1 Editorial Profile:Ship&Offshore gives advertisers the chance to reach broadly or locally, depending on their specific needs and target groups. In either case, they will be certain to reach the top decision- makers within the maritime industry. For six decades, the Ger-man edition of Ship&Offshore (“Schiff&Hafen”) has proven that strength and leadership results from editorial commitment. A top team of editors together with numerous correspondents around the world ensure that Ship&Offshore always delivers the most interesting technical maritime articles. Ship&Offshore International Edition reaches all major shipbuliders, ship owners, consultants and the offshore indus-try on a worldwide basis. The target group is the broad interna-tional English-speaking marine community with a high level of technical understanding, engineers and managers alike. Ship&Offshore select editions, for China and Vietnam are published in Chinese and Vietnam for their specific readerships. Their main aim is to inform local decision-makers in that specific area about maritime technology, including, or especially, from outside their home country. By advertising in Ship&Offshore local editions, your advertising message will interweave with an editorial contents reflecting your own goal, directly rea-ching decision-makers in the attractive and growing shipbuil-ding countries.

The Norwegian Sea-Cargo AS placed contracts with Rolls-Royce for designs and equip-ment systems for two roro vessels and two options. This marks a new direction in mer-chant ship propulsion.

The fi rst ships in the world to be fuelled solely with lique-fi ed natural gas (LNG) have been ordered by Sea-Cargo AS. On delivery from the Bharati shipyard in India in 2010 the new 132.8m long vessels will be able to carry 5,600 tonnes of cargo on a draught of 6m, with up to 94 TEU of containers on deck and 1,140 lane-metres of roro capacity. An important end result will be a very large reduction in emissions com-pared with a similar ship using liquid fuel. CO2 emission will be reduced by about 20%, Rolls-Royce predicts, NOx by about 90%, particulates will be negligible and sulphur oxide emissions will be zero.Inge Bøen, Rolls-Royce Direc-tor Merchant Solutions, said: “Rolls-Royce is responsible for the overall vessel design, deri-ved from Sea-Cargo’s long ex-perience with coastal and short sea shipping, and will supply all the major equipment and systems including main engine,

reduction gear, propeller, shaft generator, tunnel bow thruster, rudder and steering gear, auto-mation, and the LNG fuel sto-rage and handling system.”The Bergen B35:40V12PG main gas engine uses the pro-ven Rolls-Royce lean burn combustion technology that is the key to obtaining a very high thermal effi ciency and good control in a gas-fuelled engine. It is classed for the load/speed operational pat-tern that comes with mechani-cal coupling to a controllable pitch propeller. Consequently a simple single engine propul-sion system has been possible in the Sea-Cargo roro vessels – conventional in all but the fact that LNG is the fuel.Cold liquid gas will be stored in two insulated fl asks for-ward of the engine room. This space will also house the eva-porator system that converts to liquid into a low pressure warmed gas and supplies this to the gas engine which turns the propeller through a reduc-tion gear and also supplies the vessel’s electrical load by means of a generator driven off the gearbox.

Integrated Bridge SystemsRaytheon Anschütz is announ-cing at the SMM that it has re-ceived an order for complete integrated bridge systems for mega yachts from consulting en-gineers Peter Meyer Project Ma-nagement Adviser GmbH (PMA). The mega yachts will be built by German shipyard ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG (TKMS).

In the next few years, TKMS shipyard HDW-Gaarden of Kiel will build exclusive mega yachts. As a supplier of high-quality navigation and com-munications equipment for mega yachts, Raytheon An-schütz has won the contract to fi t the newbuildings with com-plete Integrated Bridge Sys-tems. The contract was signed by PMA, which is in charge of planning and coordinating the entire electric packages of the yachts.

The scope of supply for the new mega yachts covers four multifunctional workstations (radar, ECDIS, conning) with wide-screen fl at panel colour displays, gyro compass system with GPS and magnetic com-pass, autopilot, steering control based on CAN bus technology, echo sounder, speed log as well as a complete GMDSS ra-dio station including Inmarsat broadband. Raytheon Anschütz holds a large number of references for mega yachts from leading German and international shipyards. Beside the orders for TKMS, Raytheon An-schütz is currently equipping major projects for German yards Lürssen and Abeking & Rasmussen.

A ferry for sons and daughters…

… not for mothers and fathers. This is how Uwe Otto, Sales and Marketing Manager of German shipyard Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) describes the new ferry design concept Icon, which was presented to the public for the fi rst time at the SMM yesterday.

The new ferry is at fi rst glance striking because of its unusual hull and superstructure shape. It appears to be similar to a space ship and the aim of the futuristic design was to create an icon for the ship of the fu-ture. The goal is to make travel by ferry attractive and a pleasu-rable experience, Otto says. Tra-

velling by ferry does not have to be boring and this has been proven by Norway’s Color Line with its cruise ferry concept, a paradigm change which has been successfully accepted by the market.“This shows that in the ferry market you can not only win market share but that you can also create brand new markets,” said Klas Brogren from Ship-Pax, a company involved in the development of the new de-sign. “For the Icon concept we have unifi ed all the important demands on a modern ferry: Attractiveness, comfort, safety, environmental protection and naturally profi tability.”

be varied according to area of operation. Why the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft decided to develop the Icon from its own resources, explains Otto so: “If we want to retain our market share, we must display our ability and willing-ness to make innovations. This is vital to hold and expand our market share in this niche sector against ever-stronger competiti-on from the Far East.”This is why Flensburger Schiff-bau-Gesellschaft employs 25 en-gineers who solely concentrate on research and development. “Tokeep the lead which we possess, we must keep the know-how in our own company,” he said.

Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesell-schaft: Hall B4 (ground fl oor), Stand 450

Brogren believes the ferry mar-ket has very good development potential. “Every year, 1.7 bil-lion people use ferries as a method of transport,” he said. “The number of people who travel by aircraft is 1.3 billion.” In addition, in coming years many obsolete ships will be re-moved from the global fl eet, so a requirement for newbuildings exists. “If Europe had such strin-gent limits on the service age of ferries as China has, then alone 52 percent of all ferries now operating in the Mediterranean would have to go into retire-ment,” said Otto. Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, one of the world’s leading yards for fer-ry construction, plans intensive marketing of the new design to ferry companies in the near fu-ture. A marketing trip to Dubai is planned in the Autumn. The goal is to launch the fi rst Icon class ferry by 2013.The ferry concept is designed to be able to meet the demands of a wide range of shipping com-panies. “As we have not develo-ped the Icon following a conc-rete inquiry from a single ship owner, we had to be very fl exib-le,” said Otto. Ejector technology for the shipbuilding industryThe ejector specialist Körting Hannover AG presents its delivery programme for the shipbuilding industry, which has been expanded in several sectors. Now ejectors with lat-eral motive flow connections are also available in smaller sizes. JIS-flanges can be sup-plied faster due to improved stock keeping. And the final inspection becomes easier by a standardized procedure that is ready to be agreed with Ger-manischer Lloyd. Each ejector is designed in accordance with the regulations of worldwide classification companies for shipbuilding- and offshore industry including GL, LR, ABS and DNV. Each ejector passes a design and pressure test before leaving the works. More than 135 years ago Ernst Körting developed the „Injec-tor“ as a steam jet boiler feed

pump and then constantly developed its expertise in fluid dynamics. A further step within a few years was the de-velopment of many types of ejectors now well known. The wide programme range of-fered today is aimed to supply products with high efficiency and a maximum of environ-ment protection.

The Norwegian Sea-Cargo AS placed contracts with Rolls-Royce for designs and equip-ment systems for two roro vessels and two options. This marks a new direction in mer-chant ship propulsion.
