RODEO AUSTIN is
Committed to
FOR MANY YEARS, the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo has been protecting our Earth’s
environment through green initiatives implemented on the Fairgrounds and at the corporate
headquarters. Rodeo Austin is proud to do its part to keep the environment clean and is able
to do so through great partnerships with companies like Organics By Gosh, Austin Energy
and Allied Waste.
The Livestock Shavings Recycling Program’s main objective is to send the waste left behind
by the 6,000 head of livestock to be recycled instead of being dumped in a landfill. By
partnering with Organics By Gosh, the animal waste and shavings were converted into all
natural fertilizer compost that is used in gardens as well as for lawn maintenance. In total,
an estimated 120,000 pounds of waste was composted, making the livestock exhibitors the
largest recyclers at the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo! The newly created organic fertilizer
compost was distributed only to Austin area businesses, eliminating nationwide shipping,
thus reducing fuel and emissions.
One of the longest-standing green programs has been the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo’s
participation in Austin Energy’s GreenChoice Program. This program powers the corporate
headquarters with clean energy from natural sources, such as wind and sun, instead of
fossil fuels. Since the program was launched in 2005, this effort has prevented 85 tons of
CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere.
The more than 300,000 Fairgrounds visitors were able to get involved with the green
movement by recycling their empty cans, plates, bags, and more. Allied Waste, a vendor
and sponsor, was a fantastic partner in creating the plastics, paper and aluminum recycling
program. The success of the 2010 recycling resulted in saving eight cubic yards of landfill
space, 42 trees, 927 gallons of oil and 17,080 gallons of water.
Leading the effort to protect our community’s environment, the Star of Texas Fair and
Rodeo is proud to include environmentally sustainable practices in the office and event
operations. Moving forward to 2011, Rodeo Austin is excited to introduce its latest edition
to the Going Green Program: Eco Art, a youth recycling program. Get your creative juices
flowing to turn items destined for the trash into new vibrant masterpieces!
