Last year was a building year for this season. We

have recruited a lot of new athletes. This year we have small numbers, but have extremely talented athletes. We have solid defense and strong pitching. Offensively, we have some powerhouse hitters and great speed on the bases. Our goal is to make the playoffs this season and improve our game after each practice. I'm tough, but fair. I expect hard work, focus, hustle and dedication to the team. I lead by example and treat every athlete with the respect I expect to get in return. If we all have the same common goal and work hard to achieve it, we will be successful.

Welcome to first-year assistant Storm softball coach Will Jones. Coach Jones brings a positive attitude and work ethic to the program. He will help the Storm "Work hard and progress as a team throughout the season ... and make the playoffs!"

The Storm baseball has a whole new crop of freshmen to join the sophomore veterans leading the charge into the 2010 season. At the time of this writing the Storm has carved out a 5-3 record.

Season OutlookLast season, the

Storm won 16 of 27 Bay Valley Conference games and 22 of 40 games for the season.

Of particular note: all six sophomore play-ers transferred to the

4-year level. One freshman received a scholarship and one freshman signed a professional contract!

According to head coach Bob Freschi, the first step this season will be to focus on team-first mentality and attitude. That is, "to have the ability to play together at a

high level with a reworked intensity while continuing to have a 'Super Storm' fun experience." Freschi promises another 2010 competitive season as 14 sophomore return to vie with 14 freshman for spots on the field. An experienced bullpen will be lead by the arms Steve Traumann, Darius Iacono and Phil Fortaleza. The attack on offense will start at the plate with Andrew Pieper, Jordan Long, Robert Argiro, Matt Weger, Kyle Babb, Ryan Moura and Paul Kent.

Pitching Coach Brusstar begins his fourth year with the Storm. He played with the Napa Valley College baseball team in the seventies and was awarded a scholarship to Fresno State College. He added substantial baseball credits to his resume by playing 15 years of pro ball including nine with The Show with the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and Chicago Whitesox. He was a member of

the 1980 World Series Championship Phillies team. Brusstar believes pitchers and players "should hustle, play hard and have fun." As to 2010, "we've gotten bet-ter in the last three years. We need to continue that improvement. We should be better this year as a team although we don't have a big time player like we did last year with Tyler Cravy. We have the same goal every year: To win the BVC!"

Paul Freitas embarks on his first year as a Storm assistant coach. He is a for-mer assistant coach for Fairfield High School and a coach for the 2000 champi-onship. Coach Freitas said "This group looks strong to me and I'm very excited to be a part of the 2010 NVC Storm. The boys have a good work ethic that will enable us to put an exciting brand of baseball on the field."

Lino Garcia is a first year assistant coach as well.

Head CoachJim Wiechers

The Storm’s Jim Wiechers is head coach for both the women’s and men’s golf teams, the men playing the links in spring. Coach Wiechers capped a 13-year career as a PGA Touring pro by assuming the responsibilities for the NVC intercollegiate golfers.

His coaching philosophy embraces improvement in all his players, both physically and mentally, as each season progresses.

The Storm Golf Teams are allowed to participate in the Big Eight Conference insofar as the Bay Valley Conference does not participate in intercollegiate golf. The Big Eight, as its name implies, is composed of much larger schools that draw

from a greater pool of players than would be the case if BVC competed in golf. Consequently, the competition is a true challenge for all participants.

Season Outlook: The 2010 team looks like it has the potential to be very competitive this year. "My goal," Coach Wiechers says, "is to get the best possible play out of these players. This year’s men’s team has a lot of potential and we should surprise people by season’s end. Last year we fi nished 6th in the conference with James Parker, then a freshman, and then-sophomore Miguel Zulueta qualifying for the NorCal tournament. I wouldn’t be surprised if two or three of our players make the NorCals again this year."

Kyle

Culbertson

According to Coach Wiechers, "Kyle has recently moved to Napa from Lincoln High School (where he played with Coach Brett Lewis) and we are glad he did. He has a great shot at making the top-6 eligibility list for Big Eight tournament play." Kyle is an NVC freshman and a right-handed golfer with a major in Criminal Justice with the ultimate goal of "becoming a cop."

Jordy Hays

Jordy Hays has returned to school, favoring Napa Valley College, with a Business major. He admits to having graduated from San Fernando High School a few years ago. He is also a graduate of SF State. Swinging at a statuesque 5'9", Jordy says that his athletic highlight to date is simply "Playing golf – it's a great game!" And although, as Jim Wiechers points out in his comments, Jordy is an experienced golfer, he still identifi es his dad as his primary role model in his life. Coach Wiechers notes that "Jordy is a veteran golfer and a very accomplished player. I feel sure he'll be likely to make the traveling six. His addition to the team gives us a great chance to make NorCals for the fi rst time as a team." And that is no small achievement in the Big Eight Conference.

Kevin Johnson

Kevin Johnson joins the Storm as a freshman. At 6'1" Kevin swings a powerful right-handed club. A local man who graduated from Napa High School, Kevin identifi es being Club Champion two years in a row at Franklin Canyon Golf Club is a major athletic high light. Returning to school, he says keeping his family happy and living life to the fullest while having fun as a major portion of his goal set. Coach Wiechers says that Kevin has "Strong leadership skills and direction. He is a great team player. Kevin is an accomplished NCGA tournament player and will be contending for the number one spot on the team."

Another Napa High School graduate, James Parker is a 6'1" right-handed golfer who played basketball at Napa High. He's a Communications major at NVC in preparation for his life's major goal: "Six-fi gure jobs." James planes to transfer to either UC Davis, UC Berkeley or Sonoma State University. He identifi es his grandparents as signifi cant role models. Coach Wiechers tells us "James returns for his second season with the Storm. He made the NorCals last year and I expect James to be one of my top players in his sophomore season."

Todd Nalley is a graduate of Napa High School. The local lad returns to the Storm men's team as a sophomore. A 5'9" left-hander, Todd is an NVC music major with the goal of ultimately being involved with a country music station. He plans to continue his music studies at Sacramento State University. As athletic highlights go, Todd's are signifi cant: Three holes-in-one! Some of his success in school and golf comes from his role model: "My dad; he drives me to do my best." Coach Wiechers notes "Todd returns from last year's team. He has been working hard on his game and defi nitely be one of the Storm's best players."

Michael Bet-tencourt is a Hogan High School graduate who played for Bob Mansfi eld. He is a General Education major at Napa Valley College with an eye to becoming a radiologist. According to Coach Wiechers, "Michael played high school golf at Hogan. He will probably be a redshirt while we work on his game."

Ephraim Collier is a Fairfi eld High School graduate who started golf under Coach Sykes' tutelage. He's a 6-foot left-hander who is working on a Business major at NVC. Coach Wiechers notes "Ephraim is a beginning player who will probably redshirt this year while we help develop his game."

Playing for Don Trolinger at Will C. Wood High School, right-handed freshman Thomas Staples brings major potential to the Storm. Appropriately, shooting a 67 ranks as a signifi cant athletic highlight for this young player. No doubt his dad, his major role model, is proud of him. Coach Wiechers observes "Thomas could be our most spectacular player. He is very capable of shooting low and he could be one of the top players in the conference."

Marvin Vitatoe

Bob Mansfi eld coached Marvin Vitatoe at Hogan High School and he joins the Napa Valley College Storm men's golf team as a freshman right-hander. His 6'6" lanky frame gives his drive a lot of leverage. Coach Wiechers points out that "Marvin is just returning to the game of golf after a couple of years away from it. He should improve by measurable leaps and bounds as the year goes on and will be a valuable fi ll-in player.

Peter Wall RS-Michael BettencourtAlthough a graduate of Palisades High School, Peter Wall credits playing golf for Coach Steve Lundholin at Hoover High School in Des Moines, Iowa, prior to transferring to Palisades. He is a Sociology major at NVC and plans to transfer either to Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, or Grand View College in Des Moines Iowa. His career goal is to become a police offi cer. As a role model, he identifi es "My swing coach. We have been working together for a long time. I respect him." Coach Wiechers says "Peter moved to California from Iowa. He has a wonderful golf swing and will contend for the Storm's top six."
