This project was done with a partner, Ryan Debold, as a design study paralell to a seminar. The goal of this project to apply the ideasand concepts from the class into this project. The site is a vacant parking lot just south of downtown Kansas City. The

a Neighborhood Pocket Park. A combination of Three Landscape Archetypes was the basis of our design process for this project, to create a balanced and unite park accommodating the range of uses needed by the client. The plan was rendered by Ryan Debold and I constructed the perspectives.

Design Goals:A place for SAVE residents to retreat and reflect in a peaceful naturalistic space.A primary site for SAVE to hold large outdoorpublic events and fund raisersA public open space for the neighborhood to use on a day to day basis, as well as continue to spur on future redevelopment in the area.

site is owned by SAVE Inc., which provides housing and necessities for HIV/AIDS patients and their patients as well as others inneed of a place to get their feet and work back into the rest of society. My partner and I developed three archetypes for the different elements that this park was trying to be. These archetypes were a Therapeutic Garden, a Memorial and a

The two big ideas for this project are to treatstormwater along the line in a way that is artisticand educational for the riders, as well as providetwo examples of how each station can be uniqueto its surrounding context. The entire right ofway for the light rail is designed to catch, retain, and treat the stormwater that falls within it. This

is done in an artistic way that celebrates the everincreasing concern for clean fresh water andmanagement of urban stormwater run-off into theriver. The stops will celebrate their context within downtown Kansas City, taking cues from surrounding architecture and lifestyle, by utilizing the columns of the station and unique benches for each station.

The stations will be integrated into the ‘biostream’ by processing the water the

falls on the roof structure as well as from the upstream water. The process begins with the ‘bio-stream’ beingpiped into an

extended rain garden at the end of the platform, then continue on through four more rain gardens. These rain gardens

will be induced with the run-off from the roof with a drizzling curtain of water.

In heavy events the excess water from the roof will fall into a catch basin of

river rock before being piped under the intersection and then day-lighted into the

next leg of the ‘bio-stream’.

Page 11: 2010 Portfolio (Print Version)

All stations will share the same roof structure & platform. The roof structure will be a butterfly roof with translucent panels like the ones used at the KC live canopy. The panels are 30 feet long and go from three feet wide on one end to five feet wide on the other end. The frame will be made of steel with finished welds con-

necting the elements. The center beam will channel the stormwater collected on the roof and have holes six inches apart directly over each of the rain gardens to create the curtains of water.

What is a Concept? It encapsulates, alludes, represents, and embodies. It conveys the complex simply. It’s the glue that holds everything together; concepts and their development can strengthen many facets of any project. These facets include; overall character and sense of place, the visual image or identity, an overall unity with all the parts relating to thelarger whole, the user activities in the space, and the importance of functional and environmentalrelationships.

The driving forces behind my concept wherebased on the identifying signature of the client and the natural and cultural character of the region. Zometool, Inc. is striving to stimulate creativity, discovery and fun through their toys. The system is based on the Golden Section proportions and 2-,3-, and 5-fold symmetries. These proportions and symmetries along with the form of geodesic shapes are used throughout the space. The proportions of the Golden Section

are used in the proportions of spaces within the plaza as well as proportions of windows and entries. Five-fold symmetry is used in the awnings over the outdoor bar area and the paving pattern nearest to the building facades the main office building. Finally, the geodesic forms are in both the cafe and bar tables of the upper and lower dining plazas, and the form of the curtain window on the facade of the main office building. To define the natural and cultural character of

Pheonix, AZ I focused on materials, architectural style and personal comfort. Local materials and colors were used as well as minimal selection of desert shurbs and palm trees. The architecture exemplifies simple orthogonal form with accents in contrasting color and material. In order to accommodate the primary usage time for the local I focused on the detail of lighting within the space to provide another form of accenting.

Along with developing spaces within the plaza for a variety of usages that could be occuring in conjunction with each other or independently, I tried to exhibit the character of the company and local in as many detail as possible. The process in which I used to exhibit the most comfortable time of day in which the plaza would be used was to use the plug-in Podium in conjunction with a Sketch-Up model to render this night shots.

Page 15: 2010 Portfolio (Print Version)

Due to the way in which Podium produced renderings, there where many cases when not all light sources were rendered and the models lines were not displayed I had to take the rendering into Photoshop to drape the lines and to clean up any unrendered light reflections. This sometimes meant rendering the same view multiple times and piecing together a final view.

This project concentrates on an urban neighborhood, the River Garden, as a node that connects a revitalized Union Depot, a new Eastside retail district, a new Riverside Park of St. Paul, and an improved riverfront. The current lack of connection with the riverfront and the to the regional trail system that connects Indian Mounds Park, the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary, Swede Hollows Park and beyond is extended into the new Riverside Park and then into the

city along 4th Avenue. This connection to the surrounding parks and neighborhoods creates a great opportunity for a new urban mixed use neighborhood. With the proposed development of the River Garden Neighborhood, the Riverside Park and 5 other small urban parks to complement the expected revitalization of Union Depot, St. Paul can create a sense of place and a place for the downtown to call home.

The unifying thread between all of the new elements to be added to a revitalized Lowertownis being a sustainable complex of systems to conserve energy, reduce emissions andthe management of stormwater. This includes buildings being LEED certified, all the newstreets as well as 4th Avenue will have stormwater infiltration swales connecting every other pair of street trees, that will process water from the sidewalks and street.

This is a mixed use resort community on the island of Vanua Levu, Fiji. The project was in the early development stages in 2005, when a military coop overthrew the government which left the owners to halt the project immediately. The challenges presented are the fact that there is absolutely no infrastructure on or near the site in which we were directed to include three golf courses, two hotels, marina, small airstrip, and leave the majority of the site as agricultural. This leaves the opportunity to strongly push for an eco-resort community that will be self serving in the majority of its operational aspects. Represented are the working drawings done on trace to develop a working master plan through my typical design process. I am exploring all possibilities for energy production, eliminating all unnecessary infrastructure and maximizing the number of acres devoted to food production on site.
