seniors on the team, will return to the outside hitter position after spending a year at the libero spot. The two-year captain played in every match last season and finished ninth in the GLIAC in digs per set (3.35).

“We expect a lot of leadership from Mo,” said Nickel. “She provides a lot of energy and emotion, and a great positive attitude all the time.”

Setter Katy Westenberg, who enters her senior season ranked sixth all-time at WSU in career assists (1,952) and assists per set (9.34), and middle blocker Mariel VanOverbeke make up the remainder of the veteran corps.

Critical to the success of the 2010 Warriors will be the play of their sophomore class. Cydney Biessel came on the scene as the starting setter last year and totaled 1,015 assists, 13th-most in school history. She finished fifth in the conference in assists per

Middle hitter Nicole Arends played three years on the varsity volleyball team and was a significant contributor on the state runner-up squad in 2009. She was a two-time first team all-conference and all-area selection, earned all-state honors twice, and served as team captain for two years.

Outside hitter Kristen Bulkiewicz was an all-star and MVP at Sandwich Secondary, and was named most dedicated. A 6-1 athlete with a diversified background, she also participated in basketball, track and field, and badminton, and was a silver medalist in both badminton and the high jump.

Jessica DeLeeuw was an all-state selection her senior season and was named MVP of the Macomb Area Conference Red Division. The 5-7 setter and two-year team captain was a two-time all-region and a three-time all-city honoree.

Despite missing her senior season due to an injury, Jen Finkbeiner was a two-time all-conference and offensive player of the year selection. The 5-11 middle blocker led the 2008 squad in hitting and blocking as Saline went 45-15-2.

Ava Frakes, a 5-7 defensive specialist, helped Dearborn win a district title and reach the regional finals in 2008 and 2009. She claimed all-city accolades as well as all-conference and all-region honorable mention.

Middle blocker Kris Vulaj was a two-time all-conference selection for the Union Panthers. She served as team captain her senior year and was a 2008 scholar athlete. She also played AAU volleyball, training with Instant Replay volleyball club for two years.

Amanda Wetherill is a 6-1 middle blocker who led the Riverdale Falcons to consecutive first-place finishes in 2007 and 2008, and second place in 2009. She was a two-time

all-conference honoree and a 2009 second team all-district selection, having set single-season school records in 2009 for aces and blocks, as well as the career aces record.

The Warriors will begin their 36th season of volleyball Sept. 3-4 at an invitational hosted by the University of Indianapolis.

Of Wayne State’s 17 scheduled opponents, nine qualified for the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The Warriors will be tested immediately, as they open with a match Sept. 3 against Indianapolis. The Greyhounds went 38-2 last year and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals, where they lost to the eventual undefeated national champion Concordia-St. Paul.

Wayne State will also meet Tusculum and Truman State, two NCAA regional qualifiers in 2009, as well as West Virginia State before opening its GLIAC schedule Sept. 7 at Hillsdale.

“It will be a really good test for us the very first weekend and hopefully will help prepare us for GLIAC play,” said Nickel.

The Warriors will play their first home matches at the Matthaei on Sept. 10 against Lake Erie, which is joining the GLIAC this season after transitioning from NCAA Division

III, and Sept. 11 versus Ashland. The schedule includes three Sunday

matches, beginning with a Sept. 19 matchup at Ohio Dominican, another new GLIAC member in 2010 and formerly a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The Panthers will come to Detroit on Sunday, Oct. 24. Wayne State’s other Sunday match is Sept. 26 as WSU hosts Grand Valley State.

The third annual GLIAC/GLVC Crossover will be held Oct. 15-16, at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill. Following the Crossover, five of WSU’s seven remaining matches will be played at the Matthaei, leading into the 2010 GLIAC Tournament beginning Thursday, Nov. 11.

With six GLIAC teams qualifying for the NCAA Regional tournament last year, Nickel feels that another strong season for his Warriors can put them in position for a postseason berth. Clearly the expectations are higher, but so is the potential for success.

Parham. as. the.only.players.in.school.history.to.reach.the.500-kill.mark. in.a.single.season,. the.Tartars.went.26-10.and qualified for the NCAA Regional tournament for the second time, losing a first-round match at Northern.Michigan.

Tim.Bearden.took.over.as.head.coach.in.1995.and,. as. the. GLIAC. split. into. two. divisions,. led.Wayne.State.to.three.consecutive.South.Division.championships. from. 1996-98.. . One. season.

State.finished 21-13 overall that season, but would subsequently. endure. six. straight. losing. seasons.as. the. program. struggled. heading. into. the. new.millennium.

Wayne.State.was.ousted.from.the.1999.GLIAC.Tournament.by.Grand.Valley.State.in.straight.sets,.and.would.not.return.until.2005.in.Ernie.Gilbert’s.second.year.as.head.coach...Elisa.Joris.was.the.standout.on.that.squad,.becoming.the.second.All-American.in.program.history.her.senior.year...She.led. the.nation.with.a.1.79.blocks/game.average,.second-best. at.
