Introduction to Robinson Landscape Design

Practice profile

RLD is an experienced design practice with a young and dynamic team of individuals. We are dedicated to combining good environmental planning with excellent and contemporary landscape design, presented in a graphically distinctive way. The practice is led by Tom Robinson, a chartered landscape architect with over thirty years experience in the development of landscape and environmental design solutions in the UK, Europe and the Far East.

We have deliberately brought together an international workforce, motivated by a shared belief in a simple design philosophy:• We take mere areas and turn them into spaces and places;• We do that in a way that can resolve competing functions;• We do that by good design that comes from an understanding of

our client’s needs and the site’s capacities;• We do this and create value for our clients.

As specialists in the many facets of landscape architecture, we offer a distinctive, problem solving approach to every stage of a project: site appraisal; masterplanning; impact assessment; planning negotiation; design; management; and advocacyCreative flair, enthusiasm and intellectual rigour are used to realise the potential that each site and project has to make distinctive spaces that are functional yet full of character.

Capabilities

We offer in part or as a whole the following services:• Site finding and appraisal;• Masterplanning;• Environmental impact assessment;• Urban design;• Landscape design;• Habitat and ecological design;• Planning negotiation;• Public presentation, advocacy and expert witness;• Visualisations;• Management.

Sectors

These services we undertake in most of the private sector and public sector areas requiring landscape architecture, including:• Housing;• Education;• Business, office and retail developments;• Urban design and regeneration;• Transport infrastructure;• Leisure;• Parks;• Gardens.• Visualisation.

At RLD we like to think of ourselves as innovative, highly professional, adaptable, diligent and dependable. We believe in what we do and we enjoy doing it. We are a people based design practice that thrives in an environment of challenge and problem solving. If you are looking for the best of contemporary design, inspired by the best examples the world over, then we have what you are looking for.

Pennine Lancashire Squared Competition: Won: 2009

Our approach was let’s look at those and look at how, by practical improvements, we can improve not just the appearance of the town, but how it works and embed art in the changes we make. Chair of the Judging Panel, Stirling Prize-winning architect Stephen Hodder, MBE, said: “The Pennine Lancashire Squared brief for Nelson was challenging in seeking a framework for public art in the town:

“The winning submission is an outstanding response in that it seeks to integrate urban design, landscape, architecture and art by proposing interventions with the existing fabric of the town. In time of recession this tangible and stimulating investment is surely what is required, rather than monuments and memorials.”
