OutdoorIf tents and campers come to mind when someone mentions “outdoor liv-ing,” you have some big surprises coming. Outdoor living may have a casual connotation but that casualness is steeped with style and sophistica-tion. From designer furniture and rugs to kitchens fit for a chef, outdoor living is all about relaxation, family fun and entertaining. “More and more people are expanding the scope of their outdoor living space and are de-signing combined use areas, such as incorporating a patio with an outdoor fireplace. In Louisville they can usually use it for three seasons, some-times four, depending on the covering,” says Cheryl Susemichel, owner of Secret Garden. So you know you want an outdoor living space but aren’t sure where to begin? Don’t worry. That’s where almost everyone starts. First, consider how the space will be used. Will it be an area mainly designed for relaxing or will you use it for cooking and entertaining? Think about how many people you’ll want to accommodate and how much space you have to de-vote to a completed outdoor living area. Plan the flow so that there is good access in and out of the house and plenty of room for furniture and other features such as fountains, fish ponds, hot tubs or other really cool addi-tions. If the space is large enough you may want to divide it into a couple of seating groups, a kitchen, and perhaps a pool or recreation area. As with interior design, style and color are keys. If the house is very traditional, an ultra modern or contemporary outdoor setting would look out of place. Take your design cues from what’s going on in the house and at the back of the house, both in terms of design and color. Pick up some of the colors that are used in the rooms adjacent to the outdoor living area. The colors used outdoors can come from flowers, furniture and cushions, umbrellas, tablecloths and accessories. Don’t forget about lighting, especially if you’re going to be cooking. If the area isn’t covered, options are limited but can still include solar powered lanterns that hang from a hook on the wall or from trees, providing soft mood lighting. Susemichel says there are many lighting possibilities for a covered space, including table lamps and even chandeliers. A fireplace can be the focal point of a living room or family room, so why not make it the focal point outside? Maggie Sasher, of Cherry Valley Spas & Recreation, helps clients do just that. She says limestone, stucco, granite or brick can be used to create sensational fireplaces that can incor-

porate a grill island, seating and plenty of storage. Fire pits are also very popular and are available in custom styles or portable units, ranging from those that are propane powered to those that use logs. Patio heaters, ideal for chilly months, are available in several styles, providing not only heat but also attractive aesthetics. If there’s enough space, maybe you’d like to think about installing a hot tub or outdoor sauna.

Furniture

Most new outdoor furniture is weatherproof. Allison Carothers, owner of Summer Classics, says there are four primary types of outdoor furniture: cast aluminum, wrought aluminum, wicker and teak. Cast aluminum is heavy and has more design detail than wrought aluminum. The lighter wrought aluminum is hollow and is usually used for contemporary pieces. She emphasizes that resin wicker is “not your grandmother’s wicker” and says that because it is offered in three colors, black walnut, chestnut or raffia, it has considerable design appeal. Teak, often used on boats, is the top of the line material for outdoor furniture.

“Many homeowners love rattan, which is actually a wicker weave. One of our lines is dipped, rather than sprayed, in weather coating, providing protection down into the weave to add durability. It also uses a full wooden frame to support the wicker and rattan, giving more stability,” says Stephen Moore, store manager of Casual Living & Patio Center. Outdoor furniture is as varied as its indoor counterparts and consists of sofas, sectionals, day beds, end tables, coffee tables, ottomans, chairs or motion pieces, chaise lounges and recliners. Moore advises that selecting the right cushions is very important, adding that high quality cushions have a life of six to ten years when properly maintained and aren’t left out in the open during winter, although they may remain outside if under a covered patio. Outdoor rugs come in oodles of designs and colors. Many easily fit into green living because they’re made from recycled plastic bottles. Some are reversible and most are easy to clean by simply hosing them off. You may be so pleased with the way they look that you’ll want to use them to jazz up an interior room. Umbrellas imbue an outdoor area with color and provide protection from a glaring sun. Moore says that today’s standard umbrellas range from 9’ to 13’ feet instead of the former 7 ½ ‘, and adds that it’s usually possible to have one umbrella system work for a deck and under most lighting systems. The new cantilever umbrellas are freestanding and swing out and over the area to be protected. The higher quality ones rotate 360 degrees. He advises having at least a 250 pound weight, usually a sand base, to secure the umbrella. For optimal color stability, choose a solution dyed acrylic fabric.

Kitchens

“Outdoor kitchens and dining areas have come a long way from a backyard picnic table and grill. They tend to be a little more expensive than traditional kitchens, but they don’t have to be outrageously expen-sive,” says Lora Nix, CMKBD, CAPS, showroom manager and chief de-signer of Southern Kitchens. Because outdoor cabinetry must withstand weather conditions, she often suggests Perma-Panel. Its tops, bottoms and sides are constructed of a solid polymer material that’s designed for ex-treme weather, but she emphasizes it has a pattern and isn’t “a big slab of plastic.” Any of its seven colors may be combined with teak, cypress or bamboo doors. If you’d prefer something other than polymer cabinetry, Viking’s stainless steel base cabinets and drawers look sleek and professional. Of course, flooring and countertops are important elements of any kitchen design. Nix says there’s a tendency to use granite for outdoor kitchen countertops and stamped concrete or tile for flooring. The home cook has a plethora of options to help prepare tasty meals for a couple of people or for a crowd. At Cherry Valley Spas & Recreation, modular grill islands are popular because they can be designed in many configurations and are available in stucco, brick and tile. They can include a grill, smoker, sink, refrigerator and wine cooler. Some type of grill will probably be the cornerstone of any outdoor kitchen. “Higher end grills have a grate of varying widths. Above the grate is a shelf and a rotisserie with an infrared heating source. If you do a leg of lamb or several chickens or pork roasts and let them slow cook, you don’t

use the heat from below the grates. Some grills also have a searing sec-tion which will throw up a higher heat for faster searing, and some have a smoke box to which you can add different kinds of wood chips and mois-ture to create a smoke flavoring for the meat,” says Susie Wethington, of Trend Companies of Kentucky. In addition to grills that can be linked to the natural gas line or run off propane, some of the most requested appliances for outdoor kitchens are refrigerators, refrigerator drawers, icemakers, beverage centers, and warming drawers. Although she says she doesn’t have many requests for outdoor ovens, Viking does have one for those people who don’t want to confine their culinary endeavors to a cook top. She admits that the only bad news pertaining to outdoor appliances is that there are no approved outdoor applications for dishwashers.

Nix offers these hints for outdoor kitchens:• To prevent heat build up inside a cabinet that will house a grill, be sure to install a liner.

• Hardware, including screws, cleats, glides and hinges must be stainless steel, not stainless over zinc.

Wethington has a few of her own tips:• Don’t forget to plan a place for trash.

• Appliances must be approved for outdoor use

• Faucets are operable in the winter, but the line needs to be drained.

Water Features

Water features can turn an ordinary outdoor living space into a pictur-esque bucolic setting. Noah Smith, of Kentuckiana Aquatic Gardens says water features can be worked into even small budgets, and often helps clients design them in stages to accommodate budgetary concerns and to enhance the outdoor area as it evolves.

“A water feature can be as simple as water running over river rock and disappearing into a pump, or it can be more elaborate, with a water-fall flowing into a pond with plants and fish. Another idea is a bubbling boulder. We drill through a single boulder or stacked boulders and place them on top of a reservoir with a pump. Water is pumped up through the boulders and onto the boulders,” says Mike Blake, landscape designer at Lawnco.

Gardens

For the novice flower gardener, I’d suggest not starting with roses unless they are shrub roses such as knock out roses. For a perennial garden, some tried and true flowers are purple cone flower, beebaum, Shasta daisy, Rus-sian sage, black eyed Susan, They’re kind of bullet proof once you get them established,” says Matthew Gardiner, owner of Boone Gardiner Garden Center and Landscaping. To create the ideal flower garden, first determine whether the garden is meant to be a place to entertain or will it be a place of solitude, advises Susemichel of Secret Garden. Also, decide whether you need to screen out any views, such as a neighbor’s yard, a street or any undesirable sight. Hedges, small trees, fencing, stone walls or lattices all help obscure un-wanted views. Gardiner encourages gardeners to always keep color in mind. Plant flowers so that their colors coordinate well together. Work in ornamen-tal grasses to add seasonal interest. Height is very important. Tall plants should be planted behind shorter ones to allow all of them to best display their colors and textures.

Susemichel says it isn’t hard to design a beautiful flower garden if you keep in mind a few considerations:• Create a focal point in the garden. It could be a piece of statuary, a group-ing of furniture, a single bench, a fountain or pond, or an ornamental tree. • Select the floor for the garden area, avoiding slippery surfaces. Possible choic-es include grass, wood chips, pea gravel, brick or stone or wood decking. • The sitting area should have comfortable chairs with cushions and pillows.

• Choose your favorite part of the garden to highlight with lighting. Light-ing can be effectively cast on statuary, ornamental trees, plaques and other accessories. Use good quality low voltage outdoor lights, and put the lights on timers. Lanterns work well and are great when entertaining. Candles are also very pretty when grouped in terra cotta trays.

• Lead your guests down intriguing pathways. Use a medium that fits with your landscaping. For example, an informal garden could have cedar logs as an edging with wood chips as the surface. Nestle surprises along the pathway, such as a piece of statuary tucked in the bushes or a set of urns under a tree. Use interesting stepping stones.

Page 20: 2010 Louisville Home Garden & Remodeling

Louisvi l le Home, Garden & Remodeling 20

• Fountains and water gardens are wonderful ways to add drama. Birds love the sound of running water, and the sounds of singing birds add en-joyment to your outdoor living space.

• Use small garden ornaments throughout the space. Place them on rails of the deck, on top of a rock or attached to a fence.

• Topiaries add a lot of interest to a garden. They can take the form of shrubbery that has been formed or free standing frames in the shapes of obelisks, standards or animal shapes.

• Potting sheds create magic in the garden. Place pottery, plants, bells, window boxes and other art on the outside walls. Create seating nearby so visitors can sit and talk to you while you work. If you don’t have space for a potting shed, use a bench or a shelf attached to a fence as a temporary work space.

Gardiner says “vegetable gardens have really taken off because they can save money and the homeowner can control what’s put on the vegeta-bles. Also, they’re fun for young families, and are a terrific way to teach children about food at an early age.” “It helps to build a raised planter, maybe 6’ x 6’ or 10’ x 10’. Use planks of wood to raise it about 8” off the ground. Fill with dirt and amend the soil with top soil, compost and possibly manure” he says. Susemichel also offers some valuable guidelines for vegetable gardens. Even experienced gardeners may glean a few tips to grow healthier, tastier veggies!

• Choose a location that receives 6 to 8 hours of sunlight a day. If space is limited, you can have a container garden. Window boxes or pots can be used for herbs. Tomatoes and peppers can grow in large tubs or pots.

Planting tomatoes in a pot surrounded by basil looks pretty and keeps some pests off. • Assess the quality of the soil. Kentucky is known for its clay, rocky soil. Take a sample of your soil to the County Extension Agency for an analy-sis. When you get the result, they will suggest what you will need to add to the soil to achieve the proper pH balance. • Decide what you want to grow. Grow only the vegetables you and your family enjoy eating. Start small and increase the size after the success of your first garden. • Recommended vegetables for the first garden are tomatoes, peppers, onions, lettuce, radishes, herbs and bush beans. Plant only two to three tomato plants and two to three pepper plants. One of the biggest mistakes new gardeners make is planting too many of each plant. • Follow the directions on seed packets for proper spacing and planting depths. Either start the tomato and pepper seeds indoors six weeks before our last frost, usually around the first of May, or purchase these plants from a local nursery for planting the first week of May.• Be sure to keep the garden watered during weeks with no rain, and keep the weeds under control. Pick the ripe vegetables daily to promote new blooms on the plants.

• Don’t forget to accessorize your garden. Make a scarecrow out of wood or topiary frames. Save old gardening clothes, hats and gloves to dress your gardening angel. A bird house is a great touch and will reduce the bug population.

• When designing an herb garden include an armillary or a sundial on a pedestal for a look of timeless beauty.

Top 101. Kitchens“Updating the kitchen gives you the biggest bang for your buck and gives a new look for the space that’s usually the most used room in the house. Anything that modernizes a kitchen is a home run,” says Cadden. Fackler suggests replacing the countertops, sink and faucet for a simple redo that doesn’t get into structural and plumbing issues. Granite is the leading choice of countertop materials, although quartz is an attractive alternative. To add visual interest, coordi-nate two colors of granite instead of using only one. Fackler says that another idea is to use honed granite on some surfaces and the standard polished granite on others to add depth and dimension. Changing out the appliances for a new look to an old kitchen. Replacing one oven with a double oven may make life in the kitch-en much easier and will allow you to try out more of those reci-pes you’ve been collecting! While you’re thinking about a kitchen makeover, you might want to install a beverage center or a feature such as a warming drawer, or pot filler. Most importantly, think about how you use the kitchen and how it will best suit your family’s needs, and design or modify it ac-cordingly. A kitchen may look great and have all the latest accou-trements, but it is a successful design only if you love it and invites you to use it with ease and efficiency.

2. BathroomsYou can update the bathroom on a budget or you can blow the bank and have something breathtaking,” says Cadden. “Replacing the van-ity and countertop, toilet and fixtures can go a long way.” According to Fackler, renovating the bathroom is one of the better dollar-for-dollar returns. He says a common request is to remove the whirlpool, and sometimes, even the standard tub, and replace it with an expanded glass-enclosed shower. “It totally changes the look of the bathroom and seems to be in keeping with today’s lifestyles. The shower can have lots of bells and whistles such as rainheads, water-falls and body sprays.” Travertine is the overwhelming choice of bathroom flooring, of-ten accompanied by a floor heating element. For simple but immediately noticeable changes, add some trim and replace faucets as well as the cabinet hardware. Remodelers and interior designers report that polished brass is phasing out in popu-larity. Oil rubbed bronze and satin nickel are finding their ways into newer bathrooms.

3. Plumbing and HVAC“I think of modernization in terms of appearances and in regard to function and efficiency. I often advise upgrading the HVAC to a geothermal system for both of those reasons. He also says an up-grade of the hot water system to a high efficiency gas or electrical unit, or possibly geothermal, is an important eco-friendly move and can reduce energy costs. Such a modification may qualify for a tax credit. For large families, an instant water heater is ideal because it heats on demand, resulting in an endless supply of hot water. To significantly improve the comfort of the home, you may want to add a steam humidifier.

Ideas for Modernizing Your Home

The Pros’

by Nancy MillerWhether your home needs to be more functional or because you want it to have a personality with pizzazz, there are myriad ways to update without breaking the bank. Four top Louisville remodelers share their advice so that you can modernize your home with impressive aesthetic and functional results. Our panel of pros includes Carl Baker, president of Sterling Development; Michael Cadden owner of Promaster Con-tractor; Phil Fackler, president of Fackler Homes; and John Miranda, partner in Pinnacle Properties of Louisville.

Page 25: 2010 Louisville Home Garden & Remodeling

6. safetyBaker thinks integrating the latest safety features is a critical step to home modernization. Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detec-tors are inexpensive and are instrumental in saving lives and prop-erty. But there are other safety devices to include in modernization. “Typically, older homes have no ground fault, or if they have one, it's a breaker at the panel which isn’t totally effective. All homes should be equipped with ground fault plugs, also called ground fault inter-rupters,” he says.

5. FlooringFlooring is an excellent way to change the look of a house. Hard-wood can get expensive but it gives a warm look, holds up well and increases the value of the house,” says Cadden. Exotic woods such as tiger wood and Santo mahogany are beauti-ful but can be pricey. Alternatives could be American exotics, per-haps walnut or hickory. Much of the big news in hardwood is about wider widths and hand scraped boards. Take a look at some new ceramic tile that resembles natural stone but is less expensive and requires less maintenance. To jazz up a tile floor, designers often use accent pieces of metal, glass and stone.

4. Façade Baker says that the exteriors of older homes tends to be more practi-cal than those of later years and typically have straight lines that can be greatly embellished with the addition of a front porch or dormers added onto the roof. For a home with siding, he says the installation of brick on the façade will completely change the character of the house. Cadden recommends replacing old windows with new insulated ones, increasing energy savings and improving the appearance of the exterior. He also suggests investing in some well designed landscap-ing and, perhaps, outdoor lighting to transform a house’s exterior and provide more curb appeal.

7. Patios, Porches and DecksA new patio, porch or deck, whether simple or elaborate, transforms the look of a home and encourages the family to spend more time outside. Cadden recommends stamped concrete or exposed aggre-gate for a porch when the budget is low. Brick and limestone look great but can cause the cost to creep up. A fire pit or fireplace will add considerable character. Outdoor fur-niture and a grill can easily dress up the outside space and make it the perfect outdoor living place for family gatherings and entertaining.

8. energy AuditMiranda considers having an energy audit done on a home a key ele-ment of modernization. “For a few hundred dollars, a H.E.R.S. rater can suggest relatively inexpensive steps to take to make the home more energy efficiency, and will take into consideration available tax credits,” he says. To locate an auditor, visit the Home Builders As-sociation of Louisville website, www.hbal.com.

10. LightingLighting upgrades come in many forms but should encompass gen-eral, task and decorative lighting. Certain types of lighting, such as a stunning new chandelier or other fixture, can be the focal point of a room. When modernizing the lighting in your home, you may want to look into some of the new sophisticated systems that control light-ing throughout the house. The lighting system can even be integrated with the security system, heating and air conditioning and audio vi-sual equipment.

9. PaintOne of the quickest, easiest, least expensive and most visible changes comes in a can. Painting a room can turn it from drab to exquisite, from boring to exciting. It’s even something you can do yourself, or you can make it a family project. Choose a great new color, grab a brush and get to work. A new look is only hours away.

Rain BarrelsRain barrels are one of Mother Nature’s best helpers. They collect and store rain water from the rooftop. When you’re ready to water your garden or lawn, the water is just waiting for you. These Blue rain barrels are crafted from locally recycled 55 gallon food grade barrels that once contained maple syrup or ketchup. Blue Grass Green cleans them and adds two overflow fittings and a hose spigot for gardening and a downspout connec-tor that hooks up to the gutter. $55. Custom fittings for connecting multiple rain barrels and larger overflows are available. Bluegrass Green, 804 E. Market Street, Louisville, Kentucky. 502-365-3373. Do-it-yourselfers may like Kelvin Cooperage’s old bourbon barrels that can be turned into rain barrels. You’ll need to bore a hole in the head of the barrel and add a spigot and accessories. $100. www.kelvincooperage.com 502-366-5757. Youth Build, a non-profit community youth group has added spigots and overflow tubes to rain barrels. All you have to do is pick them up at the Louisville Nature Center, take them home and wait for rain. $70 each or $65 each for two or more. 3745 Illinois Avenue, 502-458-1328.

How Energy Efficient are you?

Lighting• To save up to $27 a year, change your five most-used light bulbs to energy-efficient compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. The more bulbs you change, the more you'll save.

• Use light-colored, loose-weave curtains on windows to allow daylight to filter in while maintaining privacy.

• Three-way lamps make it easier to keep lighting levels low when brighter light is not necessary.

• Use task lighting. Focus the light where you need it so you are not brightly lighting an entire room.

• Turn off lights when they are not in use. Consider using timers to reduce the amount of time your lights are on.

• Use dimmers, motion sensors or occupancy sensors to automatically turn on or off lighting as needed.

• Use ENERGY STAR qualified light fixtures and bulbs.

Heating and Cooling• To save up to 12% on your energy bill, use a programmable thermostat.

• Save up to $45 a year by adjusting your thermostat - up two degrees in the summer; down two degrees in the winter.

• Save $50 a year by having your HVAC system professionally inspected.

• Clean or replace furnace filters every 30 days. (The day you receive your bill from us can serve as a good reminder that it's time to clean or replace the filter on your furnace.)

• Clean registers, baseboard heaters and radiators as needed. Be sure to move furniture, carpeting or drapes so they are not blocking the registers, heaters or radiators.

• Fans help circulate the air in your home. Moving air makes you feel cooler, so you can set your thermostat at a higher temperature during the summer and still feel comfortable.

• Turn off fans in rooms not in use. Fans are effective at cooling you - not the room. Close the curtains and drapes at night to retain the heat.

It doesn't take much energy to learn how to use energy wisely. Let us help you find low-cost and no-cost ways to be a Smart Saver.

• Use exhaust or ventilation fans in your kitchen or bathroom only as long as you need them to do the job. Don't allow them to continue to run for longer than 20 minutes or so.

• Insulate your hot water heater to prevent heat loss. You may also want to insulate the hot water pipes in your home.

• Look for the ENERGY STAR label when replacing your HVAC equipment.

Appliances and Electronics• Most appliances continue to draw small amounts of power even when they are turned off. This "phantom" energy occurs in almost all appliances that use electricity, such as VCRs, televisions, ste reo equipment, computers, kitchen appliances and telephones with answering machines. Avoid this "phantom" energy usage by un plugging the appliance when it is not in use or using a power strip to turn off the appliance(s) when not in use.

• Screen savers on computer monitors are not energy savers. The best energy-saving strategy is to set the computer to automatically switch to sleep mode or manually turn off the computer and monitor when it is not in use.

• Make sure the power management settings are activated on your computer(s). ENERGY STAR® qualified computers and monitors save energy only when the power management settings are activated.

• Unplug rechargeable battery and cell phone chargers when not in use.

• Look for the ENERGY STAR label when shopping for home appliances and electronics. It's the government's seal of energy efficiency.

• Wash clothes in cold or warm water; always rinse in cold water. Line dry clothes on clothes lines or drying racks.

• Inspect your clothes dryer's vent to ensure it is not blocked. Not only will you save energy, but you may also prevent a fire.

• Clean the lint filter in your clothes dryer after every load. This improves air circulation.

• Wash and dry only full loads of clothes. Don't forget to adjust your washer's water level if you wash smaller loads.

Page 35: 2010 Louisville Home Garden & Remodeling

Louisvi l leHomeShow.com 35

Water• Take short showers instead of baths.

• Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120° F.

• Buy a new energy-efficient water heater. It may cost a bit more initially, but the energy savings will continue throughout the lifetime of the water heater. Look for ENERGY STAR models.

• Wash only full loads of clothes or dishes.

• Install faucet aerators or low-flow faucets and shower heads.

• If heating your family's swimming pool, purchase a swimming pool cover to prevent evaporation of the heated water.

Insulation and Air Sealing• Caulk and weather strip your doors and windows to help keep the warm or cool air you pay to heat/cool inside your home so you will save energy and money.

• Caulking should be soft and without cracks for optimum performance. • Use trees, shrubs or awnings at your windows to shade from the outside to avoid the heat of the sun during the summer. In the winter, remove the awnings and trim the trees and shrubs during the winter to take advantage of the sun's rays to warm your home.

• Use draft stoppers at doors and windows.

• In the summer, close curtains on the south and west facing windows during the hottest part of the day. Consider applying sun-control or reflective film to prevent the intense summer heat from entering your home.

• Reflect heat away from your house by installing white window shades, drapes or blinds.

• If you cannot make the financial investment to install new energy- efficient windows, make any necessary repairs to your existing windows to improve their efficiency.

• Get an energy audit. Find out where the common sources of air leaks are within your home.

• To test for air leaks on your own, hold a burning candle next to your outside windows and doors on a windy day. If the flame flickers, there is an air leak present that needs to be sealed.

• Make sure you have adequate insulation in your home.

• Close fireplace dampers when the fireplace is not in use.

• Put extra blankets on your bed.

• You have probably heard that heat rises. That said, air at the floor level is cooler than the air at the ceiling, so always wear socks and/or shoes in your home during the winter.

Seasonal TipsSummer • Remember that insulation and sealing air leaks can help improve your home's energy performance in the summer as well as the winter because they help you keep the cool air you have paid to cool inside your home.

• Plant trees or shrubs to shade air conditioning units but do not block the airflow. Place a room air conditioner on the north side of the house. A unit that operates in the shade uses less energy than one operating in the sun.

• Do not place lamps or electronic equipment, such as a TV set near your home's thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can cause the air conditioner to run longer than it needs to.

• Use a fan even when your air conditioner is running so you can spread the cooled air more effectively throughout your home without having to adjust the thermostat.

• Adjust your home's thermostat up two degrees in the summer.

• Whole-house fans can help cool your home by pulling cool air through the house and exhausting warm air out through the attic. Whole-house fans are effective primarily when they are operated at night because that is typically when the outside air is cooler than the inside.

• Keep curtains, drapes and blinds closed during the hottest part of the day to prevent the sun's rays from heating your home.

Winter • Open drapes, blinds and curtains during the day to allow the sun light to enter and warm your home. Close them at night to prevent the chill you may feel from cold windows.

• Adjust your thermostat down two degrees in the winter.

• Weatherize your home — caulk and weather strip doors and windows that may leak air.

• Properly maintain and clean your home's heating equipment.

• Replace furnace filters every 30 days or so. Use the day you receive your bill from us as a reminder that it's time to clean or replace your furnace filter.

• Check and, if necessary, add insulation, especially in your attic and the exterior and basement walls or crawl spaces in your home. • Keep fireplace doors and dampers closed when the fireplace is not in use. • Add blankets to your bed.

• Wear socks and/or shoes in your home during the winter to help you feel warmer.
