Dear Friends:

I am pleased to share with you the 2010 Annual Report of Anna

Maria College. The theme of this year is “Envision the Future.”

Through the many articles and information provided, you will see

how much we have accomplished in 2009-10; and even more

important, how much we are planning to do in the coming years.

Despite the global economic challenges, AMC continues to grow

and thrive.

As always, we can plan the future only by remaining rooted in

our past. As we celebrate the success of this past year and the

opportunities for the future of the College, we remain dedicated to

our founding mission, tradition and values. We remain committed

to our identity as a Catholic and Sisters of Saint Anne College.

You will read about our first Dean of Mission Effectiveness, a

position created for the express purpose of promoting our mission,

identity and history. While the number of Sisters of Saint Anne who

are directly connected to AMC grows smaller, we must never forget

their founding vision and the unique identity that is only Anna Maria College.

You will read about our commitment to sustainability and becoming a “green” campus.

This future-oriented movement is really only a preservation of the commitment to the

beautiful and pastoral campus initially created by the Sisters when they moved to Paxton.

As they cared for the environment so we could be here today, we must care for the

environment so future generations can benefit from Anna Maria College.

You will read about distinguished alumnae from the past who continue to contribute to

the vibrancy of their alma mater. You will also learn of our commitment to educate today’s

students who have all the potential in the world, but need the opportunity that only AMC

can provide.

You will read about all we have accomplished since the adoption of our Strategic

Plan in 2007: “Vision 2012: Excellence at Anna Maria College.” But we know that there

is still much to do as we continue to grow enrollment, develop programs, increase our

opportunities for students, and demonstrate our commitment to excellence.

Eleanor Roosevelt said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their

dreams.” As we envision the future at Anna Maria College, we believe that our dreams will

be realized and that they will continue to sustain this extraordinary institution.

But our dreams cannot be realized without you. The future cannot become a reality

without you. We need your help and support … we need your abiding commitment to our

values and goals. Thank you for all you do for Anna Maria College!

Sincerely,

Jack P. Calareso, Ph.D.

For the past three years, Anna Maria College

has experienced tremendous growth and change while

preserving the core values and traditions that have served

AMC since its founding by the Sisters of Saint Anne in 1946.

From 2007-2010, alumni donors increased

by 2% in the first two years and 1% in the

past year, a total of 5% in three years.

Donations to the Annual Fund increased by 31.5%

from FY 2007/08 to FY 2008/09 and increased

another 14% from FY 2008/09 to FY 2009/10 for

a total of 45.5% increase in three years.

For each of these goals, there are a number of strategies and critical outcomes that set Anna Maria

on a path to achieve excellence in all facets of College life. Taken together, these five goals will reaffirm

Anna Maria’s place as a leading Catholic institution of higher learning, recognized for its transformational

educational experience rooted in its commitment to ethics, values and service.

So how well is the College doing in achieving this vision? Just three years into the plan, the College has

already accomplished a number of important initiatives. Through strong leadership at every level of the

College, the dedication and commitment of so many faculty and staff, and the generosity and continued

support of our alumni and benefactors, AMC has developed a clearer focus on excellence and emerged as

a change agent in the higher education marketplace.

Elsewhere in this Annual Report you will read about the tremendous growth in enrollment and our

commitment to sustainability and the environment. What follows are a few of the significant achievements

that have been accomplished as part of “Excellence at Anna Maria College.”

Upon his arrival as the new president in the Summer of 2007, Dr. Jack P. Calareso

convened an ad hoc committee of faculty, administrators, staff and students in order to

develop a strategic plan for the College. The process of developing the strategic plan

included the entire college community; and in October 2007, the Board of Trustees

approved “Vision 2012: Excellence at Anna Maria College.” For the past three years, this

Plan has served as a detailed road map, helping to chart AMC’s course as it transitions

to a new phase in its prestigious history.

“Excellence at Anna Maria College” focuses on five goals for AMC:

Strengthen and promote the College’s commitment

to its mission and values.

Develop the College’s reputation and standing

as a leading Catholic center of higher learning.

Increase the College’s enrollment of students who are

ready to be active members of our learning community.

Enhance public awareness, understanding and visibility

of the College.

Secure the necessary resources to support the goals

of the College.

Growing a college has its challenges. A struggling economy and a region that is saturated with institutions of higher education do not make it any easier.

When Anna Maria embarked on its strategic plan

in 2007 to grow the College, our nation as a whole

was just beginning to uncover the economic issues

that would almost cripple the country over the next

two years. Even though a few government programs

are beginning to help turn the tide, families are still

struggling with the aftermath of an economy

gone awry.

Despite our depressed economy and an increase

in competition for the same students, AMC has

not been deterred from striving to achieve the

goals of its Strategic Plan, “Vision 2012: Excellence

at Anna Maria College.” With this Plan calling for

significant growth within a five-year time frame,

the College has reorganized departments, made

significant improvements in retention programs, and

implemented a new recruitment strategy to assist in

increasing its student population.

In the fall of 2009, AMC welcomed the largest

undergraduate class in the history of the College,

bringing total student enrollment to 1504 by the spring

of 2010, with 912 undergraduates. In the spring of

2007, the total undergraduate enrollment was 597;

total overall enrollment was 1070. In just three years,

Anna Maria increased overall student enrollment by

over 40% with undergraduate enrollment increasing by

more than 50%. The incoming class of 2010 continues

with this growth pattern. It is the second largest class

at AMC, 394 undergraduate students strong, with

overall enrollment at over 1500.

The profile of AMC’s student population is also

changing as the College grows. Undergraduate

minority student population has increased eight

percent and recruitment efforts continue to reach

beyond the New England borders to offer students

the opportunity to obtain an Anna Maria education.

Going Green

Setting the Pace for the Green Movement

Anna Maria College made major strides this past year in fulfilling

the College’s commitment to sustainability. A good steward of

the environment since its inception, AMC’s tenth President,

Dr. Jack P. Calareso, pledged that the College would continue its

efforts as part of the American College & University Presidents’ Climate

Commitment (ACUPCC). This commitment called for the submission of

a Campus Climate Plan (CAP) outlining how the College would strive to

achieve carbon neutrality. In May 2010, Anna Maria College submitted its

CAP demonstrating the College’s continued dedication to undertaking

projects that ultimately provide for the Common Good.

Action Plan.

“As a team, PACES began to explore opportunities for the College

to address sustainability using four areas of focus: carbon footprint

reduction, curriculum, campus life and community relations.”

8 Anna Maria College | Annual Report 2010

In the summer of 2009, Dr. Calareso established

the President’s Advisory Council on Environmental

Sustainability (PACES) to assist in rallying the

College community around this important issue.

The purpose of the advisory council was to provide

organizational support to sustainability initiatives

and to develop the College’s Climate Action Plan.

PACES continued the good work begun by Dr.

Susan Swedis and the Sustainability Committee

and included a broader representation of

students, faculty, staff, administrators and alumni.

Cheryl Sleboda, Vice President for Finance and

Administration, helped chair this new endeavor.

“As a team, PACES began to explore opportuni-

ties for the College to address sustainability using

four areas of focus: carbon footprint reduction,

curriculum, campus life and community relations,”

explains Ms. Sleboda. “Then by breaking into sub-

committees, we were able to accelerate our work

on developing our CAP.”

Understanding the complexities involved with

moving a project of this magnitude forward, AMC

did not waste any time launching a few initiatives

that would help jump-start its plan. “The installation

of a state-of-the-art wood pellet central heating

system on campus will be a major step in assisting

Anna Maria in achieving carbon neutrality,” shares

Ms. Sleboda. “When this project is completed, AMC

will be the first college in Massachusetts to heat the

majority of its campus on metered thermal energy

from locally sourced wood pellets.”

Other exciting initiatives that have already been

undertaken include using solar power to light the

score boards on the all-purpose athletic field;

and working with Siemens Energy Performance

Solutions, a customized program designed to

reduce energy and operating costs through the

implementation of infrastructure and management

improvements throughout the campus.

“We are also exploring the use of wind power,”

adds Dr. Calareso. “We conducted an assessment in

August 2009 with the Emergent Energy group, with

initial results for the installation of a wind turbine

found to be positive.”

As far as achieving carbon neutrality, PACES

established short, mid and long-term goals.

Short-term goals address projects that the

College anticipates completing by 2011 and include

reducing annual greenhouse gas emissions that will

occur when the College switches from number two

heating oil to wood pellets, and implements other

projects identified by the partnership with Siemens.

Mid-term goals stretch out to 2015 as the College

begins to work more fully with solar power and

other alternative energy sources with the long-term

goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045.

“I think the College community understands

the importance and significance of achieving this

goal,” states Dr. Calareso. “AMC’s heritage supports

our commitment to achieving carbon neutrality.

Protecting the future of sustainable life on earth

demands that our CAP be successful.”

Recognizing the many steps it will take for AMC to achieve carbon neutrality, a number of core strategies were identified, including:

Page 12: 2010 Annual Report

Early on, Anna Maria College was a

household name in Sister Rollande

Quintal’s home. Her oldest sister, Claire

’52, was the first of the four Quintal

sisters to attend Anna Maria when it

opened in Marlborough, Massachusetts,

in 1946. Marcelle ’55 and Cecile ’61 and,

eventually, Sr. Rollande ’62 attended

after the College moved to Paxton.

Growing up in Rhode Island, Sr. Rollande

was familiar with the Sisters of Saint

Anne (SSA) having attended SSA-

sponsored Notre Dame Elementary and

High Schools. Soon after graduation

from high school, she joined the

Congregation and then followed the

family tradition, becoming a student

at Anna Maria College. “As a Junior

Sister, I lived in the small cottage that

currently houses health services,” she

explains. “The other Sisters, including

AMC foundresses Sisters Raymond Marie,

Mary Joseph Alfred, and Mary Rose

Isabel, the college’s first Registrar, resided

in Socquet House, as did many others

including Sister Irene Socquet and Sister

Bernadette Madore.”

After graduating in 1962 with a

bachelor’s degree in Art and Education,

Sr. Rollande taught at the junior high and

high school levels in Massachusetts and

Rhode Island, in schools staffed by the

Sisters of St. Anne. She also had a first

taste of residence life as Dean of Students

at St. Anne Academy in Marlborough.

While pursuing an advanced degree

in art at the University of Notre Dame,

Sister Rollande’s vocation fulfillment path

shifted gears. “I’m a ‘people’ person and

I felt that my ministry choice needed

to reflect this,” she states. “With the

wholehearted backing of the authorities

of the Congregation, I began my studies

in the Master in Counseling Psychology

program at Boston College, specializing

in guidance counseling.” Sister Rollande

then returned to her high school

alma mater as a teacher and guidance

counselor.

After nine years, her ministry path

took a new turn when a call came from

Anna Maria College that would engage

her energies for years to come. “In 1976,

I was asked to join AMC as the Registrar.

I was honored to be asked to take on

such a role and happy to be part of this

growing community once again.

Forever Anna Maria College“I recognized this as an

opportunity to further

our SSA mission at

AMC in helping to

shape its future.”

Dedicated to AMC

10 Anna Maria College | Annual Report 2010

Page 13: 2010 Annual Report

I had already witnessed so many

changes at the College,” she continues.

“I recognized this as an opportunity

to further our SSA mission at AMC in

helping to shape its future.”

Now, thirty-four years later, Sr.

Rollande has seen the college ebb

and flow as she remained steadfastly

committed to its SSA mission. She

fondly remembers many students

whom she came to know in her role

as Registrar. She also enjoys sharing

stories about her additional duties at

that time as a Resident Director among

the students in Madonna Hall. “In those

years, the Sisters were involved in every

aspect of campus life with many of us

living in the residence hall,” she said.

“I’ll never forget Sr. Paulette Gardner

telling guests that they could call her

anytime, day or night, and then she

would give them my phone number

instead of hers,” she quips. Sr. Rollande

also remembers the community room

in Madonna Hall where she and the

other Sisters would gather. “It was

nicknamed ‘the nuns’ hideaway’ by one

of the undergrads and the name stuck.

As our local community room, the door

was always open. Students from those

years quickly realized that when ‘the

dome was down’, as they called it, they

could engage in private conversations

and that what was shared there, stayed

there,” she adds.

Many changes occurred on campus

while Sr. Rollande was Registrar,

including the College’s move to on-

campus computerization. “Prior to

the 1980’s, all of our records went to

WPI as it had one of the few available

computer centers in the area,” she

says. When PCs hit the marketplace,

the College purchased an Apple and

Sr. Rollande and her staff spent hours

entering all of the College’s records

by hand. Like all of the other Sisters of

Saint Anne on campus, Sr. Rollande

did whatever was needed to keep AMC

moving forward.

This commitment to Anna Maria’s

founding mission and her own

personal witness to vowed religious

life in the Church are the basis for Sr.

Rollande’s new role as Dean of Mission

Effectiveness. “I view this new office

as one that will focus on helping the

college community learn, remember,

and understand our past history so

that we can all embrace the future

with a renewed and deepened sense

of purpose,” explains Sr. Rollande

convincingly.

Forever Anna Maria CollegeThe College opened

the Office of Mission

Effectiveness on September

8, 2010. This date honors

the historical moment in

1850 when Blessed Marie

Anne Blondin and her four

companions processed

into the parish church of

Saint Michel in Vaudreuil,

Quebec, to publicly

pronounce their vows to

God, thus giving birth to a

new community known as

the Congregation of the

Sisters of Saint Anne.

“My sister Ann was six years older than me,

so she had already graduated from Anna Maria

when I began my freshman year,” shares Edith.

“Peggy was in her senior year so even though

the campus was fairly small, I was able to make

my own friends and create my own niche.”

All three Mooney sisters commuted from their

Holden home except for Peggy’s last semester

on campus when both she and Edith lived in the

residence hall. Edith majored in sociology and

minored in education at Anna Maria and fondly

remembers one of her professors, Mrs. Mary

Plunkett. According to Edith, Mrs. Plunkett was

“sensible and down to earth. She was very wise

and had a great sense of humor,” she adds.

Edith points to something Mrs. Plunkett

shared with her students, words of wisdom that

no doubt impacted some of her future choices.

“I remember her telling us that whatever group

or organization we joined, we should eventually

take a position of leadership,” explains Edith.

Edith not only remembered these words, she

lived them out later in life when she launched

the Friends of the Paxton Library, served as the

organization’s president numerous times and

remained a trustee for 15 years.

Other hallmarks of an AMC education

impacted Edith’s future. After graduating, she

along with four other students joined Extension

Lay Volunteers of America in an effort to give

back to others. “The teachings of the Sisters of

Saint Anne regarding social justice and working

toward the common good really resonated with

me,” states Edith. “I truly value the experience

I had working as part of this volunteer

organization teaching fifth graders in Oklahoma.

I came to admire the people, who may have

been short on material things but rich and full

on values and an appreciation for life.”

After fulfilling her one-year commitment

to Extension Lay Volunteers of America, Edith

returned to the Holden area and taught at

the Jefferson School in Holden. In 1965, she

married her husband of 45 years, Tom LaVigne

and dedicated the rest of her life to raising four

children. Today, Edith resides on the Cape

with Tom and enjoys spending time with her

eight grandchildren.

Edith also continues to enjoy giving back and

taking leadership roles in the community. Both

she and her husband are involved with Cape Cod

Hospital, and Edith has once again signed on as a

Trustee at Anna Maria College, having previously

served in this capacity from 2001-2007. “I am

excited to be able to be involved with my alma

mater during a time of great change,” she shares.

“I am very pleased that the College is aspiring

to academic excellence and working hard to

re-establish AMC as a leader in quality, Catholic

education. Anna Maria was very good for me. I

would definitely recommend it to others.”

Edith Mooney LaVigne ’63, the youngest of three daughters in the Mooney family, did not

envision herself graduating from the same alma mater as her two older sisters. Edith wanted

to carve out her own path and thought that she needed to attend a college other than Anna

Maria to do so. It turned out, however, that AMC was the right choice for Edith and, despite

the fact that her sisters Ann and Peggy had already blazed the trail at Anna Maria, Edith was

able to become a woman in her own right.

“The summer Bridge Program has enabled me to become a stronger and erudite leader, and has prepared me for a successful college career.”

Fabienne Jules ’14

It may be difficult for most of us to remember what it was

like to transition from high school to college; however,

this period of time can often be very challenging

particularly for at-risk students. In keeping with its vision

of academic excellence, in 2009 Anna Maria College

applied for and received a $275,000 grant from the Lloyd

G. Balfour Foundation (Bank of America, N.A., Trustee) to

help the College pilot a two-year summer bridge program

in addition to expanding other multicultural initiatives

on campus. Since 2007, AMC’s minority undergraduate

student population has increased by almost eight percent.

With the generous support of the Balfour Foundation,

the College will be able to better meet the needs of

this growing constituency, while providing all its

students with an educational experience that honors

and respects diversity.

According to Michealle Larkins, Vice President, Grant-

making Program Officer, Bank of America, N.A., “The

Balfour Foundation is pleased to partner with Anna Maria

College in its multi-pronged approach to diversify its

campus. The initiatives will better prepare its students to

function as graduates in a diverse society and will help

increase the recruitment, retention, and graduation of

Balfour Foundation Grant Directly Impacts Student Success

Meeting Challenges

multicultural students,” shares Larkins. “The AMCat

Summer program in particular exemplifies the Lloyd

G. Balfour Foundation’s mission of promoting college

readiness and access for underserved populations

in New England by helping the College’s students of

color succeed and graduate.”

AMCat Summer is an intensive ten-day, supervised,

residential transition program that includes

individualized tutoring and peer advising sessions.

It is intended to bolster the writing, math and study

skills of freshmen entering Anna Maria College.

Through engaging team-building activities, classroom

sessions, social events, campus exploration, and

workshops addressing leadership and personal

development, students learn about the resources and

services that are available to assist them in achieving

academic success. The first AMCat Summer was held

in August 2010 with 13 students in attendance. The

results of the program will be assessed as the student

participants are followed during their academic

career at AMC.

In addition to the summer Bridge Program, the

Balfour Grant has opened up new opportunities

for AMC to expand its multicultural initiatives and

programming, as well as to increase the College’s

capacity to address a variety of issues that often

impact minority and at-risk students’ abilities to

succeed in college. The Grant also supports the

addition of staff to support the Office of Multicultural

Affairs (OMA).

The OMA was established in the fall of 2008 and

serves as a resource, advocate and source of support

for the AMC student community on issues related

to multiculturalism. Directed by Stephanie Williams,

the OMA is charged with developing resources and

programs that support racial and ethnic minority

student populations through empowerment, learning

opportunities, leadership, campus involvement

and personal development. “Our primary

responsibility is to create a welcoming environment

that is inclusive of all students and through the

support of the Balfour Foundation, we will be able

to achieve our goals,” explains Stephanie. The OMA

also supports ALANA (African-American, Latino,

Asian, Native American) on campus and as part of the

Colleges of Worcester Consortium.
