Books are the library’s brand.
That will need to change.
C h b d d bContent is what our brand needs to become.
Content and Community.
That already really is our brandThat already really is our brand.
Libraries = Content + CommunityB t d t ff t t i f t t b d b h i l t iBut we need to offer content in formats not bound by physical containers(books, DVD’s, etc).
Gadgets are a big part of the key to that.
Actually, the term “gadget” really is just a name that holds significance, cultural meaning and currently has positive connotations and reactions.
Th l i i l h h h h i i h fThe real point is to get people what they want, when they want it, in the format they want it…through the library, regardless of the interface or device needed.
In this task “gadgets” will be a critical key in the coming decades.g g y g
They really are critical to the success of libraries.
Even now, when our brand is still books and not content.

Likelihood to get an eReader gAmong those adults who do not currently have an eReader, just over one in ten (12%) say they are likely to get one in the next six months. However, 21% are not very likely to purchase an eReader and three in five (59%) are not at all likely. The f t re and predictionsThe future and predictions
-It isn’t smart to make predictions
predictionsIt isn t smart to make predictions.-Amazon will become a larger player in media access via gadgets:
-will launch a multimedia mobile device (imagine something like the iPad but likely using Android OS)I d di h i d ll ti i i f bil d h-Improved media purchasing and collection organizing for mobile and home-Likely larger partnership with Netflix for streamlining access via mobile devices
-Computing interfaces will incorporate more voice and gestural activity, accentuating and possibly eliminating most “mouse centric” hci.p y g-A master mobile device: Imagine and iPad/cell phone/laptop/Kindle combo (possibly with Bug-like functionality). Two display screens (for heavy readers) until eye strain issues are resolved with new display technology.New widely adopted players in both the content consumption and acquisition-New, widely adopted players in both the content consumption and acquisition marketplace as well as the community interaction marketplace will appear and gain wide adoption on par with Twitter, facecook, iTunes, etc. Millions will wonder “how’d we ever get by without that” and “Why didn’t I think of that?!”. y y-Libraries might not remain relevant. -More likely, libraries will figure out how to be more relevant, useful, valuable and vibrant than ever before. This will be largely *because of* gadget related activities and their interplay with human need and what libraries are designed to do But it is up to us youinterplay with human need and what libraries are designed to do. But it is up to us, you and me, to make it work in our favor.
Good luck! Be thoughtful and brave. We can do it!
