Sir David Willcocks - Carol arranger (Carols for Choirs jointly with John Rutter)

Born Newquay in Cornwall, Sir David Willcocksbegan his musical training as a chorister atWestminster Abbey from 1929 to 1934. From 1934to 1938, he was a music scholar at Clifton College,Bristol, before his appointment as organ scholar atKing's College, Cambridge.

In 1947 was elected a Fellow of King's College andappointed Conductor of the Cambridge PhilharmonicSociety. In the same year, he became the organist atSalisbury Cathedral and the conductor of theSalisbury Musical Society. He moved to WorcesterCathedral in 1950 and remained until 1957, duringwhich time he was organist of the Cathedral,principal conductor of the Three Choirs Festival in1951, 1954, and 1957, and conductor of the City ofBirmingham Choir. From 1956 to 1974 he was alsoconductor of the Bradford Festival Choral Society,whilst continuing as guest conductor for their carolconcerts into the early 1990s.

From 1957 to 1974 he held the post for which he is probably best known, Director of Music at King'sCollege, Cambridge. In addition, he served as the organist of Cambridge University, conductor of theCambridge University Musical Society, and as University Lecturer. He made numerous recordings withthe college choir; the choir toured extensively, giving concerts worldwide, as well as garnering furtheracclaim internationally through television and radio appearances.

He held these positions at Cambridge until the 1970s when he accepted the post of director of the RoyalCollege of Music. In the 1971 Queen's Birthday Honours, he was appointed a Commander of the Order ofthe British Empire (CBE), and was created a Knight Bachelor in 1977 in the Queen's Silver JubileeHonours. He is President of the City of Bath Bach Choir.

John Rutter CBE (b.24th September 1945)John Milford Rutter studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral,

orchestral, and instrumental music, andhe has co-edited various choralanthologies including four Carols forChoirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks.From 1975-9 he was Director of Music atClare College, and in 1981 formed hisown choir, the Cambridge Singers, as aprofessional chamber choir.

He now divides his time betweencomposition and conducting, and hasguest-conducted or lectured at manyconcert halls, universities, churches,music festivals, and conferences inEurope, Scandinavia, and North America.He is an honorary Fellow of WestminsterChoir College, Princeton, a Fellow of theGuild of Church Musicians, and in 1996was awarded a Lambeth Doctorate ofMusic. In 2002 his setting of Psalm 150,commissioned for the Queen's Golden

Jubilee, was performed at the Service of Thanksgiving in St Paul's Cathedral, London. John Rutter wasawarded the CBE in the 2006 New Years Honours.

Barclays House Choir

Barclays House Choir, originallynamed Barclays House Sports andSocial Club Musical Society, wasfounded following the completion of thenew Head Office of BarclaysInternational in Poole, Dorset. The firstrehearsal was held on 5 October 1976,when ten singers met to rehearse for aplanned Christmas Concert. Numbersgrew and 21 finally took part in theconcert held in Barclays House. Sincethat time membership has widened andnow consists of about 70 membersdrawn from many occupations.

Under the musical direction of James(Jim) Grocott, who has led the choir forthe last 33 years, the group hasperformed many of the major choralworks including Handel's Messiah,Haydn's Creation, Vivaldi's Gloria andBrahms's Requiem, as well as moremodern compositions such as Rutter'sMagnificat, Gloria and Requiem.

Most of the choir's concerts alsoinvolve the 30 strong St Peter'sOrchestra, whose support is alwaysvery much appreciated. The choirreceives the financial support of theBarclays Bank Arts Council, and allconcerts are given with their support.
