K-STATE SET TO ENTER NEW DECADE

Kansas State will play its 35th season of women’s tennisas the spring 2010 season opens on Jan. 30 againstNorthern Iowa in Des Moines, Iowa. The Wildcats will fea-ture one of its youngest rosters in the program’s historywith four freshmen and two sophomores joining seniorNatasha Vieira and junior Antea Huljev. The Wildcats’leadership will come from Vieira and its on-court drive willbe displayed by Huljev, who leads the current roster with asingles mark of 36-42.

Returning sophomores are Petra Chuda and NinaSertic. During the 2009 fall campaign, Sertic and Huljevformed K-State’s most potent doubles tandem as they reg-istered a 7-5 mark.

The newcomers to the Wildcat roster are: KarlaBonacic, Carmen Borau Ramos, Maryna Chumak andAna Gomez Aleman. The group of four freshmen gainedvaluable experience during their first fall campaign inManhattan and finished with a combined record of 12-25.The group closed the fall on a high note with an 8-5 markin the final event.

Leading this young group will be head coach SteveBietau. The all-time winningest women’s tennis coach inschool history, Bietau enters his 26th season at the helm ofthe K-State program. Prior to the start of spring practices,Bietau took the time to answer some questions about the2010 season.

Q: Did you feel the team made improvements duringthe fall season? If so, how?Head Coach Steve Bietau: There were three main areaswe emphasized this fall: fitness, leadership, and makingthe transition to college tennis - since we have such a largefreshman class. There was significant progress in each one.

Q: Will the size of your roster allow you to be more cre-ative with lineup combinations before you enter thespring schedule?HCSB: There is definitely more competition within thisteam and that’s something that helps us everyday. I amlooking forward to having a few more options.

Q: How has Natasha emerged as a leader for this team?HCSB: Natasha is a nose to the grindstone, hardworkingteam member who loves the sport of tennis. There is nomagic to it, she’s smart and she works very hard.

Q: Do you feel the doubles team of Huljev and Sertichas grown together to become your top doubles teamentering the spring? Have other double pairs caughtyour eye?HCSB: In their best matches this fall, Nina and Anteaproved they can play very well. They will need to show thatthey can play on a consistent basis. Petra Chuda has madegreat progress in a lot of areas this fall. The combination ofPetra and Karla Bonacic shows some promise. Getting ourdoubles teams set will be one of our priorities when thespring season starts.

Q: How do you see your singles lineup shaking out asyou enter the spring schedule?HCSB: It’s normal to see players make significant progressin their play between the beginning of the year and thepoint where we are playing every week. Obviously somewill make more than others. So I am comfortable lettingthe lineup work itself out.

Q: Did you see improvements in the freshmen as thefall season continued?HCSB: The potential is there for this group to be verygood, but I don’t think we really know the answer to thisquestion until we get into the spring. Physically, they haveworked very hard and they have experienced the normalups and downs of players making the transition from jun-ior tennis to college tennis. As a group, there are a lot ofgood possibilities.

BIG 12 CONFERENCE

The Big 12 Conference has established a consistentlevel of national success on the field and in the classroomas it enters its 14th season in 2009-10.

Since it began play in 1996-97, the Conference canboast of 34 team crowns and over 400 individual NCAAChampionships. The success continued through 2008-09as Texas A&M captured national titles in men’s golf as wellas men’s and women’s outdoor track & field. The leagueplaced two teams in the Bowl Championship Series for thefifth time and had a team play for the BCS NationalChampionship for the sixth season. In addition, two volley-ball teams advanced to the semifinals of the NCAAChampionship and Oklahoma played in the Women’s FinalFour. Missouri softball and Texas baseball punched ticketsto the College World Series.

Among individual honors, Sally Kipyego (Texas Tech)became the first NCAA Division I female or male runner towin three consecutive cross country national champi-onships. She was named the Honda Award winner for thethird season as the nation’s top female cross country ath-lete, becoming just the eighth athlete to win the awardthree times in any sport. Jenny Barringer (Colorado)claimed the Honda Award for Track & Field while OleksandrNedovyesov (Oklahoma State) was named ITA/Campbell’sTennis Player of the Year.

For the fourth time in its 13-year history a Big 12 stu-dent-athlete won the Heisman Trophy. The Big 12 alsoestablished a high-water mark, as for the first time in the74-year history of the Heisman Trophy four of the top fivevote-getters hailed from the same conference, includingaward-winner Sam Bradford (Oklahoma).

Over the past five seasons a total of 13 NCAA trophieshave been hoisted by Big 12 institutions, with at least onenational crown won in all but one year for the Conference, including each of the past 12 seasons.

The Big 12 leads all conferences with its six appear-ances in BCS title games. League squads have played forthe football national championship six times in the lastnine years with berths in 16 BCS games overall, includingtwo each in 2007 and 2008. The Big 12 led all conferenceswith five teams ranked in the final 2008 BCS Standings. Inaddition, an all-time high nine league players earned con-sensus All-America recognition this past season, morethan any other conference.

In basketball, 10 women’s and nine men’s teams haveadvanced to their respective Final Fours in the past eightseasons as the Big 12 continues its place among the eliteintercollegiate athletic conferences. The six men’s FinalFour participants since 2002 are tied for the most of anyconference. Numerous national honors have been won bybasketball student-athletes during the league's history. The Big 12 had a national player of the year honoree forthe third straight year when Blake Griffin (Oklahoma) wasthe consensus winner in 2008-09. Courtney Paris(Oklahoma) gave the conference a consensus All-Americaselection in women’s basketball for the ninth straight sea-son.

The Big 12 and its member institutions are committedto a competitive environment where sportsmanship andfair play take center stage. Whether on the field, in theclassroom, or within the community the student-athletes,administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12support the highest ideals in sportsmanship.

Big 12 student-athletes also do well in garneringnational academic recognition. Sarah Pavan (Nebraska)was named Academic All-America of the Year in volleyballin 2006 and 2007 by ESPN The Magazine and CollegeSports Information Directors of America with a 4.0 grade-point average in Biochemistry. She also won the nationalacademic honor presented for all sports in 2006-07 andwas named recipient of the prestigious 2006-07 Honda-Broderick Award as Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. She is the first athlete since the Big 12 was formed to earnthe accolade. In its history, the conference has over 330academic honorees, averaging more than 25 each season.

The Big 12 can boast of other stories that combine onand off the field success. Patience Knight (Texas Tech) wasthe recipient of the Honda Inspiration Award in 2008,

given to an outstanding female college athlete who over-comes adversity to excel in her sport. She was diagnosedwith a cancerous tumor in 2007, but rebounded to win All-America honors at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track & FieldChampionships.

Competitive excellence, scholarship and sportsman-ship are all equal components of the Big 12 philosophy.All-Big 12 teams and Academic All-Big 12 squads are rec-ognized for each sport at the end of their respective sea-sons.

At the end of each academic year, the Conference hon-ors its top male and female student-athletes with the Big12 Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Sportsperson of the Yearawards.

Institutions can also nominate student-athletes for theprestigious Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarshipsat the end of each academic year. A total of 225 scholarshave received over 1.3 million in postgraduate financial aidthrough the first 13 years of the program.

The Big 12 sponsors 21 sports. Men’s squads includebaseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoortrack & field, outdoor track & field, swimming & diving, ten-nis and wrestling. Women’s teams are fielded in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, indoor track & field, out-door track & field, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis andvolleyball.

The conference is made up of 12 institutions that haveshared many traditional rivalries throughout their histo-ries. Member schools include - Baylor University,University of Colorado, Iowa State University, University ofKansas, Kansas State University, University of Missouri,University of Nebraska, University of Oklahoma, OklahomaState University, University of Texas, Texas A&M Universityand Texas Tech University.

The institutions created a league that encompassesseven states, over 45 million people and television house-holds in 18 of the top 100 markets within its geographicfootprint.

The conference conducts championships for 20 of its 21sports. Each championship helps to determine teamsand/or individuals that will represent the Conference innational postseason competition. The winner of the Big 12football championship game earns the league’s berth intothe prestigious Bowl Championship Series.

In the last several years the Big 12 has increased itsbowl agreements and expanded television opportunitiesfor all sports through contracts with ABC/ESPN and FSN.Most recently, the league renewed and expanded its multi-year arrangement with ABC/ESPN, Inc. The new contractbegan in 2008-09.

In its first 13 years, the Conference has distributed morethan $1.1 billion to its 12 member institutions.

ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION

John Currie, who was introduced as KansasState’s 15th Director of Athletics on May 18, hasemphasized the importance of accessibility andaccountability early in his tenure as K-State sets itssights on achieving the vision of having a modelintercollegiate athletics program.

A highlight of Currie’s early initiatives was theimplementation of the “K-State Pledge” in Julywhich includes a series of financial accountabilitymeasures and core values that will serve as thefoundation of K-State’s vision. Among those val-ues are five goals: a world-class student-athleteexperience; value to the University, city and state;integrity and transparency in relation to ethics, finance and NCAA compliance; championship-level athletic performances; and the best fanexperience in the Big 12.

In an effort to create the best fan experiencepossible, Currie’s staff created new ticket initia-tives for football that led to the largest home-opening crowd in Bill Snyder Family Stadium his-tory on September 5, 2009 (50,750). In his first 60days on the job, Currie also worked to establishrelationships across campus, through steps suchas personally visiting with K-State deans in theirrespective offices. He also serves as a member ofPresident Kirk Schulz’s cabinet and has made pre-sentations and held question and answer sessionswith many other campus organizations.

Currie also immediately implemented a com-munications plan in an effort to regain the trust ofall Wildcat fans, which included in-person stopsthroughout the state, regular online letters andchats and K-State’s first-ever FanForum confer-ence call, which saw more than 3,000 fans partici-pate.

Understanding the importance of coachingcontinuity in building successful programs, Curriemoved quickly to sign 2009 Big 12 Baseball Coachof the Year Brad Hill to a contract extension andalso led the effort to complete the five-year con-tract for legendary returning football coach BillSnyder.

Currie began his duties as Athletics Director onJune 8 after 10 years at the University ofTennessee, most recently serving as ExecutiveAssociate Athletics Director for Athletic DirectorMike Hamilton. Currie was responsible for thedirect management of units that annually pro-duced $84 million in revenue and gifts, includingthe department’s fundraising, marketing, ticket-

An integral member of the facility planningteam for UT’s $200 million master plan renova-tions for Neyland Stadium, Currie also directed a$36 million arena renovation and basketball prac-tice facility construction project that was complet-ed in the fall of 2007. He developed and imple-mented the revenue models to fund both projectswithout outside funding from the state or localgovernment, tax dollars or University-derivedsupport.

Currie’s accomplishments at Tennessee includ-ed helping the University secure a $50 millioncommitment in 2006 for academic and athleticneeds, a gift which represented the largest froman individual in Tennessee history. Units under hisdirection also negotiated an $84 million multi-media rights contract with then-HostCommunications, and a $19.3 million all-sportcontract with Adidas. Under his leadership, givingto Tennessee athletics more than doubled from$19.5 million in 2003 to $41.6 million in 2008.

Currie led the negotiation and implementationof new student season ticket sales for football in2008, resulting in $900,000 of new departmentrevenue in its first year. He also implemented newregular-season football sales strategies thathelped Tennessee set a new single-game atten-dance record of 109,061 in 2004.

Tennessee’s athletic facilities as a whole benefit-ted from Currie’s efforts as the development officesecured individual-naming recognition gifts thatincluded $4 million for a new aquatic center, $2million for a new softball stadium, $1.5 million fora new soccer stadium and $2 million for baseballrenovations. Tennessee’s track complex also wasrenovated, while ground was broken last summerfor a new Greg Norman-designed intercollegiategolf practice complex and clubhouse.

Currie oversaw the development and executionof a comprehensive marketing plan in 2005 thatled to attendance at SEC home basketball gamesimproving 54 percent from the previous year, while student attendance increased by 197 per-cent.

Currie joined the Tennessee staff in 1997 asExecutive Director of the Volunteer AthleticScholarship Fund (VASF). Following a two-yearstint as Assistant Athletics Director at Wake Forest,Currie returned to Knoxville in 2000 as AssistantAthletics Director for Development and served asdirector for the "STEP UP" campaign. As UT’s first-ever capital campaign, it exceeded its goal andreached a total of $48.6 million, $4 million overthe intended goal, with gifts from 870 donors. In2002, Currie was promoted to Associate AthleticsDirector for Development.

He served as President of the SoutheasternConference (SEC) development officers group for2004-05, chaired the 2007 CASE national athleticdevelopment conference and was a member ofthe SEC ticket policy committee. The KnoxvilleNews Sentinel recognized Currie in December2008 by naming him to its prestigious “Top 40Leaders Under 40” list.

He began his professional career at Wake Forestin 1993 as a Deacon Club intern before beingnamed Assistant Deacon Club Director in 1994, aposition he held until 1997.

Highlights of Currie’s stints at Wake Forestinclude developing student and young alumniprograms, creating a new endowment andplanned giving program, managing the coachescircle volunteer program and assisting in the lead-ership of the “Touchdown 2000” football fieldhouse and Miller Center basketball practice/acad-emic counseling facility campaigns.

Manhattan is located in the northern endof the beautiful Flint Hills. The city wasfounded in the first days of Kansas settle-ment and currently has a population of45,000 in the city, 100,000 in the immediateregion. It is a modern, progressive city that ishome to Kansas State University, the FortRiley Military Reservation and several suc-cessful corporate citizens. It is located innorth central Kansas, on Interstate 70, 125miles west of Kansas City, and 50 miles westof the state capitol in Topeka.

HISTORYIt was on Valentine’s Day in 1857 that

Manhattan officially became a city in the

Midwest. And it was only because theKansas River had been low two years earlierthat the city was located where it is now.

It all began in the spring of 1855 when theCincinnati Company left Ohio on the steam-boat Hartford. They were headed for centralKansas via the Ohio, Mississippi, Missouri, and Kansas Rivers. Their goal: to settle atown and name it Manhattan, thinking itmight become a second Manhattan, NewYork.

On the way up the Kansas River, threemen stopped, went ashore, and hired awagon. They drove to what is now JunctionCity, where they intended to start theManhattan of the Midwest. But the Hartford

ran aground in the Kansas River south of theconfluence of the Blue and Kansas Rivers. The Cincinnati Company and all of the smallgroups of settlers already in the area joinedforces to form a town, which they agreed tocall Manhattan.

The first post office was established in1856, and the city became incorporatedFebruary 14, 1857. Manhattan has grownsteadily since then. Although Manhattan,Kansas, may not be another New York City insize, residents of Manhattan of the Midwestthink you’ll savor the savvy of “The LittleApple.”

“The Little Apple” is home to more than50,000 people today. Manhattan is nestled in

among the picturesque Flint Hills, so namedfor their numerous bands of limestone andflint. These bands of flinty gravel convincedmany an early settler that the land was notsuitable for cultivation. A few resourceful pio-neers, however, chose to stay and build theirfarmsteads in the sheltered valleys wherewater was available even in times of droughtand where their cattle could graze on thegrassy uplands.

The Flint Hills region still remains largelyuntouched by the plow and is the last largepreserve of native tallgrass prairie in the U.S.

Today, Manhattan residents take pride inthe local history. The community is especiallyproud of its nickname, “The Little Apple”-symbolic of a polished, wholesomeMidwestern Manhattan, founded by pioneerswho foresaw great things for this part of theU.S.

A TRUE COLLEGE TOWNA student-athlete’s life involves more than

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

The Powercat Strength and Conditioning Program is designed to “build better athletes,” not to develop powerlifters, Olympic weightlifters or body-builders.Obviously, when most people think of strength coaches, they think of weightlifting. Kansas State’s Moore Strength Complex boasts two weight rooms, over12,000 square feet of floor space, 35,000 lbs. of weights, plus platforms, racks, benches and machines. In 2006, the John L. Allen Strength Center was complet-ed at Tointon Family Stadium adding another 1,500 square feet of weight room access. Weight training is a big part of the program, but the strength and con-ditioning coaches at K-State do not coach weightlifters, it trains athletes. Speed development, agility, flexibility, coordination, endurance and nutrition are someof the areas that fall under the umbrella of strength and conditioning. Kansas State strives to develop the total athlete through a total body program. K-Stateemploys nutrition counters in both strength facilities to “fuel the athletes” and equip them to meet the demands of training.

“Our strength and conditioning staffworks very hard to helpour players developtheir full athletic potential. Significant gains are being made in both performance and injury prevention. They help our players be better athletes.”

NICKNAMEThrough its first 19 seasons of athletic competition,Kansas State had used “Aggies” as its nickname. But priorto the 1915 season, new football coach John “Chief”Bender gave his squad the nickname “Wildcats.” Themoniker lasted the one season Bender coached at K-State. Under football coach Z.G. Clevenger in 1917, theschool team became known as the “Farmers.” In 1920another new football coach, Charles Bachman, took overthe program, renaming the team “Wildcats.” This time, thenickname stuck.

WILLIE WILDCATWillie, a student bedecked in a oversized Wildcat head, isKansas State’s No. 1 fan. Willie Wildcats are selected yearlyby a panel appointed by the cheerleading coach. Themascot is a central part of athletic contests, but alsoattends functions around the state as an ambassador.Traditionally, the identity of the student portraying Willieis kept secret.

KSU COLORSThe school color Royal Purple was adopted in the fall of1896 by a committee of “Miss Minnie L. Copeland, Jr. andMiss Winnifred Houghton and Miss Ina E. Holyrod, of thesenior class, and perhaps one or more others.” AlthoughK-State’s only official color is purple, white has been usedas a complimentary color for many years. Silver is also acommon second or third color. Former head basketballcoach Cotton Fitzsimmons incorporated gold during histwo-year stint (1968-70), but gold or yellow has not beenused since that time. The term “Purple Pride,” which isoften used in association with KSU athletics, was givenrise during the tenure of head football coach VinceGibson (1967-74).

POWERCAT LOGOOne of the most recognizable athletic logos in the nationis the K-State Powercat. The logo was introduced by BillSnyder shortly after his arrival in Manhattan as the atti-tude of the entire athletics department and universitywas changing. Manhattan native Tom Bookwalter, in cooperation withhead coach Bill Snyder, created the powerful logo that isa prominent feature on the K-State football helmet, atWagner Field, on the back of the Dev Nelson Pressbox, clothing, flags, bottled water, vanity plates for cars andjust about anywhere there can be one.

SCHOOL SONGSThe Alma Mater was selected as a result of an 1888 cam-pus contest. H.W. Jones (’88) was responsible for K-State’sprized result. Jones’ original work was four stanzas includ-ing the chorus. His version has been slightly altered overthe years to include just two stanzas and the changing ofthe words from KSAC to KSU. The school’s fight song isentitled “Wildcat Victory.”

ALMA MATER“I know a spot that I love full well, ‘Tis not in forest nor yetin dell, ever it holds me with magic spell, I think of theeAlma Mater. KSU, we’ll carry the banner high, KSU long, long may thy colors fly. Loyal to thee, thy children shallswell the cry. “Hail, Hail, Hail Alma Mater.”

WILDCAT VICTORY“Fight you K-State Wildcats. For Alma Mater fight-fight-fight. “Glory into combat for the purple and white.Faithful to our colors, we shall ever be, fighting ever fight-ing for a Wildcat Victory!”

WABASH CANNONBALLEveryone knows that familiar tune Wabash Cannonball. Infact, Wabash and K-State are almost synonymous. Whatmany people do not know is how the song became anintegral part of Wildcat athletics. In the fall of 1969, thedepartment of music burnt down. Every piece of music inthe building was destroyed. The only thing that was sal-vaged was what was in the band director’s brief case. Thatincluded a piece of music titled the Wabash Cannonball. With an upcoming football game and no music, that leftonly one thing to do. The band members played the songloud and often. A song that originally had no connectionbecame a second fight song.

SLOGANSSeveral chants and slogans are used in association withthe team. “Purple Pride” and “Eat ‘Em Up, Eat ‘Em Up K-S-U” were mentioned earlier on this page. One slogan thathas virtually died out is “Every Man A Wildcat.” The termwas popular in the ‘50s, ‘60s and early ‘70s, and onceadorned the front of the Ahearn Field House press box.Since the term referred to only one gender, however, ithas faded. Kansas State, itself, is referred to in many differ-ent shortened versions. The most popular is “K-State,”which is used by alums, friends and journalists from coastto coast.
