DEAN’SWELCOMEI am delighted to have this opportunity to invite you to read our Faculty ofEducation viewbook in order to consider the programs that you might wish totake at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). Teaching is afascinating and exciting career.

If you are currently in a teaching position and planning to upgrade yourqualifications, or if you are new to teaching and planning on entering ourConcurrent or Consecutive Education programs, there are many excitingcourses that you can explore in this book and on our website

Whether you teach in the heart of a city such as Toronto or Vancouver orwork with children in rural Canada, typically, as an elementary schoolteacher you can expect to nurture the minds of more than 1,000students throughout your career. If you teach grades 7 to 12, you willhave the opportunity to form significant relationships with more than4,000 students. TEACHER EDUCATIONAT UOITIn just a few short years, we’ve established an outstanding Faculty ofEducation at UOIT. We offer a five-year Concurrent Bachelor of Science(Honours)/Bachelor of Education program in collaboration with ourFaculty of Science that allows you to teach at the intermediate andsenior (I/S) levels (grades 7 to 12). We also offer a one-year ConsecutiveBachelor of Education degree that allows you to teach at the primary andjunior (P/J) levels (junior kindergarten to Grade 6) or I/S. We offerleading-edge preparation programs for teachers in a wide range of areas,including math, science, technology, literacy, geography, physicaleducation and history.

At UOIT, we offer you the chance to think deeply about how people learn invarious subject areas and at different ages. You also have an opportunityto consider how diversity in ability, cultural background and social andreligious experiences of your future students might influence the way youapproach teaching. You learn to be thoughtful and critical about the roleof technology in teaching, and you will develop strong skills in usinglearning technologies. You also learn about the legal and professionalcontext of teaching in Ontario, classroom management, assessmentand much more.

In addition to expertfull-time faculty, we have many highly qualified part-time faculty andfaculty advisors. The faculty advisors will supervise and evaluate you inthe classroom during field experience placements. Your appointed facultyadvisor will make regular contact with associate teachers, principals andschools, intervene during difficult situations and assist you with becominga better teacher.

You use your laptop extensively in preparing assignments, gatheringresearch information, developing teaching lessons, communicating withfaculty and peers, organizing work and making presentations in class.Most courses in the Concurrent and Consecutive programs have anonline component, which ranges from the posting of class content andassignments to engaging in discussions and sharing new learning. Yourlaptop features the latest hardware and a rich assortment ofprogram-related software to ensure you have equal access to technology,resources and services. Inside or outside of the classroom, you canmake quality digital presentations, conduct Internet research, communicatewith professors and other students and have seamless access to allonline resources. CONCURRENTBACHELOR OFEDUCATION PROGRAMGood teachers change lives. At UOIT, you gain the academic backgroundand critical skills needed to help you thrive in the 21st century. Offered inco-operation with UOIT’s Faculty of Science, our Concurrent Bachelor ofScience (Honours)/Bachelor of Education program provides you with theopportunity to earn two degrees in five years, and also prepares you toteach science, math or computer science at the intermediate/senior level(grades 7 to 12). CONCURRENTEDUCATION –OFFERING HANDS-ON,REAL-WORLDEXPERIENCEBecause there is no substitute for experience when learning to be ateacher, you participate in several hands-on field experience placements.These include placements in local elementary and secondary schools atthe end of each of the first three years of the program and three fieldexperiences in your final year. By graduation, you will have more than 100days of school experience. We make every effort to ensure that you notonly get experience teaching your teachable subjects, but in other subjectsand in a variety of grade levels.

WHERE YOUR CONCURRENT BACHELOR OF SCIENCE(HONOURS)/BACHELOR OF EDUCATION DEGREE CANTAKE YOU

As a student in our Concurrent Bachelor of Science (Honours)/Bachelorof Education program, you are specifically prepared to teachmathematics, science or computer science to grades 7 to 12 students.The demand for math, science, and computer teachers in the later gradesis comparatively higher than for teachers in other disciplines. Thedemand for teachers is even higher in other provinces and parts of theUnited States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other countries. As agraduate, you are also well-prepared to pursue higher learning or seekemployment in research, government or corporate training. HoldingBachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education degrees prepares you tosucceed not only in teaching, but in a variety of careers.

CONCURRENTBACHELOR OFSCIENCE/BACHELOROF EDUCATIONPROGRAM ADMISSIONREQUIREMENTSEntrance to the Concurrent Bachelor of Science (Honours)/Bachelor ofEducation program is through admission to UOIT’s Faculty of Science.For admission details, please visit www.science.uoit.ca. Admission tothe program is competitive and based on the number and calibre ofapplications received and the number of spaces available. To be selected,applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

:: An Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), equivalent secondaryschool diploma or mature student status with a minimum average of75 per cent in prerequisite courses;

:: A combined minimum overall average of 75 per cent in six 4U or 4Mcredits, including ENG4U, MHF4U and two of MCV4U, SBI4U, SCH4Uand SPH4U, as well as a combined minimum average of 75 per cent inmath and science courses; andin math and science courses; and

:: A clear criminal reference check and tuberculin test arepost-admission requirements for all applicants.

APPLYING TOTHE CONCURRENTBACHELOR OF SCIENCE(HONOURS)/BACHELOROF EDUCATION PROGRAMApplying to the Concurrent Bachelor of Science (Honours)/Bachelor ofEducation program involves several steps. Please ensure that you allowadequate time to meet all deadlines.

1. Determine your eligibility by reading through the admission requirements.

2. In the fall, one year ahead of your intended start date, apply to theOntario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) at www.ouac.on.ca.The site lays out the detailed process you must follow.

Note: At the end of the fourth year of the Concurrent Bachelor of Scienceprogram, you must have a minimum average of 70 per cent for allthird- and fourth-year courses, plus a minimum average of 70 per cent inthe 10 courses in your first teachable subject and the six courses in yoursecond teachable subject. You must meet these requirements in order tobe admitted to the fifth and final year, when the majority of youreducation courses are taken. If you do not meet these requirements buthave met the Bachelor of Science degree requirements, you can stillgraduate with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree.

PROGRAM YEAR

Obtaining a Bachelor of Science (Honours)/Bachelor of Education degreetakes five years. The first four are comprised of science degree coursesand a few education courses at UOIT’s main campus. The fifth year iscomprised of full-time education courses, with classes generallybeginning in mid-August and ending in May, for a total duration of aboutnine months. Concurrent students complete courses in fifth year withConsecutive Bachelor of Education teacher candidates at the Faculty ofEducation’s downtown Oshawa location.

CONSECUTIVEBACHELOR OFEDUCATION –PRIMARY/JUNIORUOIT offers a one-year Consecutive Bachelor of Education Primary/Junior(P/J) program focused on teaching junior kindergarten to Grade 6, tostudents who hold an appropriate undergraduate degree from arecognized university. Our program’s emphasis is on preparing you to bean elementary school teacher with strengths in science, mathematics,technology and literacy.

The Faculty of Education enables you to develop the communication,critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for success in juniorkindergarten to Grade 6 classrooms. Our professors are experts in theirfields, challenging and inspiring you to push your boundaries of thinkingand learning. They are also skilled in the use of technology in teaching toensure that as a graduate, you are well prepared to be a 21st-centuryeducational leader.

You do not have to be a math or science graduate to apply for the P/Jprogram. We help you learn the skills and knowledge required to be amath and/or science P/J teacher through mandatory math and sciencecamps and your curriculum studies courses.

“I think the most important part of the program for me was the

connection you can make with your professors. I got along well with all of

them, I really enjoyed discussing real-life situations that I know they were

aware of and they have gone though in their own classroom. I also like the

technology aspect. I’m not computer-savvy so coming into the program

and having a focus on mobile technology really enhanced my skills. You

get exposure to it, you’re allowed to use it, they want you to make

mistakes with it. It’s not so much the final product, it’s the process you go

through, which I thought was really important because what you stress as

a teacher is the process of learning. The communication and the

engagement you have with your professors is really positive.”

WHERE YOUR CONSECUTIVE BACHELOR OF EDUCATION –PRIMARY/JUNIOR DEGREE CAN TAKE YOUOur Consecutive Bachelor of Education – P/J program meets all of Ontario’slegislated requirements and incorporates the Standards of Practice andEthical Standards for the Teaching Profession of the Ontario College ofTeachers (OCT). Once you are ready to graduate, we recommend you to theOCT for certification to practice in Ontario. Graduates are qualified to teachin the P/J divisions of Ontario schools.

Many UOIT Bachelor of Education – P/J graduates are hired immediately bylocal school boards and abroad. With a strong math and science focus andexcellent technology skills, our graduates are sought by many schoolboards.

use a couple of really neat pieces of technology, the clicker system, the

classroom performance system and the Smart Boards. I was able to

integrate them into almost all my placements and the students really

loved them, they liked being able to use the new technology and they

engaged and I found it really helped me engage the learners who were

CONSECUTIVEBACHELOR OFEDUCATION –INTERMEDIATE/SENIORPROGRAMGood teachers change lives, and at UOIT you develop the critical skillsneeded to help students thrive in the 21st century. Our intensive one-yearConsecutive Bachelor of Education Intermediate/Senior (I/S) programprepares you to teach grades 7 to 12. The program puts a special emphasison using technology to make teaching and learning more dynamic andeffective. All of our teacher candidates use laptops equipped withspecialized software that is helpful in the field and their studies.

The Faculty of Education enables you to develop the communication,critical-thinking and problem-solving skills essential for success inintermediate and senior classrooms.

CONSECUTIVEBACHELOR OFEDUCATION PROGRAMADMISSIONREQUIREMENTSAdmission to UOIT’s Consecutive Bachelor of Education programs at ourdowntown Oshawa location is competitive and based on the number andcalibre of applications received and the number of spaces available. Tobe selected, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

PRIMARY/JUNIOR

Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree from a recognized universitywith a minimum overall academic average of 70 per cent in their best 10full-year or 20 half-year courses completed. Preference is given to studentswith four-year honours degrees. It is desirable that applicants have a broadacademic background, since Primary/Junior (P/J) teachers deal with a widerange of subject areas. In assessing the academic breadth of P/Japplicants, the UOIT Faculty of Education gives preference to candidateswho have one or more three credit hour undergraduate or graduate coursesin the following subject groupings::: English/linguistics/languages;:: Mathematics/statistics;:: Physical sciences/life sciences;:: Social sciences/humanities; and:: Visual arts/music/drama.

APPLYING TOTHE CONSECUTIVEBACHELOR OFEDUCATIONPROGRAMSApplying to UOIT’s Consecutive Bachelor of Education programs involvesseveral distinct steps. Please ensure you allow adequate time to gatherand prepare your documents in order to meet these deadlines.

1. Determine your eligibility by reading through the admission requirements.If you have questions regarding your eligibility or are planning for thefuture, please contact [email protected].

3. Submit your TEAS supplemental application package to UOIT beforeDecember 1. Forms are available at www.education.uoit.ca. Thesupplemental package includes a personal profile, academic referenceand a professional reference.

Early in the new year, only candidates under consideration for admissionwill be contacted to arrange an interview, and selected applicants will besent offers of admission in early April.

The personal profile is an essential part of the application. Applicantsshould outline their strengths, highlight their teaching and teaching-relatedexperiences and explain why they wish to become a teacher. The academic reference helps UOIT assess the applicant’s academicabilities. It should come directly from a professor at an institution recentlyattended by the candidate. If the applicant is not a recent graduate orhas completed his or her studies internationally, UOIT will accept anadditional professional reference. In this circumstance, a second professionalreference does not place the applicant at a disadvantage.

The professional reference is used to evaluate the applicant’s potentialfor teaching and should come from an employer or supervisor who evaluatedthe applicant in a working or volunteer environment related to teaching.

GRADUATE STUDIESEducation as a concept is rapidly changing in today’s society in itsobjectives, content and modalities. The role of technology in this dynamicprocess has been, so far, both deep and broad. It has transformed theway we think, work, live and socialize. Our social economy is moving fromindustrial models to collective intelligence development. As this changeoccurs, there is a need for specialists in education who understand theglobal and specific role and impact of technology on learning. Societyalso needs these individuals to be in a position to offer the kind ofinformed leadership necessary to prepare future generations for anever-evolving reality. Thus, at UOIT, the graduate program in Education isintended specifically to prepare future leaders and specialists in learningand technology to meet the needs of their constituents in this social context.

MASTER OFEDUCATIONIn the Master of Education program, students take a selection of requiredcore and elective courses to complete a total of 30 credits of work. Sixtyper cent of courses are online, while the remaining are delivered in ahybrid combination of online and face-to-face.

The field of education and digital technologies within the MEd programbuilds on the UOIT institutional strengths in information and communicationtechnologies. Students interested in a more general MEd can take coursesin a variety of key areas.

The MEd program is available with either a portfolio or project option.Students with portfolio options are required to take 10 three-creditcourses, one of which is a three-credit digital portfolio. Project optionstudents take eight courses together with a six-credit research project.

FROM GRADUATE DIPLOMA TO GRADUATE DEGREE

Graduate Diploma in Education and Digital Technologies graduatesinterested in furthering their education can have up to six of their 12credits counted toward pursuing UOIT’s Master of Education.

Students already in the graduate diploma program and interested inswitching to the master's program can apply for admission. Should theybe accepted, they may transfer all of their credits to the Master's degree.In this case, they would not receive the graduate diploma.

Students who have completed a Master's degree and wish to enrol in thegraduate diploma program may transfer up to six credits toward thediploma, depending on the courses they have taken in their master's program.

WHERE YOUR GRADUATE-LEVEL EDUCATION CAN TAKE YOU

This research-based program is intended for future leaders andspecialists in education and digital technology so they can meet theneeds of their constituents in this social context For example, elementaryor secondary teachers and principals wanting to offer leadership inprojects involving digital technologies in their schools and school boards,college-level instructors, individuals from professional fields such asnursing or from other areas involved in professional training andeducation, or anyone with a personal or professional interest in teachingand learning in a digital context can develop highly sought after expertisein this field. Finally, for some individuals, this can ultimately lead them toconsider doctoral studies and a research position in this new and rapidlydeveloping field.

GRADUATE STUDIESPROGRAM ADMISSIONREQUIREMENTSIn addition to the general admission requirements for graduate studentsat UOIT, students applying to the Master of Education and GraduateDiploma in Education and Digital Technologies programs must meet thefollowing minimum program-specific requirements:

:: Hold a four-year honours degree from a Canadian university or athree-year university degree and a Bachelor of Education degree or itsequivalent from a recognized institution;

:: Overall academic standing of at least a B (GPA 3.0 on a 4.0/4.3scale), with a minimum B in the last two full-time years (four systems)of undergraduate work or equivalent.

:: Submission of one certified copy of each previous undergraduate andgraduate transcript directly from the granting institution is required.It is the student's responsibility to provide a certified Englishtranslation of the transcript if the original is in another language.Applicants may be required to submit a brief description of the courseslisted on their official transcripts or provide a copy of the relevantcalendar where they are listed.

:: A minimum of two letters of reference from persons having directknowledge of the applicant's academic competence. Academicreferences are preferred however, professional references will beaccepted. Letters of reference should come from individuals underwhom the applicant has worked closely or studied.

:: Proof of English proficiency is needed from those applicants whosefirst language is not English. Please note that applicants to the MEdand Graduate Diploma in Education and Digital Technologies programsmust achieve a minimum score of 580 (paper-based), 237(computer-based) or 92-93 (Internet-based) if they use TOEFL testscores as a measure of their language proficiency.

:: As part of the application form, students are expected to provide aone-page Statement of Interest outlining their objectives in undertakinggraduate study. Applicants may describe career aspirations/plans,specific research interests (if known), and experience relevant to theirinterests. If a potential thesis supervisor has been contacted, he/shemust be identified in the Statement of Interest.
