I llinois Wesleyan University, founded in 1850, enrolls about2,100 undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts, with 17academic departments, and in the Schools of Art, Music,

Nursing and Theatre Arts. The 2004 edition of The Fiske Guide toColleges lists the University as one of its 22 “best buys” amongthe nation’s private colleges, describing Illinois Wesleyan as “atonce cozy and diverse, loaded with opportunities for ambitiousstudents.”Emphasizing a distinctive liberal arts curriculum as the centralfeature of every student’s education, IWU also provides opportu-nities for professional and pre-professional preparation. The stu-dent-faculty ratio of 12-to-1 means that the University’s studentsare active participants in their education, often working individual-ly with faculty members on research. As a residential university,Illinois Wesleyan provides a vibrant campus environment in whichrich co-curricular offerings complement the primary academicmission.About 30 percent of each graduating class goes on to graduateschool, with recent alumni accepted into law schools, medicalschools, and in other advanced degree programs.New Facilities. The $25 million Ames Library (at right), a placewhere books, journals and other materials of intellect and cultureare complemented by exciting computer and information technol-ogy, opened in 2002 and the recent $6 million renovation of theMemorial Gym has resulted in the Hansen Student Center, afacility designed to meet the social, recreational, and educationalneeds of IWU students. IWU’s attractive and well-maintained 73-acre campus saw approximately $51 million in new constructionin the 1990s, including the Shirk Center for Athletics andRecreation (1994), the Center for Natural Science Learning andResearch (1995), the Center for Liberal Arts (1997) as well as a

residence hall, accommodating 118 students in suite-like apart-ments (1997). The Shirk Center was funded in part by a $5 mil-lion gift from the Russell and Betty Shirk Foundation ofBloomington. The Shirk family owns Beer Nuts, Inc.®, theBloomington-based snack food company. In 1999 the JackHorenberger Baseball Field was opened, which paved the way in2000 for new softball and soccer fields. The science center has15 technologically-equipped classrooms, lecture halls, and semi-nar rooms; 18 teaching labs; 27 research labs; and facilities forcomputers. The Center for Liberal Arts houses 60 offices andfacilities for social science, humanities, business and economics.Distinguished Speakers. In the past few years, IWU has host-ed a number of outstanding speakers, including former U.S.Defense Secretary William Cohen, authors Maya Angelou andKurt Vonnegut, and film directors Kevin Smith and Spike Lee.Accomplished Alums. MIKE MORRISSEY: The left-hand-ed hitter needs two more walks tobecome the Titans’ season leader.he has 30 and the record is 31(Ryan Gilfillan in 2001 and MarkEstock in 1995)...He also needsone more sacrifice to become theall-time season leader. He has 11and is tied with Chad Rock

(2001)...His 155 career hits is 18th best in an IWUuniform and he is ninth all-time with 70 career walks.

KRAIG LADD, LEFTFIELD: Afterstruggling for a good portion of theseason, Ladd is another reason forthe late IWU success. In the last 16games, Ladd is hitting .390 with fivedoubles, two home runs and 17RBI...That stretch has raised hisaverage to .245 from .163…In IWUcareer records he is eighth in dou-

bles, tied for 20th in home runs and games played,12th in RBI, 15th in runs scored and 14th in hits.

McDERMOTT’S HOT MAY:Sophomore catcher MarkMcDermott was batting .265 aftergoing 0-for-5 in a doubleheader vs.Elmhurst. Since that time he is hit-ting .431 and has raised his aver-age to .331…He was the NCAADivision III Regional all-tournament“MVP” as he batted .571…He has

been hitting .542 during the seven-game winstreak...Needs seven more doubles for most in anIWU season.

RYAN HOPP: An injury to BrettMoore proved to be the best thingthat happened to Ryan Hopp thisseason - when Moore went downwith a shoulder injury April 6, ZachScott moved from centerfield to sec-ond base and Hopp was inserted incenter. Prior to April 6, he had only27 at bats and was hitting .222 -

when Moore returned, Scott moved to short andHopp stayed in center because he has hit .378 sinceApril 6 and raised his season mark to .348...Had fivehits in NCAA regional game vs. Ripon, second mostin an IWU single game.

After falling to 14-17 on April 29, the Titans are 13-3 and have won seven straight. A look at someof the batting averages, then, now, and along the way:
