“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” – Frederick Douglass

Dear Friends:

The Salvation Army loves children and young people! We are devoted to their holistic development – spirit, soul and body – and believe in their unlimited potential.

We are also aware children and young people are pliable, adaptive and resilient. Their character is indelibly formed by their home, school and community. They are a reflection of our highest hopes and, difficult to admit, often the victims of our greatest failures. When they hurt we surround them with love. When they triumph we celebrate with joy.

The purpose of the Kroc Center’s Day Camp is to immerse our community’s children in an environment of love where they’re safe to explore their interests and talents, dreams and desires. We’re here to awaken our community’s young people — to show them the assets they possess to build a positive future. While we anticipate the leadership and direction they will provide to our world tomorrow, who they are today is our hope for the future.

Thank you for entrusting your children to the Kroc Center Day Camp. We promise to encourage them today so they create a hope-filled tomorrow.

Peace.

Captains John & Lisa Van CleefExecutive Directors

DAY CAMP ON

Dear Parents,

I started going to camp when I was 11 years old, and haven’t stopped yet! That first summer I was in awe of the breadth of new opportunities introduced each day. I learned to make lanyards and other crafts. I learned every camp song in the book, acknowledging the feeling of freedom as I belted out the words at rallies and campfires. I tried every activity available, always looking forward to my next favorite thing. What I remember most is the community I became a part of; group mates became best friends, counselors became superheroes. I left feeling exhilarated, counting down the days until the next summer and looking forward to the year I could return as a Junior Leader, and eventually, a Counselor.

In a time when information is measured in megabytes, and vowels have become superfluous, relationships become even more significant. Through connecting with others, we begin to notice commonalities, sharing similar interests and activities, resulting in true community.

The Salvation Army Kroc Center Day Camp prides itself in the sense of community that is built over the course of a summer. Community is about valuing each individual for their unique qualities and supporting one another toward a common goal. Our program fosters community through these four goals: facilitating personal growth and safety; developing social and cultural awareness and respect; developing skills in activity-specific areas; and having fun!

Our program ensures that every child’s uniqueness is valued, regardless of ability. As proud partners of the National Inclusion Project; our counselors receive training and resources to work with campers with special needs, learning to provide appropriate and respectful accommodations so all children have opportunities for success.

A set of consistent behavioral standards is the cornerstone of an effective community. Our relationship with PeaceBuilders® has provided invaluable tools for facilitating the process of building community. These resources help the counselors create a peaceful camp environment, one in which the campers and counselors practice positive conflict resolution and respectful group interactions. Discussions and activities based on a daily values theme set the foundation; tools such as Peace Tags and Praise Notes reinforce positive behavior.

Strong communities thrive on the concept of open communication. I welcome you and your child to the Kroc Center Day Camp community and encourage you to share your thoughts with me and the camp leadership team as we enter another exciting summer. Contact me through any of the media listed below, and stay connected online.

GENERAL INFORMATION

American Camp Association (ACA)Accreditation We are extremely proud to be an ACA Accredited Camp. This means that children are spending their summer in a safe and fun environment, supervised by well-qualified counselors. We have undergone a thorough review of

operations, staffing, programming and safety. The ACA is the recognized leader in organized camps. For more information about the ACA and what accreditation means to parents and the community, visit www.acacamps.org.

Day Camp StaffOur staff is as diverse as our campers. The majority of our staff members are recruited from local colleges and universities. Most importantly, our staff is made up of people who love kids. They want to spend their time playing, teaching, and working with children. All Kroc Center Day Camp staff members are certified in basic First Aid & CPR and receive extensive training prior to the start of camp. You can be sure that we are hiring the best of the best to work with your children.

Inclusion The Kroc Center is committed to the inclusion of all children in our Day Camp Program. Parents of children with special needs should contact the Day Camp Manager at least two weeks prior to the desired session’s start date to determine whether the Kroc Center can provide appropriate accommodations and which camp(s) are best suited for him or her. Inclusion intake forms are available upon request or as a download on www.kroccenter.org/day-camp.

Lunch Program

Lunch and a snack are provided to each camper and are included in the camp fees. If a camper is a picky eater, has allergies or has dietary restrictions, we encourage parents to pack a lunch from home. Choosing not to use this benefit will not reduce the price of camp. Meals are prepared hot on the premises each day and provide one third of the USDA daily recommended nutrition. At least one vegetarian option is available each day.

NOTE: Campers staying for Extended Care are often hungry due to the amount of energy expended throughout the day. Please send camper with additional snacks if staying past 4:00 p.m.

Medical NeedsPlease include all pertinent medical information on the Registration Form, including prescription and non-prescription medications and allergies. If your child needs medications administered during the camp day, a Medical Information Form must be completed. Medication(s) must be in their original prescription container with the child’s name printed on the label, and placed in a plastic bag. Prescription medications are secured by our staff in the camp office. Parents can download the Medical Information Form from www.kroccenter.org/day-camp or request a copy from the Day Camp Manager. Parents may sign the bottom of the Medical Information Form to authorize campers to carry and administer his/her medications needed for life-threatening conditions such as an epinephrine injector (Epi-Pen) and asthma inhalers. Prior approval is needed for other medications to be carried by campers. Kroc Center staff will not dispense non-prescription medications without written parental consent.

Staff-to-Camper RatioKroc Center Day Camp ensures sufficient staff-to-camper ratios as recommended by the American Camp Association and will not exceed 1:10. A minimum of two staff are always present, regardless of the number of campers. This will also be adhered to during irregular camp hours (Extended Care, movie time, and field trips).

PeaceBuilders ®

The Kroc Center Day Camp is proud to be a

licensed PeaceBuilders site. Counselors receive

excellent training on the anti-bullying and

pro-peace curriculum and philosophy of

PeaceBuilders. The six foundational principles are

integrated into the camp program throughout

the week and include: What is Peace?, Give up Put-Downs, Seek Wise People,

Right Wrongs, Help Others and Praise People. Campers participate in group-

building activities each morning that emphasize the daily theme and can

earn incentives for demonstrating peaceful behavior. In 2009 the Kroc

Center Day Camp received recognition from the office of California

Assemblyman Joel Anderson, District 77, for Outstanding Community Service,

as demonstrated by our commitment to practicing the PeaceBuilders

principles. Go to the PeaceBuilders website at www.peacebuilders.com for

more information on the program.

Weekly Camp ThemeWeekly themes are reflected during Morning Rally and throughout daily activities. We encourage children to get into the spirit of camp on Fridays by wearing a costume. Costumes should be age-appropriate, non-restrictive and allow for full participation in typical camp activities.

Thursdays in the Theatre What better way to beat the heat than to enjoy a few relaxing hours in a full-size movie theatre? Each Thursday afternoon campers watch a movie in our Joan B. Kroc Theatre. Movies are selected based on appropriateness for the general camper population (G or PG), as well as the weekly theme. A complete list of movies is available at the Day Camp Office after the start of the camp season. Each movie is followed by a brief “Moral of the Movie” discussion and activity.

Club 3:16Sunday morning values, weekday fun! Kids can attend this session for FREE following the Day Camp Movie of the Week. Day Camp enrollment is not required to attend Club 3:16. Kids make crafts and hear more about the moral lessons found in popular movies. Taught by a representative of Kroc Church. For more information, call 619.269.1529 or e-mail [email protected]. Fantastic Fridays At Camp Fridays offer campers new opportunities and exciting activities that may include participating in performances or supporting their fellow campers from Specialty Camps such as Cheer or Hip Hop. On Friday afternoons, campers come together on the Recreation Field for a theme-related “All-Camp” activity. Activities and contests are planned collaboratively by the Day Camp Staff and are designed to be all-inclusive.

WHAT PARENTS ARE SAYING...

*Real quotes from 2009 Summer Day Camp Parents.

We’ve used Kroc camps for about four years and they have been excellent. My older daughter is now

a volunteer. It’s been a very positive situation.

Trevor LOVED camp!!! He was so happy andupbeat the entire time, and he was much more

relaxed than he usually is about trying new thingsand meeting new people. I am thrilled he got to

do this and will definitely come back again.

I really appreciate the Kroc staff, making everyeffort to provide a safe environment for my daughter in regards to her [special needs].

They watched her very well.

This was our first experience at the Kroc Center and it was great. We look forward to coming again soon!

The best price I’ve found in San Diego for the time and variety of activities.

[My son] had a wonderful, safe summer because of day camp. I couldn’t be more pleased.

We have been attending Kroc Summer Camps for 5 years now and my son has enjoyed it very much….

We love it!!!

Kroc Camp is fantastic! … [The Camp Leadership] isso fabulous and readily available to me when I email

-- it is almost like instant messaging! [They’re] just fantastic. I am always impressed by counselors.

This was my daughter’s first time and she loved it! ALL of the counselors are great, and my kids love the wide range of activities that they get to do each day. There is never a dull moment at camp!!! Thank you!!
