Jennifer Hackworthy ’81 Gambino

Jennifer Hackworthy came to Edgewood when she was four years old for the Campus School pre-kindergarten program. Fourteen years later she graduated from Edgewood High School. She wenton to Lawrence University and later married her classmate Frank Gambino ’81. Their daughterMadeline was a member of the Campus School Class of 2011.

Frank described the feelings that he and Jennifer had about Edgewood Campus School like this, “We firmly believe that the foundation for higher learning begins with Edgewood Campus School.”Jennifer Hackworthy ’81 Gambino died in the fall of 2007 of cancer. She was loved and is missedby many. •On Friday, September 24, 2011 the families of Jennifer Hackworthy Gambino and Frank Gambino, as well as their Edgewood Campus School classmates of 1981, came together for the dedication andblessing of a memorial in Jennifer’s memory. The stone bench and garden have been placed in abeautiful setting in the back yard of the Campus School.

The inscription on the stone reads: In memory of Jennifer Hackworthy Gambino (’81),

whose compassion and grace showed us that acceptance is the

cornerstone of friendship.

Board Chairperson’s Letter

6 27

As I reflect back over the past year, I am reminded of our core value of partnershipat Edgewood Campus School. In 2011 we took important steps to secure our positionas an independently incorporated institution on the Edgewood campus. The workto establish the necessary documentation for this incorporation has been goingon for many years. We were able to achieve this important step, and maintain anappropriate setting for the education of elementary and middle school students, through our strong partnership with the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa. We willalways be indebted to Greg Everts, attorney and former ECS parent and Boardmember, for the countless hours of time and expertise he so graciously donated onbehalf of Edgewood Campus School. We are also grateful to Toni Prestigiacomo, attorney and current ECS parent and Board member, for her time and talents infinalizing this process.

As the Chair of the Board, I speak for all of the trustees when I express our supportfor Sister Kathleen and the dedicated faculty and staff of Edgewood Campus School. Our partnership is one of mutual respect, and shared vision and hope for the future. With the incorporation behind us, we will move forward to plan for the future as aschool with a clear mission, strong core values, and high academic standards.

As a former parent of Edgewood Campus School, with a high school senior who ismaking college decisions, I have been reminiscing about our Campus School days. Our senior entered high school with a strong foundation in academics and aconfidence that was fostered by the core values of Edgewood Campus School. Thepartnership between parents and the school is a positive message to the students, andprovides so many opportunities for growth. Thank you to all the parents who attendacademic events like the Geo Fair, coach our teams, attend the concerts, serve lunch, help in the classrooms and partner in so many other ways.

Dear Friends and Families of Edgewood Campus School,

During the 2010–2011 school year Edgewood Campus School and the other two schools of Edgewoodreached a milestone that has long been in progress, taking hundreds of hours of collaborative meetingsover the past five years. All three schools are now separately incorporated and as of September 19, 2011,our legal name is Edgewood Campus School, Inc. For many years, the three schools have had separateadministrations, Boards of Trustees and finances, but this separation has resulted in the compilationof policies and procedures that will protect the three schools into the future. As part of this process, all the land and buildings on the Edgewood campus have been designated as being owned by oneof the three schools, or owned “in common.” Written agreements are in place indicating where theland is divided, who owns what percentage of which building and how expenses are allocated.A Condominium Association was formed to govern the commonly owned areas relative to maintenanceand capital improvements. Two representatives from each school serve on this board and decisionsmust be unanimous.

Accomplishment of this goal could not have been possible without the help of our attorneys, GregEverts and Toni Prestigiacomo. Between them, several hundred hours of pro-bono legal work wasdonated. Both of these attorneys will receive recognition near our donor tree outside the office in theCampus School building. We will forever be in their debt.

Our Board of Trustees and, of course, key staff members of the Campus School were instrumentalin this process. In addition, the Sinsinawa Dominican Corporate Members who were in office duringthis process also deserve our gratitude. They sat through many meetings gathering information andmaking critical decisions about land division and expenses.

I am continually amazed by the generosity of all the members of the Edgewood Campus Schoolcommunity. Our Home and School each year discovers more ways to help us raise funds and promotecommunity. Parents assist us in the classroom, on the playground, at hot lunch and during everyactivity. Our donors, parents and friends gift us financially and are always partnering with us toachieve our goals.

Another way that our families and friends assist us is by being our goodwill ambassadors to prospectivefamilies. Many of our newly enrolled students are past or present family referrals. We thank you for thisand for the many other ways you help to make Edgewood Campus School a great place for education. We look forward to a future filled with bright, engaged students, supportive families and excellenteducational experiences.

Sincerely,

Sister Kathleen Malone, President/Principal

The Quality of Their Work is Crystal ClearEdgewood Campus School alumni Manpreet Kaur ’10 and Marie Avey ’10 wererecognized for their work as student-scientists last year in Project CRYSTAL(Crystallographers Researching with Young Scientists: Teaching and Learning) while

they were in 8th grade. They were featured in theAugust 2, 2010 issue of Chemical & Engineering Newsand again in the October 5, 2010 issue of Biochemistry.

Biochemistry professor Hazel Holden andEdgewood Campus School middle school scienceteacher Daniel Toomey were awarded a grantfrom the National Science Foundation (NSF)in April 2009 to bring six students fromEdgewood Campus School to research X-raycrystallography alongside graduate studentsin Holden’s lab.

The Campus School students got to assist inthe process of science, and in spring 2010 the two

girls set up crystal trays that provided key data for a graduatestudent’s project leading to a published paper in Biochemistry.

The editors of this biophysical chemistry and molecular biology journal learned ofthe story and put the middle school students’ work on the cover of the magazine. It is especially exciting becausethe graduate students had beentrying to get this data for sometime, and growing good crystals isvery tricky. Avey and Kaur are theyoungest authors of a publishedpaper for this journal.

To see their crystals, visithttp://pubs.acs.org/action/.

Edgewood Campus School student-scientists ManpreetKaur ’10 and Marie Avey ’10 were recognized inprofessional science journals for their work in ProjectCRYSTAL (Crystallographers Researching with YoungScientists: Teaching and Learning).

Home & School OrganizationThe Home & School Organization is theparent group that serves two functions atEdgewood Campus School.

The first is to build a sense of community atthe school. It is very important that familieswho are new, as well as those who havebeen at ECS for some time, feel a part ofour community. A mentor family welcomeseach new family to guide them through thefirst year at the Campus School. Home &School hosts a New Parent Orientationmeeting before the first day of school anda fall School Picnic helps kick off the newschool year.

Fund raising is the second mission of theHome & School Organization. Each yearthe parent group is committed to raise atleast $30,000 toward the operational budgetof the school. The annual fund-raisingcalendar includes drives and events like:school supply sale, Innisbrook gift-wrap sale, cinnamon bread sales, SCRIP and the annualAuction.

Edgewood Campus School is blessed withan amazing group of parent volunteers whocontribute time and talent on committees, inthe classrooms, lunchroom and playground.Without the help of volunteers it would bedifficult if not impossible for EdgewoodCampus School to thrive and prosper. We arevery grateful.

• Thirteen cameras monitor and record the entrances and common areas of the school.

• A computer monitor in the office provides views of these areas throughout the day.

• All visitors must check in at the Receptionist’s desk and receive badges thatidentify them as authorized to be in the school building.

There are blue emergency phones in various outdoor locations on the Edgewoodcampus. College security officers, the Campus Activity Center personnel andEdgewood High School staff monitor activity on 62 cameras strategically placedon our campus.

A written safety plan is in place at Edgewood Campus School. Regular drills areconducted to practice in the event of fire, lock-down or other emergency. Parentsare contacted via a voicemail notification message on their home and cell phonesin the event of school closing or delay.
