R E A F F I R M A T I O N B E G I N SIn2011,JCCbeganpreparingforits2013reaffirmationbytheSouthernAssociationofCollegesandSchools.Theyearwasspentresearchingandwritingtwokeydocuments,theComplianceCertification,orselfevaluation,andtheQualityEnhancementPlan(QEP).AQEPisacarefullydesignedcourseofactionthataddressesawell-definedandfocusedtopicorissuerelatedtoenhancingstudentlearning.JCCselectedwrittencommunicationasthefocusofitsplan.Thetitleis“OntheWritePath.”Inadditiontothecreationofthetwodocuments,thereaffirmationprocessalsoincludesdialogueandreviewoftheselfstudybypeersinhighereducation.Anon-sitevisitbySACSreviewersisplannedforOctober2012.

JCC adopted a new mission, institutional goals, and strategic areas of emphasis in 2011.

AsIreflectonthemanyaccomplishmentsofthepastyearatJohnstonCommunityCollege,successisthefirstwordthatcomestomind.Throughout2010-11,JCCwitnessedgreatsuccessintheclassroom,intheworkplace,andinourcommunity.

InthisPresident’sReport,youwillseemanyexamplesofhowourinstitutioncreatedsuccessthroughnumerousopportunitiesforindividualsintheJohnstonCountycommunity.Ourexceptionalinstructionalprogramsanddedicatedfacultyandstaffprovidedclear,seamlesspathwaystohelpourstudentsachieveexcellence.In2011,theJCCcampusgrewwiththeconstructionofourmagnificentLearningResourceCenter.Thisyearalsomarkedthebeginningoftheprocesstocontinueouraccreditation.

Iamproudofthededicationandhardworkofourstudents,faculty,andstaffaswecontinuetoservemorethan17,000studentseachyear.Also,IamextremelygratefulfortheleadershipandvisionofourBoardofTrusteesandforthesupportofourmanyfriendsandourCollegeFoundationBoardofDirectors.Theirgenerousgiftsenableustoprovidethebestpossibleeducationalopportunitiesforourstudents.

LastyearwasasuccessfulyearforJCC.Iknow,withallofusworkingtogether,JCCispoisedtoachieveevengreatersuccessinthecomingyears.JCCistrulyaspecialcommunitycollegewithabrightfutureahead.

OnbehalfoftheBoardofTrustees,IwouldliketotakethisopportunitytothankthemanygoodpeopleofJohnstonCommunityCollege.

JCCcontinuestoattractexceptionalstudentsseekingcollegedegreesandtrainingthatwillleadthemtopathwaysofsuccessinthefuture.

JCCtrainsfuturenurses,lawenforcementofficers,welders,andartistsjusttonameafew.OthersstarttheircollegeeducationatJCCandtransfertofour-yearcollegestoearnadvanceddegrees.IamamazedatthenumberofindividualsImeetworkinginpublicandprivatesectorjobsinourcommunitywhograduatedrightherefromJCC.

Asamemberofthisboardfor16years,Ihaveatruepassionfortheworkofcommunitycolleges.Theiropennesstoallindividualsregardlessofsituationorcircumstancemakesthemunique.ThesuccessstoriesofhopeandopportunityIhearfromJCCstudentsaretrulyinspiringandsolidifythevalueofourmission.

JCCisfilledwithfinestudents,finefaculty,andfinestaff.Tothatend,themembersoftheBoardofTrusteesareproudtobeapartofanorganizationthatputsstudentsandservicefirst.

Lastspring,Mitchinerjuggleda30-houracademicscheduleatJohnstonCommunityCollegefilledwithSpanishinterpretingandheatingandairconditioningtechnologyinadditiontohisprerequisitesfornursing.

Ontopoftheacademics,he’salsoastudentambassador,amemberoftheRotaractserviceclub,andthePhiThetaKappahonorsociety.InApril,hewasnamedtheCollege’sAcademicExcellenceAwardrecipient.

“Ijustliketolearn,andI’vealwaysfeltthatknowledgeispower,”saidMitchiner,aGarnerresident.“Peoplecantakeyourmoneyandyourfreedom,buttheycannevertaketheknowledgethat’sinyourhead.”

MitchinersaidheisextremelygratefulforhisstudentambassadorscholarshipandtherelationshipshehasbuiltwithcollegesupportersthroughtheCollegeFoundation.

“Yougettointeractwithdonorswhoplaceanimportantvalueoneducation,

andit’saverygoodfeelingtoknowthatyouareapartofsomethingsospecial,”hesaid.

MitchinercreditshisserviceasayoungadultintheU.S.Navyforinstillinginhimastrongdisciplineforsuccess.Heattributeshisopportunitytostudyadiverseacademicscheduletotheopennessofcommunitycolleges.

“Ithinkthecommunitycollegesystemasawholeisagreatthing,”saidMitchiner,whograduatedinMaywithtwoassociatedegrees.“IhavebeensoimpressedwithJohnstonCommunityCollege.”

A B O U T T H E S T U D E N T A M B A S S A D O R P R O G R A M

Eachyear,JCCselects15up-and-comingstudentleaderstoserveasitsprestigiousstudentambassadors.ThestudentsreceivepaidtuitionfortheyearthroughtheCollegeFoundation.Inreturn,theyareinvolvedinanumberofspecialeventsandactivitiesoncampus.Theprogramalsoteachesthestudentstheimportanceofcommunityservice.In2010-11,theStudentAmbassadorsvolunteeredattheSmithfieldRescueMissionandsponsoredafundraisertoraiseawarenessabouttheorganization.

Soit’snosurprisethatherpassionforhelpingothersachieveisjustoneofthereasonsshewasnamedthe2011recipientoftheEarlC.andDorisF.HelmsExcellenceinTeachingEndowmentatJohnstonCommunityCollege.

“Thestudentscomefromsuchdiversebackgroundsandyoulearnsomuchfromthemeveryday,”Riegersays.

RiegercametoJCCin2006asapart-timeinstructorofbasiceducationandGEDclasses.Ayearlater,shebecametheleadinstructorofthe

newcommunitySpanishinterpreterprogram.Thisfall,RiegertackledanewleadershipopportunityasthedirectorofbasicskillsprogramsatJCC.

“Iamveryhumbledandsurprisedtoreceivethisaward,”Riegeradds.“TherearesomanyotherdeservingcandidateshereattheCollege,andIamproudtobeapartofsuchanamazingfaculty.”

DeeDeeDaughtry,vicepresidentofinstruction,saidRiegerisanexceptionalinstructorwhosetstheexampleofexcellenceinteaching.

“Jessicahasveryhighstandardsofherstudentsandshetrulycaresabouttheirsuccess,”Daughtrysays.“WeareveryproudofJessica’sachievementsandsheismostdeservingofthisoutstandingteachingaward.”

Riegerhasearnedbachelor’sdegreesinSpanishandinternationalbusinessandamaster’sdegreeinadulteducation.Sheiscurrentlypursuingherdoctorateinadulteducationandtraining.ShelivesinSmithfieldwithherhusbandandtheirthreechildren.

WhenitcomestoherjobofkeepingbuildingslookingtheirbestatJohnstonCommunityCollege,immaculateisherstandardpractice.

“Ican’tsayenoughabouthowgoodBarbaraisatherjobandasaJCCemployee,”saidcolleagueCindyPhillips.“Herqualityofcleaningisoutstanding,andshenevercomplains.Barbaraissodeservingofthisoutstandingstaffawardforallshehasdone

aboveandbeyondwhatshe’saskedtodo.”

Bakeristherecipientofthe2011RudolphA.HowellOutstandingStaffPersonAward.Inher23yearsofservicetotheCollege,Bakersaysshe’slovedeverydayonthejob.

“Icouldhavegoneanywheretowork,butIchosetostayhereatJCCbecauseofthefamilyatmosphere,”saysBaker,55.“Weareallfamilyhere,andit’sajoytoworkwithsuchwonderfulpeople.”

TheCollegeisalsospecialtoBakerbecauseit’swheresheearnedhereducation.In1976,shereceivedherhighschooldiplomafromJCCwhentheCollegewaslocatedinFourOaks.ShehasalsoearnedherassociatedegreeingeneraloccupationaltechnologyandphlebotomycertificatefromJCC.

JohnstonCommunityCollegecelebrateditsnewLearningResourceCenterwithanofficialdedicationanddonorrecognitionceremonyonNov.3.

Some200individualsrepresentingtheCollegeandthecommunityattendedtheeventinthenew33,000-square-foot,twostorybuildingonthemaincampus.TheCollege’sfirstenvironmentallyconstructedfacility,theLRCincludesamodernlibraryandstate-of-the-artdistanceeducationlearninglabs.

TheeventcelebratedthefruitionofyearsofplanningandsupportbyCollegeadministration,communityleaders,andprivatedonorsfora21stcenturylearningspaceforstudents.Thefacilitywaspaidforwithcountybondmoniesapprovedbycitizensin2007andopenedforstudentsandpublicuseinAugust.

Theceremonyalsoincludedspecialrecognitionofthedonorswhonamed11spacesinthebuildingthroughanamingprojectbytheCollegeFoundation.ThenamingopportunitiesarebeingusedtocreateendowmentsthatwillsupportanewfundusedtodevelopandexpandinstructionalopportunitiesandmeetemergentinstitutionalneedsatJCC.

JCCwaschosentoreceiveafruitorchardfromTheFruitTreePlantingFoundationandEdy’sFruitBarsafterfinishinginthetop20ofanonlinevotingcompetitionaspartoftheCommunitiesTakeRootproject.

Theorchardincludes30varietiesofappletreesaswellas13educationalspecimensoftreesbearingfruitslikepersimmon,pawpaw,andjujube.Arboretumstaffandvolunteerswillnurtureandcareforthetrees,whichwillenhancetheCollege’ssupportofgrowinganddonatingfreshfoodforPlantaRowfortheHungry.

“Wearetrulyhumbledbythesupportwehavereceivedforthisproject— fromvolunteerstostudents,faculty,staffandadministration—notjustatJCC—butfriendsaroundtheworld,”saidLinFrye,Arboretumdirector.

PlantingDaywasaspecialdayfortheCollegeandthecommunitybutespeciallyforthehardworkingvolunteerswhocaresomuchaboutthefoodproducedattheArboretum.

TalecrisBiotherapeuticsisthe2010recipientoftheJohnstonCommunityCollegeBusinessandIndustryPartneroftheYear.

TheawardwaspresentedFeb.10attheBreakfastbeforeBusinessevent,whichwashostedbytheJohnstonCommunityCollegeFoundation,theJohnstonCountyAssociationofChambersofCommerce,andtheJCCEconomicandWorkforceDevelopmentdepartment.TheeventwassponsoredbyBB&T,FirstCitizensBank,FourOaksBank,andKSBank.

TalecrisBiotherapeuticsreceivedtheawardbasedonthecompany’sphilanthropytoeducationanditssupportof

customizedtrainingprogramsattheCollege.Since2008,TalecrisBiotherapeuticshascontributedorpledgedmorethan$150,000inmonetarysupportforfacilities,businessandindustryprogramming,andstudentscholarshipsatJCC.Thecompanyhasalsodonatednearly$40,000inequipmentandsuppliesfortrainingopportunitiesattheJohnstonCountyWorkforceDevelopmentCenterinClayton.

Federal,state,andcountyleaders,communitycollegerepresentatives,JCCstudents,andfacultyandstaffattendedtheevent,includingrepresentativesforCongresswomanReneeEllmers,U.S.Sen.RichardBurr,andU.S.SenatorKayHagan.N.C.Sen.DavidRouzer,N.C.Rep.LeoDaughtry,andN.C.Rep.JamesLangdonandseveralcountycommissionerswerealsopresent.

Overthepastfouryears,JCChasgrownbysome4,000students—or29percent.Collegeleadersthankedlegislatorsfortheirsupport,butalsostressedtheneedtofullyfund$34millioninenrollmentgrowthmoniesforthestate’s58communitycolleges,ofwhichJCCisthe15thlargest.

OnbehalfoftheJCCFoundationBoardofDirectors,Dr.DavidJohnson,andtheCollegetrustees,Iextendsinceregratitudeforyourgeneroussupport.Inthe2010-2011fiscalyear,theCollegeFoundation’sassetsgrewfrom$4,472,566in2010to$5,133,715asofJune30,2011—anincreaseof13%.Forthesametimeperiod,morethan$540,000wascontributedbyindividuals,corporations,andfoundations.

AllofthesegiftsdirectlysupporttheCollege,itsmission,andtheimportantworkofourfacultyandstaffwhoprovideoutstandingeducationalandworkforcedevelopmentopportunitiestoindividualsinourcountyandregion.

Notablehighlightsofthe2010-2011fiscalyearweretheCollegeFoundation’sannualfallDonorAppreciationandScholarshipRecipientevent,thenearly$60,000raisedduringthe16thannualNealLancaster–FourOaksBankCharityClassic,asuccessfulDollarsforScholarsevent,andtheofficialdedicationanddonorrecognitionoftheFrankCreechArtGallery.

TheCollegeFoundationalsotransformeditsmini-grantsprogramtotheInnovationGrantsProgram,acompetitivegrantsawardprogramforfacultyandstaff.Andspeakingofinnovation,theCollegeFoundationdevelopedanew

President’sInnovationFund,afundestablishedtoassistthetrusteesandCollegepresidentinmeetingemergentandpressingneedsofourinstitutionandstudentbody.Todate,11corporationsandindividualshavenamedspacesinthenewlyconstructedLearningResourceCentertoinitiatesupportforthisfund.
