Energy and climate change

• National estimate for 2010: ± 850 000 tonnes with additional 1 400 000 tonnes for international travel

• Estimate for Cape Town: ± 180 000 tonnes• World Cup in Germany 2006: 100 000

tonnes• Reasons:

– 5 new stadia– Limited renewable energy– Limited low-carbon public transport

• Carbon offset or mitigation?– Very expensive to offset (between $6 and $12 per

tonne)– Hosting “low carbon games” with focus on

mitigation and avoidance of emissions in the first place

– Mitigation projects funded by DANIDA UEMP• Retrofit traffic lights with LED’s (50% energy saving)• Retrofit street lights with compact sodium vapour bulbs
