“We took guests through every emotion. I talked about how Steve thinks he was a rapper and break-dancer in a previous life, and he shared about my devotion and love of animal print,” said Ortiz.

To underscore the theme of non-traditional, Ortiz insisted on having a Central Coast cuisine- Santa Maria BBQ style. The family style menu consisted of tri-tip, chicken, macaroni-and-cheese, salad and beans.

“I know our wedding was at an elegant high-

end resort, but because of the location I had to have a meats and potatoes kind of dinner,” said Ortiz.

Their baby-blue wedding cake towered three tiers, accented with seashells, and came in flavors of chocolate, fruit, and carrot.

Ortiz, an avid scrapbooker, created her own departing favors. The departing favors were keepsake-sized photo books that featured every guest.

“Guests were so excited to see their picture at the wedding- everyone was turning pages looking to find their photo in the book- it was a great conversation starter,” said Ortiz. “Guests tell me they now have the wedding book on their home coffee table for their guests to see.”

The wedding event did not skip a detail, however the focal point of the day was with no doubt the bride in her wedding gown. Ortiz’s bridal gown was a strapless off-white crushed organza dress with a flowy a-line cut- ideal for a by the sea wedding. To Ortiz’s surprise, she did not have a difficult time finding her dress, but was surprised where she found it. Initially Ortiz visited a few high-end boutiques in the area and had liked some dresses, but still had not found her ideal wedding dress. It wasn’t until she went dress shopping with her mom that she found her dream dress.

“My mom would drive by a bridal dress store everyday on her way to work and look at the dresses in the window and even before I became engaged she would tell me- when you get married you are going to find

your dress at that store,” said Ortiz. “I would tell her ok mom- thinking to myself sure mom I’ll never find my dress there- I was surprised when I did.”

Although Ortiz found her wedding gown in a garment bag in a more humble store compared to the boutiques she initially visited- it was uniquely expressive of her and their wedding. Ortiz advises brides

and couples to be true to themselves and to choose their own wedding style no matter how ‘untraditional’ it may seem to others.

“Steve and I owned every aspect of our wedding- it was reflective of us,” said Ortiz. “Working on our wedding together brought us closer and assured me we are a great team.” RBW

Catering does more than tickle the taste buds. It offers a stunning visual presentation to your reception while the appetizing aroma invites guests to enjoy the atmosphere and company. The food and drinks you decide to serve will be determined by your budget, the time of day you will be eating, and of course your personal taste.

Consulting Cuisine Before setting out on your search for a caterer you will want to choose which type of food service you desire: buffet or sit-down, full service or

partial service. When you speak with a caterer, be prepared to provide them with the reception location, your budget, the time and date of your wedding, and any food preferences or allergies. While almost anyone can make a meal sound appetizing, you don’t want to find out on the big day you don’t like the pear and chicken combination after all. Consequently, be sure to ask for a taste test of everything that will be served. So there are no unwanted surprises, ask about the quality of extras, such as whether the plates

Catering has evolved from just the basic preparation of food to an elaborate production for events—especially weddings. With an average 45% of the wedding budget spent on the entire reception, it is important to determine what you expect from your caterer and to ask a variety of questions. Questions to Ask Your Caterer When interviewing different caterers for your big day, make sure to ask a variety of questions to get a good idea of what the business is like. Here are some examples:

Are they a licensed caterer?

Are they insured?

How long have they been in business?

Do they have recommendations from satisfied customers?

Are they a basic caterer or all-inclusive caterer—determine if china, flatware and stemware are included in the quote.

What ingredients do they use in the food preparation?

Advertorial

Last Minute Note Make sure to compare the quotes of all caterers you interviewed. One may seem to be the cheapest, but might include essentials such as the table settings.

For an easy, stress-free approach to planning the reception, consider going with an All -Inclusive Caterer, everything you need under one roof!

are paper or china, or if the chairs are plastic or wooden. Be sure to look out for any hidden fees, such as water or cake serving charges. Discussing Drinks Toasting to your new life together with a glass of your favorite champagne may be the first of your wedding day drinks, but it won’t be the only beverage enjoyed that day. Set aside time to determine and book the bar service for the reception. Most bar services give you the option of an open or no-host bar. Some couples choose to have a variety of mixed drinks as well as beer and wine available to guests. Others choose to only cover certain drinks and offer guests the choice to pay for additional drinks. Whenever interviewing a bar service, make sure the company

is licensed to serve alcohol, provides supplies such as tables and glasses, and lastly check their references.

Food and Friends When serving food and drinks, quality should never be comprised. Be sure to shop around to find the perfect caterer for your budget. Don’t make catering another chore on your check list; food should be fun and enjoyed! Set aside a day for you and your fiancé to taste-test the menu options of various caterers. Enjoy each other’s company over these mini-meals and treat your creativity to the endless possibilities. RBW

One can often tell a bride’s favorite flower by her bouquet, the couple’s cuisine of choice by the meal, their style by the theme, but the music tells more than just their favorite song; it conveys the feelings and emotions the couple often cannot put into words. Your choice of music from the moment the attendants walk into the ceremony to the last dance of the reception sets the tone throughout the special day. When planning the music for the reception, deciding between a DJ and a live band is the biggest decision. The majority of weddings today have a DJ, due to the diverse playlist a live band may not be able to offer. However, for an era-themed wedding or if you enjoy a particular genre of music, a live band may be a fitting selection. Have your heart set on the romance of a live band but want to get down to your favorite

hip hop song? Have the best of both worlds - book a live band and a dj! Whichever you decide, asking questions and giving specific instructions are important to finding quality entertainment. When interviewing a DJ or band, find out the details about their sound equipment, references, insurance, and licenses. Though it is more common for DJ’s than bands, you want to find an entertainer who will double as the master of ceremonies. This person is in charge of moving the reception from one event to the next. The “MC” will usually announce your entrance into the reception, the title of special dances such as the father-daughter dance, and alert the guests when the meal is served or the cake will be cut. Be specific about your music

A photograph captures the very soul of a moment never to be experienced the same way again; a video captures the sights, sounds, and emotion of these photographic moments. Use this information to make the most of both!

Picture Perfect These tangible memories taken on your wedding day will become one of your most cherished possessions; selecting who you entrust this responsibility with should be carefully thought out. When you visit with the photographer, present your budget, photographs you like, and the following questions:

• Who will be shooting the day of my wedding?

• How much experience do you have with weddings?

• Are you familiar with the venue? • How do you feel about the location?

• Will you be working on more than one wedding that day? • How would you describe your work?

• Do you have references?

• Can I see a portfolio or examples of your wedding photography?

When determining which photographer to choose, make sure to take into account their personality and how well you get along with them. They will be with you throughout the events of the day and it is key to feel comfortable. Once you have made your choice, an engagement photo shoot is the perfect opportunity for a test-run. These informal pictures will be great to use for

engagement announcements or save-the-date cards. They will also reassure you of the photographer’s style and ability. Then, before your wedding day, visit the ceremony and reception sites with your photographer to discuss thoughts and ideas for the special day. Provide them with a detailed list of specific pictures you would like to take. You may think it’s obvious to have a picture with your old college roommates, but the photographer will have no way of knowing this without communication. Share the locations you had in mind to take pictures and get their feedback on the timeline you want. Make sure to plan extra time in case of mishaps or delays.

Memories in Motion Videography has grown increasingly more popular over the years and has introduced a new way to capture the wedding festivities. This media form may be more expensive than a simple photography package, as rates usually run anywhere between $500 to $5,000. This amount can fluctuate based on the number of crew members, special effects, hours spent shooting and editing, and the number of DVD’s produced. Choosing a video package is a wise investment to enjoy aspects of the day you missed out on when taking pictures or getting ready. Video also gives friends and relatives who could not make it to the wedding a chance to share in the experience. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, and a video may be worth a thousand pictures, so look into your options, keep your budget in mind, and never compromise the quality of memories. With over fifteen years of producing wedding shows, Pam Bower, owner of Bridal Event Productions, prides her success on continually exceeding the expectations of local bride and grooms. Bridal Event Productions is a locally-owned and locally-based wedding show company.

“I once had a mother of a bride burst into tears as she walked through the harpist and violinists serenading guests into a show,” said Bower. “She just couldn’t contain her emotions and she

had more than goosebumps, and I thought to myself I did it- my goal is for all guests to have a positive and memorable experience.”

Wedding shows are not new to this part of the Central Valley, Bower, having started in the wedding industry many

years ago as a flower shop owner, has witnessed the many transformations of local wedding shows.

Bill Bestolarides, owner of Formal Connections is marveled with what Bower has done with Bridal Event Productions.

Bestolarides and Bower initially co-created Bridal Event Productions, nearly sixteen years ago, as a result of exclusion from other bridal shows in the area at that time.

“I was in the business of formal wear, and Pam at the time was in business of flowers, and year after year we just could not get a platform to connect with local couples, so we thought lets start our own wedding show,” said Bestolarides.

“Until this day I work closely with Pam, not only because of our history, but because she is one of the most honest people I’ve ever worked with, and she is great at what she does,” said Bestolarides.

Bestolarides believes the success of Bridal Event Productions can be credited to Bower’s personal understanding of the many challenges local wedding professionals encounter.

“Many wedding professionals have been negatively impacted by the economy, and Pam takes the time to work with wedding professionals through these difficult times,” said Bestolarides. “She never wants any business to feel excluded from the local wedding business community or feel as their work is not good enough- she’s absolutely a great businesswoman.”

Bower strongly believes in supporting local businesses, and encourages couples to expose themselves to an array of different professionals, but is constantly reminding them, if they are marrying locally, they should contract locally. RBW

Fresh flower blossoms bring ambiance, beauty and class to every setting, making them the perfect embellishment at weddings. From clusters of vibrant Red Orchids to trails of soft, delicate lilies, floral arrangement possibilities vary in every shape and size, giving brides the freedom to select a design that compliments their own personal vision. However, with a grand and complex floral selection, achieving the look you desire is often best left up to a professional florist. When choosing a florist, be sure each professional understands and accommodates your budget, design and style. A qualified florist is less likely to forget the smaller details, such as fresh flowers on the cake, and is usually more reliable and relaxed in stressful situations. In order to have the most productive meeting with your florist, it is important to come prepared with information that will determine their ability to serve you.

Leticia Casillas, owner of Hand Creations Floral, shares some tips for brides to get the best experience when meeting with a florist and/or event designer about their wedding.

On your first visit with your florist, remember to bring information about:

• The date, time and location of both the wedding ceremony and reception. Make sure to mention whether your event will be indoors or outdoors. • Fabric swatches and descriptions of both yours and your bridal party’s dresses.• Pictures of colors and design elements you have chosen. (You can bring examples from brides magazines)• The number of people in your wedding party.(for flower bouquets, hairpieces, boutonnières, etc).• The size of the venue(s) you are using.• Your budget.

Of all of the floral arrangements at the wedding, the bride’s bouquet is the most important. A bouquet is an essential fashion accessory for the bride, tying together the floral theme of the wedding and the style of the bride. Whatever style you choose, small and round or long and cascading, make sure it is proportional to your gown and not too heavy to hold for a long period of time.

Linens, centerpieces and more...Make sure to shop around for linens and other centerpieces that interest you. Today’s modern linens come with unique patterns that allow you to accent with solid colors, such as with napkins. *Photo on left taken of table setting by Hand Creations Floral - www.handcreationsflora.net ¢

preference. Provide a list of “must-have” songs, such as your first dance, but also a list of songs you do not want played. This will give the DJ or band a feel for your likes and dislikes. Most of all make sure you are comfortable

with the personality and style of the entertainer who will be leading much of the reception. ¢

the groom’s guide

Taking part in the wedding planning process will be a true test of how well you work together as a team! Get ready to experience your own Amazing Race. You will spend months preparing with your fiancé, making every last detail perfect. Sometimes as the groom, you may feel like your role in organizing and participating in the wedding celebration is of less importance than the bride, however, this is not true!

While the preparations may not be as extensive for the groom as for the bride, each have roles of equal importance. In order to achieve a seamless wedding ceremony and reception, it’s important for the groom to be actively involved in the planning process. Preparing for the big day can be a stressful task for men who are unsure of what their responsibilities entail. Keep reading as we clarify these duties to help you reduce confusion and get you started on the right track.

PREPARING FOR THE BIG DAY The Wedding Party

Getting married is a significant step in a man’s life. Determining which men you will trust to share your wedding journey with can be a difficult decision. For the best man, you will want to choose one of your closest friends or family members who will understand and accept these important duties. After selecting your best man, next determine how many groomsmen you would

like. While who you pick is your personal decision, it’s important to communicate with your fiancé in order to coordinate with her and her bridesmaids.

Gifts and Financial Responsibilities

You bought the engagement ring of her dreams, now it’s time to find the wedding band that will symbolize your commitment to each other. You may have been on your own when searching for the engagement ring, but the wedding band is a decision you can make together. Put aside an afternoon to spend browsing for the rings that will suit you both. (Make sure to check out our diamond guide for helpful tips and information!)

Once the rings have been bought, there is one more special gift to give your bride-to-be. On the day of the wedding, it is customary for the bride and groom to exchange gifts. It does not have to be expensive but should have sentimental value to both of you. Some suggestions include: a photo album of your lives together thus far, a family heirloom, a keepsake of a special memory, or jewelry; all should be accompanied with a handwritten letter, card, or poem.

In addition, you will need to buy your groomsmen and best man gifts. Give them something they can use and will enjoy. When trying to decide on gifts, consider what you would like to receive. Some popular gifts include:

• Fine cigars • Tickets to a favorite sporting event • Gift cards to a hardware store, restaurant, or even a spa • A bottle of wine or whiskey

GETTING “GROOM”ED You will want to look your best for your wedding because you, too, will be in the spotlight alongside your beautiful bride. Achieving your best look may require a little more effort than you are accustomed to, but will be well worth it. Health and Hygiene tips for your big day: • Get a quality hair cut without any drastic style changes. • Take care of unruly facial hair such as brows, nose, and ear hair. • Invest in a men’s facial cleanser to clear up clogged pores and blemishes. • Use teeth whitening for a nice smile. • Consider getting a manicure/pedicure. • Consider a facial or massage to relax. • Be clean shaven the day of the wedding.

Responsibilities of the Best Man

• Provide emotional support for the groom. • Plan the bachelor party. • Prepare a speech for the reception. • Hold on the wedding bands. • Make sure all the groomsmen are dressed in the appropriate attire. • Help the maid of honor prepare the honeymoon suite. • Coordinate the return of rented apparel.
