High Precision InjectionIn this cutting-edge generation of petrol direct injection, the Piezo injectors are positioned very close to the spark plugs. They inject the fuel at high pressure and with extreme precision. The injectors’ central positioning means only part of the combustion chamber needs to be fi lled with an ignitable petrol-air mixture. This enables

effi cient, “lean” engine operation, especially in

the heavily used part-throttle range.

Auto Start/Stop functionBMW four-cylinder engines with 6-speed manual transmission automatically shut down when the vehicle is stationary, for example at a red light or in a jam, when the driver activates the clutch and switches to neutral. The engine restarts as soon as the clutch is activated again. This innovation signifi cantly reduces fuel consumption, especially in city traffi c.

Brake Energy RegenerationTo supply a battery with electrical energy, the generator (alternator) is permanently driven using engine power, which demands additional fuel consumption. Brake Energy Regeneration means the generator usually only generates electricity when the driver either takes the foot off the accelerator or brakes – previously unused kinetic energy is transformed in coasting mode into electrical energy before being fed into the battery. In this way, electricity is generated while coasting, without consuming fuel.

Electric Power SteeringUnlike conventional, hydraulic steering systems, electrical steering only uses energy during actual steering. When the steering wheel position is constant – for example at high speed along the motorway – the electric motor is inactive.

Tyres with reduced rolling-resistanceWhile driving, tyres are constantly changing shape. This uses up energy and thus fuel. Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance have an improved design and use special materials for their road treads and side walls, thus reducing deformation.

Sports automatic transmission with double clutch This transmission changes gears with lightning speed and without any power gap. In automatic mode, fuel consumption is reduced considerably, because the transmission quickly and precisely selects the appropriate gear for any situation.

Optimum Shift IndicatorTimely gear shifts are one of the most effective and easiest ways to save fuel. This is where the Optimum Shift Indicator in conjunction with 6-speed manual transmission comes in. It shows the driver what gear to use in order to save fuel.

The pleasure you get from driving a BMW is the result of fi ne engineering – always setting the benchmark because it is based on much more than engine power. This is the tradition behind BMW Effi cientDynamics. It includes the visionary Hydrogen engine, already used in a number of completely emission-free BMW 7 Series saloons. Also going into production soon is the BMW ActiveHybrid – an intelligent, demand-oriented combination of internal combustion engine and electric motor. And every BMW already includes the multi-award-winning BMW Effi cientDynamics technology package as standard that boosts dynamics even further whilst simultaneously reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

s Ornamental front kidney grille with specially designed surround and kidney grille slats in chrome.

On 320i and 320d the kidney grille slats are in black.

s Xenon Headlights for high and low beam,

including four light rings used as daytime

running lights and automatic headlight range

control, provide much better illumination of

the road ahead at night or in poor visibility.

o Adaptive Headlights with variable light

distribution and turning light illuminate

bends as soon as the driver steers into them.

The turning light is used in tight corners, at

speeds up to 65 km/h and when indicating.

It is automatically activated if the automatic

driving lights control is switched on.

o Trailer tow hitch including trailer stability

control, with electric unlocking via a button in

the luggage compartment. If the trailer hitch is

not needed, it can be folded away manually.

Rain sensor with automatic driving lights

control: once activated, the rain sensor will

automatically switch on the windscreen wipers

when it begins to rain, adjusting the wiper frequency

in line with rainfall intensity. The integrated automatic

driving lights control will switch on the low beam

automatically at dusk and in tunnels.

o High-beam assistant supports the driver by

automatically switching between high and low

beam when traffi c is approaching or enters the

lane ahead. When street illumination becomes

adequate, headlights are automatically dimmed.

s Headlight washing system ensures

unimpaired illumination in all weather

conditions. If the windscreen wipers are

activated while the headlights are on, the

headlamp lenses are also automatically

cleaned.

s On-board computer provides information

on average speed, average fuel consumption,

current fuel consumption and range.

o Active Cruise Control can be programmed

to maintain a set speed when the lane ahead

is clear, or to reduce speed to keep a safe

distance between you and a slower car in front,

automatically maintaining that distance until

the radar sensors detect that the lane is clear.

In addition, the braking function ensures that

the desired speed is not surpassed even when

driving downhill (not for 320i and 320d).

o Navigation system Professional*,

including DVD drive, iDrive Controller with

direct menu control buttons, eight functional

bookmarks, integrated hard disc for audio files

and navigation data, map display with bird’s

eye view and high-resolution 8.8" monitor.

s Sports leather steering wheel (369 mm

diameter), three spokes with chrome trim in

Pearl Grey and thumbrest, incl. gearshift lever

with chrome trim and handbrake lever handle

in leather.

o Steering wheel heating for sports

leather steering wheel: just press a button

to quickly warm up the steering wheel – very

comfortable in winter.

s Start/Stop button for starting the engine.

After inserting your ignition key, you can start

and stop the engine by pressing this button.

o Cruise Control with braking function (not

available on 320i and 320d) stores, displays and

maintains any selected speed above approx.

30 km/h. After accelerating, the car automatically

returns to the previously stored speed. Braking

cancels the settings.

o M leather steering wheel: easier steering

with a wider steering wheel rim. With integrated

multifunction buttons, allowing control of the

radio, CD drive and telephone (if installed) while

driving.

o Park Distance Control (PDC)1, front

and rear or rear only, facilitates parking and

manoeuvring in tight spaces. A warning signal

sounds as the car approaches an obstacle.

In combination with the navigation system,

visual warnings are also shown on the display

screen (see image).

o Automatic Air Conditioning, with

microfilter, automatic air recirculation (AAR),

solar and fogging sensor, rapidly establishes

and maintains the desired temperature in

the cabin. With individual front temperature

control for left and right sides, temperature-

controlled storage compartment in centre

console, and rear cabin ventilation and air

conditioning.

o HiFi system Professional LOGIC7, with

a total of 13 loudspeakers and a switchable

surround function creating a luxurious

soundscape within the cabin environment.

The central bass concept using subwoofers

makes for an authentic bass sound.

o HiFi loudspeaker system with eight

loudspeakers delivers outstanding acoustic

quality.

s Radio BMW Business CD, four-channel

amplifier, aerial diversity, scan function, CD

drive, MP3 decoder, automatic volume control,

five loudspeakers: four treble speakers plus

a central bass under the driver’s seats.

as BMW Business CD, plus two-line display

comfortable climatic conditions in the vehicle

interior at any time of year, with manual

adjustment of air volume and distribution.

on cold days. When you get into your car, the

windows are already free of ice and the interior

is cosy and warm.

s AUX-IN port to allow connection of an

external audio source, such as an MP3 player.

USB/audio interface for USB stick or MP3

player, upgradeable to support connection of a

Controlled via the multifunction steering wheel,

o BMW Individual High-End Audio

System, featuring powerful speakers with

exclusive neodymium magnet drivers, brings

the listening experience of a live concert into

your car. Volume and equalization are adjusted

automatically, in line with vehicle speed

(available for the six-cylinder models).


o Electric seat adjustment, for driver and

front passenger, with electric adjustment of

seat height, backrest, fore/aft position and seat

angle, plus memory function for driver’s seat

and exterior mirrors (incl. automatic parking

function). Two personalised settings can be

stored for the driver’s seat and exterior mirrors

(standard for the 330i, 335i, 330d and 335d).

o Sports automatic transmission with

double clutch with gearshift paddles on

the steering wheel for exceptionally fast

gear changes without power loss, ensuring

top dynamic performance and optimised

fuel consumption (available for 335i).

s 6-speed manual transmission for a very

sporty drive. Smooth, with perfect ratios and

precise, short-throw gearshifts. The addition

of a 6th gear and the reduced spacing of gear

ratios mean that you can make even more

individual use of the engine’s power (not

available on 335d).

o 6-speed automatic transmission

Steptronic. The gearshift mechanism enables

very fast, immaculate gear changes for truly

dynamic performance (standard on 335d).

o Sports leather steering wheel with

gearshift paddles for even sportier gear

changes (only available for the six-cylinder

o Bluetooth telephone preparation incl.

charging and hands-free system as well as

outdoor aerial connection. Using a snap-in

s The electric seat belt handover for the

driver and front passenger facilitates reaching

and fi tting the seatbelt after getting into the car,

regardless of the seat position and angle of the

backrest. The seat occupation detector on the

passenger side only activates the belt handover

arm if the seat is occupied.

o Seat heating (shown here in conjunction

with air conditioning) for driver and front

passenger seat (three settings). The seat

surface, sides and backrest are heatable and

provide a comfortable level of warmth soon

after the car sets off.

o Sports seats for driver and front passenger

Optimum lateral support is ensured by infi nitely

variable electric backrest width adjustment.

Thigh support manually adjustable. Sports

seats are standard on the 335i and 335d.

alarm system emits an acoustic signal and

immediately switches on the hazard warning

lights.

o Comfort access system for opening and

closing the car without having to touch the

radio remote control. You only need to have

the ignition key in your pocket, briefcase or

handbag, for example. The engine can also be

instantly started by pressing the Start/Stop

button without the need for the key.

o Ski bag (in conjunction with through-loading

system) for clean and safe transportation of

up to four pairs of skis with up to four people on

board. If the ski bag is not required, it can be

tucked away out of sight.

o Sunblind for rear window, electric, deflects

intense sunlight and provides effective

aerodynamics package the BMW has a

harmonious, smoothly contoured appearance.

Two kinds of BMW light-alloy wheels are

available to complement this presentation.

The finely tuned M sports chassis, chrome-

plated exhaust pipes and high-gloss Shadow

Line lend the finishing touches. Inside

meanwhile, sports seats in an exclusive cloth/

Alcantara combination, an M leather steering

wheel, Aluminium Glacier Silver interior trim

and an Anthracite roofliner ensure a dynamic

effect. This equipment package is rounded

Your BMW is the product of a comprehensive recycling concept. But what exactly does that mean in practice? It

means that all the requirements of recycling are taken into account from the start, in the initial development of a

BMW. One example is careful material selection designed to preserve resources and to ensure efficient recycling

compatible with the environment. Each BMW is designed and built for simple and economic recycling after its

long-running life. Since 1994, we have been collecting the know-how required for this purpose at the unique BMW

Recycling and Dismantling Centre (RDC) near Munich. At the same time, the BMW Group is establishing a complete
