Inside the Blues: Over the next 13 weeks CBC Radio's Inside the Music will broadcast a highly regarded series on the Blues called The Blues: The Radio Series. It was first broadcast on Public Radio International and hosted by blues great Keb Mo. A fourteenth "Made-in-Canada" episode, hosted by Canada's Jackie Richardson explores the lively blues scene in this country. Inside The Music is heard Sundays at 3:00 p.m. ET on Radio 2 and 9:00 p.m. on Radio One as well as Sirius Radio Saturdays at 4:00 a.m. ET and Sundays at 6:00 a.m. ET

In The Square: With the approach of summer and the beginning of the beautiful weather, The City of Toronto is launching their outdoor food and concert series. Niagara Blues: Steve Burnside was selected "Blues Group of the Year" at the Niagara Music Awards. Starting in 1958 Steve Burnside and The Marquis played local fairs and dance halls until discovered by veteran blues man Jimmy Ray from Philadelphia, who chose them to back his touring show. He has been touring and recording since then. His 2007 release,"Story Teller of the Blues" is Steve's most powerful CD yet utilizing both his bands, "The Marquis" rhythm section and "A Swift Kick in the Brass" horns. Steve was awarded the "MUDDY WATERS" Entertainer of the Year Award (aka the "Muddy") from NY's Blues Beat Magazine. Niagara blues fans will also applaud The Niagara Rhythm Section who were named Niagara Entertainer of the Year

FACTOR changes: The President and CEO of FACTOR, Heather Ostertag announced her

retirement at the Annual General Meeting of FACTOR. In her announcement to the Board of Directors Ostertag said, "I have been proud and privileged to have had the opportunity to be part of FACTOR for the past 33 years. The opportunities afforded to me have been incredible and for this, I will be ever grateful. However, the time has come to move on. I wish the Board of Directors and Staff of FACTOR all the best and look forward to our paths crossing in the future." FACTOR is a non-profit organization, dedicated to providing financial assistance toward the growth and development of the Canadian independent recording industry. It was a typical Chicago Blues Festival Weekend: variable weather & superb music, except for the rumour that was swirling about Grant Park. It became official at the close of Sunday evening's show when Buddy Guy came on unannounced to thank Barry Dolins for his years as Artistic Director of the world's largest free blues festival. The rumour was true. Barry was involved from the very beginning, taking over as Artistic Director in year two. This was Festival #27 and his high standards of programming kept me coming back year after year. The blues community owes him an enormous vote of thanks. Musicians Take Note: Working musicians and especially songwriters are enjoying the wonderful selection of high-quality handheld recording devices (from Edirol, M-Audio and others) that have been showing up in the music stores and even though the first generation were costing up to $500, the latest batch have become smaller, cheaper and full of extra goodies. The Zoom recorder was a pioneer in this niche market and their latest model, the Q3, offers a video camera as well. It's currently on special at Long & McQuade for less than $250. Joe Murphy She Moves Me Canard Noir

An institution on the east coast, Joe Murphy has been a mentor to most everyone now working there. His long-running Saturday afternoon gig at Your Father’s Moustache in Halifax has been the launching pad for almost all of them. It’s also become a must-stop for touring musicians and is a must-stop for you. For all those years of service, this is only his fourth album but it is a tremendous one. And he has a special guest: Montreal’s Bharath Rajakumar. They both play harp & guitar but here Murphy mostly sticks to the vocals and Rajakumar to harp. They present a solid program of Chicago blues, with particularly fine performances of Muddy’s “She Moves Me”, with Murphy on slide, Jimmy Rogers’ “My Last Meal” & Rice Miller’s “Sonny Boy’s Santa Claus” among the twelve. On T-Bone Walker’s “My Eyes Keep Me In Trouble”, Murphy solos on chromatic, with Rajakumar on the diatonic harp. Carter Chaplin adds his guitar to the band for John Brim’s rarely heard “You Got Me Where You Want Me”. A Murphy original, “A Little Place In The Country”, sounds completely appropriate here as Rajakumar straps on the slide and Murphy plays harp. They even go live to the Moustache for a rousing take on “If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day”. There is yet more on this generous disc: a live performance of “Five Long Years” with Murphy on chromatic and Garrett Mason on guitar is a must hear and another live recording, from Montreal but without Rajakumar, yields a stunning “That’s All Right”. There are also a couple of songs here from the CBC: Little Walter’s “Up The Line” in a performance featuring Chris Mitchell on baritone sax and the album closer, a sombre original, “Hard Rain”, dedicated to the memory of a friend. It’s unclear here what the circumstances of the song

are but Murphy delivers a most compelling vocal, with Barry Mack on slide & Woody Woods on electric piano. For most artists, the tracks with Bharath Rajakumar would have been enough for one, excellent, CD, the fact that Murphy has added so many fine bonus tracks makes this doubly valuable. For all the players involved here, far too many to list, and all the locations, this is a remarkably consistent production. To get your copy, contact Joe at [email protected].

Les Copeland Don’t Let The Devil In Earwig

How does a little-known guitarist from Vernon, BC get recorded by Earwig Records in Chicago? Well, Les Copeland saw that Honeyboy Edwards was playing the Salmon Arms Festival in 1996 and asked if Honeyboy needed an escort for the Fest. They’ve been friends ever since. For someone who heard Fred McDowell at age 11 and made a career decision right then, the match was perfect. Copeland has performed regularly with Honeyboy & arranged tours for him in BC and now Honeyboy has returned the favour, appearing on two tracks here. Label prez (& Honeyboy’s manager) Michael Frank assists on harp on three more. It would appear that several of the songs here come from earlier, self-produced CDs (should you have found those), with most of the new songs recorded in BC while Honeyboy was on tour there last summer. The liner note describes his music as ‘blues with a modern folk edge’ but the opener, “That Needed Time”, is unmodified blues and a fine way to begin. He is a student of the guitar and a warm vocalist plus he loves to play slide. His tribute, “Ry Cooder” also serves a showcase for his slide skills. “What’s Your Name” shows more of his astute songwriting observations and features some fine harp from Frank. “Riding That Sky Train” pays homage to Bukka White, it’s another gorgeous slide piece. The ‘juke-jammin’’ version of Robert Nighthawk’s “Anna Lee” shows how close the

relationship with Honeyboy is. He’s a master at finger picking as well and “Long Lost Love” could be an example of that folk edge but could equally be termed a modern Piedmont composition. I get the impression that Copeland would not care for such trivialities, however. “How’s That Drummer” is the other Honeyboy track and refers to an ongoing exchange between the two of them, with Honeyboy needling him about the drummer that stole his second wife. The well-chosen title track is a minor key plea meant as much for himself as for anyone listening. The closer was only recorded this past March, on the death of his newborn daughter. “Crying For An Angel” is a multi-tracked electric guitar masterpiece. Erin McCallum Common Ground Self

Big Voice. Big Sound. So it says on her web site and so it is here as Erin McCallum’s singing now dominates the proceedings. This is the third album and her experience at writing, arranging and producing for her voice is well captured. She has the confidence to use her power and range more effectively. The new songs like “In Your Dreams”, “Miss Informed” & “Don’t Call Me Baby” allow her to show off that voice. There are ballads like “Touched Me In My Soul” and rockers like “Right Down The Middle” – all handled with ease. The regular band: Trevor Mackenzie, guitars, Ronald Lombard, bass and Joe Pace, drums, are once again joined by Greg Dechert, whose contributions now include piano horns & strings, in addition to his piano & organ. Ms. McCallum has also decided to play harmonica and it may be a sign that she should think about getting an outside producer for the next album. It might be a useful next step in any event. But as she sings in “It Happens”, people tell her ‘you can’t pay the bills with a silly song’, well I, for one, hope she keeps trying to do it. The web site is www.erinmccallum.com.

Wes Mackey Beyond Words Bluesline

Vancouver-based bluesman Wes Mackey has captured that Jimmy Reed sound here, making for a most satisfying listen. If you’re looking for an example of the ‘less is more’ school of playing, look no further. Mackey has enlisted some of BC’s finest to help out: Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne on keyboards, Chris Norquist on drums & David “Hurricane” Hoerl on harmonica, among others, to go along with his guitar & bass pedals. From the opening “Blues Shack”, you’ll be caught up in that relaxed groove. And on “Prisoner”, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the new formulations of what could have been a song full of clichés. “Rock Creek” is as uptempo as this CD gets, a delightful toe tapper about a party town. “Beyond Words” adds something a little different, with some wordless vocalizing by Mackey & Sandy Scofield, it adds a most effective First Nations aura. Several of the songs approach the relationship wars from a less confrontational perspective than do many others, making the disc even more attractive. “Lines” is a tour de force, a strong lyric about the lines of his face and the life experience that caused them set to a lovely soul melody. Almost as ambitious is the closer, “Full Moon in Lamanon”, the story of getting to a gig in the south of France. You can read all about it at www.wesmackay.com, which reprints his life story, translated from Soul Bag magazine. He says in that story that he has found his sound. I wholeheartedly agree.

MO Blues 4 U Self

A diminutive nickname for a veteran Quebec-based guitarist/vocalist, Michel Ouellette has sent along his 4th album, the trio ably assisted by organ & harp. The songs are mostly original with a brace of covers: Fats Domino’s “Blue Monday”, Keb’ Mo’’s “Anybody Seen My Girl” & John D. Loudermilk’s “Tobacco Road”, all nicely done. The originals have very good lyrics but they’re unfortunately set to some much overused music and hence lose some of their effectiveness. Having said that, you might still enjoy “I Still

Have My Old Guitar”, “The Woman Who Fixed My Car” and especially “I Deserve The Right To Sing The Blues”, which seems a little defensive but is thought provoking. “I Am A Damn Good Man” continues in that defensive vein, with MO protesting as he lists his shortcomings. Dylan Wickens and the Grand Naturals Tattoo Black Little Big

The former Talent Search & MBA winner’s new project is a power trio with some new arrangements for some old songs. Dylan Wickens handles lead vocals & the guitars while Harpo “Fatback” Peterson handles bass, bass pedals & piano and Cassius Pereira is on drums & percussion. They both provide background vocals as well in what is a solid performing unit. There are four originals and one of them, the title song, opens the disc. It seems to be a good one but with the heavily processed vocal it’s hard to tell. This one and “You’re Poison” are straight ahead rockers. The blues standards on the program get some nicely varied arrangements that help enormously in forgetting that so many versions already exist. The performances remind one instantly of David Wilcox in his heyday and in fact Peterson is an alumnus of that band. Of Wickens’ multiple guitar parts, at least one on every song is a slide and he plays it very imaginatively. Willie Dixon’s “Don’t Go No Further” & Muddy Waters’ “I Can’t Be Satisfied” are particularly good. “Find My Way Home” is a standout original. Only slightly amplified, this one has a country blues feel and a lovely melody. The disc dedicated to Giles Wickens and the lovely “Giles Lullaby” concludes the program. The web site, www.dylanwickens.com, says that David Shumka, a B3 player, has been added to the band, so when you hear them live, you’ll get a different sound. Their gigs are listed at that innovative web site.
