More Talent Added To Festival #31! The band has a loyal group of fans who admire its interpretations of San Francisco Style traditional jazz. Chloe Feoranzo , the fabulous clarinetist/saxophonist from Los Angeles. In demand as a side (person) as well as bandleader, Chloe plays all types of jazz. Dixie Express (San Diego) is a versatile band that plays top-notch Traditional Jazz, Dixieland and Swing. Dick Williams’ JazzSea Jams (Pleasanton, California). Cornetist Williams’ expertly-organized jam sessions attract musicians from across the U.S. Mission Bay High School Dixie Band (San Diego). JP Balmat directs an awesome group of young musicians who play excellent Dixieland and swing. The Festival will be held Nov. 24-28, 2010 at the Town & Country Resort and Convention Center — 500 Hotel Circle North in San Diego. As always, the lineup includes the best performers in Dixieland, Traditional Jazz, Swing, Boogie Woogie and Ragtime. And this year, AFCDJS is proud to present two outstanding groups that play music that is closely related to Trad: Tom Rigney and Flambeau, the nationally-renowned Zydeco and Cajun ensemble from Berkeley, California, and Billy Mata and the Texas Tradition, authentic Western Swing from Lytle, Texas. In May, this band will be inducted into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame! Two more new bands are swing- oriented groups: the Bobby Gordon Quartet with vocalist Kristy Reed and Anita Thomas’ Festival Feetwarmers. In addition to these excellent bands, the Festival lineup includes High Sierra Jazz Band, Dave Bennett Quartet, Cornet Chop Suey, Yerba Buena Stompers, Grand Dominion Jazz Band, Tim Laughlin, Connie Jones and the New Orleans All-Stars, Carl Sonny Leyland, Uptown Lowdown, High Society Jazz Band, Night Blooming Jazzmen, Sue Palmer and her Motel Swing Orchestra and the Heliotrope Ragtime Orchestra. Published by America’s Finest City Dixieland Jazz Society • San Diego, CA • www.dixielandjazzfestival.org $5.00 Per Issue Vol. XXVIII No. 2 2010 Annual Appeal If you are on our mailing list you should have received an Appeal letter in the mail by now. Last year more than 150 Society members and non-members alike responded to our First Annual Appeal. As we continue planning our 31st Annual Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival, it is most gratifying to know there are so many of you who are helping to “keep the music alive” by your financial contributions as well as your time and talents. You can be assured that our five-day Festival as well as our monthly concerts, education and youth programs such as jazz camps, workshops, scholarships and other educational activities, all contribute to our mission – to preserve and promote this uniquely American art form of Traditional Jazz. Once again this year we ask for your generous financial support to help continue the work of the Society. Last year was financially difficult for everyone, including the Society, and we continue to take extraordinary efforts to economize where possible. With your help we were able to get through 2009 and with your help again this year we’ll be able to do the same. Just like last year, your contribution could help sponsor a band or musician at the Festival, or help promote our education and youth programs, or you may choose to send an unrestricted donation. No matter the amount of your contribution or how it is directed, each response to this appeal will directly contribute in a positive way to the programs and activi- ties of your Society. Appeal contri- butions are deductible for tax purposes. I sincerely hope that you will consider a contribution. Please make your check payable to AFCDJS. If you prefer, we now have the option to respond to this Appeal on-line using a credit card. Just click at http:// www.dixielandjazzfestival.org/ index.html. others. Singleton’s 1940 record of “KingPorter Stomp” (with his own band) wasone of the most rhythmically intensesides of that particular year. The onlyother record from 1940 that couldpossibly match it was Bud Freeman’s“Prince of Wails” with Dave Tough’s fierycymbals relentlessly driving the band.

However, the recordings that showZutty Singleton at his best were the“Three Deuces” sides, made forCommodore in 1941. The band namecelebrated a musicians’ hangout inChicago and reunited three musicalcomrades who formed a mutualadmiration society — Pee Wee Russell(clarinet), Joe Sullivan (piano) and“Face” on drums. These records reallytell the Zutty Singleton story — swingingpress rolls and snare drum fills, explosiverimshots, propulsive ride cymbal, hypnotic tom-tom rhythms, melodicsolos and judicious use of woodblock, cowbell (and ratchet)! Russell andSullivan were clearly enjoying everyquarter note of the superb drumming.Listeners who have a soul will feel thesame inspiration when they hear thesedesert island recordings.

the first televised jazz concert, with aband led by Eddie Condon. In 1943, hetook time off from his busy schedule inNew York City to make a trip toHollywood. There he appeared onscreenand was heard on the soundtrack of thefilm “Stormy Weather,” playing with acombo led by his old friend Fats Waller.

Despite the fact that the onscreenaction was “synched” to a prerecordedsoundtrack, it is a joy to watch Zuttywork his musical wonders during anuptempo passage on “Ain’tMisbehavin’.” (Waller also recorded anumber called “Moppin’ and Boppin,”which featured a drum solo, but it wasnot included on the soundtrack.Thankfully, it was later released by RCAVictor).

After a brief return to New York,Zutty and Marge headed west to LosAngeles. During his long residency inSouthern California, Singleton playedwith an astonishing roster of musicians, including Kid Ory, the Firehouse FivePlus Two, the Bobcats, Slim and Slam,Albert Nicholas, James P. Johnson,Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie!Zutty’s incredible musical instinctallowed him to play just the right thingin each musical situation, whetherplaying a rideout chorus over a fire siren,or following the complex playing of

Parker and Gillespie. He was heard on Orson Welles’

broadcasts featuring the Kid Ory band,“Lamplighter” broadcasts with BobCrosby’s Bob Cats, seen onscreen in“New Orleans” (with Armstrong, Oryand Billie Holiday), “Love that Brute”(with Eddie Miller) and on the “DixielandJamboree” TV series with Nappy Lamare. He recorded with the Capitol Jazzmen,Barney Bigard, Wingy Manone and KayStarr and appeared at the very firsttraditional jazz festival — the “DixielandJubilee” in Los Angeles.

The Singletons eventually returnedto New York, this time permanently. In1951, Zutty went to Paris with a band ledby Mezz Mezzrow. Though the bandexperienced a number of musical andpersonal problems, “Face” received ahero’s welcome from French jazz fanswho were well aware of hisdistinguished musical background.

Back in New York, he worked brieflywith Roy Eldridge, then played a longstint in a trio with clarinetist Tony Parentiand pianist Dick Wellstood at theMetropole. When Jimmy Ryan’s movedto a new location, Zutty led the band.He continued to record, with SidneyBechet and Lil Armstrong, DickWellstood and Tony Parenti, Henry RedAllen, the DeParis Brothers and more. And despite the traditionally-orientedrecordings he made, Singleton enjoyedhearing contemporary musicians suchas Thelonious Monk.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s heappeared at the Manassas Jazz Festivalin Virginia. A number of the sessionswere recorded and issued by FestivalDirector Johnson McRee, including atwo-volume set from 1967 of “Zutty andthe Clarinet Kings.” This set containsone of Singleton’s best melodic solos— a clear statement of the melody on“Chinatown, My Chinatown,” whichshould be required listening for anydrummer who expresses an interest insoloing! He also played severalunaccompanied solos for the French-produced film “L’Aventue Du Jazz.”

After suffering a stroke in 1970, heretired from music and passed away inNew York City on July 14, 1975. PianistJess Stacy once remarked thatSingleton’s drumming “was afoundation on which wonders could bebuilt.” Zutty Singleton’s recordings, and comments from those who heardhim in person, confirm Stacy’sassessment. His drumming was theheartbeat of jazz.

By Hal SmithAFCDJS President

Recently, jazz pianist Ray Skjelbredwas listening to the 1941 recording of“The Last Time I Saw Chicago” by TheThree Deuces, with clarinetist Pee WeeRussell, pianist Joe Sullivan anddrummer Zutty Singleton. As Singletonlaunched into an accented press rollbehind Russell’s wailing clarinet,Skjelbred virtually pointed his finger atSingleton and declared, “That guy’s agenius!” A majority of drummers, otherinstrumentalists and listeners agree!

Arthur James Singleton was born inBunkie, Louisiana on May 14, 1898. Hislifelong nickname was bestowed uponhim as an infant. (“Zutty” is Creole for“cute”). He began drumming at an earlyage and played professionally with thelegendary New Orleans pianist SteveLewis. During this time Singleton becameone of the first drummers in New Orleansto play brushes extensively.

He served in the U.S. Navy duringWorld War I, then returned to NewOrleans. In the early ’20s he joined theorchestra of Fate Marable, and went towork on the Streckfus riverboats. WithMarable, he gained another nickname:“Face.” In years to come, Singletonaddressed most acquaintances in thisway, and they returned the compliment!

The riverboat work eventually tookSingleton to St. Louis, where he joinedthe orchestra led by cornetist CharlieCreath. After hours, he played sessionswith Bix Beiderbecke, Frank Trumbauerand a St. Louis musician who wouldbecome a lifelong friend and associate—Pee Wee Russell. In the Gateway City,Singleton also met his soon-to-be bride,Marjorie Creath (Charlie’s sister).

In 1925, the Singletons relocated toChicago, to take advantage of that city’sthriving musical scene. Zutty soon fellin with an old acquaintance, LouisArmstrong, and the two New Orleaniansmaintained a busy schedule playingdances, shows, clubs and recordings. The drummer played briefly with DocCook and his Orchestra and put in alonger stint with a trio led by clarinetistJimmie Noone. One night during the trioengagement, Noone reportedly turnedto Singleton and asked him to take adrum solo. Years later, describing thedrum solos to author Martin Williams,Singleton recalled humming the melodyto himself, marking off the internal four-and eight-bar phrases and ending thesolo exactly at 12, 16 or 32 bars, depending on the song.

Zutty’s playing inspired manyyounger Chicago drummers. DaveTough picked up his accented pressrolls. George Wettling borrowed someof his unique snare drum patterns. SidCatlett was deeply influenced by themelodic solos, using the entire drum set.In 1938, Gene Krupa played many ofSingleton’s tom-tom rhythms on one ofthe most famous drum features of alltime — “Sing, Sing, Sing,” At the end ofhis solo, Krupa also appropriated

Zutty’s four strokes on the cowbell tocue the orchestra back in!

In the late ’20s, Singleton recorded anumber of classic sides with LouisArmstrong and Earl Hines. He used anunusual percussion device called “bock-a-da-bock cymbals” on “Sugar FootStrut” and “Monday Date” while otherrecordings demonstrated his masterywith brushes and his strong pulse onthe bass drum.

In 1929, Armstrong and Singletonwent to New York. A session from Julyof that year produced one of the bestrecordings ever made by Louis or Zutty— “That Rhythm Man.” Theincandescent trumpet and vocal and theswinging drums are nonpareil.

The two New Orleanians partedcompany, though Singleton stayed onfor awhile in New York. Between 1929and 1932, his drumming was heard on anumber of classic records, including atrio date with Jelly Roll Morton andBarney Bigard and the spectacular“Rhythmakers” sides featuring HenryRed Allen, Pee Wee Russell, Joe Sullivan,Eddie Condon, Pops Foster and others.

Zutty returned to Chicago, workingas a sideman and sometimes leading hisown groups. He continued to recordmemorable sides, such as those withCharles LaVere, Banjo Ikey Robinsonand Roy Eldridge.

When a steady engagement withEldridge ended in 1937, Singleton onceagain decided to try his luck in NewYork. The second time was a charm. Hewas soon working regularly at Nick’s inGreenwich Village, then at Jimmy Ryan’son 52nd Street. He also spent aconsiderable amount of time in recordingstudios, with Lionel Hampton, Jelly RollMorton, Mezz Mezzrow, Art Hodes,Sidney Bechet, Pee Wee Russell and
