One thousand cars. You don’t sell that many sports racing cars in little more than a decade unless the package is thrilling, dramatic, huge fun to drive and excellent value for money.

Equally you don’t call your cars Radical, unless you offer something innovative and unique, and that was exactly the philosophy of company founders Mick Hyde and Phil Abbott. They weren’t about to build ‘just another sportscar’, their approach was revolutionary and together they created a whole new niche in the world of motorsport.

Their original idea was to design a lightweight sportscar that utilised superbike technology and in doing so they conceived a car that was faster than a supercar, totally driver focused and intensely rewarding to drive. Radical was the first company to create a bespoke powertrain system for a superbike-powered sports racer. The cars were built not just for the discerning club racer but trackday enthusiasts too, and both types of driver enjoy unmatched levels of support as well as having the fastest cars on track.

Safety was always a high priority and remains so today, with Radical leading the way. It is the only manufacturer of club racing cars that can draw on knowledge from building carbon chassis LMP cars that have raced successfully at the 24 hours of Le Mans, around Europe and in the USA.

But the Radical philosophy extends much wider than just the cars. When the founders looked at the various race series available in the UK, none provided the type of racing they knew their customers would crave. So they started their own, and became the first manufacturer to bring long-format, double-header endurance racing to the club racer, and provided a comprehensive spares and technical support team at every event.

The iconic Clubsport model established the company in 1997, and it is still raced with enthusiasm all around the world. Its success was instantaneous and the full grids soon led to developments, the Prosport added wings, more power and wider slicks, but the team at Radical were never going to rest on their ever-growing laurels. In 2002 they launched the SR3, a genuine two-seater, road-legal track car, that wowed both the press and track drivers all over the world. It has become Radical’s most popular model to date and was soon followed by the compact SR4, a small, light and practical two-seater that proved to be the perfect successor to the original Clubsport.

Then, in 2005, Radical launched the big one.The awesome SR8, powered by the high-revving, 380bhp Powertec RPV8 engine, bringing Le Mans Prototype pace to the national racing scene. The mighty Powertec RPV8 was designed, developed and manufactured in-house, and the car now holds several circuit out-right lap records, including the highly sought prize of the production car record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Radical set out to create a new niche in the sportscar scene offering drivers incredible performance for a realistic price, and their success is born out in the sales figures. Over 1,000 Radical owners can’t be wrong.

24 HEURES DU MANSA RADICAL EXPERIENCE

0706 | 24 HEURES DU MANS

Les Vingt-quatres Heures du Mans is without question the world’s greatest sporscar race, it’s the endurance classic. Each 8.5 mile lap is an ultra high speed test of man and machine. Just completing the race is an extraordinary achievement, but if you are the world’s most prolific sports-racer manufacturer you have to do more than that. And so, in 2006 the Radical SR9 was born.

With the design taken from drawing board to completion in less than 12 months, the SR9 proved immediately competitive, and completed the race on its debut - narrowly missing out on an LMP2 podium place. The triumph didn’t go unnoticed, it was voted ‘Car of the Year’ by Motors TV, and was the talk of the event. It was an incredible technical achievement for such a young business.

To achieve this success Radical produced its own carbon-composite chassis and developed state-of-the-art aerodynamics, whilst sticking rigidly to its value-for-money philosophy. The SR9 chassis can be powered by a range of engines, and has competed in every one of the last five 24 hour races. In all, six chassis have been completed, and even now, five years on from the SR9’s inception, these incredible cars are still racing competitively in Europe and the USA. Finishing in the top 20 (overall) at Le Mans in 2010, with a team new to endurance racing – the SR9 is the ideal cost-effective car for Le Mans Prototype racing.

Just as importantly, many of the lessons learnt from designing and building the SR9, and competing in sportscar racing’s most demanding arena, have been translated into improvements across the SR range. The SR9’s high-downforce aerodynamics, electronic engine management / gearbox control and chassis - which withstands the huge forces imposed by the stringent FIA safety test - all feature strongly in every Radical SR car.

With the 2011 LMP2 Rules moving to production-based engines, Radical’s SR9 is ahead of the game with the excellent Nissan V8 motor already in development for use next season.

Simplify and add lightness.COLIN CHAPMAN

1110 | RADICAL INNOVATION

The Radical way means thinking outside the box, a process that breeds innovation and sets the company and its products apart from the rest. One of the key players central to this methodology is Radical’s chief designer, Nick Walford, who has been with the company since its birth. No area of the SR range’s design has escaped his intuitive design influence.

Among his many achievements, Nick masterminded the revolutionary cantilever suspension system employed on all SR cars. The ingenious pushrod/rocker system reduces weight and endows the SR range with precise, predictable handling. The anti-roll link which forms an integral part of the system is named the ‘Nik-Link’, in deference to him.

Radical’s philosophy of continually breaking new ground has brought FIA levels of safety to club racing, through the strength of each model’s integral safety cell, along with a deformable front crash structure and a collapsible steering column. Radical’s spaceframe design equals the standards met by carbon-chassis Le Mans cars, proved by putting the cars through the same demanding test at Cranfield University’s Formula 1 benchmark facility.

Nothing is ever left to chance, everything is always fully tested - even Radical’s alloy wheels are designed in-house and have been independently certified to the most demanding German TüV standards.

Attention to innovative detail extends beyond the safety measures. Every Radical model has undergone extensive testing in MIRA’s full-scale wind tunnel to maximise downforce and improve cooling for hot climates while minimising drag. It’s this fine tuning and a desire to reach exacting standards that has ensured the SR range of sportscars outperform all their rivals, whatever the conditions.

Furthermore Radical work with leading industry partners, who are all experts in their fields. Intrax Suspension have developed and tested a bespoke spring and damper assembly exclusively for Radical, while Quaife are Radical’s long-time drivetrain technical partner, assisting with the design and construction of all Radical drivetrains.

Shell Racing Solutions offer a package of fuels and lubricants tailored to Radical’s needs, and all cars are delivered with an advanced design of Dunlop tyre specific to Radical, designed to match the extreme performance of the SR range.

Radical continue to break new ground, and are developing plug-in electric propulsion technology for a future range of racing cars, in partnership with a leading automotive manufacturer.

CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENTRADICAL INNOVATION

Wind Tunnel TestingModern Radical Sportscars have aero packages that are very similar to the sportscar prototypes that run at Le Mans. Radical test their cars in the MIRA full-scale wind tunnel to maximise downforce and improve cooling for warmer climates.

All-electric SportscarRadical have been working closely with Imperial College London to produce the SRZero electric sportscar. The Racing Green Endurance Team will first test this revolutionary car along the full 26,000 km length of the Pan-American Highway – from Prudhoe Bay in the far north of Alaska to Ushuaia – the world’s southernmost city.

Crash TestRadical crash test their spaceframe chassis at the Cranfield Formula 1 facility to the same standards as the carbon-chassis Le Mans cars. Radical have brought FIA levels of safety to club level racing.

HAND-CRAFTED IN ENGLANDMANUFACTURING THE RADICAL wAY

12 | HANDCRAFTED IN ENGLAND

A high level of skill and craftsmanship are the vital qualities all Radical engineers, technicians and support staff possess, for without these core talents it would be impossible to produce the products at such a high standard. All Radicals are built at the company’s 30,000sq.ft. Peterborough factory, and the vast majority of the components –from the chassis to engine internals - are manufactured on-site. Quality control of any bought-in item is also closely monitored and checked before it is fitted to a car.

With three to four cars in build every week, teamwork is essential. Once a customer order is processed, internal orders are placed for the bodywork and engine, the remaining components are picked from an extensive stores inventory.

A team of skilled craftsmen fabricate the chassis, suspension, sub frames and crash box, while machined parts that include the hubs, uprights, engine components, even the complete crankcase assembly for the Powertec RPV8, are manufactured by Radical’s in-house engineering division.

Lightweight body parts, underbody aerodynamics, rear wings, dashboards and seats are manufactured in GRP or carbon-reinforced-composite, by a team of highly-skilled laminators and finishing staff. The high-gloss gelcoat finish they produce is ideal for the rigours of track use, it ensures a perfect finish, available in a wide range of colours – it’s cost-effective for repairs too.

The final assembly process is carried out by a dedicated team of technicians and in the final stage the team add any requested graphics, set up the suspension to suit individual customer’s requirements and put the car through its paces on the Radical rolling road.

One of the advantages of such a large factory is that the works race team can operate from the same facility, and this ensures that a constant transfer of skills and knowledge can filter from racetrack to assembly line.

POwERTEC POwERAT THE HEART OF EVERY RADICAL

1514 | POWERTEC

Irrespective of which model you choose the unmistakable howl of a high-revving Radical engine on full throttle will prickle the hairs on the back of your neck. The source of that wonderful noise is Radical’s unique range of high-performance engines, assembled and rebuilt by Radical’s internal race engine division, Powertec Engineering.

Powertec have developed their four-cylinder superbike powerplants to give drivers the experience of their lives – all of which give extreme, reliable power. These remarkable lightweight units have to withstand greater cornering forces than they would on the road, so Powertec have designed and developed a dry sump and scavenge system - unique to Radical - which enables the motor to endure loadings as high as 3G.

The latest Powertec RP development of the V8 series of engines is a joint development between Radical and Powertec; the engine is the most powerful, compact lightweight V8 on the market, and has been extensively developed for maximum reliability in extreme racing conditions. Over 150 RP units have been built to date, all benefiting from an F1 style crankcase design as well as MotoGP cylinder head technology. The engine also features four integral oil scavenge pumps, and it produces unrivalled levels of performance and reliability.

In conjunction with transmission specialists, Quaife Engineering, Powertec have also developed a range of transmission systems for the SR range. The lightweight Powertec Chain Drive System in the SR4 CS incorporates the Quaife Automatic Torque-Biasing Differential (ATBD), with a unique reversing system, while the Powerdrive Gear Drive System developed for the SR3 RS, also boasts an ATBD, plus a reversing gear layshaft and easily-swappable gear ratios, to suit different circuits. A Powertec Ptec six-speed transaxle was designed specifically for the SR8 RX, and it incorporates the ATBD, interchangeable gear ratios and an integral oil cooling pump.

Any car in the SR range may be specified with the extraordinary Powertec PS1 electro-pneumatic paddleshift system, which enables incredible seamless gear shifts up and down the gearbox at the flick of a finger. The combined autoblipper allows the driver to flat-shift on the way up through the gears, and downshift without using the clutch. It’s very F1.

Without question Powertec produce the ultimate range of lightweight race engines and when they are installed in Radical’s SR chassis, they create a package that’s literally unbeatable, and such is Radical’s confidence in their reliability; they offer an extended warranty unmatched by any other manufacturer.

A RADICAL DRIVING EXPERIENCENO OTHER MANUFACTURER GETS YOU CLOSER TO THE TRUE LE MANS EXPERIENCE

I’ve driven many racing cars and bikes, but nothing comes close to the buzz I get from my SR8!JAMIE PATTERSON, 2008 RADICAL SUPERSPORTS CHAMPION

1716 | TRACKDAYS

The race track is the only place to truly enjoy driving a car on the very edge of its limit, and here Radical is king! The SR range of track cars are the fastest, most focused trackday machines available, and equally importantly they are easy to drive. The performance motoring benchmark, evo magazine, voted both the SR3 and the SR4 ‘Trackday Car of the Year’ when they were launched, and the SR8 is the current fastest car around their Bedford Autodrome test track, comprehensively obliterating every supercar and trackday special in the process. Over a 1.8 mile lap – in road legal trim - it was almost eight seconds faster than its nearest rival.

By specialising in producing cars that reward the driver in this way, Radical has contributed to the popularity of the trackday scene itself, and with intuitive, honed handling and grip, it is the perfect car for learning the skills of fast, consistent driving, without the need for a racing licence. It responds like driving a single-seater having the same precise, apex-hitting handling characteristics, along with light controls and powerful brakes, wet or dry. But it has the added benefit of a passenger seat, so an instructor can be there with you to help perfect your lines and technique.

Adjustable suspension and aerodynamics allow the more experienced driver to setup an SR to any driving style or circuit, and the light, communicative steering and pedal positioning give a unique driving experience. Datalogging, in-car video and driver training is available if you wish to push the envelope further.

If you are unlucky enough to have an on-track accident, a Radical’s modular construction and quick-release bodywork means rebuilds take hours, not weeks.

No other manufacturer gets you closer to the true Le Mans experience.

18 | RACING

Racing in one of Radical’s many single-marque race series is the ultimate driving experience, the thrill of battling wheel-to-wheel with over thirty other Radicals provides an adrenaline rush beyond compare, and it has become a draw for both club racers and seasoned professionals alike.

The back-up services are unrivalled too. Radical have been supporting their competitors since the company was formed in 1997, organising both sprint and endurance race series, providing great competition, at great circuits, with high standards of technical and spares support.

This very successful recipe has also been exported overseas, with many of Radical’s distributors now running events inspired and guided by the UK championship model. Radical’s single-marque class structure allows drivers to compete for overall championship honours, by contesting with similar-specification Radicals in their own class. This allows drivers to enter competitively with an SR4 CS, before progressing to an SR3 RS or SR8 RX.

For competitors who wish to experience the world’s best circuits, Radical can arrange arrive-and-drive packages anywhere from Spa-Francorchamps to Laguna Seca, Yas Marina to Sebring and Silverstone to the Nürburgring.

With Radical, it’s not just about the car; you’re buying a complete racing and support package too, and it’s not uncommon for drivers to make their way up the ladder from trackday enthusiasts to taking the chequered flag at a prestigious race meeting.

20 | RADICAL RANGE

SR4 CSAs the entry-level model in the Radical SR range, the SR4 CS is the ideal introduction to driving a car with efficient aerodynamic bodywork. It’s a docile, compact racer, with room for two, and a wealth of options and upgrades available. Making it fun to drive was a priority and yet it also has refined handling and performance that far exceeds any other sportscar its size. The Radical SR4 CS is easy and inexpensive to maintain, but it still offers all of the full-on speed and features that professional racers demand.

SR3 RSThe SR3 RS is Radical’s most popular model, with over 600 built to date. The spacious two-seater chassis inspires confidence and is the perfect road-legal, trackday and racing sportscar. With its stunning performance and easy driving characteristics, it’s Radical most popular track and racing car throughout the globe, from the West Coast of the USA to China, Australia to Eastern Europe. The SR3 RS is eligible and competitive in all of Radical’s single-marque championships.

SR8 RXRadical’s flagship SR8 model is the most extreme track car on the market. Faster than supercars costing five times as much, the braking, grip and poise of the SR8 humbles every other car on the market.

With Powertec’s latest generation 2.7 litre RPA V8 engine producing an incredible 460bhp the SR8 RX is simply the best 2-seater track car that money can buy.

The Radical SR RangeSR stands for ‘Sports racer’; Radical Sportscars has a model and specification to suit every discerning track driving enthusiast.

SR4 CSTHE SR4 CS IS THE PERFECT INTRODUCTION TO RADICAL SPORTSCAR OwNERSHIP

22 | SR4 CS

The SR4 CS suceeded the hugely successful Clubsport/Prosport range, and remains faithful to its grassroots by remaining fast and easy to drive whilst inexpensive to own. Its styling was inspired by the Le Mans-winning Bentley Speed 8 and it is the first step on the Radical ownership ladder. Grassroots competition pedigree and a compact two-seater body mean it’s an ideal introductory track car, as well as being a class leader on the European hillclimb and sprint scene. Just as importantly it is great fun to drive, thanks in part to its perfect weight distribution.

This nimble, agile sportscar changes direction quickly, inspiring confidence in all drivers, and has a strong, safe chassis in line with the rest of the SR range. On its launch in 2004, the SR4 immediately scooped evo magazine’s coveted Trackday Car of the Year award.

Allied to the 210bhp Powertec four-cylinder engine and its integral six-speed sequential gearbox, the SR4 CS uses Powertec’s proven Power-Drive chain drive system, with a Quaife ATB differential and reversing system. This engine breathes through a ram-air induction system for maximum performance, a feature shared with its larger brother the SR3 RS.

“Braking can be left absurdly late and you can pitch the SR4 into fast and slow corners with equal commitment. But what’s more impressive is its friendliness; it encourages rather than intimidates so you feel more and more comfortable with its performance. Even when you overstep the mark, it slides smoothly and progressively, a rare combination indeed.”Richard Meaden, evo Trackday Car of the Year

SR3 RSBREATHTAKING PERFORMANCEAND EASY TO DRIVE

2726 | SR3 RS

A true ‘world’ supercar, the SR3 RS is as much at home flat-out through Eau Rouge, as it is providing passenger rides for your friends around the Nordschleife. It is the world’s most successful sports-racer, with over 600 satisfied customers. The SR3 RS is a sure-footed, highly-developed racer, adept and rapid in the hands of both the novice trackday driver, and seasoned racing professional.

The SR3 RS is powered by the Powertec four-cylinder range of engines, from 1340cc to 1500cc and beyond. It’s a proven class-winner, not only in Radical’s single-marque race series, but many other multi-marque championships around the world too.

First launched in 2002, the SR3 RS incorporates a six-speed sequential transmission, and drives via the Power Drive gear drive system, developed in partnership with Quaife especially for the SR3. With an integral torque-biasing differential, this reliable, easy-to-maintain unit is one of the SR3 RS’s strengths, offering strong traction out of corners. Swapping gear ratios to suit specific tracks is a straightforward job.

Four-pot callipers, with vented discs on each corner, endear the SR3 RS with awesome stopping power.

The SR3 RS features Radical’s FIA-specification crash box and central safety cell, whilst styling cues taken from the SR9 LMP2 car, including the high-nose front-end, offer not only dramatic styling, but also advanced aerodynamics, with a full-underfloor diffuser for leech-like grip. Dunlop tyres, developed exclusively for the SR series, complete the package.

An ergonomic and comfortable twin-seat cockpit makes the SR3 RS an ideal trackday car and endurance racer, with in-built engine datalogging, and an advanced LCD dash/multifunction display. Centre-locking wheels, and optional air jacks mean that, should the weather turn, the switch from slick to wet tyres is rapid and easy.

29SR8 RXTHIS IS RADICAL’S ULTIMATE RACER FOR THE ULTIMATE DRIVING EXPERIENCE

3130 | SR8 RX

A trackday and racing car like no other, the SR8 RX redefines the word ‘performance’ and has no equals. This is Radical’s ultimate racer, and it provides the definitive visceral driving experience. Physics-defying grip, relentless acceleration and powerful brakes add up to a two-seater track car that can lap Silverstone in the same time as a Formula 3 single-seater. And at a fraction of the price.

The SR8 RX shares similar styling and safety features with its sibling the SR3 RS, but it beats with a different heart. The latest generation of Powertec’s acclaimed RP V8 engine, powers the SR8 RX through a unique Powertec/Quaife six-speed transaxle. Coupled with the Powertec paddleshift system and auto-blipper, flat upshifts and clutchless downshift are part of the package. The SR8 RX’s gearbox was described by former F1 driver Alex Yoong, as having “the best gearchange I’ve driven outside of F1.”

The SR8 RX’s new Powertec 2.7 litre RPA V8 engine develops an incredible 460bhp and is suitable for use in a variety of Radical series around the world including the Radical Masters pan-European Series. This was the same specification used by Michael Vergers to set the production car lap record around the fearsome Nürburgring Nordschleife in August 2009.

Driving the car from Radical’s Peterborough base to Germany for the record attempt, the car used the same road-legal Dunlop Direzzas tyres for testing, the journey and the record lap. Vergers set a lap time of 6m 48s – some eight seconds quicker than the previous record, held by Radical’s first-generation SR8 (since 2005). With the best engine this side of a Le Mans car, it has been comprehensively proved that the Radical SR8 RX is the fastest point-to-point road-legal track car money can buy.

“With the SR8 you work outside any road car reference plane, supercars included. Braking distances, turn-in speeds and acceleration rates are all off the scale; you have to recalibrate your brain to keep up with the information your wide eyes are sending it. Despite this, it’s easier to drive than a supercar because it’s so precise and responds instantly to everything you ask it to do.”Roger Greenevo Track Test

RADICAL ON THE ROADwHETHER IT’S SERPENTINES ON A MOUNTAIN PASS, OR SIMPLY DRIVING YOUR CAR TO THE TRACK…

With European Type Approval of its SR range, you can drive your Radical on track and on the road – from the Stelvio Pass and Col de Turini to your annual trip to Le Mans. Radical’s road legal cars feature Euro5-compliant engines, a road lighting kit, road silencing and high-grip Dunlop sports road tyres, to provide the ultimate on-road thrill. Nothing gives you a bigger adrenaline rush than a Radical.

Once on the road, fully adjustable suspension allows easy negotiation of potholes speed bumps, whilst superbike performance and acceleration makes overtaking breathtakingly easy. Even with road-legal tyres and a higher ride height, the grip and performance of any SR model is unsurpassed by any other road car.

A famous road going SR8Many manufacturers take their top models to the Nordschleife to prove their worth. Very few drive their cars there, do the lap, then drive home again though. Radical did, and the car drove faltlessly throughout the entire trip. And broke the Grüne Hölle lap record – for the third time.

Go to www.radicalsportscars.com to watch the videos of the drive and the in-car lap in the ‘Radical TV’ area of the website.

‘Learning your racing lines’ takes on a whole new meaning at the wheel of a Radical. Race Schools are becoming ever-more popular at circuits around the world, and while some road-based cars are suitable for teaching complete novices, the Radical SR3 RS is the car of choice for the discerning track driver. The reputation, styling and fun factor of the Radical is already a huge hit with race school fans in Australia, Spain, Eastern Europe, Middle East and the USA.

The SR3 School Car comes with Radical’s dramatic looks, high-downforce aero and a spacious two-seat cockpit. The SR3 RS can be supplied with two low-maintenance powerplant options; the Powertec 1340cc unit with an adjustable rev limiter, or the Powertec-Ford 2000cc Duratec. Both units have a track record of reliability and low servicing costs. Long-life tyres and brakes also keep running costs low, while dual controls allow one-to-one track driving instruction with complete safety.

The Radical fleet at Ascari Race Resort in Spain is a case in point; providing the circuit’s club members and guests hours of reliable fun on one of the world’s most technical and demanding tracks.

Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Nevada also operates a large Radical fleet running day-in, day-out offering both trackday hire and racing tuition in the heart of the Nevada Mountains – where temperatures regularly exceed 30°C.

Radical’s policy of global expansion, means that wherever you are it’s very likely that Radical has a distributor nearby. If you don’t, then you will have soon as Radical will be actively searching for a representative in your region.

All distributors are required to adhere to the high standards of customer service set by Radical’s UK operation. Every distributor is trained and supported by Radical technicians, engineers and spares staff.

Both new and used cars can be purchased through the Radical distributor network; because of Radical’s high residual value, distributors are always keen to take older cars in part exchange. Demonstrations can be arranged locally and in the UK. All customers are welcome to visit the factory and tour Radical’s production facilities.
