Context Clue Tutoring1. Write the following sentence on a sentence strip and show it to the child: In autumn, the weather becomes cool and the leaves change color.

2. Point to the word autumn and ask the child to tell its meaning. Have him or her use a Word Swatter or plastic y swatter to identify words and phrases in the sentence that provide clues about the words meaning, such as weather becomes cool and leaves change color.

3. Repeat with additional sentences that include words with which the child struggles.Context Clue Match-Up1. Write words with which children are struggling on index cards, one word per card.

Write a simple denition of the word on the index card and circle it. Give each child

a card.

2. Have each child take a turn making up a sentence with his or her word. Then have

the other children say the meaning of the word. If children are unable to provide the
