DESCRIPTION

Script to the 2010 National Date Festival's Nightly Pageant show. Cheesy, but it made me very happy. Beautiful memories from this time still bring tears to my eyes.

MUSIC NOTE: BEGIN TRACKS

Opening Procession – Chinese theme with

dragons celebrating Emperor’s B-Day.

Chinese lanterns hang from “clothesline” but

with individual decorated pole controls to

pull out across stage to designate China.

Plus individual lighted Chinese lanterns on

fishing poles are carried out and set in

holders in the marketplace carts.

PRINCESS BADOURA: Happy birthday, Father, enjoy your celebration!

Belly dancers perform to Emperor (facing SL

platform) and with a decidedly oriental

routine that midway begins to transform to a

mid-eastern flair. As it transforms they play

to audience (facing audience) as the cast

transforms the stage from Chinese to Arabic

and the procession of the Sultan enters;

Emperor and company proceed to China

palace and remain in a freeze there. The

belly dancers end performing directly to

Sultan (facing palace).

Scheherazade singers come forward to

perform

MUSIC NOTE: This is the Story of Scheherazade (Tune of Gilligan’s Island Theme Song)

TBD:

This is the story of Scheherazade, she tried to keep her head

If not for the stories that she told each night, she surely would be dead.

The Sultan was a jealous man, his first wife went astray.

And so he had her head cut off and married new each day.

CHORUS:

He married new each day

TBD:

Each morning every bride the same disastrous fate would meet

They’d lose their head before they’d even have a chance to cheat

CHORUS:

They wouldn’t have a chance to cheat.

TBD:

This went on for quite some time, more women lost their lives

As Sultan had, his Grand Vizier, find new brides every day

Til Scheherazade, begged the Vizier and volunteered to be Sultan’s next bride!

Her father pleaded that she reconsider this poor deed

As Grand Vizier he knew too well just where it all would lead

But Scheherazade she had a plan, she knew she’d be all right,

As long as she could find a way to live from night to night.

CHORUS:

If she could live from night to night!

TBD:

She’d start a tale each night that glued the Sultan to his seat

She’d stop it in the morning though he begged her to complete

CHORUS:

He begged her to complete

TBD:

Next night she’d start again and bring more characters to life

Like Sinbad and Aladdin, too, Ali Baba and the forty thieves,

CHORUS:

With Genies and fairies and plots you wouldn’t believe!

TBD:

Suspense! Intrigue! And drama, too! Became a nightly thing,

Til Sultan dropped his guard and let Scheherazade’s love in.

And that is why we have the tales, that bring us all delights

They’re now known as the tales of

CHORUS:

1001 Arabian Nights!

SCENE 1A

Ensemble leaves stage. On steps of castle

GRAND VIZIER: The annual Khaledan counsel meeting will now come to order.

are Sultan, Sultaness, Grand Vizier, Prince

Zaman, several counsel members, guards.

GRAND VIZIER: Our first item of business – as usual – the marriage of Prince Zaman.

PRINCE ZAMAN: Here we go again! I’ve told you, there is to be no marriage.

GRAND VIZIER: What a shocker!

SULTAN: Son, you know I want to turn over my throne to you, but my counsel is

concerned that you are not mature enough to rule. Marriage will assure them you are

ready. Why do you resist honoring my wishes?

PRINCE ZAMAN: We’ve been through this every year – I cannot bring myself to trust any

woman. I have read too many stories about them; they are treacherous, vain, conniving,

shallow, traitorous, weak, disloyal, and deceitful! Did you not listen to the tale of

Scheherazade you just heard?

SULTAN: Yes, and Scheherazade was a good wife – was she not?

PRINCE ZAMAN: She is the exception! The rule is that women cannot be trusted!

SULTAN: Nonsense, there are many good women right here in Khaledan.

PRINCE ZAMAN: Name anyone who has found one!

Sultaness pokes him in ribs

SULTAN: Um, er

SULTAN: Oh, yes! I found one in your mother didn’t’ I?

PRINCE ZAMAN: I could search the whole world and not find a Scheherazade for me.

SCENE 1B

DOWN ON CASTLE; UP ON CHINA

PLATFORM

LIGHT CUE:

Emperor, Empress, Princess Badoura,

Nurse, Marzavan, guards on platform

heated discussion in progress

PRINCESS BADOURA: Ooggh! Father, must we have this discussion yet again!

EMPEROR: Daughter, I do not understand why you are so determined not to marry -

especially knowing how happy it will make me if you do.

PRINCESS BADOURA: What about my happiness? I already have everything I could

possibly want – palaces, servants, fine clothes and jewelry and, most of all,

independence. I certainly don’t need a man, and why would I want one when he will just

try to control me.

SCENE 1C

BACK UP ON PALACE

LIGHT CUE:

Wives push husbands aside to lovingly

appeal to their child

SULTANESS AND EMPRESS: But don’t you want the joy that comes from giving your

heart to someone?

Ensemble, beginning with dancers may

begin to filter back on stage during this

song.

PRINCE ZAMAN AND PRINCESS BADOURA: Joy! That’s not what you get!

Here’s what you get when you give your heart?

You get it all broken up and battered

That’s what you get, a heart that’s shattered

I’ll never ever fall in love

I’ll never ever fall in love

PRINCE ZAMAN:

What do you get when you fall in love?

A girl with a pin to burst your bubble

That’s what you get for all your trouble

I’ll never ever fall in love

I’ll never ever fall in love

PRINCESS BADOURA:

What do you get when you kiss a guy?

You get enough germs to catch pneumonia

And more than that, they think they own ya,

I’ll never ever fall in love

I’ll never ever fall in love

PRINCE ZAMAN AND PRINCESS BADOURA:

Don’t tell me what it’s all about

‘Cause I’ve heard tales that would make you shout

Shout about chains those chains that bind you

That is why I’m here to remind you

What do you get when you fall in love?

You only get lies and pain and sorrow

And don’t try to ask again tomorrow!

If ensemble has not already entered they

come in now to see what the disturbance is.

GRAND VIZIER: This defiance cannot be tolerated any longer, Zaman must be locked up

until he comes to his senses.

PRINCESS BADOURA:

I’ll never ever fall in love!

EMPEROR: Such insolence – you clearly have lost your mind. You will remain confined

until you are cured of your insanity.

As each is being dragged away – Zaman to

the dungeon cell SR platform; Badoura to

her room SL upper platform.

PRINCESS ZAMAN AND PRINCESS BADOURA:

I’ll never ever fall in love!

I was just kickin back, strolling through China

When inside the palace was a stir

Flash! Bam! Alakazam!

I got a look at her!

She was a vision in silk, except she was human,

And that’s just not my cup of tea, but

Wham! Bam! Alakazam!

She still seemed perfect to me!

One look at my fair Princess

That’s all it took for me

And the ceiling fell in and the bottom fell out

I went into a spin and I started to shout

She is it, she is it, she . . .

Ginny-Me kicks Minion H in shin to get

MINION H: Who are . . .

Her to bow

To Ginny-Me

Ginny-Me laughs uncontrollably but silently

GENIE CASCHCASCH: Oh, this is Ginny-Me – my little protégé. Now, did I hear

something about a perfect human –

that’s an oxy-moron if I ever heard one.

FAIRY PERIE BANOU: Not in this case! Right over there in my cave is a perfect human.

FAIRY DANHASCH: No, THE perfect human is in China.

GENIE CASCHCASCH: No, no, no! We simply get them together side-by-side and

compare them. I will make the decision.

Sorry, WE will make the decision. Agreed?

GENIE CASCHCASCH: Prince Zaman!

FAIRY PERIE BANOU: Ha, see, he picked mine – I win!

GENIE CASCHCASCH: No, I mean this is Prince Zaman of Khaledan – oh, and this young

lady is Princess Badoura of China. This is a dilemma – each is equal in beauty – in fact,

they could be twins. We must decide this contest in some other way.

Raising hands and jumping up and down

MINIONS: Ooh! Ooh! Ooh!

Ginny-Me kicks Minion H in shin again.

GENIE CASCHCASCH: No bake-off!

Disappointed

MINION H: Ouch!

Simultaneously with Minion H sound

MINIONS: Aawww!

GENIE CASCHCASCH: We shall keep them in an enchanted sleep and awaken them one

at a time. The one who proves to be as beautiful inside as out is the most perfect.

FAIRY DANHASCH: I have seen my human awake and have no doubt that you will see

that her inner beauty exceeds her outer beauty.

FAIRY PERIE BANOU: Then my Prince should be awakened first so that you needn’t wait

as long to see that you are wrong.

Ginny-Me claps hands twice – Zaman stirs

GENIE CASCHCASCH: So be it, Prince Zaman awaken!

Awake and realizes he is not alone; he

jumps and spins around to examine the

Maybe I'm wise

But you've got me seeing

Through different eyes

Somehow I've fallen

Under your spell

And somehow I'm feeling

It's up that I fell

Every moment

As long as you're mine

I'll wake up my body

And make up for lost time

Say there's a future

For us as a pair

And know it is so

I’ll be there

Just for this moment

As long as you're mine

Come be how you want to

And see how bright we shine

Borrow the moonlight

Until it is through

And know I'll be here holding you

As long as you're mine

PRINCE ZAMAN: How did you get here? My father! He brought you here to see if I truly

have a steadfast aversion to marriage. Had he introduced us sooner, he - and I - would

have found that I do not. Hello! Wake up! Hello! I must know who you are! By what

PRINCESS BADOURA: Who are you? Where am I? How did I get here? My father! He

must have brought us together knowing that you would break me of my resistance to

marriage. Had he done this sooner, I should not have been so direct and disrespectful to

him. Hello! Wake up! Hello! Why do you sleep so soundly?

What’s this? In my sleep you have answered a dream that I did not know I had? You

need a symbol of my love in return.

This ring will do

Lunging toward the couple

Ginny-Me claps twice and Badoura

FAIRY PERIE BANOU: Aaarrgh! He’s Mine!

Yawns and lays down next to Zaman – falls

asleep

FAIRY DANHASCH: Banou! I thought our game was just a fanciful way to pass time using

these humans for our amusement, but you seem smitten!

GENIE CASCHCASCH: Is this true, Banou?

FAIRY PERIE BANOU: Maybe. So what if I want a human. This is 2010, must we be so

closed-minded? Shouldn’t a fairy be able to marry whomever they want?

GENIE CASCHCASCH: If you are meant to be with a human it will happen. But you

cannot interfere with destiny to advance your desires. It is clear that these two humans

are equal in beauty and equally deserving of each other. The contest is a draw!

Banou is clearly disappointed, Danhasch

tries to comfort her.

MORNING IN DUNGEON CAVE

LIGHT CUE:

Zaman wakes up – slowly remembers–

thinks he dreamed – finds ring

PRINCE ZAMAN: I could not have dreamt such beauty? My amulet! That is proof that she

was real for I have it no more! And what is this? Her ring! She returns my devotion.

Guard! Guard!

GUARD FARUKH: What is it Prince Zaman?

PRINCE ZAMAN: Farukh, it is urgent that I speak with my father. Please make haste and

bring him here. Tell him it regards my impending marriage!

Excited that the Prince is better

GUARD FARUKH: Certainly, Prince Zaman, certainly!

PRINCE ZAMAN: Mustaffa, I trust that you guarded my cell through the night?

GUARD MUSTAFFA: Yes, Prince Zaman.

PRINCE ZAMAN: No doubt you are aware of the beautiful maiden my father brought here.

Looking very confused

GUARD MUSTAFFA: Sire, no one has entered your cell since we left you at sundown.

PRINCE ZAMAN: Of course, my father instructed your silence. I understand. I will let him

be the one to tell.

GUARD MUSTAFFA: I mean no disrespect, my Prince, but should I send for the palace

doctor as well?

PRINCE ZAMAN: Well played, Mustaffa, but I am more than fine and have need of but one

thing to make me perfect – that is to know the name of the maiden-of-the-night who is to

be my future bride.

SULTAN: My son! You have come to your senses and decided to marry after all?

PRINCE ZAMAN: Yes, thanks to your clever trick.

SULTAN: Yes, well, I am sorry that it took such drastic measures to reach this end, but . . .

PRINCE ZAMAN: Come on, you’ve won, father. Who is she? Where is she?

SULTAN: Huh?

PRINCE ZAMAN: My bride – the one you sent me last night!

SULTAN: Huh?

PRINCE ZAMAN: She was perfect! Flawless complexion! Classic symmetrical features!

Exquisite beauty! An angel!

SULTAN: Huh? You must be describing a dream.

PRINCE ZAMAN: She was.

To guards

SULTAN: No, I mean a real dream. I sent no one to you last night. And no one was

allowed in – right?

GUARDS: That is correct, your majesty.

Sultan is stunned and confused – concedes

PRINCE ZAMAN: But she must be real. Look, I have her ring and she has my amulet.

SULTAN: I don’t understand how she could have been here, but I must believe you that

How do you measure, measure a year?

In daylights, in sunsets,

In midnights, in cups of coffee?

In inches, in miles,

In laughter, in strife?

In five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes,

How do you measure a year in the life?

How about love?

How about love?

How about love?

Measure in love.

Seasons of love,

Seasons of love.

Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes,

Five hundred twenty five thousand journeys to plan,

Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes,

How do you measure the life of a woman or a man?

In truth that we learn,

Or in times that we cry?

In bridges we burn,

Or the way that we die?

It's time now, to sing out,

Though the story never ends.

I will find you Zaman.

I'll never desert you

I promise you this

Till the day that I die

PRINCESS BADOURA: Marzavan, it has been nearly a week since my beloved Zaman

disappeared. Could he have changed his mind? After all, the amulet is missing, too.

MARZAVAN: No, Badoura, do not doubt his love. I have traveled many months with

Zaman and know the great extent of his love for you.

PRINCESS BADOURA: Of course, you are right. I trust that there is good cause for him to

be away. But what should we do?

MARZAVAN: The Sultan is expecting Prince Zaman to return to Khaledan within a year of

when he departed. Zaman will want to keep his promise to his father. If he is unable to

find his way back here, I am sure he will continue to Khaledan trusting that I will get you

safely there.

PRINCESS BADOURA: But Zaman’s entourage will never allow us to go on without him.

ENTOURAGE 1: What is the matter your highness? Why do you stop so close to home?

PRINCESS BADOURA (AS ZAMAN): I am nervous because I do not know if my bride-to-be

marry. It is only four more days before my year is up.

ENTOURAGE 1: We can go into town to see if she is there, your highness.

The heart leaps up to behold

This golden day.

PRINCESS BADOURA (AS ZAMAN):

Pardon me, is everybody here? Because if everybody's here, I want to thank you

all for coming to the wedding, I'd appreciate your going even more, I mean you

must have lots of better things to do, and not a word of this to her, remember her,

you know, the one I'm s’posed to marry, but I'm not, because I wouldn't ruin

anyone as wonderful as she now--

Thank you all for the gifts and the flowers,

Thank you all, now it's back to the showers,

And don't tell Sultan I'm not getting married today.

MARZAVAN:

Bless this day, tragedy of life,

“Husband” joined to wife.

The heart sinks down and feels dead

This dreadful day.

PRINCESS BADOURA (AS ZAMAN):

Listen, everybody, look, I don't know what you're waiting for, a wedding, what's a

wedding, it's a prehistoric ritual where everybody promises fidelity forever, which

is maybe the most horrifying word I ever heard of, which is followed by a

honeymoon, where suddenly she'll realize that I am not a man, and wanna kill me,

which she should--

Thanks a bunch, but I'm not getting married--

Go have lunch, 'cause I'm not getting married--

You've been grand, but I'm not getting married--

Don't just stand there, I'm not getting married--

And don't tell Sultan, I'm not getting married today.

Go, can't you go? Why is no-body listening?

Goodbye, go and cry, at another person's wake.

Go, can’t you go? Look you know I adore you all

But why, watch me die, like Eliza on the ice

Look perhaps I’ll collapse in the apse right before you all

So take back the cake, burn the shoes and boil the rice

Look, I didn't wanna have to tell you, but I may be coming down with Hepatitis, and

I think I'm gonna faint, so if you wanna see me faint, I'll do it happily, but wouldn't

it be funnier to go and watch a funeral, so thank you for the twenty-seven dinner

plates, thirty-seven butter knives, forty-seven paperweights, fifty-seven

candleholders—

GRAND VIZIER: Now it’s time!

PRINCESS BADOURA (AS ZAMAN):

I am not getting married!

GRAND VIZIER: Here comes the bride!

PRINCESS BADOURA (AS ZAMAN):

But I’m not getting married!

GRAND VIZIER: All please rise!

PRINCESS BADOURA (AS ZAMAN):

passionately

CROWD: Gasp

SELECTED MAIDEN: Now there are two Zamans and I don’t get either of them?

To Badoura
