The College offers the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Sciencedegrees, preparing students for direct entry into the world of business or

for further professional training in law, medi-cine, business, government, teaching, or the ministry. Basic to the success of its program is a dedicated faculty, over 90% of whom holdearneddoctoratesintheirfieldsandallof whom devote their principal energy to teaching. The student-faculty ratio is 13:1.

STUDENTS RUN THEIR OWN ACTIVITIESStudent life is considered an integral part of the education process at Hampden-Sydney. Students conduct their own affairs through a student government elected by them and composed of members of all classes.A student-enforced honor code is a Hampden-Sydney tradition that continues to flourish, upholding the atmosphere of personal integ-rity, trust, and mutual respect essential to the operation of a dynamic academic community. Responsibility for maintaining the system is taken so seriously that students enjoy one of the freest campuses in America, where books and bikes can be left unattended and profes-sors can leave their classrooms during tests and exams. Student activities are numerous and

diverse, including publication of a newspaper, yearbook, and literary magazine, and operation of a radio station andvolunteerfiredepartmentalong with a wide variety of clubs and other organiza-tions. Whether they like drama, music, classical debate, hiking, and canoeing, or even electronics and short waveradio, studentscanfindcampus organizations that cater to their interests. Many student programs involve a strong commitment of ser-vice to the community, such as the tutoring program for area high school students.

The social life of the College is centered around 11 national fra-ternities and a strong organization of independents. Concerts, mixers, movies, and a variety of unusual programs are planned and carried out through a student-run college activities committee.

Hampden-Sydney is one of the South’s outstanding liberal arts col-leges. Nestled in the gently rolling countryside of south-central Vir-ginia, H-SC is the oldest of the country’s few remaining men’s colleges. Hampden-Sydney is committed to the belief that a liberal arts education provides the best foundation not only for a profes-sional career, but also for the great moral and intellectual challenges of life. Students learn that the pursuit of truth is a lifelong endeavor, requiring clarity and objectivity of thought, a sensitive moral conscience, and a dedication to responsible citizenship. As the College’s mission statement says, liberal education aims to assist stu-dents to free themselves from ignorance, malice, prejudice, and superstition; from thetyrannyofintellectualselfishness;andfrom impotence in judging the claims and values of experts. It teaches students to gather evidence patiently; it educates them to write and speak with force, precision, and clarity; and it encourages them to seek refreshmentandinspirationinthefinearts.

ONE QUALITY REIGNS SUPREME: LEADERSHIPFrom the beginning, the College’s intent has been to educate the whole individual “in an atmosphere of sound learning.” The Col-lege’s history speaks elo-quently of the powerful and enduring character of the ideals of self-reliance and service, and of its own two-hundred years of commitment to the value of self-reliant, disciplined intellect in public life. In proportion to its enrollment, Hampden-Sydney consistently is in the topfive percent of allcolleges and universities in graduates listed in “Who’s Who in America.” Since 1776, the Col-lege has provided the educationalexperiencenecessarytoproduceleadersineveryfieldofendeavor, including one U.S. President, 12 senators, 32 congressmen, 12 governors, well over 100 state representatives, and a host of minis-ters, attorneys, doctors and judges.

The 2010 Tigers will have every opportunity to succeed in the ODAC and on the national level with a schedule that includes six teams in the top 10 of the 2009 national poll. The Tiger team offense will need to re-place two starters including team leading scorer Andrew Mahoney, but the Tiger defense and goal position return all players from 2009. The 2010 Tigeroffensewillbe ledbyanexperiencedseniorclassat themidfieldincluding team captain Kyle Jett (2009 Honorable Mention All-American and 1st Team All-ODAC), lacrosse and football standout Thomas Hovis, Andrew O’Shea and Whit Kelley. The defense will feature Daniel Martin, a 1st Team All-ODAC and All-State performer, and Co-Captain Mark Bagby, a senior returning goalie.

Since 1995, the Tigers have achieved a 70% win-ning record both in the strong ODAC and against outside competition. Although the Tigers are aware of past traditions, the 2010 team clearly understands that it will have to create its own cultureaswestrivetowardafifthODACCham-pionship and a 9th NCAA Tournament berth. ATTACKThe Tigers graduated senior stand-out Andrew Mahoney, the team’s leading scorer in 2009 (55 points),aswellasastrongfinisherinKenMathi-son (25 goals). The 2010 Tiger attack will return both of the team’s 2009 freshmen standouts in 6-4 Micah Keller (32 goals in freshman cam-paign), and a hard driving and athletic speed-ster in Ben Clarke. Joining Keller and Clarke will be an experienced senior in Kevin Coats, sophomore Nate Cundy, and a highly promising freshman, Ryan Martin (6-5, 215 lbs). Highly competitive seniors Hunter Phillips and Mario Washington will add depth to the position along with a very savvy freshman in Alex Clay.

MIDFIELDThe Tiger midfield will be both experiencedandexplosivein2010. With the return of senior standouts ThomasHovis,WhitKelley, andAndrewO’Shea, thefirst twostartinglines will be determined in preseason. Hovis has been a four year starter in lacrosse and football (one of the team’s leading linebackers and tack-lersfor4years).Hoviswillcontributein2010atbothendsofthefieldas he will be a strong threat on offense as well as being the team’s best short-stick defender. Kelley and O’Shea are physically very strong and among the hardest workers in the weight room, and are both expected to have a big senior season. Junior Dudley Locke also played very well in fall workouts. The coaches expect a major break-out year for sophomore Daniel Deck. At 6-4 with a sub 4.4 forty time, Deck shoots the ball on

At the face-off “X” spot, the Tigers will return with more experience than in 2009 with seniors Thomas Hovis and Whit Kelley. The coaches are excited about the addition of freshman Brad Mostowy. The high school All-American from Atlanta served an extra year at Trinity Pawling School where he led their strong league in fa-ceoffs. Jake McDonald and Nate Norbo also showed promise at the “X” in fall workouts.

DEFENSEThe 2010 team will be returning the entire defense from 2009. At 6-3, 195 lbs and a 4.4 forty time, first teamAll-ODACDanielMar-tin returns with experience and athleticism after proving himself as a lockdown defender in both 2008 and 2009. Joining Martin will be last season’s starters in juniors Peter Foley and Tim VanBenthuysen, and sophomore Andrew Pritzlaff. Pritzlaff, along with Martin, drew our quickest opponents as a freshman and will continue to be a great stopper with good skills andfieldvision.Anotherstrongadditiontotheteam defense this fall is junior Nate Norbo, a transfer from Fairfield, along with freshmanTed Perweiler, a high school All-American at the Hyde School, CT. Senior Frankie McGuire had excellent fall workouts and will also be seeing playing time. Freshman Cameron Shep-pard, a 1st team All-State defender from Kent-

Denver, CO, plays with good physicality and size. Foley, McGuire, Nor-bo, Perweiler, and VanBenthuysen are the team’s strongest in the weight room and will add a physical presence to this year’s team defense. This strong core will be supported by junior Nick West, sophomores Jack Gib-son, Clark Reed, Whit Long and Scott Shepherd, and freshmen Burke Best and Evan Cumalander.

GOALIESLastseason, juniorMarkBagbysteppedinasafirstyearstarteronayoungdefense. As the team defense slowly matured, Mark played execptionally well down the stretch. As a senior co-captain and one of the top return-ing goalies in the ODAC, Bagby is expected to have a great senior year. Junior Ben Hansell will return from surgery this spring, and supports the goal with very quick hands. Co-Captain Bagby is one of the top returning goalies in the ODAC while Martin earned First Team All-ODAC honors in 2009. Hovis returns as one of the top short-stick specialists nationally. Hovis will also be counted upon to be one of the Tigers’ top offensive threats in his senior year, as well as a strong face-off specialist.
