Adding new movements and conditions to old things generates new circumstances. This is what PARASYNTHESIS means. As far as architecture is concerned, these new movements and conditions may come from new categories, media, projects, or definitions. Through particular objects, bases, functions, or narrations, new possibilities against contemporanei ty could also be derived from the old architectural topics.With the concept of PARASYNTHESIS, 2010 NCTU Architecture Exhibition shows multidimensional and divers design works of Graduate Institute of Architecture byderivation,parallel,surpassingoftheprefix,Para-, such as:PARAMETER, PARADOX, PARADIGM, PARA/SITE, PARALELL & PARABOLIC. The Architecture Exhibition, an annually great event of all faculty and students in Graduate Institute of Architecture, NCTU, is programmed by Prof. Shu-Chang Kung in 2010, with displaying the works of Ying-Chao Kuo, Keisuke Toyoda, Kyle Chia-Kai Yang, and Jr-Gang Chi. Para Para also happens to be a dance. The exhibition planning this year of interactive visiting process exceptionally turns visiting itself into dynamic scenery, spreading the messages and making architecture participating a brisk fashion.

Funded in 2000, the Graduate Institute of Architecture (GIA) at NCTU takes Contemporary Architectural Design and Digital Design & Theory as its research areas in response to the rapid development of modern architecture in the digital era. For the education of architectural professionals, GIA offers Master of Architecture I & II programs to students who hold a bachelors degree in architecture or other major. And for digital design and theory, GIA offers Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy programs, both are open to students with background in architecture, digital design or related areas. As for the teaching and research: in the area of "Contemporary Architectural Design" we encompass both theoretical and practical training, as well as digital and contemporary architectural design and thoughts both locally and globally. On the other hand, in the area of "Digital Design and Theory" we embrace the notion of New Media with regard to the global trend of digital design technology since late 1990, including CAD/CAM, Virtual Reality Cave, Human-Computer Interaction, and Networked Space. The designing works and digital researches by the faculty party and postgraduates have been recognized in international competitions, conferences, journals and exhibitions.GIA has been recognized as one of the top architectural graduate schools in Asia.

The Institute actively recruits young elite designers in Taiwan and the rest of the world, to participate in thecurriculuminstructionsofthefirstthreesemesters for the program. In the fourth semester the professional courses will be combined with those in the design program. The Institute invites renowned and prize-winning architects to lecture courses of architectural design, and also arranges international architects to participate in a one-week design workshop yearly. The Institute always encourages students to participate in international contests as well as international architecture fairs, architecture tour and project internship projects, expecting them to cultivate international vision and environment sensitivity. The program also encourages students in design group to take digital media related courses, in order to foster their comprehensive design capability to face the digital world.

Master of Architecture II (MArch II), a post professional degree, is intended for those who have great enthusiasm for architecture and hold the Bachelor of Architecture deg ree wi th f ive - o r fou r-years undergraduate training. Studios are led by experienced and award-winning architects for students to gain practical experiences. International design workshops are held annually and are directed by renowned international architects. Students are encouraged to participate in international design competitions a s w e l l a s w i d e - r a n g e o f activities including exhibitions, tours and internship programs, for them to cultivate global vision and sensitivity toward universal design. Students are also encouraged to take optional courses in digital media, in order to foster their comprehensive design capability to face the digital era. The PhD program focuses on the research areas of digital media theory and application, and expect to make contributions to the general architecture practice and education. In recent years the research topics r e l a t ed t o a r ch i t ec tu ra l design and computers have been extended from design computation to new media. Hereby the Inst i tute has planned the following four research areas: Digital Design & Fabrication, Virtual Space, Interactive Space, and Design & Media Study. Each object has its special character. Taking objects as the starting point of design thinking, the practice aims to present a humanity design by transforming objects characters and combining humanity. The whole process contains several stages:
Practice 1Telling a Story Choose an object in Chinese Culture and describe its uniqueness with objective words. The descriptions have to be focused on the dimensions of culture, space, material and function.
Practice 2Visible & Invisible Observe the object you choose in detail. Draw a plan, an elevation, and a section of the unique object with hand and write notes for each part of it.
Practice 3 Tectonic Sketch Use 3D drawing tools to set up the objects model, construct all elements, take part the system and draw an explosion chart for analyzing the structure and operation.
Practice 4Naming & User Manual Name this typical object. Consider the possibility of transforming into design. Create a user manual for it. The design of user manual must be a foreshadowing of next step.
Practice 5humanity designAccording to results of previous 4 practices, transform the chosen object into probably space, architectural design, device or product. In any case, humanity must be considered while transforming. Correspond the characters of object to humanity and make a humanity design.

The components and environmental control mechanism of greenhouses are quite simple, but it can effectively control indoor environment and block interference from outdoors. Therefore, starting with research of greenhouses, we try to seek possibility of low-tech green architecture by understanding the design of greenhouses. Moreover, the components of greenhouse are delicate, but they can create wide and open space. We hope to imitate and use its spatial quality. Through introduction of Professor Shu-Chang Kung, we had observed and surveyed the greenhouses in Tai-Ho Farm, Gaushu Township, Pingtung County, and then visited Hua Wang Agricultural Equipment LTD. in Chiayi County to acquire deeper comprehension of components and operation of greenhouses. Lastly we came up with a story from the angles of environmental protection and health, and started our design work in the root of a hill in Xiashan Village, Qionglin Township, Hsinchu County.
A retiring couple without childrens company hopes to make more friends with same-aged people for enriching their life. They plan to build a small village in Reishui, which lets retiring people wanting to keep away noise and the elders without childrens company can live together for half to three years. There are 20 households in this village and the electricity power is self-sufficient. Organic and healthy foods are provided. Residents can cultivate vegetables and raise livestock together. In the common kitchen, residents take turns to cook for the rest and dine together. Kitchen waste will become nutrition and return to farms through compost mechanism.

The site located in Chihshang, Taitung County, is a temporary pavillion which functions as an integrated tourist space for tourist information sharing, local agricultural products selling, and tourists resting. Participant students are asked to observe Chihshang from multi-dimensional angles such as relations between eastern mountains and sunshine, differences among water qualities and contents from different places, soil qualities, causes of famous rice, and customs. They are also required to start taking down complete working notes before field survey. Moreover, they have to finish 10 A3 observational sketches and to record the tools or materials for measuring and analyzing in detail while analyzing the site. After returning to school, each participant student will pick 3 photos of site and 10 sketches for describing his/her observations of scenery and atmosphere in Chihshang and imaginations for site and work as well. With random brainstorming, the possibilities of design are aroused. To correspond one architectural element like window, roof or stair to one adjective like weaved or impromptu makes a new compound word such as weaved roof and further extend related thoughts of design. Eventually with combining observational photos, sketches and compound words, the design is to be accomplished through repeated operating of conceptual model and revising.

The studio extends the exploration of concept of soft in architecture design and urbanism that had taught before. The concept of a soft is been defined as a relative condition that exists in a flux mode, i.e. ever changing state. Dynamic and kinetic phenomenon is one example. Raban s soft city shows that there are two cities co-exist within one geological location, one hard and one soft. The vagueness and lack of definitions of Taiwanese cities are usually been portrait as chaotic and disordered. For example, professor Chao-lee Kuo s Dark City discourse has revealed the rational behind the fuzziness of the Dark, and its dialogue with the light.Our studio this semester is aiming at exploring the state of softness in depth in architecture design and urbanism. We will design a small pavilion on Ha-Shan rail yard as a virtual entrance to the city. The uses of either 2D methodology or 3D parametric designing tools are all acceptable to explore the possibilities.

How do activities happen? What are the relations between activities? To encourage pop music creation, patronage performing talents and teams, integrate relevant peripheral industrial development, the R.O.C. plans to build a large pop music performing center in northern Taiwan with outdoor performing plaza and relevant measures. It is aimed to support development of the pop music industry in Taiwan with the goal of becoming the leading center of the Chinese creative music development internationally and for industrial experiment. The government is now actively pushing for the Northern Taiwan Pop Music Center Construction Plan.
With an area of approximately 7.65 hectares, the center base is located in Nangang District, Taipei City, nearby the MRT Kunyang Station. The principal space design comprises of an indoor performing hall with 4500-6000 seats, an outdoor performing space with 15000 standing seats, exhibition space for reputed musicians, a digital library, a medium and small indoor exhibition and performing live house, industrial communities and incubation space, etc.We are eager to custom design a unique performing space for Taiwans pop music operation and development by taking into consideration all music types and the development trend of international pop music. We hope through clustering and trans-border performance will form the core of industrial development in the future.
