In February 2010, heavy snows and frigid –50° C temperatures hit Mongolia hard. The weather was so extreme that a state of disaster was declared in 15 of the country’s 21 provinces. Like others in the Khovd Province, five-year-old Uralbai’s family could not afford much to eat after most of their animals died and feed costs tripled. UNICEF responded to the disaster by providing food, fuel, blankets, hygiene kits, medical supplies, and boots to more than 60,000 children.

Sarah, from Yemen’s Al Munirah District, dreams of becoming a doctor. But she is not in school and, instead, spends her days doing domestic chores. Malehloa, a young mother in Lesotho, an impoverished nation in southern Africa, discovered she was HIV positive while pregnant with her second child.
