Johnson Arena

Ellis T. Johnson Arena in the Aca-demic-Athletic Center has served as

the homecourt for Morehead State men’s basketball since 1981. The AAC is one of the best facilities in the nation for men’s basketball, and Johnson Arena is named for former Morehead State athletic director and coach Ellis T. Johnson. John-son was also a highly successful football coach at both University of Kentucky and Marshall University. The Eagles enjoy a tremendous home court advantage in Johnson Arena.

During the summer of 2006, the arena floor was completely resurfaced with Morehead State’s new primary logo and word marks. The Eagles’ locker room, located just steps from the court, was also completetly refurbished with new walls, lockers and furniture. The locker facility is also conveniently connected to the AAC training room.

The building is a multi-purpose facility and also houses offices for a majority of the athletic department staff, including a second-floor office suite for men’s basketball. The facility also houses a cheerleading room, the Len Miller VIP Room, a full-service weight room, a satellite training room,

sauna and steam rooms, and ample con-cession and storage areas. The AAC also incorporates the Russell McClure Pool, which served as home to the MSU swim team until 1995.

The University broke ground on the AAC in 1978 and completed the project in 1981. The Eagles won their inaugural game in the building on December 3, 1981 over the University of Charleston.

Johnson Arena itself has a seating capacity of 6,500 for basketball and can be easily tranformed into an auditorium for concerts and commencements. At the East end of the playing floor, a hydraulic

stage can be raised for events. Since opening, the arena has hosted such national acts as Alabama, David Letterman, M.C. Hammer, the Goo Goo Dolls, Alan Jackson, Dashboard Confessional, Jeff Foxworthy, Tim McGraw, Travis Tritt and Sawyer Brown.

Eagles in the Community

Coming off its winningest season in more than 30 years, the Morehead State women’s

basketball program is poised to remain at the top of the Ohio Valley Conference and challenge for national exposure under new head coach Tom Hodges and his staff.

Hodges, hired in the summer, is the youngest head women’s basketball coach in Division I at 27 years old, but he already has loads of experi-ence under three of the most successful coaches in women’s basketball. He learned under legendary Tennessee Tech coach Bill Worrell as a student coach, helped with uber-successful coach Wes Moore at Chattanooga, and helped lead a Middle Tennessee State team under head man Rick Insell to a perennial top-25 status.

Hodges will have four key players back in the mix for his first season but will also have to rely on a plethora of newcomers to fill out the Eagles’ rotation.

It starts with 2009-10 Ohio Valley Confer-ence Player of the Year Chynna Bozeman. The do-it-all athlete from Reynoldsburg, Ohio led the league and ranked 15th in the nation in scoring last season with 19.6 scores per game. She also broke the MSU and OVC single season record for three-pointers made with 121. She was the main cog in an offense that also broke the NCAA Division I record for three-pointers made and attempted, and Hodges expects more of the same this season.

While the Eagles ranked number one in the nation in three-pointers, it was the team that Hodges helped coach at MTSU that ranked sec-ond in the country, so you can expect the three-point parade to continue this year at MSU.

Also back to run the offense is junior point guard Courtney Lumpkin. She had a breakout season a year ago, leading the team with 147 assists and scoring 10.6 points per game. Lump-kin is capable of hitting the outside shot, but she is also a dangerous athlete when she drives to the basket.

In the frontcourt, sophomore Ashar Harris is back to anchor the low blocks. As a true fresh-man, she led the OVC in rebounding, grabbing 300 boards, including 126 offensive caroms. She also chipped in 6.3 points per game and has been working hard on her offensive skills in the offsea-son. Harris once grabbed 22 rebounds in just her fourth collegiate game last season.

The final returning player is reserve guard Linda Dixon. While she hasn’t seen a lot of playing time, Dixon has proven to be a tough defender when she is in the floor. She is in her third season so she’ll be looked upon for more of a leadership role under Hodges.

Two players who sat out the 2009-10 cam-paign after transferring from Division I schools, Channing Hillman and Jayne Cox, will give MSU depth and athleticism in the frontcourt. Hillman, a transfer from UTEP, has shown tremendous athletic ability and also range in her jumper in the preseason. As an upperclassman, she also has taken on a leadership role. Cox, meanwhile, at 6-foot-2 gives the Eagles another great rebound-ing option. She came in to the program last year following a year at Northeastern University.

Hodges will have five true newcomers in the program this season, including one junior college transfer.

Phylicia Freeman, a guard with some height,

spent two seasons at Pratt Community College. Among the four freshmen, probably the best pure shooter is guard Allie Turner. She earned numer-ous honors at Greenon (Ohio) High School and averaged 29.0 points per game as a senior. Terrice Robinson will give MSU another option at point guard, while Tyler Ituen and Shanice Parker are both quick guard-types with long range ability as well.

The Eagle schedule features a wide variety of competition levels for MSU. The Eagles open the year with a pair of NCAA tournament teams in Kentucky and Notre Dame and then host their own Comfort Inn and Suites Classic. A tourna-ment at Florida International in Miami highlights the beginning of the Holiday season, and four pre-Christmas OVC games will pose unique challenges this year. The Eagles will also play non-conference foes Marshall, Longwood, SIU Edwardsville (twice) in addition to the 16 other OVC games after the Holiday.

Sophomore Ashar Harris grabbed 300

rebounds last year, helping MSU lead the

conference in rebounding.
